Jay tells NPR he finds it ‘strange’ the lowest point of George W. Bush’s presidency was ‘somebody talking about him.’ By Kara Warner Jay-Z Photo: Bryan Bedder/Getty Images Jay-Z continued to promote his new book, “Decoded,” on Tuesday (November 16) with an interview on NPR’s “Fresh Air,” where he addressed many topics, including former President George W. Bush’s recent comments about Jay’s good friend Kanye West. Bush’s admission that West’s Hurricane Katrina rant was the low point of his presidency struck Jay-Z as odd. “First, I find it strange, like everyone else should, that one of his lowest points was somebody talking about him,” Jay-Z said of Kanye’s infamous “George Bush doesn’t care about black people” comment. “He’s the president. People should insult him a lot. That’s part of the job description.” He went on to reiterate an excerpt from “Decoded” in which he talks about how the mishandling of the rescue/relief efforts after Hurricane Katrina affected him. “It didn’t feel like a natural disaster; it felt like it was happening directly to blacks, and immediately those images of people in suits getting beaten, sprayed with hoses, beaten on the bridge at Selma, all these emotions were going on inside of us,” Jay said. “Kanye really spoke what everyone else felt.” The NPR interviewer also asked Jay for his evaluation of President Obama’s work thus far, and he said Bush’s legacy — “the worst eight years of our life” — was a big obstacle for Obama to overcome. “I think he’s had so many challenges,” he said. “I applaud his efforts and where he’s going. Of course, it’s not 100 percent, but you have to take into context what he inherited and what he’s working with. John King Bashes Obama for Calling Fox ‘Destructive’ and MSNBC ‘Invaluable’

CNN’s John King on Wednesday mocked Barack Obama for calling Fox News a “destructive” force in our society while at practically the same time a White House spokesman was saying MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow provide “an invaluable service” to the country. As NewsBusters reported Tuesday, the President bashed FNC in a just-published interview with Rolling Stone magazine shortly before his Deputy Press Secretary Bill Burton was praising MSNBC during a gaggle held on Air Force One. With this in mind, on Wednesday’s “John King USA,” the host surprisingly derided the White House’s inconsistency (video follows with partial transcript and commentary):  JOHN KING, HOST: Sometimes you feel sad to be left out of a big debate. This is not one of those sometimes. In an interview with “Rolling Stone,” President Obama voiced the opinion that Fox News is a “destructive” force in our society. On the other hand, the left hand in this case, Obama spokesman Bill Burton said the President believes MSNBC commentators Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow provide “an invaluable service” to that same society and democracy. So, according to the President this is “destructive.” King then played clips from “The Glenn Beck Show” and “Hannity.” After they concluded, King said, “And, according to the White House, this is ‘an invaluable service.'” He then showed clips from “The Ed Show” and “Countdown.” After getting some opinions from his panel, he turned to CNN contributor Gloria Borger and asked, “What happened to this? This is the President of the United States, it’s May 1st, it’s the University of Michigan, he’s giving the commencement speech, and Professor Obama is trying to tell Americans of all political persuasions, ‘Listen to each other.'” BARACK OBAMA: For if we choose only to expose ourselves to opinions and viewpoints that are in line with our own, studies suggest that we become more polarized, more set in our ways. After the clip ended, King said to his guests, “I think he’s right. In that commencement speech, he’s right.” Indeed, but as NewsBusters reported at the time, Obama didn’t mean those words. Quite the contrary, what has come out of this White House in the past week is exactly how he feels, and that commencement address in May was just another in a never ending litany of campaign speeches Americans should take with a grain of salt. Somewhat surprisingly, King not only seems to be feeling that way, but he’s also willing to point out the hypocrisy on the air. Bravo, John. Bravo.

