Former “What’s Happening” Child Actress Danielle Spencer Diagnosed With Breast Cancer One of our favorite child stars Danielle Spencer is dealing with a difficult health diagnosis, she revealed her current battle in an interview with Black America Web: Dr. Danielle Spencer played the bratty little sister Dee on the late-’70s sitcom, ‘ What’s Happening!!’ But the now 49-year-old actress is not a sad cautionary tale like so many other child stars. After the show ended it’s 3-year run from 1975-1978, Spencer went on to Tuskeegee University where she completed a degree in veterinary science and became a veterinarian. Spencer is facing a challenge now – she has been diagnosed with breast cancer and she hopes her story will encourage other women to seek screening. But for those who love nostalgia, Spencer remains a fond memory of childhood, her famous line ‘Oooh, I’m gonna tell mama,” is one her fans still say when they run into her. But Spencer says she’s OK with that, even if some people don’t realize she’s heard it many times before. “I chuckle, because everyone thinks its original, so I have to act like it’s new every time,” she laughs. Spencer says she stopped acting to focus on school, vowing to return to acting if her career as veterinarian didn’t work out. Twenty-two years later, she’s happy with her choice. “However I do miss it every once in a while. There are a lot more show and opportunities when I was young. She says. I wish there were more representations of animal rights on TV and I”m so glad there is Animal Planet now.” Spencer says she’d love to be part of a reality show focusing on animal rights and care. But first, Spencer has her own medical challenge. She was diagnosed with breast cancer a month ago and is heading to the hospital this week to seek the best treatment option. “Surgery is definitely one of the options,” she says. “I”m trying to get as many opinions as possible but it does look that that is what I’m going to do. Hopefully after that there won’t be any chemotherapy or radiation. With everything that I’ve been through with the spinal cord injury (Spencer was in a car accident in 1977, during the show. Symptoms of spinal cord injury showed up 26 years later, eventually leaving her near-paralysis for a time) I know God is not going to give me another affliction. So I was completely shocked when the doctors told me.” Spencer had a family history of breast cancer, but says she has a lot of support and help in her life but says that good things have also happened in her life this year. One of the most significant was her induction into the Smithsonian Museum, the only child star so inducted. She will be part of the permanent exhibition of the African-American cultural museum scheduled to open in 2015. Congratulations on the Smithsonian induction! It sounds like Spencer has been through a lot but breast cancer is survivable so we hope she keeps her spirits high and continues to fight the disease. Ex-NBA Baller Jeremy Tyler Gets Restraining Order Against Baby Mama For Punching Infant Son According to TMZ reports : Ex-NBA player Jeremy Tyler — who was just released by the Lakers — claims his baby mama went berserk and punched their 10-month-old child last week … and now he’s obtained a restraining order against her. TMZ Sports has learned … the 23-year-old — who’s expected to sign a deal to play in China — filed court docs in L.A. asking for protection from Sukey Rowan … a British national who Tyler’s been with for years. In the docs, Tyler says Rowan got violent during an altercation at his mother’s house on October 18th — when she showed up to the home before she was expected to be there and demanded to see their child. “I brought [the child] outside and she swung at me and tried to hit me while I was holding our son,” Tyler says … “At one point she missed me and hit our son.” Tyler continues, “My sister tried to get between us, and she kicked my sister, who is nine months pregnant, in the stomach.” Tyler says he’s not only concerned for his safety — but worries that Rowan will take the child to the U.K. and that “I will never see him again.” Despite the allegations, Tyler says “I still love Sukey, but I cannot let my son and I live in danger because of her mental issues and violent temper.” A judge granted a temporary restraining order against Rowan — which also bars her from leaving the country with their kid. Mom Rips Out Daughter’s Hair For Not Being Able To Count A Pennsylvania, woman is in custody after authorities say she became so irate that her 6-year-old couldn’t count to 12 that she ripped a chunk of hair from her scalp. WPXI reports: A beaver county mother is facing charges after authorities said she abused her daughter by violently pulling her hair. According to the complaint, officers were first alerted to the case on Aug. 31 when hospital officials reported they were treating a 6-year-old for an injury to her head. The complaint said the injury was described as a separation of the victim’s scalp from her skull, also known as traction. This caused a void between the skull and scalp that filled with blood. “The doctors told us there was a separation of the victim from her skull,” Conway police Officer Mike Priolo said. Doctors who treated the girl told police her injuries were most consistent with violent hair pulling, as well as an impact to her left ear. Once officers interviewed the girl’s mother, identified as Brittany Ruck, the complaint states she admitted to pulling her daughter’s hair to get her attention. The complaint said the child told police that her mother wanted her to count to 12, but she couldn’t. “The little girl told us she could only count to 10 because she had 10 fingers, but she couldn’t count any higher. That’s when the mother grabbed her by her hair,” Priolo said. According to the complaint, the girl told police that on a separate occasion, her mother pulled her across the floor into a corner by a hair. “It’s