Jay-Z, Kanye West’s ‘No Church’ Video Sparks Revolution

The Throne don’t appear in their new ‘No Church in the Wild’ video, but deliver a powerful clip all the same. By Rob Markman Jay-Z and Kanye West’s “No Church in the Wild” music video Photo: Vevo/ Def Jam/ Roc-A-Fella “Power concedes nothing without a demand”: If a quote could sum up the Throne’s “No Church in the Wild” music video, Frederick Douglass’ famed call for revolution might do it best. Neither Kanye West nor Jay-Z actually appear in their Romain Gavras-directed clip, which was released online Tuesday (May 29) — and, frankly, an appearance by the megastar duo could’ve very well hindered the powerful message they were trying to send. Moments before the beat builds, we see a young masked revolutionary ignite a Molotov cocktail and walk in slow motion toward a wall of police officers who stand unified, draped in riot gear. The clash begins with a fiery explosion in the middle of a Prague street. Gavras depicts a power struggle familiar to people all across the globe, whether in Los Angeles in 1992 or London in 2011. Set to the buzzing drums of the 88-Keys and Yeezy-produced track, ill-equipped freedom fighters with nothing to lose wage war against an oppressive regime. Of course, there is nothing in the video that directly details a specific storyline or plot: Instead, viewers are expected to rely on their own interpretations of the scenes that look taken straight from CNN. Fearless protestors hurl stones and fight armed officers using only their bare fists. In one scene, a cop who rides atop a horse chases a revolutionary down an alleyway and beats him with a club. Young men are beaten, choked, sprayed with mace and dragged across the concrete as Frank Ocean soulfully croons, “Will he make it out alive?” in time with the staged anarchy. The gritty violence and social commentary are reminiscent of Gavras’ video for M.I.A.’s “Born Free.” Though “No Church” isn’t as graphic (there’s no nudity or massive death scenes), it is moving all the same. By the end of the five-minute video, the freedom fighters seem to have notched a victory of some sort, standing in triumph in the face of their oppressors. But even if a single battle is won, there is no conclusive ending, meaning that the war still rages on. One of the catchiest lines in the song is a party-weary Kanye spitting, “Sunglasses and Advil/ Last night was mad real.” After the track’s war-torn visual, the lyric can (and should) take on new meaning. Chaz Ebert Writes to Absent Roger from Cannes

It seems Roger Ebert was unable to make the trek to Cannes , but his wife (and Ebert Co. VP) Chaz sends a report from the South of France with a fantastic breakdown of the fest’s offerings — and sweet words for Rog back home: “Today there may not be starlets jumping nude in the ocean, but we are still being given stories of young love and old love and passion and feelings and ideas that make life worth living. Thank you for introducing me to this world. Now I just want you to hurry back to it.” [ Chicago Sun-Times ]

Lil Wayne’s Deal ‘Biggest In Urban Music,’ Birdman Says

‘YMCMB start and stop with Wayne; it ain’t no YMCMB without Wayne,’ Birdman tells MTV News. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Lil Wayne Photo: Kevin Winter/Getty Images When Lil Wayne first signed with Cash Money Records as a pre-teen, he wasn’t the label’s biggest star, but these days, it’s impossible to imagine the premier rap label without Tunechi. With his most-recent deal, fans won’t have to fathom that possibility. A few weeks back, Weezy announced on MTV’s “Hip Hop POV” that he re-signed with Cash Money for a four-album deal, and since then, rumors have begun to surface that Birdman put up $150 million to retain Wayne’s recording rights. “YMCMB start and stop with Wayne; it ain’t no YMCMB without Wayne,” Birdman told MTV News correspondent Sway Calloway on Monday night while DJ Khaled was shooting his “Take It to the Head” video in L.A. On “POV,” Wayne said, “Everybody knows I came into the game at 11 years old with Cash Money Records, before we even had a major deal. We signed a deal in I don’t remember when, and I been with Cash Money ever since. So, if you’re looking for integrity, I am the definition. If you’re looking for a person that’s gonna stay down, I am the definition. If you’re looking for loyalty, I am just that.” Birdman wouldn’t confirm the exact figures in the deal, but he made it clear that when it comes to Wayne, who he considers a son, the sky is the limit. “The type of situation we did never been done in urban music; it’s probably the biggest deal ever in urban music,” he said. “I’m blessed to even do that — whatever my son want, he can get. It’s all his anyway, so it don’t really matter to me.” With Weezy as the flagship, the #1 Stunna hopes to grow his Cash Money/Young Money company into a billion-dollar brand. “That’s one of our goals, and the move we just made was a big move to that, to make sure the pioneer of it, which is Wayne,” he said. Tunechi’s next album will be I Am Not a Human Being II , and the new deal ensures that it won’t be his last. Baby is no doubt proud to continue doing business with Birdman Jr., but let him tell it, and it’s more than business: “This is for life,” he said. Are you looking forward to Lil Wayne’s next album? ‘The Voice’: Jermaine Paul, Juliet Simms Make The Finals