Likely Voters Steer Clear of MSNBC, Don’t Like or Don’t Know Prime Time Talkers

According to a recent poll, likely voters get their political news primarily from cable television. Among cable channels, 42 percent, a plurality, watch Fox News for its political coverage. Only 12 percent said they watched MSNBC. What’s more, most likely voters don’t like or have never heard of MSNBC’s prime time talent. The poll , conducted by Politico and George Washington University, used a sample split evenly between political parties – even slightly favoring Democrats in some areas : 41 percent of respondents identified as Republicans, while 42 percent said they were Democrats. Forty-four percent said they usually vote for Republicans, while 46 percent answered Democrats. Forty-eight percent voted for Obama, while only 45 percent voted for McCain. Even among this group, Fox News is by far the most popular cable outlet. CNN comes in at second, with 30 percent. A sorry MSNBC brings up the rear. Among cable news personalities, FNC’s Bill O’Reilly – consistently the highest-rated cable news talker – is the most popular. Forty-nine percent of respondents said they thought O’Reilly has a positive impact on the American political conversation. Thirty-two percent said he has a negative impact. Interestingly, respondents – again, split evenly among the two parties – thought all three of Fox’s evening opinion commentators (O’Reilly, Glenn Beck, and Sean Hannity) have a net positive impact on the national debate. All three have a positive spread in the category. Also of note, for none of the three did majorities answer “never heard of”. MSNBC’s hosts are a different story. Only 23 percent said Keith Olbermann has a positive impact on the debate, while 25 said he has a negative one. A plurality, 42 percent, had never heard of him But at least it was only a plurality. Majorities said they have never heard of Ed Schultz or Rachel Maddow – 70 percent and 55 percent, respectively. The positive impact/negative impact responses were split down the middle for both. In other words, the vast majority of likely voters either do not like MSNBC’s prime time talkers, or have never heard of them (with the notable exception of Chris Matthews, whose name was not included in the poll). “How did it get to this state?” wonders Ed Morrissey . After all, NBC had a long history in television news, starting decades before CNN and even longer than Fox. Its partnership with Microsoft should have given the cable news network a distinct advantage in the New Media world. Their roster of news anchors, present and future, should have immediately challenged CNN for primacy and marginalized Fox, who may have had cash but relatively fewer newsgathering resources in the US when it launched. Under the direction of GE’s Jeff Immelt, though, NBC’s cable network went for the full-insane demographic. Fox took CNN’s talking-head format and simply reversed the bias, although Fox rightly argues that it presents more opposing viewpoints than CNN did as part of their establishment talent and not just occasional guests and party spinmeisters. NBC decided to emulate Air America with its cable lineup instead, perhaps seeing some opportunity in the last Bush term to capitalize on his unpopularity and become a center of opposition opinion. Rather than accomplish that, the decision by NBC and its parent GE has not just destroyed MSNBC’s credibility but also NBC’s as well. With the exception of Joe Scarborough, who is hard to pigeonhole but certainly isn’t a hard-Left hysteric, the entire lineup is exactly what one would find on the failed libtalker radio network. It’s no coincidence that two of its featured hosts come straight out of Air America, Rachel Maddow and Ed Schultz. Maddow has, at least, produced a watchable show, albeit with a hard-Left tilt that clearly is out of touch with the mainstream, but Schultz is barely coherent. Top that off with a daily “news” broadcast from Keith Olbermann that almost literally consists of a Two Minute Hate (Olbermann’s WPIW lists), and it’s a recipe for the kind of disaster that only political hacks could love. The wonder is that GE and NBC apparently seem content to alienate 88% of the viewing audience with its trainwreck theater.

Sunday’s Today show on NBC and Sunday Morning on CBS presented seemingly contradictory polling results on how much ObamaCare is supported by the American public, although both seemed to be citing the same AP poll. As Meet the Press host David Gregory appeared on Today, anchor Lester Holt suggested that Republicans are going against the majority of Americans in promising to repeal ObamaCare as he vaguely referred to polling data and contended, “But new polling out suggests that most people not only do they not want to, don’t want it repealed, they want more added to it,” and added, “Do Republicans have to refine this message and take a better look at it?” According to the AP poll as reported at msnbc.com , “four in 10 adults think the new law did not go far enough to change the health care system.” By contrast, on Sunday Morning, CBS anchor Charles Osgood briefly recounted numbers from the AP poll which suggested that ObamaCare is unpopular. Osgood: “A poll commissioned by the Associated Press finds just 30 percent of Americans in favor of the new health care law, 30 percent are neutral, and 40 percent oppose it. Four out of 10 respondents say the new law doesn’t do enough to change the health care system.” Returning to NBC, Gregory did not comment directly on whether he believed the poll’s accuracy, as he argued that the Republican message may indeed be successful, and went on to raise the theory from the left that ObamaCare will become more popular as people benefit from it: If the message is government’s out of control, they passed this huge entitlement, it’s going to cost a lot of money and have you felt the effects of it yet, I think that has the shot to be a winning political message. But the more people start to feel health care reform, so the argument goes, it will become more popular. But that has not exactly been the case across the board yet with health care reform, and that’s why the President has to keep hammering away at it. One of the things they talked about was going after the health care, repealing the health care bill. But one thing that’s similar is that what’s more important than the Pledge to America, what’s more important than the Contract with America is the political climate in which they’re operating. The truth is it’s the unpopularity of President Obama and his policies right now that’s hurting democrats more than faith in the Republicans which, by the way, is an argument that the Presidents trying to exploit and say, look, the alternative is not the way to go here.

