This Historically Black University Will Make History In Medical Marijuana Industry

A historically Black university in Louisiana is trying to make its mark in the medical marijuana industry. Southern University and Agricultural and Medicinal College in Baton Rouge will launch a medical marijuana program after a contract with Advanced Biomedics, a Louisiana-based company specializing in pharmaceutical-grade marijuana products, was approved on Friday (May 25). The move will make the HBCU the first to start a program about legalized cannabis, WAFB , a Baton Rouge news source, reported. “This is a momentous event,” Bobby R. Phills , chancellor of the Southern University Agricultural Center and dean of the school’s College of Agricultural, Family and Consumer Sciences, said in a news release. “We are extremely excited to be able to provide quality medicine for the citizens of Louisiana.” Southern University Set to Launch First Medical Marijuana Program https://t.co/WjugGk6MPZ — HBCU Buzz (@HBCUBuzz) May 31, 2018 Southen University has joined the cannabis ranks with Louisiana State University, with both public schools set to cultivate and research marijuana in campus facilities, Mic reported. No other institutions have been designated as legal growers and researchers of medical cannabis in the state, which legalized the substance in 2016 but prohibited recreational use. Southern University Agricultural Research and Extension Center, which focuses on livestock, farming research and community education, will oversee the program, according to the report. Advanced Biomedics is set to automatically renew its contract with the school for two consecutive five-year periods. The university is set to make a sizeable amount from the marijuana facilities, Phillis added. The Agricultural Research Center will receive $6 million, and Southern will get a $1 million signing bonus with each contract renewal. “This groundbreaking research opportunity will also provide revenue for the University and economic development in North Baton Rouge,” the chancellor said. Southern University’s product will be ready for distribution at Louisiana dispensaries in early 2019. Ben Carson Hires Son Of A Close Friend Who Was Convicted Of Healthcare Fraud

B en Carson  continues his reign of foolishness as the secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The former doctor’s policies are horrendous, from his family’s alleged involvement to a proposal to raise the rent on low-income people to blocking Obama’s Small Area Fair Market Rent rule.  In addition, the team he has hired is equally ridiculous, especially those who attack journalists or lie to media outlets. Carson’s latest hire is seriously problematic. See Also: Ben Carson Called Black Illinois Town A ‘Dying Community’ And Is Doing Nothing To Fix It According to CNN.com , Carson hired 29-year-old Alfonso Costa Jr. who, according to HUD spokesman Raffi Williams, “is a graduate of Yale, Oxford and Harvard Law.” Costa Jr. will serve as Carson’s deputy chief of staff, but CNN.com reports his father, Al Costa , is one of Carson’s BFFs who is a dentist-turned-real-estate-investor. In 2007, Carson said about Costa that he is “one of my closest, if not my very closest friend.” In addition, Ben and Candy Carson had a real estate deal with Costa. But here is the strangest part:  CNN.com  reports Costa was convicted of healthcare fraud in 2007, and Ben Carson wrote to the judge on his behalf at the sentencing, “I could literally trust him with all of my earthly possessions and rest assured that I would get all of them back with interest. To sum it up, next to my wife of 32 years, there is no one on this planet that I trust more than Al Costa.” Reportedly , Costa charged insurance companies $44,000 in dental work that was never done. He was facing 18 months in prison, but only received three years probation. In 2015, Mother Jones reported that Costa and Carson were business associates and Carson profited somewhere between $200,000 and $2 million for a suburban Pittsburgh office building that he owned and Costa’s firm managed. Now, Costa’s son will be working for HUD. This is one of many strange hires at HUD. Earlier this month,  CNN.com  reported former Uber driver  Andrew Hughes , 32, was hired to be Ben Carson’s chief of staff at HUD. Outside of degrees from Ivy League schools — that nearly any person with wealthy parents can receive — there is no explanation of what experience 29-year-old Alfonso Costa Jr. has to be a deputy chief of staff. Just over three years since debate over the color of a certain dress nearly tore families apart, a new question has arisen over social media. And it's a very simple one: Laurel or Yannny? Allow is to explain… Earlier this week, a woman named Cloe Feldman posted a video on her Instagram story, one that was short and sweet and straightforward. “What do you hear? Yanny or Laurel,” asked the footage. Despite the footage clearly saying Laurel (let's be honest here, people), the mere uttering of this single word has divided Hollywood. Ellen DeGeneres, for example, thinks she knows the answer: Literally everything at my show just stopped to see if people hear Laurel or Yanny. I hear Laurel.
