Katie Stevens Did What Was ‘Best For Me’ On ‘American Idol’

‘They all know what they’re talking about, but ultimately, I need to do what I love,’ she says of the judges. By Katie Byrne Katie Stevens on “American Idol” Photo: Frank Micelotta/ Getty Images After some iffy performances in the “American Idol” semifinals, many fans questioned Katie Stevens making the top 12 over other female contestants like Lilly Scott and Katelyn Epperly. Well, the 17-year-old was out to prove those critics wrong in the finals with her powerful performances of the Rolling Stones’ “Wild Horses” and the Beatles’ “Let It Be.” But Simon Cowell lambasted Katie’s take on Elvis’ “Baby What You Want Me to Do” for being too loud and “annoying,” and she was sent packing, along with Andrew Garcia , on Wednesday night. We caught up with the high-schooler on Thursday (April 15) to find out what she thought of Kara and Simon’s back-and-forth about what kind of artist she was and much more. Q : Simon and Kara had a real tug-of-war going on, fighting over whether you should sing country or pop/R&B. What was it like being stuck in the middle of that? A : I think where I went at fault at the beginning of the competition, during top 24, was when I was trying to please the judges and I wasn’t pleasing myself and doing what I loved. I decided going into top 12 that I was just going to be myself. So everything that I did at that point was what I loved to do. I think that kind of showed, so the judges started giving me better comments. And Simon telling me he thought I was country — I mean, they all know what they’re talking about, but ultimately, I need to do what I love and do what I feel is best for me. And I kind of side more with Kara and the pop with R&B leanings. In an album, I would like to record things like Kelly Clarkson, where she has the soulful voice with kind of pop/R&B and a rock background. I hope to record that kind of album soon! Q : What was the most difficult aspect of being on “Idol”? A : Each contestant, we’d go out there, and we’d try to do our best each week, and it’s very hard knowing that you’re going to be judged afterward, because you don’t know what to expect. You don’t know if they’re going to give you good comments or bad comments, so you just try to manage your nerves as best you can. The singing part was probably easiest, but it was nerve-racking to go into the judging part of it. So definitely the judging was most difficult for me. Q : You mentioned that your dad had such a hard time with the results shows that he skipped them altogether. What was your parents’ reaction when you were eliminated this week? A : They have been behind me since I started to sing when I was little. Obviously, they saw that I was upset, but my mom even said to me yesterday … “You know what, Katie? If you started out and you were at the stadium, and they told you, ‘OK, Katie, we’re gonna let you be on the show, but you’re only gonna make it to the eighth spot,’ would you have done it?” And I said, “Absolutely.” So they basically told me how proud they were of me and how I should have no regrets about anything, and I don’t. I have no regrets, and I’m so proud of myself that I was able to have strength enough to go through this at my age. I’m very proud of everything I’ve accomplished. Q : After Michael Lynche was given a second chance , were you disappointed or relieved that the judges’ save wasn’t on the table for you this week? A : I love Big Mike. And I was so happy that he got saved and all of us contestants were able to spend another week with him. I mean, it was weird, because I had this feeling that it was gonna be me when I was standing next to him. And I’m so proud of him and all the other contestants. And I was privileged to be able to spend time with them and work with all of them. I was definitely happy to be able to sing at the end. Obviously, it’s a little emotional, but I tried as best I could, and that wasn’t the last time that America’s gonna see me. Just gotta keep that in mind. Q : What was the best piece of advice Adam Lambert gave you as a mentor ? A : He told me to always stick to what I love and what I believe in. It was great to have him as a mentor, because he’s been through the “Idol” process. So he was able to give us feedback on what he did and how he was able to evolve throughout all the pressures and everything. And it really helped us try to home in on that and do the best that we can. Were you sad to see Katie go? Are you excited to hear her post-“Idol” music? Let us know in the comments below! Andrew Garcia Says ‘American Idol’ Judges Were ‘Really Hard’ This Year

‘Idol’ castoff also insists he’s not boring: ‘If they hung out with me, they’ll love me.’ By Katie Byrne Andrew Garcia on “American Idol” Photo: Frank Micelotta/ Getty Images Andrew Garcia just couldn’t get past his Hollywood Week performance of … do we even need to remind you which song by a former “American Idol” judge he covered? His uninspired performance of Elvis’ “Hound Dog” was the last straw, and he was sent packing , along with Katie Stevens, during Wednesday’s results show. We caught up with the acoustic crooner on Thursday (April 15) to talk about his “Straight Up” albatross, his bromance with Lee Dewyze and much more. Q : You had a lot of hype going into the semifinals after your take on Paula Abdul’s “Straight Up.” Do you think your early fans were disappointed with the direction you went once the live shows started? A : I felt super excited coming into the top 24, and I don’t feel like I let my fans down at all. My fans are just so amazing, and they get me, and that’s all that matters. I know I didn’t let them down, and they know I didn’t let them down. Q : After weeks of bad reviews, were you surprised that the judges loved your take on Chris Brown’s “Forever” during R&B week ? A : I kind of knew it was gonna be a good night, just because I’m a guy who does current music and puts my acoustic twist on it. And I saw that song, and I was like, “Man, I gotta do something with that song. It’s current and my feel too.” I’m a kind of R&B/pop kind of guy. I put my twist on it, and I felt it 100 percent. I was just like, “You know what? I know the fans and supporters are gonna love it.” And I went out there, confident, and it showed. And [the judges] loved it. Q : Simon often got on your case for being boring, and mentor Adam Lambert even said you needed to liven things up. Why do you think your personality didn’t translate into your performances? A : Well, onstage, I was focused more on just performing. They’re talking about personality; they don’t really hang out with me, so they can’t really talk about someone’s personality if they’re not trying to hang out with me. If they hung out with me, they’ll love me. Guarantee. Q : After Michael Lynche was given a second chance , were you disappointed or relieved that the judges’ save wasn’t on the table for you this week? A : At that point, I was just happy with where I was at and how far I’d gotten. And the save, they couldn’t have did a better save. Michael Lynche, that guy is a warrior, and I love that guy. Q : Do you think this year’s judging panel was harder on the contestants than last year’s? A : I felt like it was harder, just ’cause they were being really hard this year. I don’t know why, but they’re being really, really, really hard on the judging. Q : Ryan Seacrest was especially wacky this week, even slow dancing in the aisle during Tim Urban’s performance. What were you thinking when you saw his behavior? A : I was like, “Ryan has lost his mind.” But I love the guy. He works a lot, so he has the right to get a little coffee in him now and then. Q : What brought you and Lee together as friends? A : We find ourselves doing the same thing at the same time, and it’s just really weird. Like, “What the heck?” We look at each other, and we’re like, “Dude, we’re meant to be!” Q : Will you be rooting for Lee at future shows? A : I will for sure go to the shows and cheer him on. That’s my brother for life. Were you sad to see Andrew go? Are you excited to hear his post-“Idol” music? Let us know in the comments below! Madonna Gives Props To ‘Glee’ Episode

Material Girl thinks one character in particular is ‘very cute.’ By Jocelyn Vena Madonna Photo: James Devaney/ WireImage Not only is Madonna excited to have her songs used in next week’s “Power of Madonna” episode of “Glee,” she is also apparently hot for teacher. “I think Mr. Schuester is very cute,” Madonna said in a statement, referring to Matthew Morrison, who plays the glee-club instructor on the hit Fox show. “And I’m glad he’s doing such a good job empowering all the girls.” In the episode, according to Fox, Mr. Schuester assigns the kids to sing Madonna songs because he thinks the girls have been mistreated by the boys. He wants them all to benefit from the girl-power messages in tracks like “Express Yourself.” “Like a Prayer,” “Like a Virgin” and “4 Minutes” are also covered in the episode. Following this Tuesday’s spring premiere of “Glee,” Fox aired a shot-by-shot reenactment of Madge’s iconic “Vogue” clip, starring Sue Sylvester (played by Jane Lynch), Mercedes (Amber Riley) and Kurt (Chris Colfer). Lynch told MTV News about how empowering she found it to cover Madonna. “Oh, yeah, the cone bra, the Gaultier bra, I wear that in one scene. And it’s the most powerful I’ve ever felt in my life,” she dished. “Well, you know what, I wore the cone bra with the track suit, so it worked. It was a win, win.” Which song are you most looking forward to seeing in the “Glee” Madonna episode? Tell us in the comments! Related Videos It’s The Return Of ‘Glee’! ‘Glee’ ‘s Sue Sylvester Dons Madonna Cone Bra For ‘Vogue’