Lawrence O’Donnell starts his new show The Last Word on Monday night, and over the past few years, O’Donnell put together quite the audition tape to land him a hosting gig for the ever more left-leaning network. On November 13th, 2009 , substitute hosting for Keith Olbermann on his MSNBC show Countdown, O’Donnell engaged in a favorite pastime of that show’s regular host, bashing Rush Limbaugh and Sarah Palin as he managed to paint both of them as idiots in one single rant. O’DONNELL: Breaking news; in our third story in the Countdown, Levi Johnston has seen Sarah Palin’s Oprah prompted invitation to Thanksgiving dinner, and says, quote, “You can tell by her laugh that she was full of it.” Meantime, Rush Limbaugh calls Palin’s book, quote, “truly one of the most substantive policy books I’ve read,” end quote. Rush, I believe you. I cannot imagine you, in full recline on your Gulfstream, Cuban cigar in hand, struggling to get through a more substantive policy book than Sarah’s index and footnote free, score settling campaign memoir. No mind numbing charts or graphs, no big words, no scholarly Latin phrases, like caveat emptor. And I bet the pictures are, like, amazing. O’Donnell is definitely not a fan of outspoken conservatives. In addition to Palin and Limbaugh, the new MSNBC host went after Dick Cheney on May 21, 2009, following a speech by the former Vice President that was aired live on MSNBC: “He came today to obviously to do nothing much other than defend torture, which he calls ‘tough questioning.’ This was as sleazy a presentation by a vice president as we’ve had since Spiro Agnew. This was an absolute abomination.” Cheney, like most of O’Donnell’s foils, is cast as a passionate liar: He cannot, ever, frame the other side’s position honestly. What you saw with Obama earlier was Obama describes the other side’s position fairly. He then goes on to advance his position. Cheney comes out and lies about the other side, it’s the only way he can talk. He says that Obama will not use the word ‘terrorist,’ when Obama does indeed use that word. He pretends that all we did was tough questioning. He says that 9/11 — he says that 9/11 made everyone take a second look at the threat. That is a lie. Dick Cheney and the President were in possession of memos that said this threat was present, this particular methodology was going to come, that they were going to use airliners. He and the President failed in their first nine months in office to pay any attention to the A.Q. Khan network, who he now wants to take credit for dismantling. What did Cheney do before 9/11? He denies, in this speech, that 9/11 changed him and then describes his very specific activities on 9/11, which were frightening for the Vice President. Then he goes on to say that he thinks about it every day. This guy just has to lie from beginning to end through his setup of his opposition’s position in order to advance any of his ideas at all, none of which have any proof to them at all. O’Donnell is not shy about revealing his liberal economic leanings either as he, on two separate occasions came forward to admit he’s downright socialistic when it comes to fiscal policy . Appearing on MSNBC’s Morning Joe on February 12th 2010, he told host Joe Scarborough that “We’re socialists, not Marxists,” and when he guested on Scarborough’s March 16th, 2010 radio show confessed: “We liberal Keynesians do not raise taxes in recessions; we raise taxes when you’re making money. That’s when we raise taxes. And we love to do it.” JOE SCARBOROUGH: Lawrence O’Donnell, you were part of the largest tax increase of all-time– O’DONNELL: –The biggest. SCARBOROUGH: –with Bill Clinton. 250 billion dollars. You say Barack Obama’s health care bill will double that– O’DONNELL: –Almost. SCARBOROUGH: –and will raise almost 500 billion dollars.            O’DONNELL: And do so–and here’s the really important economic principle that’s shocking for anyone who’s take the introductory course: they’re going to do it in a recession. You know… [Laughter] O’DONNELL: We, we, we liberal, we liberal Keynesians do not raise taxes in recessions; we raise taxes when you’re making money. That’s when we raise taxes. And we love to do it.

