Tilda Swinton on We Need to Talk About Kevin, the Joys of Chaos, and What ‘Indie’ Means Today

Another year, another blisteringly grand performance from Tilda Swinton: After a run that commenced with her Oscar-winning role in Michael Clayton and continued with her underseen creative triumphs Julia and I Am Love , Swinton arrives in theaters next week as the haunted lead in We Need to Talk About Kevin. If there is any justice in the Oscar cosmos, she’ll be back in the Kodak Theater as at least a nominee come February.

Elisabetta Canalis on George Clooney Split: A Personal Failure

Elisabetta Canalis has moved on from George Clooney to Valentin Chmerkovskiy. Sort of. The Italian model, who split from the Oscar-winning hunk in June , is a contestant on this season of Dancing with the Stars and is paired up with one of the show’s new professionals. But before she Waltzes into America’s living room, Canalis is opening up about Clooney. “At the end of the day I have always seen the end of my relationships as a personal failure,” Canalis tells Italian magazine Chi . “There is nothing ever pretty is saying goodbye.” Canalis adds that she’s typically a “tomboy,” but admits to being a “doormat when it comes to love,” adding: “I’m looking for men who can give me security.” But she rarely finds it. In what can only be interpreted as a diss to the actor, Elisabetta says she has “always seen cold and controlled men as the right ones for me. You have to accept that Prince Charming who is coming to save you is not going to happen – it works against you.” The beauty, who fully supports Chaz Bono , concludes that she remains hopeful. “In the past I would self destruct when it came to love – I was immature, throwing myself into things but now times have changed, I want a relationship where you understand the other person.” [Photo: WENN.com]

REVIEW: Colin Firth’s Southern Accent the Least of Main Street’s Problems

At first glance, the formidable cast of Main Street appears to have gathered for a chance to work off the final original script from Horton Foote, the Pulitzered playwright and two-time Oscar-winning screenwriter (for 1962’s To Kill a Mockingbird and 1983’s Tender Mercies ) who passed away in 2009. But as the film creeps along with few signs of life, one begins to suspect the real reason they’re all there is to show off that most treasured item in any actor’s toolkit — the Southern accent. Main Street is an ensemble drama that functions as a display case for a range of regional drawls, from the authentic to absurd. Patricia Clarkson, playing Willa, a divorcee who’s returned to her hometown of Durham, North Carolina, easily walks away with best in show, but coming from Louisiana she’s in slightly more familiar territory than Colin Firth, who, as Gus Leroy, a representative of a toxic waste management company, is a sorely unconvincing Texan.

Ben Affleck Negotiating to Direct and Star In Line of Sight

The directorial career of Ben Affleck is officially in overdrive: The Oscar-winning screenwriter is in talks to direct and star in Line of Sight , an actioner that “centers on an elite commando squad transporting cargo while dealing with a global threat.” Transporting cargo! That old cinematic treat. Affleck is about to start work on Argo , a CIA drama set during the Iran hostage crisis. Ooh, intrigue! Delicious. I’m yelling , “Gobble, gobble” already. [ THR ]

Fox Pays Convicted ‘Barefoot Bandit’ $1.4 Million for His Story

Colton Harris-Moore — a teen who spent two years stealing airplanes, boats and cars, evading authorities, and burglarizing homes — is picking up $1.4 million in restitution money to be paid to his victims from Fox for the rights to his story (though he’ll only collect if Fox exercises its options). Known as the ‘Barefoot Bandit” because he once committed a crime without shoes, the convicted Harris-Moore is in jail awaiting trial for an October sentencing which could land him 10 years in jail. The Oscar-winning scribe Dustin Lance Black was hired to write the picture. May I suggest a title? Barefoot in the Clink ? [ Deadline ]

Errol Morris on Tabloid Truth, Media Fury and Kissing Reality Goodbye

For a guy who has spent the last three decades mapping the contours of human frailty and folly, director Errol Morris is awfully upbeat about the future. Of course, his is not just any map: It illustrates redoubts of genius ( A Brief History of Time , Mr. Death ) and islands of quirk ( Gates of Heaven , Vernon, Florida ) in vast seas of systemic failure ( The Thin Blue Line , the Oscar-winning The Fog of War , Standard Operating Procedure ). Its moral compass points mysteriously inward, challenging viewers to orient themselves accordingly. His latest film, Tabloid , exists as its own sort of hemisphere in this schema, marking milestones of crime, gossip, sex, religion, love, science and indiscretion in the jaw-dropping story of Joyce McKinney.
