The new Agricultural Outlook 2010-2019 report from the UN Food and Agriculture Organization has been released, warning that the price for many staple food products are projected to rise between 15-45%, adjusted for inflation. Saturday Night Funnies: Boxer Says CO2 Leading Cause of Conflict Next 20 Years

On Thursday, Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) took to the floor of the Senate and claimed that carbon dioxide — that naturally occurring gas integral to life on this planet! — “will be over the next 20 years the leading cause of conflict, putting our troops in harm’s way” (transcript and commentary follow): I’m going to put in the record, Madam President, a host of quotes from our national security experts who tell us that carbon pollution leading to climate change will be over the next 20 years the leading cause of conflict, putting our troops in harm’s way. And that’s why we have so many returning veterans who want us to move forward and address this issue, so we can create those new technologies that get us off this foreign oil.  As bonus coverage, here’s how this Senator treats higher-ups in the military:

Polar Bears Will Be Extinct in Western Hudson Bay by 2040

photo: James Seith Photography via flickr Back in 2004 there were only about 936 polar bears in the Western Hudson Bay part of Manitoba. Now researchers say that the increasing length of the ice-free season in the region means that a tipping point will soon be reached, which means the polar bears will decline over the next 30 years to a point where too few remain to sustain a viable breeding population. … Read the full story on TreeHugger

The Colbert Report

Hey everyone! What a crazy four weeks. I love hearing from so many of you via Twitter and I appreciate the kind words of encouragement everyone keeps sending to the site. They all mean so much to me especially while traveling which is all I seem to ever do these days. I had a great time on The Colbert Report last night (picture from their green room is to the right). I was super nervous because I wasn’t quite sure how Stephen’s “character” would behave, but it turned out to be both exhillerating and fun. I even got some shout outs to CC Skye and my friend Val from California. Special thanks to Stephen and his entire staff. They really made me feel so welcome and I appreciate everything they did. I’m always a little surprised to see what the media (and the blogosphere) latch onto after I write an article for The Daily Beast or make an appearance on a show like Colbert. Of course, the current frenzy seems to be all over my “pro-sex” comments a few weeks ago on the Beast. Obviously, the most sensational part of anything is what sells, But I am very happy that these things always bring new viewers and readers into what I’m working on. That’s evidenced by the feedback I get. I’m always encouraged by the positive comments from so many about changing what it means to be a Republican by simply speaking out. Some of you know it can be tough because there’s lots of people who are ready to criticize that message, but I know anything worth fighting for isn’t easy. Thanks always for your support. I’ll be finally getting settled in New York City over the next few weeks and will have more interesting things to report on. In the meantime, enjoy the holiday weekend and hooray for summer! Jimmy Fallon Brings You the Soundtrack for Memorial Day

Despite evidence to the contrary, this isn’t Jimmy Fallon Week here at Movieline, though you’d be forgiven for thinking it was. After all, between the nightly running commentary he’s been doing online and his appearance at the Paley Center , it’s been all Jimmy, all the time. And really, why not? The Late Night host seems preternaturally able to create bits and jokes that permeate the zeitgeist. The latest that’s sure to qualify? A hand-clapping, sing-along called “Balls in Your Mouth.” Tar balls. Because finding new and original ways to satirize the environmental catastrophe caused by BP has become the coin of the realm for late night hosts. After the jump, listen to the song — however be forewarned: You’ll be singing this earworm at every barbecue you attend over the next three days.

Kristin Cavallari bikini photos

Kristin Cavallari got in on the action at Aria Resort on Saturday. Expect to see a lot of these types of pictures over the next few months. You could say I feel about them the same way they feel about young Asian boys. The Hills star Kristin Cavallari has reportedly laughed off her on-screen persona. Feds Indict Former Blackwater President, 4 Others

The former president of Blackwater Worldwide was charged Friday with using straw purchases to stockpile automatic weapons at the security firm and filing false documents to cover up gifts given to the king of Jordan. Gary Jackson, 52, who left the company last year in a management shake-up, was charged along with four of his former colleagues, according to the federal indictment. The prosecution opens a new front of the government's oversight of the sullied security company. Several of the company's contractors have previously been charged with federal crimes for their actions in war zones, but the company's executives have thus far weathered a range of investigations. Blackwater has been trying to rehabilitate its image since a 2007 shooting in Baghdad that left 17 people dead, outraged the Iraqi government and led to a federal charges against several Blackwater guards — accusations later thrown out of court after a judge found prosecutors mishandled evidence. Around the time that Jackson left the company, Blackwater changed its name to Xe Services. The charges against Jackson include a conspiracy to violate firearms laws, false statements, possession of a machine gun and possession of an unregistered firearm. Also indicted were former Blackwater general counsel Andrew Howell, 44; former executive vice president Bill Mathews, 44; former procurement vice president Ana Bundy, 45; and former weapons manager Ronald Slezak, 65. The case stems in part from a raid conducted by federal agents at the company's headquarters in Moyock in 2008 that seized 22 weapons, including 17 AK-47s. Blackwater officials enticed the local sheriff's office to pose as the purchaser of 34 automatic weapons that would be stored on the company's campus, something prosecutors called a straw purchase, according to the indictment. The Camden County Sheriff's Office provided blank letterhead to the company, which then used the stationery to prepare letters ordering weapons. Iceland’s Volcano Ash from Space: Raw Video

The Norwegian meteorological office on Friday (April 16) published a prediction of how the ash cloud from the Icelandic volcano eruption is likely to spread over the next few days. The prediction is until Sunday (April 18) evening and it shows the cloud moving further south and south-east. According to their website, the prediction supposes that the volcano emissions are continuous throughout this period. The yellow parts show ash that has fallen by itself, the red parts show ash that has fallen due to rain and the black fields show the ash cloud “as it is now”. The huge ash cloud from the Icelandic volcano has caused air travel chaos across Europe, leaving hundreds of thousands of passengers stranded. About 17,000 flights were expected to be cancelled on Friday due to the dangers posed by clouds of volcanic ash from Iceland, aviation officials said, with airports in Britain, France, Germany, and across Europe closed until at least Saturday. added by: ctv