At Media Bistro on Friday, Gail Shister transcribed Jonathan Klein’s post-mortem spin on why he was let go from CNN/US. You see, Klein’s problem was that he “was unable to stop the prime-time bleeding with non-partisan programming.” In case any readers here might be tempted to take Klein’s contention or Shister’s transcription seriously, here are NewsBusters links to posts about Rick Sanchez , Larry King , CNN Headline’s Joy Behar , Christiane Amanpour ( before she went to ABC ), and Aaron Brown , who left CNN in late 2005. Here are several paragraphs of Shister’s schtick (bolds are mine), which you’ll see at least has an inadvertently accurate title: CNN Shift: Jon Klein on his dismissal: ‘It came out of left field’ Getting shot as a way of being fired isn’t always a bad thing, says Jonathan Klein. “It’s like a sudden ’Sopranos’ ending to your job,” says Klein, who earlier today had compared his sudden departure as CNN/U.S. president to getting shot. “There’s something to be said for quick and painless. It was surprising, but certainly quick. There was no rancor associated it.” During his six-year run, Klein was unable to stop the prime-time bleeding with non-partisan programming. Conversely, his replacement, HLN’s Ken Jautz, found great success by wrangling big-buzz opinion-makers Nancy Grace and Glenn Beck. Contrary to conventional wisdom, Klein says it is still possible for a cable news network to succeed in prime time without having a political spin a la Fox (right) or MSNBC (left). The key is in finding the right talent. “Other networks might be amusing or entertaining, but how many are truly essential viewing,” Klein says. “The challenge is to be interesting when you follow that non-partisan path and you really nail it. Then you become essential, like ’60 Minutes.'” “You need the right people in the right format. When CNN was at its best, we were essential viewing.” … CNN remains committed to non-partisan programming, Klein says. Otherwise, management would have made its move earlier, before the new schedule was locked in, he explains. Klein’s citation of ’60 Minutes’ as ‘non-partisan’ is about as ridiculous as it gets ( here’s a link to previous NewsBusters posts about “60 Minutes,” which contains over 200 entries, the vast majority of which are not complimentary), and Klein of all people should know it. In September 2004 , shortly before he joined CNN, Klein, who left CBS after 17 years in 1999, went on Fox’s O’Reilly Factor to defend a ’60 Minutes’ report on George W. Bush’s Texas Air National Guard (TANG) service. During that interview Klein criticized bloggers and others in the alternative media who had exposed clearly fraudulent documents used in that report, saying that “you couldn’t have a starker contrast between the multiple layers of checks and balances, and a guy sitting in his living room in his pajamas writing what he thinks.” Klein’s reference to “60 Minutes” in the above excerpt would appear to indicate that he hasn’t gotten the message that the guys in pajamas were proven right, CBS was proven wrong, and the substance-free Bush-TANG report was a blatantly partisan pre-election hit piece. That kool-aid Klein is drinking must be really powerful stuff. As we get closer to the midterm elections, and liberals in the media foresee the Democrat destruction about to commence, the scorn being tossed at conservatives and Tea Party members is reaching a fevered pitch. New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd is a perfect example. Her “Slouching Toward Washington” piece published Sunday is nothing but a personal attack on those possibly interfering with her dream of a United States Socialist Republic. Even more despicably, she used HBO’s Bill Maher to assist her: Bill Maher continued his video torment of O’Donnell by releasing another old clip of her on his HBO show on Friday night, this time showing one in which she argued that “Evolution is a myth.” Maher shot back, “Have you ever looked at a monkey?” To which O’Donnell rebutted, “Why aren’t monkeys still evolving into humans?” The comedian has a soft spot for the sweet-faced Republican Senate candidate from Delaware, but as he told me on Friday, it’s “powerful stupid to think primate evolution could happen fast enough to observe it. That’s bacteria. “I find it so much more damaging than the witch stuff because she could be in a position to make decisions about scientific issues, like global warming and stem cells, and she thinks primate evolution can happen in a week and mice have human brains.” Isn’t   it quite telling that the Left has become so devoid of quotable thinkers amongst its political ranks that media members now have to seek the opinion of comedians? It shouldn’t be at all surprising that Democrats are in so much trouble when the most important liberal figures in the nation other than the President appear to be Maher, Jon Stewart, and Stephen Colbert. But