‘Breaking Dawn’ Box Office: What It Means For ‘Part 2’

Box-office experts weigh in on whether ‘Twilight’ series can top blockbuster ‘Harry Potter’ finale. By Kevin P. Sullivan Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart in “Breaking Dawn – Part 1” Photo: Summit Opening weekend has come and gone for the first part of the “Twilight Saga” finale, and “Breaking Dawn – Part 1” bowed to an impressive $139.5 million at the box office , just short of the series-record $142 million for “New Moon” in 2009. But $139.5 million is certainly nothing to shake a stick at, and a number of box-office experts MTV News spoke with agreed that the number represents a serious accomplishment, despite coming up just short. “When the final numbers come in today, ‘Breaking Dawn’ will have the fifth-best opening ever, a record I’m sure every studio wouldn’t mind having,” said Jeff Bock, box-office analyst for Exhibitor Relations . “And even though ‘Breaking Dawn’ will always be in the shadow of ‘New Moon,’ which hit $142 million two years ago when it debuted over the same weekend, ‘Breaking Dawn,’ and the ‘Twilight’ franchise in general, is one of those rare commodities in Hollywood that sustains its audience from film to film.” The question of the drop in revenue from “New Moon” still remains. By normal box-office logic, returns would ramp up in anticipation for the finale, yet the penultimate entry in the series could not top the second. Phil Contrino, editor of Boxoffice.com , said it has to do with the fanbase. “I think a healthy portion of the audience is growing up and forgetting about this franchise. It’s not enough to put a significant dent in the grosses, but there’s definitely an impact,” he said. As “Breaking Dawn – Part 2” approaches, fans of both the “Harry Potter” and “Twilight” series anxiously await to see which finale will come out on top at the box office. Gitesh Pandya from Box Office Guru said Potter’s record will remain. “Since ‘Part 2’ is the final ‘Twilight’ film, I expect it to open a little higher and maybe even beat ‘New Moon,’ ” Pandya said. “But it won’t match the numbers for the final ‘Harry Potter’ unless it’s converted into 3-D.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . Robert Wagner to Blame For Death of Natalie Wood?

L.A. County Sherriff’s Office investigators’ decision to reopen the Natalie Wood case after three decades has raised suspicions of her husband, Robert Wagner. The captain of the boat that Wood, a major movie star at the time, mysteriously vanished from in 1981 is now blaming veteran actor Wagner for her death. The Tinseltown starlet died off of Santa Catalina Island in California after partying on a yacht one night with hubby Wagner and actor Christopher Walken. At the time, police said Wood, 43, accidentally fell overboard and drowned. Now the boat’s captain, Dennis Davern, is telling something of a different story. On Today, Davern said Robert Wagner, now 81, asked him not to take steps to find his wife. It was a matter of “We’re not going to look too hard,” he said. “We’re not going to turn on the search light, we’re not going to notify anybody right at the moment,” said Davern , who admitted that he lied at the time. “I made some terrible decisions and mistakes,” he said. “I did lie on a report years ago. I made mistakes by not telling the honest truth in a police report.” Asked if Wagner was “responsible” for Wood’s death, Davern said, “Yes I would say so.” Lana Wood, Natalie Wood’s sister, also spoke out about the case: Lana says she never believed Robert Wagner’s version of the events that led to Natalie’s death, and believes Robert wasn’t honest with investigators. She says she’s not buying the original story that Natalie was trying to secure a dinghy and fell overboard because she was deathly afraid of water. Natalie wouldn’t even go in her own pool, according to her sister. Natalie Wood Interview Lana Wood says Sheriff’s detectives interviewed her and specifically wanted to know if the relationship between Natalie and Robert was “volatile.” And, Lana says, if Wagner or anyone else is found to be responsible for Natalie’s death, they should be punished, despite the fact it’s 30 years later. Wood (1938-1981) and Wagner were married in 1957, divorced in 1962, then remarried in 1972. They have one daughter, Courtney, born in 1974. Despite the accusations of the captain, it is not known specifically what caused officials to reopen the case, and Wagner has never been a suspect. Wagner’s publicist, Alan Nierob, issued a statement saying the actor’s family “fully support the efforts of the LA County Sheriff’s Department.” The actor, who has a recurring role on NCIS , “trusts they will evaluate whether any new information relating to the death of Natalie Wood Wagner is valid.” Nierob said no authorities have contacted Wagner about the case.

