Trey Songz Showcases His Rap Jones

With #LemmeHolDat 2, Trey Songz proves his rap worth, in Mixtape Daily. By Rob Markman Trey Songz Photo: MTV News Mixtape Daily Main Pick Artist : Trey Songz Mixtape : #LemmeHolDatBeat 2 Real Spit : Trey Songz has been walking with a rapper’s swag ever since his 2005 debut I Gotta Make It so when the Virginia vocalist dropped his hip-hop mixtape #LemmeHolDatBeat in 2010, it didn’t come as a surprise. This past November when Trigga Trey returned with his second rap mixtape, #LemmeHolDatBeat2 , he made it clear that he takes his bars seriously. The DJ Drama-helmed tape begins with Songz paying homage to hip-hop’s fallen over “Jackin’ for Beats.” Over the course of three minutes and 41 seconds, Trey raps over a medley of beats popularized by the Notorious B.I.G., Tupac and Big Pun. The “Jackin’ “concept was made famous by Ice Cube in 1990 on his Kill at Will EP. To prove his rap worth, Trigga glides over Biggie’s “Sky’s the Limit,” Eazy-E’s “Boyz-n-the Hood,” Big L’s “Put It On,” Pun’s “Still Not a Player” and ‘Pac’s “I Get Around.” On “She Will,” Trey borrows Lil Wayne’s instrumental of the same name and then invites Weezy to guest on “Don’t Love Me.” Of course Tunechi is the draw on the track’s final verse, but Songz holds his own spitting clever lines like “Shorty runnin’ game, so I never had to coach her.” Trey’s strong suit is obviously his R&B vocals, but make no mistake: He can rap pretty damn well — better than some rappers. On “BeatNutz” he tackles the Beatnuts 2001 underground favorite “No Escapin’ This,” delivering playful bars like, “It’s the incredible, rappers are edible/ No matter what I ever do, hate is what I never do.” Next up is Trey’s 2012 album Chapter 5, and while he has collaborated with rappers like Twista, Nicki Minaj and Drake in the past, maybe this time he’ll save a sixteen for himself. Lady Gaga Reveals Favorite ‘Marry The Night’ Scenes

‘The entire story’s true, and it’s through the lens of how I choose to repaint my past,’ she tells MTV News. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Matt Elias Lady Gaga performing “Marry the Night” at the 102.7 KIIS FM’s Jingle Ball Photo: Joe Scarnici/ WireImage Lady Gaga’s “Marry the Night” video debuted last week to all the pomp and circumstance you’d expect from the Mother Monster. After several teases, the nearly 14-minute-long video was an insider’s look at the struggles Gaga went through before she hit it big. Based on her experience of being dropped by Island/Def Jam before getting picked up by Interscope Records, the pop superstar uses some creative license in the clip to share with fans the life-changing experience. “This was one of the first times that the fashion didn’t propel so much of the story line,” she told MTV News at Los Angeles’ Jingle Ball concert of the self-directed video. “It is autobiographical, so the entire story’s true, and it’s through the lens of how I choose to repaint my past.” While many of the Grammy nominee’s past videos have been focused on the visuals — especially what she’s wearing — Gaga said “Marry the Night” was a whole different monster. “Even though the fashion’s important, for the first time, it didn’t dictate every single moment,” she said. “The aesthetic was more driven by the emotion of the song and the feeling of New York City. It was more cinema, art-house inspired.” While there’s many memorable scenes and looks in the video (including a mental breakdown in which she smashes Cheerios on her naked body, some “Fame”-inspired dance routines in spandex and, of course, a mental-hospital scene that features a very stylish hospital gown), Gaga explained what she loves the most in the video. “I do really love the ballet sequence,” she said. “The Noritake shoes with the latex ballet outfit, the sort-of broken ballet moment I thought was really beautiful.” While her BeDazzler never makes a cameo in the video, a reference to it and an outfit that is blinged out with sequins remains an equally unforgettable scene. As Gaga is trying to reinvent herself after she is told to give up on ballet, she heads to dance rehearsals wearing her Madonna “Who’s That Girl” finest (denim completely covered in sequins) on her way to pop superstardom. Gaga used to BeDazzle her clothes pre-fame, but now, more famous people BeDazzle for her. “I used to use glue as well, just straight Gem-Tac glue with rhinestones,” she said. “But, for example, that outfit was a costume made my Versace. But back in the day, I had just wreaked some havoc on old denim.” What do you think of Gaga’s “Marry the Night” fashion? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Lady Gaga

Stone Mountain native Childish Gambino aka Donald Glover is riding high. His latest album “Camp” is getting rave reviews, as well as his Comedy Central standup special “Weirdo” which aired this past weekend.  While Glover has no problem racking up fans with his rapping and comedic skills, there was one line mainstream America wouldn’t let him cross.  When Sony Pictures decided to reboot the Spider-Man film franchise, Glover’s name was thrown in the ring as a possible casting choice for Peter Parker. Unfortunately, things got real ugly when Glover started receiving hateful comments across the blogosphere. “All these nerds were hitting me up on Twitter and emailing me, calling me n*gger and saying don’t take Peter Parker away from us,” Glover shares.  The role would eventually go to British actor Andrew Garfield, but Glover would end up having the last laugh–this past fall, Marvel Comics introduced Miles Morales, a Black and Latino teenager from the Bronx, as the new Spider-Man in their Ultimate line of comic books . ‘Immortals’ Is Not ‘Just A Guy Movie,’ Henry Cavill Says