I digress: Sarah Palin will believe global warming is a hoax until she’s doing aerial hunting of wolves underwater. And in a 2009 clip, Sharron Angle, the Republican Senate candidate from Nevada, suggested that autism – a word she uttered with air quotes – is a phony rubric. She suggested that people are taking advantage of such maladies to get extra health benefits, adding that she doesn’t see why she should have to subsidize maternity benefits for other people either, especially since, as she said, she’s not having any more babies. Newt Gingrich, Sarah Palin, John Boehner, Jim DeMint and some Tea Party types don’t merely yearn for the country they idealize from the 1950s. They want to go back to the 1750s. Joe Miller, the Palin-blessed Republican nominee for Senate in Alaska, suggests that Social Security is unconstitutional because it wasn’t in the Constitution. The Constitution is a dazzling document, but do these originalists really think things haven’t changed since then? If James Madison beamed down now, he would no doubt be stunned at the idea that America had evolved so far but was hemming itself in by the strictest interpretation of his handiwork. He might even tweet about it. Actually, if Madison could see what has happened to this country since it began dabbling with socialism in the ’30s, he’d likely be far more shocked by that then the technological advancements that have occurred since he passed away. Most of our Founding Fathers would likely disapprove of Social Security, Medicaid, Medicare, welfare, and ObamaCare, but folks like Dowd and her ilk don’t care. As for the Right wanting to take America back to the ’50s, from a political standpoint Dowd is close. As Tea Partiers have been saying for over eighteen months, the socialist policies enacted since the Depression are a large cause of this nation’s problems. They have negatively impacted us both financially and economically creating a constantly growing juggernaut that soaks more and more dollars from the system as it makes workers less motivated and our country less competitive in a global structure. If Dowd thinks many Americans are yearning for a bygone era when folks were rewarded to fend for themselves and their families rather than be penalized for their success she’s 100 percent right. But that’s not her   goal:  Evolution is no myth, but we may be evolving backward. Christine O’Donnell had better hope they don’t bring back witch burning. Not so, Ms. Dowd. Your side has had it their way for approaching 80 years. The leaders you admire promised a New Deal and a Great Society. Looking at the current landscape while one tries to gaze into the future, America today looks neither new nor great .  Of course, your side wants to blame all the problems on George W. Bush and the Republicans. Alas, it is you that are stuck in the past thinking that Depression Era concepts are today’s magic elixir. One more thing, Ms. Dowd: If James Madison were alive today, he’d be a Tea Partier.

Liberal radio host Bill Press on Friday called Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh, and Bill O’Reilly bullies and cowards for never bringing people on their programs that disagree with them. Most comically, Press made this pathetic and indefensible remark on MSNBC, the nation’s most biased cable news network that hires anchors who categorically refuse to allow any dissenting views on their shows. But Press was clearly missing the irony in the following position espoused on “The Ed Show” as was the host who seemed to very much agree (video follows with transcript and commentary):  BILL PRESS: I tell you the other thing, Ed, the fact that Glenn Beck likes Chris Christie? Of course he does. He’s a bully too. You’ve got people every night on this show that disagree with you, and you have a good dialogue. Have ever heard anybody or seen anybody who disagrees on Glenn Beck or Bill O’Reilly or Rush Limbaugh or Sean Hannity? No. They’re all bullies, they’re all cowards, they’re all alike. That’s why they like Christie. That a so-called “news” network would allow such a completely erroneous view to be expressed while cameras are rolling is offensive to say the least. This is especially true coming from MSNBC which during extended prime time from 5PM to 11PM presents viewers with six straight hours of far-left content with little if any opposing viewpoints. Now, in fairness to Schultz, he does bring conservatives on his television show unlike colleague Keith Olbermann. But as can be seen from the following, Ed can be quite rude to callers to his radio program that disagree with him: Want to talk about bullies, Bill? As for allowing folks on shows that disagree with them, Press was way off base. Hannity almost always has a liberal on his “Great American Panel.” Here’s Kirsten Powers going after Sean a few hours after Press made his pathetic accusation:   What was that you were saying, Bill? As for Limbaugh, he had a liberal caller on Wednesday: CALLER: Hey, thank you. I wanted to take exception with your charge that the liberal media is simply trying to make Palin or O’Donnell portrayed as evil individuals. I mean any candidate who has made as many outlandish and sometimes ridiculous statements as those two is going to be under such scrutiny, and a good deal of it has come from the right as well.  