‘The Hunger Games’ May Have Its Director

‘Seabiscuit’ director Gary Ross is in talks to helm adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ dystopian young adult novel. By Amy Wilkinson Gary Ross Photo: Todd Williamson/ WireImage The director reaping is nearing an end: Gary Ross is in talks to direct the film adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ critically acclaimed young adult novel “The Hunger Games.” Lionsgate, the studio co-producing the film along with Color Force’s Nina Jacobson, is in early talks with the director, Deadline reports. Over the past few weeks, the studio has been meeting with a who’s who of directors including “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” helmer David Slade, Sam Mendes, Andrew Adamson, Rupert Sanders and Susanna White. Ross is an Oscar-nominated director and writer, known for his work on “Seabiscuit,” “Pleasantville” and the comedy “Dave.” Deadline emphasized that Ross has not been locked in, but that he is the studio’s choice, pending negotiations. “The Hunger Games” is the first installment of a trilogy focusing on 16-year-old Katniss Everdeen. Katniss lives in a dystopian version of the U.S. called Panem, which is divided into 12 districts and ruled by a capricious Capitol. To remind the districts’ citizens of their failed great rebellion, every year eavh district must send two of its children into a televised glorified death match known as the Hunger Games, where the last kid standing wins. Katniss, who has long been feeding her family by hunting with bow and arrow on the sly, volunteers to take her young sister’s place in the games. While she fights for survival, she also finds herself in a torturous love triangle and an underground movement to overthrow the government. Upon its release last month, “Mockingjay,” the third book in the trilogy, debuted at #1 on both the New York Times and the USA Today best seller lists. Collins was also named on Time ‘s 100 Most Influential People list of 2010. Along with potential helmers, much talk has surrounded the casting of the coveted lead role of Katniss. Names from Kristen Stewart to Chloe Moretz have been mentioned in connection with the project. It can be assumed that once a director is in place, casting will begin in earnest. Edward Norton Booted from The Avengers Due to Lack of "Creativity and Collaborative Spirit"

Edward Norton is an Oscar-nominated actor. But that bullet point on his resume wasn’t enough to help the star keep his most recent job, as Norton has been booted fron the upcoming big screen adaption of The Avengers . The May 2012 movie will bring together Marvel comic book heroes such as Captain America and Iron Man. It will star Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson , Samuel L. Jackson and more – but will NOT include Norton in the role of Bruce Banner. The studio explained why in this harsh statement: “We have made the decision to not bring Ed Norton back to portray the title role of Bruce Banner in the Avengers. “Our decision is definitely not one based on monetary factors, but instead rooted in the need for an actor who embodies the creativity and collaborative spirit of our other talented cast members. The Avengers demands players who thrive working as part of an ensemble… We are looking to announce a name actor who fulfills these requirements, and is passionate about the iconic role in the coming weeks.” Snaps, yo ! Replied a rep for Norton: “This offensive statement from Kevin Feige at Marvel is a purposefully misleading, inappropriate attempt to paint our client in a negative light… This seemed to us to be a financial decision but, whatever the case, it is completely their prerogative, and we accepted their decision with no hard feelings.” Norton starred in a 2008 remake of The Hulk that was panned by critics and bombed at the box office.

Joaquin Phoenix Film Could Hit Theaters In Fall

Even execs selling movie are unsure whether ‘I’m Still Here’ is true documentary or elaborate hoax. By Eric Ditzian Joaquin Phoenix Photo: Gustavo Caballero/ Getty Images In “I’m Still Here: The Lost Year of Joaquin Phoenix,” is the actor- turned-purported-rapper channeling Michael Moore or Borat? No one seems to know, which is surely part of the point and is helping to drive intrigue about the project. The public might soon have a chance to decide for themselves — documentary or mockumentary? — as the film could land in theaters as early as this fall. The Los Angeles Times reports that Magnolia Pictures is in final negotiations to acquire “I’m Still Here.” Directed by Casey Affleck, the film follows Phoenix’s transition from Oscar-nominated actor to aspiring rapper. While details are still strictly guarded, the footage surely captures Phoenix’s many perplexing episodes since early last year, including the actor performing at a club in Las Vegas (and falling off the stage) and acting like a demented Grizzly Adams on “The Late Show With David Letterman.” Sources also say that the film captures Phoenix having oral sex with a publicist, being defecated upon while sleeping and verbally abusing his assistants. All of these events remain an integral part of the film’s mystery. Not even distribution execs, who screened the film at William Morris Endeavor in May, could be sure whether the footage was for real or an elaborate hoax. Yet Diddy, who produced a track for Phoenix , remains convinced the whole thing is authentic. “Joaquin’s for real,” he told MTV News in May. “If he’s not for real, he tricked me. We went into the studio, did a record, mixed a record and everything.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .
