While You Were Gawking at the Gulf Gusher: UN’s REDD Forest Preservation Deal Gets Major Funding

Though they may look like forests at first glance, palm oil plantations often have far lower biodiversity and store far less carbon than the genuine forests they replace. Photo: Achmad Rabin Taim via flickr. One more story making the rounds last week that you may have missed in the midst of all the continued oil gushing in the Gulf of Mexico, but is worthwhile paying attention to: The top line is that the UN REDD program got $4 billion in funding, with $1 billion coming from Norway and going to Indonesia to h… Read the full story on TreeHugger

‘Shrek’ Rakes In More Green Than ‘Prince Of Persia’ And ‘Sex And The City 2’

Both new releases fall short in the face of repeat performer ‘Shrek.’ By Josh Wigler Shrek and Puss in Boots in “Shrek Forever After” Photo: DreamWorks Animation LLC The Box-Office Top Five #1 “Shrek Forever After” ($55.7 million) #2 “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time” ($37.8 million) #3 “Sex and the City 2” ($37.1 million) #4 “Iron Man 2” ($20.6 million) #5 “Robin Hood” ($13.6 million) The sand-blown men and women of “Sex and the City 2” and “Prince of Persia” were offered a rude awakening at the box office this weekend, as the mean green ogre known as “Shrek Forever After” barreled its way to a first-place finish for the second week in a row. “Shrek Forever After” won first place with little trouble during the Memorial Day holiday weekend, taking home a gold medal worth $55.7 million. The film suffered a minor 21.3 percent drop from its $70.8 million performance last weekend, calming some fears that the “Shrek” franchise had lost its green sheen as a box-office powerhouse. After two weekends in theaters, the “Shrek” sequel has earned $145.5 million domestically and $25.7 million overseas for a budget-surpassing $171.3 global haul. The success of “Shrek” came at the expense of the weekend’s two new major releases: Warner Bros. and New Line’s “Sex and the City 2” and Walt Disney’s “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.” Both projects entered the weekend with their fair share of selling points — “Prince of Persia” boasts Jake Gyllenhaal’s star power as well as a built-in audience from its video game source material, while “Sex and the City” has a well-established fanbase. But neither film could hold a candle against “Shrek,” settling for second- and third-place finishes worth $37.8 million and $37.1 million, respectively. There are silver linings for both films, however. In the case of “Persia,” the movie enjoyed an impressive $95.5 million showing at the foreign box office. For “Sex,” the Sarah Jessica Parker-starring sequel earned $51.4 million from its Thursday release through the Monday holiday, falling short of its 2008 predecessor’s opening weekend by only $5 million. Upcoming Releases Jonah Hill and Russell Brand will do their best to “Get Him to the Greek” next weekend, as Adrien Brody and Sarah Polley tempt fate with sci-fi experimentation in “Splice.” If you’re looking for light-hearted laughs, look no further than Owen Wilson’s “Marmaduke” and Ashton Kutcher’s “Killers.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Shrek Forever After” , “Sex and the City 2” and “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . 3OH!3 And Ke$ha’s ‘First Kiss’: The Summer Jam Of 2010?

If it’s not the song of the summer, it’s still a bona fide party starter. By Kyle Anderson 3OH!3 and Ke$ha’s ‘First Kiss’ Photo: Photo Finish Records In one corner, we have Denver post-electro duo 3OH!3, whose chant-along choruses have made them favorites of hard-partyers everywhere. In the opposite corner stands Ke$ha, a star whose debut album Animal continues to wreck the Billboard charts on the back of killer singles like “Tik Tok” and the recently released “Your Love Is My Drug.” With so much melody and dance-friendly music packed into one song, their collaboration would have to be the winner of the 2010 Summer Songs Sweepstakes , right? It’s quite possible. The three already collaborated on a hit (“Blah Blah Blah,” which appeared on Ke$ha’s album), and their latest hookup is another chant-along jam called “First Kiss,” which celebrates the thrill of the titular rite of passage on the strength of a pulse-pounding beat and a chorus you can shout along to (not unlike Avril Lavigne’s “Girlfriend,” a summer-jam contender in 2007 ). Of course, the summer-friendly lyrical content doesn’t hurt. “That’s a really summery topic,” said Leah Greenblatt of Entertainment Weekly. “Everybody has a memory of having a first kiss under a boardwalk or something.” For Ke$ha, it’s all about having a good time — another very summer-centric sentiment. “It’s just fun,” she told MTV News. “The song is fun, and those guys [in 3OH!3] are fun.” With all that positive energy already folded into the song, “First Kiss” should be an automatic winner for the title of Official Summer Jam of 2010, right? It’s a strong entry, but it also faces stiff competition from similarly excellent tunes by Lady Gaga , B.o.B , Usher and Katy Perry . Still, even if “First Kiss” doesn’t emerge as the song that sticks with us through the season’s beach parties and barbecues, 3OH!3 and Ke$ha can be confident they crafted yet another pitch-perfect party starter. Vote for the summer jam of 2010 in the MTV Newsroom now, and stay tuned for more on the hottest songs of the season. Related Videos Who Will Have The Song Of The Summer? ‘Sex And The City 2’ Stars Pick Their Favorite Boyfriends Of All Time

Some of their obscure choices might surprise even hard-core ‘SATC’ fans. By Jocelyn Vena Kristin Davis and Sarah Jessica Parker in “Sex and the City 2” Photo: Warner Bros. Over the years, there have been many memorable men in the lives of the four women on “Sex and the City.” There have been husbands and bad first dates, heartbreakers and one-night stands — and then there are the men who left an impression on the four women who play Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda. Cynthia Nixon said now-husband Steve is her choice for Miranda’s best boyfriend of all time. “Of course, David Eigenberg is the favorite boyfriend,” she told MTV News. “But perhaps because he’s my husband, he doesn’t count.” Her next favorite is a fan favorite. “So I would say Dr. Robert. I would say Blair Underwood.” For Kristin Davis, who plays the slightly prudish Charlotte, her top contender had to be Hollywood playboy Wylie Ford, who showed up in season two to bring her along for one fast-paced ride. “Brian Van Holt,” she said, picking the “Cougar Town” actor as her fave. “Do I have to say why?” Leave it to Kim Cattrall to have the wildest choice for her top “SATC” boy toy. We’ll just let her explain. “Bobby Cannavale [in season three]. I thought he was great. I think he’s a good actor, and he was so much fun to play with, and he was up for it,” she dished. “We did the ‘funky sp—‘ episode together, which is a tough one, because it could have gone terribly wrong.” While Aidan and Mr. Big are the fans’ favorites for Carrie’s men, Sarah Jessica Parker opted for politician Bill Kelley from season three. “John Slattery,” she said without missing a beat. Who is your favorite “SATC” boyfriend? Tell us in the comments! It’s “Sex and the City 2” Week at MTV News! Check out everything we’ve got on the film!
