Gabourey Sidibe’s mum hits out at shock jock Howard Stern

The mother of Oscar-nominated Gabourey Sidibe has hit out at shock jock Howard Stern’s criticism of her daughter’s weight. Stern poked fun at the Precious actress last week, claiming she would never land another Hollywood role because of her shape. “He can see, you can see, I can see Gabby is a big girl. She’s a big woman, so what’s wrong with that? She’s not like everyone else in the world,” said Alice Tan Ridley. “I don’t see him giving out jobs to anybody, so why should we care what he says? He might not hire her, but someone else [ Read More ] Related posts: Howard Stern backs down from Gabourey Sidibe pot shot Gabourey Sidibe compares Oscars dress to porn Gabourey Sidibe tells V magazine why she is Precious

Dennis Hopper Honored In Private Funeral

Jack Nicholson and Val Kilmer were among celebrity mourners at New Mexico service. By Gil Kaufman Dennis Hopper Photo: Ron Galella/ Wireimage Friends, family and acting colleagues gathered at San Francisco de Asis Church in Taos, New Mexico, on Wednesday to pay their final respects to legendary movie rebel Dennis Hopper . The actor, who died at age 74 on Saturday after a long battle with prostate cancer, was remembered by co-stars and friends such as Jack Nicholson at the memorial, according to The Associated Press. “It was a very singular relationship I had with him, like nobody else. We were soul mates in a way,” said Nicholson, who co-starred with Hopper in the landmark 1969 counterculture biker movie “Easy Rider,” which helped make both men stars. “I’m really missing him.” Also on hand to pay respects to the Oscar-nominated Hopper was actor Val Kilmer, who lives in nearby Pecos, New Mexico. Though Hopper had a long, distinguished career in Hollywood with films ranging from “Giant” to “True Grit,” “Apocalypse Now” and “Speed,” his funeral was described as a simple, low-key affair, down to the modest wooden coffin the actor was buried in during a private ceremony. The church’s bells chimed as Hopper’s casket was wheeled into the chapel and again when it was taken out two hours later. Mourners described the ceremony as “lovely,” “tender” and “beautiful,” noting that it did not mention Hollywood or Hopper’s public persona. The actor’s 19-year-old son, Henry Lee Hopper, spoke during the ceremony, drawing tears while reading from the Walt Whitman collection of poems, “Leaves of Grass.” “You find something that you believe in and you really realize you’ve got to fight for it. Some people fight for a minute, but there are very, very few people in this world who fight from the day they’re born to the day they go out,” Henry told the AP after the funeral. “I would say Dennis was undoubtedly one of these people.” Share your favorite memories of Dennis Hopper’s work in the comments below. Diddy Insists Joaquin Phoenix’s Rap Career Is ‘For Real’

‘If he’s not for real, he tricked me,’ says Diddy, who produced a track for Phoenix. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Photo: Universal Joaquin Phoenix is either a visionary or a madman — perhaps both? — but it’s hard to argue that thus far he’s pulled off a brilliant feat in his head-scratching transformation from Oscar-nominated actor to aspiring rapper . Because no one seems to know if he’s for real. Even after a Hollywood talent agency screened the film about his career makeover for savvy movie execs, opinions are split over whether the Casey Affleck-directed project is a documentary or a mockumentary. One man is fairly certain, though, that MC Joaquin is no joke. That man is Diddy, who produced a track the guy. “Joaquin’s for real,” he told MTV News. “Joaquin’s for real.” Seriously? Is that maybe what Diddy has to tell the press to keep up the ruse? There’s just so much evidence — the actor performing at a club in Las Vegas (and falling off the stage) and acting like crazy man on “The Late Show with David Letterman” — to suggest the whole thing is a “Borat”-style hoax. Not so, says Diddy. “If he’s not for real, he tricked me,” Diddy said. “We went into the studio, did a record, mixed a record and everything.” We have to say that’s some compelling evidence that Phoenix’s gambit is no joke. Yet the jury remains out for now. After William Morris Endeavor screened the film earlier this month, potential distributors simply didn’t know what to make of the whole thing. “Several buyers said the film overflowed with Hollywood debauchery, including more male frontal nudity than you’d find in some gay porn films and a stomach-turning sequence in which someone feuding with Phoenix defecates on the actor while he’s asleep,” reported the Los Angeles Times. Tasteful! It remains to be seen whether Phoenix’s musical career will be similarly surreal. What do you think? Is Phoenix’s rapping career a joke that Diddy is in on, or is he for real? ‘Iron Man 2’ Star Mickey Rourke On The ‘Fight’ To Be A Unique Villain