‘It’s the most powerful I’ve ever felt in my life,’ Jane Lynch says of wearing iconic look. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Audrey Kim Jane Lynch in the “Glee” re-creation of Madonna’s “Vogue” music video Photo: FOX The “Glee” club is taking next week’s “The Power of Madonna” episode (airing April 20) very seriously. Not only are they performing songs like “Vogue,” but they also made their own shot-by-shot re-creation of the iconic video , starring Cheerios Coach Sue Sylvester, which premiered online on Tuesday night. “I do the ‘Vogue’ video in the Madonna episode, and we replicated everything down to the set pieces, the hair pieces, the wardrobe, the lighting,” Jane Lynch revealed to MTV News earlier this week at the party for the “Glee” spring premiere . “It’s in black and white, and you’re gonna love it. It’s amazing.” And while it is surprising to see Sue Sylvester in anything but her signature track suit, she found a way to make sure she gets the best of both worlds elsewhere in the episode. “Oh, yeah, the cone bra, the Gaultier bra, I wear that in one scene. And it’s the most powerful I’ve ever felt in my life,” she dished. “Well, you know what, I wore the cone bra with the track suit, so it worked. It was a win, win.” Not only will Lynch be channeling her inner Madge, she promises that she’ll also be just as scary as ever for the rest of the season. “She terrorizes everybody, still. She gets inappropriate with a bunch of guys. There’s a lot of sexual blackmail,” she explained. “She does a little singing with Olivia Newton John. She gets put in her place in a very interesting, cruel ways by Mr. Will Schuester himself. He gets kind of rough with her, and he really hurts her feelings.” What do you think of Sue Sylvester’s Madonna impression? Tell us in the comments! Related Videos It’s The Return Of ‘Glee’! ‘Glee’ Cast Goes (Lady) Gaga At Spring Premiere Party

‘I can tell you I am not going to be wearing the crime scene tape,’ Cory Monteith joked about ‘Glee’ Lady Gaga episode. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Audrey Kim Dianna Agron and Cory Monteith at the “Glee” spring premiere Photo: Frank Micelotta/ Getty Images While fans are raving about the season premiere of “Glee” and the cast have even hinted at some relationship shakeups this time around, it was the upcoming Lady Gaga episode that had the cast talking at Monday’s premiere party in Los Angeles. “Her music and her influence on pop music right now, it’s so well expressed by ‘Glee.’ The way that that episode goes with Lady Gaga’s music is amazing,” actor Cory Monteith shared with MTV News. “We’re just in the midst of filming it right now and I can’t wait for you to see it. I can tell you I am not going to be wearing the crime scene tape.” Cast member Amber Riley revealed that the dancing will be pretty sweet in the episode. “We just did Gaga today,” she said. “We did one of the dance numbers today and I had so much fun. I didn’t want it to end.” Chris Colfer tweeted about getting the chance to wear Gaga’s signature sky-high heels, and pics of him dressed in a dress similar to the one that she wore in her “Bad Romance” video appeared on PerezHilton.com . He admits he’s lucky he didn’t get seriously injured. “Quite a process today dancing our Lady Gaga number in the 10-inch heels. But thankfully I didn’t injure myself, which is really surprising since I injure myself, like, standing up in rehearsals,” he joked. “So I’m very thankful I didn’t have to go to the ER again.” And Colfer wasn’t the only fellow who had trouble imitating Gaga. Kevin McHale explained, “The guys do their thing. Not all the guys can pull of Gaga. I can’t give anything away. We were filming some of the Gaga episode earlier today. It’s insane and the outfits are incredible and almost exactly true to the real Gaga outfits. I can’t wait for people to see it.” Co-star Naya Rivera summed up the Gaga episode this way: “Best episode we’ve ever shot, in my opinion,” she raved. “I’ve had so much fun. Our outfits are nuts. It’s so fun and the songs are so great. We all look great.” Are you looking forward to the Lady Gaga “Glee” episode? Tell us in the comments! Kate Beckinsale Has Seen Better Days

I wasn’t sure about this look Kate Beckinsale was sporting at the Conde Nast Traveler Hot List Party the other night, I was beginning to think she was losing some of her MILF status, but then I spent about eleven minutes studying them in the bathroom and I’ve changed my mind. Now I’m just a little sleepy. Who am I kidding? Kate’s been the queen MILF for a long time now and doesn’t seem to be letting up, and as my queen I would do anything to please her…. Anything. Call me.