‘It’s a visual spectacle, and the 3-D only adds to that,’ actor says of film, in theaters Friday. By Kara Warner Henry Cavill in “The Immortals” Photo: Universal Pictures For lovers of big-budget, sweeping Greek hero-based epics, the stylized, intense and slightly foreboding promotional campaign for “Immortals” should have already convinced you to get thee to a theater stat when the film opens on Friday. However, for those who might shy away from blood and gore, the stars of the film insist there is a lot more going on in “Immortals” than in typical testosterone-fueled swords-and-sandals flicks. “People are going to think it’s just a guy movie. It’s gonna be all just about violence and it is just for guys,” Henry Cavill , who plays demi-god Theseus, told MTV News recently. “This is entirely different. This has that very strong aspect, which all guys are going to love, the sort of blood and gore and swords and fighting, but it’s so beautifully done. This is Tarsem Singh we’re talking about here, it’s a visual spectacle, and the 3-D only adds to that. “I will say in the past I’ve been skeptical of [3-D, but] after seeing this, the technology has come along so far. This is incredible, and all the violence in the movie, if people don’t like that, it’s actually art-ified,” he explained. “It becomes a ‘beautific’ ballet of blood if you will. That all aside, it’s an incredible love story as well. You often think of these Greek epics — it skirts over all that stuff — but you’ve got an incredibly hardened man who’s hardened his heart to anything at this stage, and there’s a woman who manages to soften him so much so that he starts to think of things which he’s never even considered in the past.” Cavill’s co-stars were equally enthusiastic in their recommendations. “It’s like nothing I’ve ever seen,” Luke Evans , who plays Zeus, added. “Like Henry said, Tarsem at the helm with his imagination and his enthusiasm and his ideas, it just married so well with what he was doing and the final production. The values of it are just incredible, and we’ve got this 3-D thing and it just comes alive, it really does.” “I think it’s a different take on the whole Greek mythology and that’s going to be the biggest surprise,” Freida Pinto , who plays the “chosen” oracle Phaedra, said. “Visually it’s not like anything, it’s not like any of the big-budget action-packed films that you’ve seen before.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Immortals.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Estelle Recalls Losing Her ‘V-Card,’ On ‘When I Was 17’

‘Looking back, it was nothing like I thought it would be,’ she says on upcoming episode, airing Saturday at 11 a.m. ET/PT on MTV. By Sara Waber Estelle on “When I Was 17” Photo: MTV English R&B singer Estelle shares a very personal milestone in her life on this week’s episode of MTV’s “When I Was 17,” airing Saturday at 11a.m. ET/PT: She recalls losing her virginity, and it wasn’t exactly what she hoped for. “I didn’t have a boyfriend, per se,” she says in the episode, which also features Mike Posner and AnnaLynne McCord. “I definitely fancied a few guys. There was one particular guy that I fancied. He was cute, he was short, he had a gold tooth.” Like all good friends, Estelle’s mates blabbed to him. “My friends told him I fancied him, and then he knew where I lived, and he would just start hanging out outside my house,” the “American Boy” singer recalls. “So this guy was, like, my first full-out crush, all that good stuff.” Maybe she didn’t like his baggy jeans, but she was about to find out what’s underneath them. “Eventually, I lost my V-card. Looking back, it was nothing like I thought it would be. It was horrible.” Needless to say, Estelle and her mystery man didn’t have a fairy-tale ending. “We actually got along as friends, and then we did it and it was … ehh. And then we split up. “In hindsight I should have waited,” she added. “When I Was 17” — this week featuring Estelle, Mike Posner and AnnaLynne McCord — airs on Saturday at 11a.m ET/PT on MTV. Lil Wayne Producer Inspired By Nirvana For Rebirth II

‘I’m bringing it back with a new sound,’ Detail tells Mixtape Daily of finding inspiration in the past. By Rob Markman Detail Photo: MTV News Behind the Beats: Detail Though he is currently sitting atop the rap game, Lil Wayne transcends hip-hop. He flirted with rock early on, picking up the guitar for his “Leather So Soft” video with Birdman and again in his 2008 clip for “Lollipop.” But it was his 2010 rock-inspired Rebirth album that really stretched the boundaries. In October, on the set of Birdman’s “Y.U. Mad” video , Young Money president Mack Maine told MTV News of Wayne’s plans for a second rock LP. During the same sit-down, “How to Love” producer Detail spoke about his inspiration for crafting the tracks for Tunechi’s Rebirth II. “I’ve been listening to Nirvana, I’ve been listening to Pink Floyd,” he told Mixtape Daily. “The zone I’ve been goin’ in on this sh–, I’m bringing it back, back, back, back with a new sound.” Detail, who recently produced Bow Wow’s “Sweat,” is clearly not against finding inspiration in the past. Addressing any skeptics, the Detroit hitmaker promises that he will add his own unique twist. “We all get everything from the past musically, everything has been done already, so for me it’s just taking those elements that I could ride in my car and enjoy and bring it back to something new,” he said. According to Mack, Weezy is not only working on Rebirth II but is actually at least 12 songs into his upcoming I Am Not a Human Being II as well. For the YM prez it is Wayne’s ability to cross genres that makes him such a draw. “He captures all those different audiences, and then at a concert or a show, you bring all those different people together,” Mack explained. “You bring your Rebirth rock people, you bring your Carter people and you bring your I Am Not a Human Being [crowd], and you have a great show. That’s why we sell out arenas every night.” There is currently no release date for either LP, and when MTV News asked Wayne, he downplayed both albums. ” I Am Not a Human Being II and Rebirth II are so not important right now,” Tune said. “We got Twist coming, we got Tyga coming, and then we have Shanell coming, then we got Bow Wow — that’s what’s really important. What I’m doing is really never important, actually. I’m a very unimportant guy. It’s just me.” Related Artists Lil Wayne
