Get ready for some twee twinkling on the Croisette — Wes Anderson ‘s Moonrise Kingdom is set to open the 2012 Cannes Film Festival! Last year’s opener, Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris , went on to enjoy a rousingly successful theatrical run on its way to a Best Picture nomination; Anderson’s comedy, about a pair of pre-teen lovebirds on the lam in 1960s New England, will open stateside just over a week after its May 16 Cannes debut and marks his return to live-action film after his most recent film, the Oscar-nominated Fantastic Mr. Fox . In a statement announcing the premiere, Cannes head Thierry Frémaux referenced Fellini and Renoir while calling Anderson a ‘ brilliant and inventive filmmaker ‘; not too shabby for a guy who most recently followed in the footsteps of some of cinema’s brightest directors by helming a pair of car commercials for Hyundai ! (Said ads are classic Anderson, though, through and through — can’t quite say the same for this week’s other ad director-for-hire, Darren Aronofsky .) Powerhouse vocalist, Melody Thornton is finding her way back to the spotlight, but on her own terms. After dropping traces of what will form her upcoming mixtape, which up until this point has been cryptically titled, P.O.Y.B.L, an ancroynm for “Piss On Your Black List”…. she is now ready to bare all. “Piss On Your Black List has nothing to do with being a rebel or fighting against anything. It has everything to do with fighting for myself,” says Thornton. “It’s clever with attitude. It’s kind of funny and gets a strong reaction; all things that, at times, describe my art.” The mixtape consists of 10 tracks which do just that. Through various melodic stories of love, music, and faith, Melody exposes the battles she faces with each, and at times, she even reveals the battle within herself. Those rumors of an Evelyn and Chad show are now reality! Variety is reporting that the executive producer of “Basketball Wives” will be continuing in his duties with the franchise AND working as EP for Evelyn and Chad’s new show: Shed Media U.S. has signed Sean Rankine to a new deal to continue as showrunner of VH1′s “Basketball Wives” franchise. Rankine exec produces Miami-set “Basketball Wives” and “Basketball Wives Los Angeles,” as well as upcoming new unscripted series “Ocho & Ev,” featuring Chad Ochocinco and Evelyn Lozada. Rankine operates “with grace under a lot of pressure,” Shed Media prexy Nick Emmerson said, and has worked well on “Basketball Wives” in coordination with Shed senior veep Alex Demyanenko. “They together managed to sort of get the women to really trust the team, trust the producers and basically open up to allow their lives, warts and all, to be on screen,” Emmerson told Variety. “Day in, day out, night in, night out … (Rankine) is there, gaining their trust, carving out storylines.” February’s fourth-season premiere of “Basketball Wives” drew 2.5 million overall viewers, a nearly 40% increase over its May 2011 season-three launch. “Sean has been absolutely instrumental in guiding this hit franchise for us,” VH1 programming and production exec veep Jeff Olde said. “He is an incredible storyteller and apparently also an insomniac, and we are so grateful for both.” Rankine’s other exec producer credits include “The Kristoffer Winters Project” for Bravo and “Saddle Ranch” for VH1.