just sad because she didn’t do anything wrong and she had to bear the brunt of pain,” Priolo said. Channel 11 News had learned Ruck has three children, and they’ve been placed with other family members. Move them stamps ! Ohio Man Arrested For Selling Food Stamps On Facebook A man trying to sell his girlfriend’s food stamp card on Facebook now faces a felony charge. Via Journal News reports: Police said Derron Chamberlain posted on the social media site that he was selling his girlfriend’s food stamp card for $100. He also included his phone number for potential buyers to contact him, police said. “He did put his real information while he was doing this illegal act for everybody to see,” said Middletown Police Lt. Scott Reeve. Chamberlain, 35, of Plymouth Avenue, was excited, police said, when officers from the police department’s Special Operations Unit contacted him acting as potential buyers. “He kept calling back to the detectives to a point where they thought it was humorous how much he was calling back trying to make a deal happen,” Reeve said. About six hours after detectives called Chamberlain, they met him at Goldman Park, 1400 Highland St. Police said Chamberlain did not resist arrest and is charged with trafficking food stamps, a fifth-degree felony. “He didn’t realize he had done anything wrong,” Reeve said. “Even when they brought him into the police department and talked to him he was still surprised to find out it was illegal for him to sell his girlfriend’s food stamp card.” About $6.6 million is distributed monthly in Butler County via the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, commonly known as food stamps. While benefits fraud is not a new crime, the lingering dismal economy and drug abuse, particularly heroin, has turned it into an epidemic, Butler County Sheriff Richard K. Jones told the Journal-News in January. The U.S. Department of Agriculture has said that food stamp fraud totals $750 million each year. An investigation launched from suspicion that Butler County’s skyrocketing food assistance dollars may be attributed in part to fraud, abuse and misuse has resulted in the arrest of hundreds and a taxpayer savings of $5.2 million since July 2012, the Journal-News reported earlier this year. The operation, manned by two Butler County sheriff’s detectives with help of state and federal agencies including the Secret Service and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, netted 116 violators between July 2012 and June 2013 and 100 from July to December 2013. Black Men Are Less Likely To Graduate From A Four-Year College Via Black Journal reports: The federal government should require all colleges to create early-alert systems that flag students with low test scores, missing assignments, or spotty attendance. That would be one way, according to a report released on Tuesday, to curb the alarming number of minority men who drop out of college . The report, “ Advancing the Success of Boys and Men of Color in Education ,” is the result of brainstorming by diversity researchers at seven higher-education institutions. It is aimed at building on the momentum of My Brother’s Keeper, the Obama administration’s effort to improve education and career outcomes for young minority men. Black men lag behind their peers in other races when it comes to graduating from both two- and four-year colleges, according to federal statistics that track their completion through 2009 and 2012, respectively. Only a third of black male students graduated from four-year colleges within six years, compared with 45 percent of Hispanic men, 57 percent of white men, and 64 percent of Asian men. For two-year colleges, the percentages who received a certificate or degree or who transferred to a four-year college over six years were 32 for black, 30 for Latino, 40 for white, and 43 for Asian men. But minority men aren’t the only ones who would benefit from the changes the group is proposing. “We tried to provide recommendations that get at issues for boys and men of color but also address equity gaps for other disadvantaged groups,” J. Luke Wood, co-director of the Minority Male Community College Collaborative at San Diego State University, said in an interview. His center was joined in the report by similar groups at Morehouse College, Ohio State University, the University of California at Los Angeles, the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Texas at Austin, and the University of Wisconsin at Madison. Ma’am … Woman Gives IV To Drunk Teen A woman who held an underage drinking party at her home is under fire for not only providing alcohol to minors, but for giving a child who passed out from possible alcohol poisoning an IV. Pix 11 reports: After a teenager became so drunk she threw up and passed out, an adult at the home where she was partying allegedly gave her an IV and stuck her in the shower instead of calling an ambulance, police in Idaho said. That adult is now charged with two counts felony injury to a child, according to the Ada County Sheriff’s Department in Boise. Jennifer A. Phippen, 37, was arrested Sept. 5 for allegedly providing alcohol to the 14-year-old girl and other teens, and for allegedly not getting the girl appropriate medical attention for what Phippen suspected was alcohol poisoning. The teen was at a birthday party Aug. 24 at Phippen’s home with several friends, some of whom were drinking alcohol, authorities said. A few of the kids told Phippen that the unidenitifed teen drank several shots, passed out and vomited, sheriff’s officials said. That’s when Phippen gave the girl about 400 to 500 ccs of fluid through an IV and put her in the shower “in an attempt to rouse her,” instead of calling paramedics or the girl’s parents. When the teen regained enough consciousness later that morning, she walked home, the sheriff’s department said. If convicted of felony injury to a child, Phippen could face up to 10 years in prison.