Tony Lucca and Chris Mann also advance to the final four, while Lindsay Pavao, Katrina Parker, Erin Willett and Jamar Rogers exit. By John Mitchell Christina Aguilera and Lindsay Pavao Photo: NBC The results are in, and the four “Voice” contestants moving on to the finals have been decided. Each artist was assigned two scores, both out of 100, following their performances on Monday night’s show . The first came from their respective judge, while America’s vote determined the other. The contestant from each team with the highest overall score advanced to the finals. With no last-chance performances or saves left in the game, the night’s singing came from last year’s top four: Dia Frampton, Vicci Martinez, Beverly McClellan and winner Javier Colon. Frampton, who repped Team Blake last year, was first to the stage, performing her new single “Don’t Kick the Chair” with Kid Cudi. If anything, the fact that Frampton remains a viable enough recording artist to be performing the lead single from her upcoming record with a major artist like Cudi is a testament to the fact that whether they advance or not, these folks will be just fine. After Frampton’s performance came the night’s first elimination. Aguilera evenly split her 100 points between her two contestants, Chris Mann and Lindsay Pavao, saying the two were so different and performed so strongly that she felt it right to let America decide who should advance. America’s vote was close, but ultimately it was Mann who prevailed, earning a total score of 104 to Pavao’s 96, meaning America’s vote went 54 to 46 in Mann’s favor. Season-one finalist Vicci Martinez performed her new single, “Come Along,” and she got a little hlp from mentor Cee Lo. Next up was Adam, who awarded Tony Lucca 60 points to Katrina Parker’s 40, saying that while Parker is easily the contest’s most improved contestant, he felt that, going into the finals, his connection with Lucca would better serve the rocker on his way to a potential victory. America, it seems, felt the same. Lucca prevailed with an overall score of 108. Parker did snag an impressive 48 points from America’s vote, though her total score of 92 fell short. Team Christina’s season one contestant, rocker Beverly McClellan, hit the stage next to perform “Money Changes Everything” with ’80s pop icon Cyndi Lauper. McClellan, like Frampton, has a new album, Fear Nothing, on the way, reaffirming the sentiment Adam shared with his own team when they were on the chopping block: that all the contestants should take the exposure they’ve gained being on such a popular platform and use it as a launching pad, as both Frampton and McClellan (regardless of the fact that they lost) clearly have. After last year’s winner, Team Adam’s Javier Colon, wowed the crowd with his new single “Drop in the Ocean,” Team Blake hit the ring to find out who would stay and who would go. Like Christina, Blake evenly divided his 100 points between Erin Willett and Jermaine Paul, saying he didn’t want to be part of the decision-making process anymore. (At least he was honest.) However, America went big for Jermaine, giving the former Alicia Keys backup singer a whopping 77 points for a 123 total. By comparison, Willett totaled only 77. The night’s biggest surprise came when Team Cee Lo stepped forward for elimination. Cee Lo chose to go the Adam route, splitting his points 60/40 between rocker Juliet Simms (60), whose performance of “It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World” earned the most praise of the night from the panel, and Jamar Rogers (40). With his compelling backstory and high-energy performances, Rogers has been a front-runner throughout the competition, but America clearly felt the same as the judges regarding Juliet. She snagged another 61 points from the public vote for a 121 total, besting Rogers’ combined 79. Moving on

