Jalen Rose’s Detroit High School Has A 93 Percent Graduation Rate

I t’s been nine years since retired NBA star Jalen Rose opened the doors to a charter school that he created in Detroit and his effort to further education in the area has proven to be a success. According to Ebony , Rose’s school has a 93 percent graduation rate and a 100 percent college acceptance rate. Jalen Rose says In June, it will be the first time JRLA scholars that graduated from colleges across the country will have the opportunity to attend our graduation and speak to the graduates of our senior class. https://t.co/iWCaQoxBwN — EBONY MAGAZINE (@EBONYMag) October 28, 2018 The school—which is called the Jalen Rose Leadership Academy—was created for youth in the 9th through 12th grade, the news outlet writes. There are currently 400 students who attend the school. In an effort to ensure that students feel supported throughout their high school journey and after graduation, each student has a support group that is made up of current students and those who have graduated to help them stay on track. JRLA also provides students with leadership courses that delve into how to navigate real-life situations surrounding drugs, violence, and other issues that they may have to confront in their everyday lives. The school also emphasizes the importance of civic engagement and empowers its students to evoke change in their communities. JRLA is tuition-free and has an open enrollment. Rose says that he understands the essentiality of having access to a good education. “Education is a valuable tool that unlocks the future of so many young people, and the dynamics in our country have changed, which is [why I chose to] be the founder of a tuition-free public charter high school that gets zero state funding for the facility,” he told the news outlet. “It’s crucial for us to get our scholars out in the community to do charity work and to give them the life skills they will need to be successful in the endeavors that they have, and it’s more for us than just obviously the curriculum that’s required to graduate from school.” Rose isn’t the only celebrity who is using his platform and resources to further education. Almost a year after opening a charter school in Harlem, Sean Combs recently announced that he will donate $1 million for the creation of a school in the Bronx. Brian Kemp’s Latest Move Shows His ‘Desperation,’ Stacey Abrams Says

G eorgia’s Democratic nominee for governor Stacey Abrams dismissed her GOP rival Brian Kemp ’s latest maneuver as a “desperate” attempt to distract voters. SEE ALSO: Stacey Abrams’ Unapologetically Black Journey To The Doorstep Of History Appearing Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union with Jake Tapper,” the host Jake Tapper  informed Abrams that Kemp, who’s also Georgia secretary of state, opened an investigation of the Georgia Democratic Party into possible cybercrimes. Kemp reportedly alleges that state Democrats may have hacked into Georgia’s voter registration system. “This is a desperate attempt on the part of my opponent to distract people from the fact that two different federal judges found him derelict in his duty and forced him to allow absentee ballots to be counted,” she said after hearing about Kemp’s allegations for the first time. Abrams could make history on Tuesday as the nation’s first African-American woman governor. Kemp, who oversees the state’s election system, has tried to  use every trick in the book  to suppress the Black vote for the 2018 election. Former President  Jimmy Carter  asked Kemp to  recuse him to ensure a fair election . But Kemp continues to decline. A separate court upheld those two decisions on Friday . Meanwhile, a white supremacist group is suspected of sending out racist robocalls to an unknown number of Georgia voters, the Associated Press reported on Saturday. The automated calls reportedly included impersonations of Oprah Winfrey , who led a rally on Thursday for Abrams. An Idaho man named Scott Rhodes is believed to be behind the calls through his organization The Road to Power, which is also linked to racist robocalls targeting Tallahassee’s African-American Mayor Andrew Gillum who’s running for governor of Florida. The calls came days after President Donald Trump , who endorsed Kemp, called Abrams unqualified to be governor . “He’s wrong,” Abrams told CNN on Sunday, pointing to her academic and work background. Abrams noted that she was the Democratic leader in the Georgia House of Representative for seven years, a deputy city attorney and a successful businesswoman. “I think they are seeing the same numbers we’re seeing. Early voting is up dramatically,” Abrams stated. “We have a plan in place for remarkable turnout on Election Day…and I think they’re (Kemp and Trump) getting scared.” SEE ALSO: Mayor Andrew Gillum Temporarily Suspends Campaign After Shooting In Tallahassee Can Oprah Winfrey Help Stacey Abrams Win Georgia? Trump Lashes Out At Oprah Over “60 Minutes” Interview, “Hope Oprah Runs So She Can Be Defeated And Exposed!”