Justin Bieber Paternity Suit Dropped, Lawyer Confirms

But Mariah Yeater attorney Jeffrey Leving tells MTV News negotiations are still ongoing. By Gil Kaufman Justin Bieber Photo: Getty Images A lawyer for Mariah Yeater confirmed reports Wednesday (November 16) that the California woman had dropped her paternity suit against Justin Bieber . After TMZ reported that Yeater had been dropped by the attorneys representing her and that they had withdrawn the claim last week, Chicago attorney Jeffrey Leving told MTV News that the suit is, technically, off but that negotiations are happening behind-the-scenes for a settlement. “We are still pursuing a DNA test and … if it’s positive, our desire for child support is still active,” said Leving, who confirmed that a motion to dismiss the paternity action was filed November 9 in San Diego. “We could refile the paternity case tomorrow if we wanted, but we are attempting to settle the case out of court.” Leving said his office is in negotiations with Bieber’s attorney in the case, Los Angeles-based Howard Weitzman, to settle the matter. Weitzman could not be reached for comment at press time. Can Justin Fight Back? See Bieber’s Options Leving said he was legally barred from commenting on his decision to withdraw the petition but described it as part of a strategy to negotiate a confidentiality agreement and child-support payments as part of an out-of-court settlement. He said his co-counsel in California had been in touch with Weitzman and that he has also brought on a detective to investigate what he claimed were death threats against Yeater. Though he is now directing the case, Leving said he has been involved from the beginning but did not participate in the decision by Yeater’s two former San Diego attorneys to file the paternity suit. He has also barred Yeater from doing any further media appearances or interviews. “She’s a 20-year-old single mom with no money and no job trying to raise an infant, and she’s being harassed and stalked,” he said. Last week, Bieber’s camp confirmed that the 17-year-old singer would take a paternity test as soon as he returns from a European promotional jaunt in celebration of his just-released Christmas album, Under the Mistletoe. Bieber’s team vigorously denied the claim from the moment Yeater launched the paternity action earlier this month. Yeater claimed in a signed affidavit in the suit that she had unprotected sex with Bieber last October in a backstage area at one of the singer’s concerts at Los Angeles’ Staples Center and that her 4-month-old baby is his. On Wednesday, Bieber’s spokesperson once again maintained the pop star’s innocence when asked to respond to reports that the suit had been dropped. “As we’ve said from the beginning, it’s sad that someone would fabricate such a malicious, defamatory, and demonstrably false claim,” Matthew Hiltzik said in a statement. “We’ll continue to consider all of our options to protect Justin.” Asked to respond to suggestions that the withdrawal of the paternity suit appeared to weaken Yeater’s claim, Leving said he felt just the opposite was true. “The case is stronger now because we can negotiate outside of court,” he said. “I believe her. I believe she had sexual intercourse with him and I do believe he is the father of the child.” Because Leving is pursuing a nondisclosure agreement, he said, ideally, nobody will know the results of the DNA test either way. “If it’s negative, we’ll deal with it. If it’s positive, we’ll deal with it when that happens,” he said. “But hopefully whether it’s positive or negative, nobody will know.” Should Justin sue Mariah Yeater? Weigh in on Facebook! Karen Kraushaar Becomes Second Herman Cain Accuser to Go Public