James Cameron Denies Shooting ‘Avatar 2’ Footage During Dive

‘If they think of you first as a filmmaker, then all of the exploration stuff must be so that you can be a better filmmaker,’ he tells MTV News. By Kevin P. Sullivan, with reporting by Josh Horowitz James Cameron Photo: MTV News When James Cameron returned from this record-breaking deep-sea dive to the Mariana Trench, many people assumed the expedition must have been for a movie, most likely ” Avatar 2 ,” which is said to involve the oceans of Pandora. But Cameron, when he spoke with MTV News, insisted that is simply not the case. “Completely spurious rumor. People try to connect the dots, right? If they think of you first as a filmmaker, then all of the exploration stuff must be so that you can be a better filmmaker. Wrong conclusion,” he said. “That’s like [saying] ‘A frog with no legs is deaf.’ ” The director said the two aspects of his life are connected, but not in a way the rumors suspected. “The correct conclusion is I do the movies to pay for the expeditions, so every once in a while, I have to come back to make a movie,” Cameron said. “It’s pretty much that simple.” Even with films planned for the immediate future, Cameron doesn’t seem that worried about his explorations getting in the way. “I think the studio execs that want another ‘Avatar’ film are probably more concerned than I am,” he said. Cameron’s trips to the bottom of the ocean are admittedly dangerous, and he spoke openly about the potential risks involved with that kind of exploration. “I would say watch out for implosion. When a pressure vessel implodes at that kind of pressure, it does so at supersonic speed,” he said. “There are things worse, though, like coming up outside of the search area, because you’re bolted into the sub. You’re going down pretty far. It’s possible to come partway up, get moved 25 miles in a current before you come all the way up. That would be bad.” According to Cameron, that kind of morbid thinking is what prevents actual tragedies from occurring. “You could freeze to death at the bottom, you could have a fire inside the sphere and asphyxiate — all kinds of bad stuff. The reason you get morbid is by going through all the scenarios ahead of time, you’re doing the engineering to prevent them and you create all the procedures to prevent them,” Cameron said. “It’s basically what NASA does. You list every single thing that could go wrong, and then you do everything you can to have that not happen.” As for where Cameron hopes to explore next, he said the ocean will keep him busy for the foreseeable future. “We have a vehicle now that can go, by definition, to anywhere in any ocean in the world. If it can go to the deepest place in the Challenger Deep, 65,000 feet down, it can go anywhere else,” he said. “There’s so much yet to be explored. That’s an unknown continent on our planet. Think about Google. You can basically call up a satellite photograph of some hill in the Congo in seconds, but you can’t do that underwater. I could be exploring down there for the next whatever.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Avatar 2.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . James Cameron Reaches, Tweets From Ocean’s Deepest Point

In a milestone of human civilization right up there with landing on the moon and eating 68 hot dogs in 10 minutes , James Cameron reached the deepest point on the planet on Sunday — the Mariana Trench, nearly seven miles below the surface of the Pacific. Naturally, upon reaching bottom, he did what any record-setting blockbuster deep-sea diver would do: Tweeted. Just arrived at the ocean’s deepest pt. Hitting bottom never felt so good. Can’t wait to share what I’m seeing w/ you @ DeepChallenge — James Cameron (@JimCameron) March 25, 2012 Back from trip to deepest pl on Earth – #oceans hadal zone.Puts a new spin on “to hell and back”. Good to see the sunshine. #deepseachallenge — James Cameron (@JimCameron) March 26, 2012 It wasn’t all good, according to a report today from Cameron’s partners at National Geographic: The expedition was designed so that Cameron could spend up to six hours collecting samples and video at the bottom of the trench. But his mission was cut short due in part to a hydraulic fluid leak that coated the window of the sub’s “pilot sphere,” obscuring his view. “I lost hydraulics toward the latter part of dive, and I was unable to use the manipulator arm,” Cameron said this morning Considering the daunting task of sending humans into the deep, such technical glitches are to be expected, Cameron emphasized: “It’s a prototype vehicle, so it’s gonna take time to iron out the bugs.” And even with the hydraulic leak obscuring the explorer’s vision, word has it that the ocean floor looked better than Titanic 3D .