Again, what was that you were saying, Bill? As for Beck, he takes liberal callers virtually every day. One this past week vehemently disagreed with Glenn’s view concerning Tea Partiers dressing up at rallies. Which brings us to O’Reilly who potentially epitomizes a commentator not only willing to allow opposing viewpoints on his program but also reveling in it. Bill has had classic on-air arguments with Geraldo Rivera and Megyn Kelly just to name a few. As readers are fully aware, liberal comedian Jon Stewart was O’Reilly’s guest on Wednesday as was Democrat strategist Janet Fleming. O’Reilly could possibly be the television commentator that allows – maybe even encourages – the most dissension on his program.  Add it all up, and Press’s remarks Friday were 100 percent false. But that shouldn’t come as a surprise to NewsBusters readers. As our publisher Brent Bozell noted in May, Press is ” preposterous .”

As the Media Research Center reported last month, there are some truly sick, hate-mongering liberal radio hosts in America today, and one of the most disgusting is Mike Malloy. On Friday, this vile miscreant with a microphone said on the air that Liz Cheney should be planning her father’s funeral rather than offering her opinions to the American people. This comes three months after Malloy told his listeners that he hoped former Vice President Dick Cheney would die in the hospital.  On this day, the subject was Liz’s comment concerning a Barack Obama quote about America being able to absorb a terrorist attack referenced in Bob Woodward’s new book (video follows with partial transcript and commentary, h/t Right Scoop ): MIKE MALLOY: Back to Cheney, whose father is directly responsible for every single death in Iraq since the invasion and occupation that he championed in 2003. He’s responsible, and that’s not just Americans and the wounding of Americans, but the deaths and wounding of, of countless hundreds of thousands of Iraqis. He is responsible for the deaths in Afghanistan, Cheney is. He is responsible for the deaths in New York City, at the Pentagon, and the plane crash in Pennsylvania. Dick Cheney is one of the bloodiest sons of bitches ever to have held power and office in this government in terms of deaths that were a direct result of his incompetence and his lies. Dick Cheney. Malloy then read Liz’s response to Obama’s “we can absorb a terrorist attack” remark: “Americans expect our President to do everything possible to defend the nation from attack. We expect him to use every tool at his disposal to find, defeat, capture and kill terrorists. We expect him to deter attacks by making clear to our adversaries that an attack on the United States will carry devastating consequences. Instead, President Obama is reported to have said, ‘We can absorb a terrorist attack.’ This comment suggests an alarming fatalism on the part of President Obama and his administration. Once again the President seems either unwilling or unable to do what it takes to keep this nation safe. The President owes the American people an explanation.” Malloy then went after Liz: MALLOY: Her father and her father’s puppet George at the very least allowed, at the very worst engineered the worst attack on this country since the War of 1812, and she has the audacity to make this kind of a statement. “Americans expect our President to do everything possible to defend the nation from attack.” Where was your father after he deliberately authorized a stand-down, on a day and a time when he knew there was going to be an effort made to attack this country? I don’t know why I give this psychopathic misdirected woman, you ought to be there planning your father’s funeral, Liz, because I’m sure all the nation’s bigwigs, especially the Republicans are going to fall all over themselves to worship in front of his coffin. That’s what you ought to be doing instead of making your filthy, insane, gratuitous statements about what the American people expects their president or an administration to do to protect us from terrorist attack. Shame on you, Liz Cheney. Go plan your father’s funeral. Just do that. Do at least one thing in your useless life that will have some meaning. Go plan his funeral. What the hell is happening to this nation? How did we come to a point that someone actually gets paid to make such vile statements over the airwaves? Regardless of the answers, I’m speechless and need desperately to go take a shower hoping with all my heart I can scrub this filth from my memory.
