A Lil Positivity: Google Doodle Celebrates Civil Rights Leader Dr. Dorothy Irene Height’s 102nd Birthday

Google pays homage to an African-American icon. Google Honors Civil Rights Leader Dorothy Irene Height We’re glad Google chose to put a spotlight on this amazing woman. According to The Huffington Post: In this search-engine dominated era of the internet, and more often than we might like to admit, people have come to expect and count on the Google homepage to remind us of holidays worth celebrating. Today, the Google logo on the U.S. site recognizes civil rights giant and American heroine Dr. Dorothy Irene Height. Were she still with us today, this Virginia-born leader would be 102 years old. Height may be excluded from the short list of widely acclaimed names of the Civil Rights Movement — Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, Rosa Parks, John Lewis — but she, admired greatly by all those listed above, is a name that should be in every American History class textbook. She not only experienced but contributed to the remarkable transformation of the country from her birth in 1912 — a year with at least 61 lynchings of African Americans on record, to her death in 2010 during a term of the first black President of the United States. In addition to her indispensable contributions to the cause of ending racial discrimination, Dr. Height was known for her dedication to women’s rights and support of the LGBTQ community. She was president of the National Council of Negro Women for over forty years, and recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom (1994) as well as the Congressional Gold Medal (2004). We lost this late, great leader of social change on April 20th, 2010 at the age of 98. Departed she may be, but forgotten she is not. Hopefully, Google showing Dr. Height some love will inspire more people to educate themselves about her story and sacrifice. Image via Google

Black History: First Black Woman Arrested For Refusing To Give Up Her Seat Claimed Her Dark Skin Kept Her From Getting “Rosa Parks” Recognition

Did you know? First Black Woman Arrested For Giving Up Her Seat Speaks Out Did you know that the actual first black female arrested for refusing to give up her seat to a white person was a 15-year-old girl by the name of Claudette Colvin? NPR gathered a few facts on her story a few years back and among other reasons, she said she believes her dark skin played a part in her lack of recognition for the brave act. Take a look below. via NPR Few people know the story of Claudette Colvin: When she was 15, she refused to move to the back of the bus and give up her seat to a white person — nine months before Rosa Parks did the very same thing. Most people know about Parks and the Montgomery, Ala., bus boycott that began in 1955, but few know that there were a number of women who refused to give up their seats on the same bus system. Most of the women were quietly fined, and no one heard much more. Colvin was the first to really challenge the law. Now a 69-year-old retiree, Colvin lives in the Bronx. She remembers taking the bus home from high school on March 2, 1955, as clear as if it were yesterday. The bus driver ordered her to get up and she refused, saying she’d paid her fare and it was her constitutional right. Two police officers put her in handcuffs and arrested her. Her school books went flying off her lap. “All I remember is that I was not going to walk off the bus voluntarily,” Colvin says. In addition to sharing her story, Ms. Colvin also opened up about why she feels her story didn’t receive more recognition. One of the widely-speculated reasons not mentioned in this article was that she was pregnant at the time. There are many reasons why Claudette Colvin has been pretty much forgotten. She hardly ever told her story when she moved to New York City. In her new community, hardly anyone was talking about integration; instead, most people were talking about black enterprises, black power and Malcolm X. When asked why she is little known and why everyone thinks only of Rosa Parks, Colvin says the NAACP and all the other black organizations felt Parks would be a good icon because “she was an adult. They didn’t think teenagers would be reliable.” She also says Parks had the right hair and the right look. “Her skin texture was the kind that people associate with the middle class,” says Colvin. “She fit that profile.” Were you in the know about this little known black history fact ? Apollo Nida: Charged with Bank Fraud and Identity Theft!

The Real Housewives of Atlanta star Apollo Nida, Phaedra Parks’ husband, has reportedly been charged by federal officials with bank fraud and identity theft. Nida was named in a criminal complaint last Tuesday after an investigation by the U.S. District Attorney’s office, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution . The paper reports that Nida created fake companies and then used access to credit reporting databases to locate individuals whose names he used. His alleged goal? To fraudulently open bank accounts and obtain loans. If you watch The Real Housewives of Atlanta online , you know Nida’s reputation. This isn’t the first time he’s been in trouble with the law, to say the least. He is said to have served prison time from 2004-09 for auto title fraud. Phaedra Parks , an entertainment attorney and Real Housewives cast member, wed Apollo Nida in 2009, after his release. They have two sons, Ayden and Dylan. Wonder what she has to say about this particular legal fiasco … Nida was apparently named by the original target of the investigation, Gayla St. Julien, who was arrested in September on similar criminal counts. She confessed all the details of their joint operation, including the fact that Nida would steal people’s IDs and have St. Julien open accounts as them. While in custody, federal officials say St. Julien “described herself as Nida’s right hand b—h in executing the legwork of his fraud schemes.” Guess this right hand b—h copped a plea deal.

Jesse Jackson: Phil Robertson More Offensive Than Rosa Parks’ Bus Driver

Jesse Jackson has opted to weigh in on Phil Robertson and his inflammatory comments, calling the Duck Dynasty star worse than Rosa Parks’ bus driver. While Robertson’s anti-gay comments in GQ got him suspended by A&E and ignited a national controversy, he made other eyebrow-raising statements as well. Specifically, he said the Nazis needed Jesus, and opined that African-Americans were happier and not mistreated in pre-civil rights era Louisiana. Collectively, the interview spurred Jackson into action. “These statements uttered by Robertson are more offensive than the bus driver in Montgomery, Alabama, more than 59 years ago,” Jackson told ABC News. Why does he think Robertson’s comments are worse? “At least the bus driver, who ordered Rosa Parks to surrender her seat to a white person, was following state law,” said the 72-year-old minister. “Robertson’s statements were uttered freely and openly without cover of the law, within a context of what he seemed to believe was ‘white privilege.'” Jackson, his Rainbow PUSH Coalition and GLAAD want to meet with A&E execs, along with Cracker Barrel’s CEO, to discuss the future of the show. He wants to meet within 72 hours with A&E and Cracker Barrel, a major Duck Dynasty sponsor, to urge the network to uphold Robertson’s suspension. Jackson and GLAAD said that they believe it’s not right for a personality with such a large platform to benefit from such comments or to go unpunished. Phil Robertson: Not Sorry For Anti-Gay Comments Don’t look for an apology, however, from the religious Robertson. Sunday, he defended himself and comments about gays being sinners to his Bible study group in West Monroe, La., while hitting back at his critics. “I will not give or back off from my path,” he reportedly said. Robertson added that his GQ comments were quotes from the Bible. “I didn’t think much of it at all, but it seems a lot of other people did,” he said. Do you agree with the suspension of Robertson?   Yes, obviously. He was way over the line. Maybe. I can see why A&E decided to. No way. He’s just stating his opinions, people! View Poll »