‘Everything was a little bit of a fight,’ the actor says of suggesting quirks for his character. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Mickey Rourke in “Iron Man 2” Photo: Paramount Pictures Even Mickey Rourke is a little surprised that he stars in “Iron Man 2” as a metal-toothed, tattoo-skinned villain named Ivan Vanko. First off, his career up until his casting — white hot ’80s star, then Hollywood has-been, then amateur boxer and finally Oscar-nominated actor for “The Wrestler” — is not exactly the most conventional route to a starring turn in a mainstream-genre blockbuster. But, after the first “Iron Man” grossed $585 million worldwide, Robert Downey Jr. and director Jon Favreau decided they wanted Rourke — and Rourke is exactly who they got. “Like I say, time changes people and thank God the [first] movie made a lot of money due to Robert and Favreau’s direction and insight and passion for filmmaking, so they had enough juice where they could go, ‘Oh, let’s put Mickey Rourke in the movie,’ ” the actor told MTV News. “And they fought for me to be in the movie and I’m very grateful for that.” And once Rourke got the part, he had some very specific ideas for Vanko and his electrified tendril-outfitted alter ego, Whiplash. “I said to Favreau, ‘I don’t want to make him a one-dimensional meanie, a bad guy like they do in a lot of movies,’ ” Rourke explained. Rourke had in mind the villains from old Sergio Leone Westerns played by the likes of Eli Wallach or Henry Fonda. He also wanted Vanko to have a mouthful of metallic dental work, a body covered in tattoos and a white cockatoo of whom he is quite fond. “[Favreau] had to fight for the teeth and the tattoos and the bird. Everything was a little bit of a fight,” Rourke said. “The Marvel people, who could have easily said no, said yes. They trusted Jon and Jon trusted me and Robert was very supportive.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Iron Man 2.” For breaking comic book movie news, columns and more — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com . Joaquin Phoenix Mockumentary Is Really Happening

Casey Affleck-directed film is being shopped to buyers, including Harvey Weinstein. By Eric Ditzian Joaquin Phoenix Photo: Gustavo Caballero/ Getty Images Who could forget Joaquin Phoenix’s epic unraveling on the “Late Show With David Letterman,” when the heavily bearded actor mumbled his way through one of the most awkward appearances in late-night history? Had the guy lost his marbles ? Or was this whole muttering Grizzly Adams thing an elaborate hoax? A hoax it was, and the mockumentary about Phoenix’s transition from Oscar-nominated actor to aspiring rapper is complete and being shopped around to buyers, reports Deadline.com . Directed by Casey Affleck , the film’s details are being keep under lock and key, but it will surely follow Phoenix’s many public, perplexing episodes since word of the project — publicized as a straight documentary — first cropped up in January of 2009. Those episodes included a video of the actor spitting verses at a nightclub, reportedly inking a deal with Diddy, performing at a club in Las Vegas (and falling off the stage), and supposedly posting demo tracks on MySpace. And, of course, there was the “Letterman” interview, which took such a bizarre turn that at the end of the segment, the host memorably said to Phoenix, “I’m sorry you couldn’t be here tonight.” According to the Deadline report, the mockumentary was debuted to buyers last week during a private lunchtime screening at the William Morris Endeavor talent agency. Attendees included Harvey Weinstein. A deal for the film is expected to be completed within a matter of days. There’s still no word about when the public will get a chance to see the film, but the apparent goal is to keep the mockumentary’s details a secret for as long as possible before it debuts.