Dennis Van Time/Future Image/WENN/IanWilson/WENN Trump Attacks Oprah Over “60 Minutes” Segment The crazy Cheetoh in the White House has had another Twitter temper tantrum , this time directed at Oprah Winfrey. Just watched a very insecure Oprah Winfrey, who at one point I knew very well, interview a panel of people on 60 Minutes. The questions were biased and slanted, the facts incorrect. Hope Oprah runs so she can be exposed and defeated just like all of the others! — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) February 19, 2018 ‘Just watched a very insecure Oprah Winfrey, who at one point I knew very well, interview a panel of people on 60 Minutes,’ Trump tweeted late Sunday. ‘The questions were biased and slanted, the facts incorrect. Hope Oprah runs so she can be exposed and defeated just like all of the others!’ The man is nuts. It’s pretty hard to make a case for Oprah being biased as the “60 Minutes” panel featured seven Michigan voters who voted in favor of Trump and another seven who voted against him. And if Trump WAS watching he’d know Oprah said she wouldn’t be running because she addressed that as well. Watch her discuss below: Do you think he’ll ever stop tweeting erratically? Ellen DeGeneres Pays Tribute to Late Father

It may be the job of Ellen DeGeneres to make people laugh on a daily basis, but the talk show host was sadly forced to turn serious on Thursday. For the saddest of reasons: Because her father passed away at the age of 92. Ellen broke this news to her viewers in a moving tribute to her dad, Elliott, which followed a long talk with Oprah Winfrey about the fatal mudslides in their home town. “In addition to what’s going on in Monetico, I lost my dad this week,” DeGeneres said, fighting back tears as she spoke. “He was 92 years old.  He had a good, long life. And he lived his life exactly how he wanted. He was Christian science his entire life. He never had medicine his whole life. “He never went to a doctor. We never had a vaccination. We never had medicine growing up and he lived to be 92.” Continued the comedian: “He was very proud of me. He loved this show. He was a kind man, very accepting man. “There was not one bone of judgment in his body. He was very funny … Before he passed away I got to talk to him, so I got to say goodbye to him.” We don't know the exact cause of death in this case. But the man was 92 years old. As you can see immediately above and below, Ellen also paid tribute to her father on Twitter yesterday. “It wasn't unexpected,” Ellen added on Instagram. “I was able to say goodbye. When I was a kid, my dad took us on one vacation to Warner Bros. Studios. He loved this business. He loved that I was in it. “When he died, I saw this rainbow over the stage they named for me.” Previously, Ellen has said the following to Winfrey: “So many times over the past 15 years, people have come up to me and say to me that when they're going through a tough time this show gets them through it. “Today, I need you because there's a lot going on in my life right now.” Our thoughts are with Ellen's family at this time. Watch her tribute below:

Donald Trump to Oprah: Bring… It… On!

Donald Trump has heard the same rumors as you have. And, not surprisingly, the Commander-in-Chief has something to say about them. And the Winner is? Donald Trump Click Here To Vote for Donald Oprah Winfrey Click Here To Vote for Oprah The Donald or The Big O? Vote on who would want as President! View Poll » On the heels of a rousing speech at the Golden Globe Awards on Sunday night, the Internet lit up with talk of Oprah Winfrey running for President . For real. According to various social media users, that is. After she inspired the nation with talk of female empowerment and equality, Winfrey quickly became the subject of talk among regular television viewers and experienced political pundits. Is she really considering a run for the Oval Office in 2020? Was the following speech her attempt at a stump speech? Was she thanking the Hollywood Foreign Press for bestowing upon her a major honor… or making a case that she is the most fit person to run the free world? Oprah Winfrey Delivers the Golden Globes Speech Everyone is Talking About Oprah herself has said nearly nothing about this chatter. Her close friend, though, has not dismissed the possibility. Gayle King talked the rumor on CBS This Morning Tuesday, telling viewers of her BFF: “I do think she’s intrigued by the idea. I do think that. I also know that after years of watching the Oprah show, you always have the right to change your mind. “I don’t think at this point she’s considering it. But listen, there are people who have said they want to be her campaign manager, quit their jobs and campaign for her. “She loves this country and would like to be of service in some way, but I don’t think that she’s actively considering it at this time.”  Winfrey became the first black woman to receive the Cecile B. DeMille Award at the Golden Globes. She’s as respected as any celebrity on the planet. In other words: she’s the antithesis of Donald Trump. So, would Trump be concerned about Oprah as a potential opponent in 2020? He was basically asked this question on Tuesday afternoon. “I like Oprah… I don’t think she’s gonna run,” Trump replied, adding that if she happens to toss her name in the race, well… “I’ll beat Oprah.” Of course. What else is going to say? We don’t even mean that as a typical Donald Trump diss. It’s just, what would any sitting President say about a future opponent, that he or she may defeat him or her? Way back in 1991, interestingly, Trump said he would select Oprah as his Vice President, were he ever to run for President. Fast forward decades later and he went with Mike Pence instead. Oprah, meanwhile, has admitted that Trump getting elected does make her rethink whether she would have a shot at the White House down the line. “I thought, ‘Oh gee, I don’t have the experience. I don’t know enough. I don’t…’” Winfrey told Bloomberg Television last year. “And now I’m thinking, ‘Oh. Oh.’” Oh, oh, as in: Vote for O, Vote for O? What do you think?