Karen Kraushaar was sexually harassed by Republican Presidential candidate Herman Cain in the 1990s and left her job because of it, she said yesterday. The became the second woman to come forward and put a name and face behind accusations that Cain sexually harassed her when she worked for him. Karen Kraushaar, now a spokeswoman for the Inspector General’s Office in the U.S Treasury Department and a former journalist, is pictured below: Kraushaar was one of the two women who received a financial settlement of about $45,000 after accusing Cain of sexual harassment in the 1990s. She worked at the National Restaurant Association while Cain headed the trade group. Sharon Bialek , who went public earlier, offered many more details. “She is a professional who had to leave her job because of Herman Cain. It is quite simple,” a former National Restaurant Association employee said of Kraushaar. The latest Herman Cain accuser told the N.Y. Times she hoped she and other accusers might hold a joint press conference “where all of the women would be together with our attorneys and all of this evidence would be considered together.” “These allegations can be considered together as a body of evidence.” Cain said Kraushaar’s allegations were the only ones he remembered, but that they – like the rest of the salacious claims made against him – are not credible. Will sexual harassment allegations derail the Cain Train?

Via TMZ : We’ve learned a 911 call was placed from Heavy’s Beverly Hills home around 11:25 AM to report an unconscious male on the walkway . He said the L.A. Coroner’s Office is looking into the cause of death, and that an investigation is under way. “It’s in its infancy stage right now. We don’t have a lot of other information,” Harvey said. “Our guess is that the examination could occur as early as tomorrow, and any final cause of death would be deferred pending a toxicology test.” This one is hard one for any 80s/90s Hip-Hop kid. SMH: Wife Who Tried To Murk Her Husband While Dressed In Bubble Wrap Pleads Not Guilty

Wives are getting ruthless and creative when killing their husbands these days: A Los Altos woman pleaded not guilty on Thursday to stabbing her estranged husband in what a prosecutor describes as a carefully plotted attempt to kill. Laura Jean Wenke, 50, is charged with attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon and assault with a stun gun. San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said Wenke carefully plotted the attack. On Sept. 15, Wenke dressed herself in coveralls, rubber boots and bubble wrap and she went to his office in Redwood City. Her husband was working at his computer at Wenke Construction when his wife attacked, Wagstaffe said. Wenke shot a stun gun into her estranged husband’s side, stabbed him in the neck and stabbed his chest while he was still sitting at his computer, according to investigators. The husband called 911 and police officers said they found him outside the building bleeding in the parking lot. His wife was still in his office, her bubble wrap outfit streaked with blood, when officers arrested her. The husband survived the attack. Wenke is currently in jail without bail. Prosecutors said Wenke attacked her husband because she was livid that he had a new girlfriend. The Los Altos couple filed for divorce in August 2010 and was separated at the time of the suspected stabbing. Bubble wrap, though??? Shawty Redd Cleared Of Murder Charges

Rap producer was charged in the fatal shooting of Damon Martin. By Rob Markman Shawty Redd in police custody on January 1, 2010 Photo: Henry County Sheriff’s Office Rap producer Shawty Redd can now put his legal troubles behind him. MTV News learned exclusively from Redd’s attorney Ashutosh Joshi on Thursday (November 3) that the Atlanta hitmaker has been found not guilty of murder, as well as lesser charges he was hit with after the fatal 2010 New Year’s Day shooting of Damon Martin. The bench trial, which began Monday, was decided by a judge without a jury and concluded Wednesday. On Thursday, Judge Wade Crumbly cleared the “Who Dat” producer (real name: Demetrius Lee Stewart) on all charges relating to Martin’s death. Redd was arrested January 1, 2010, after police responded to a call about an early morning shooting at Stewart’s home in Hampton, Georgia. According to police, the producer was involved in a physical altercation at his home with Martin, who was described as an “acquaintance.” The confrontation turned physical and Stewart shot and killed Martin, according to the report. Stewart himself called 911 to alert police about the shooting and was arrested a few hours later. “The defense [in the trial] was clearly self-defense,” Joshi told MTV News. “We argued that Redd’s life was threatened both verbally and physically, and this occurred in his home and that he shot this gentleman as a result of that.” Shawty Redd got his start producing a number of underground tracks for Young Jeezy, as well as six tracks from his platinum debut Let’s Get It: Thug Motivation 101. He got the most attention working with Snopp Dogg on his 2008 single “Sexual Eruption” and has also worked with Gucci Mane, Pusha T and Rick Ross. Related Artists Shawty Redd
