A New Mission for Liberty: Ending the Insane Drug War

In 2006, long-time readers may recall that I published an article entitled, “The Bicameral Universe: A Theory of Everything in One Blog Post“. I wrote the article after a flash of revelation while I was under the influence of Cannabis. Whatever any particular person may think of my article, I wrote it as a genuine expression of opinion, having read and thought deeply about the issues of God, man, religion, science, and the Anthropic Principle for many years. The article outlines my personal understanding of God and my place as a free agent in the multiverse. A year later, in 2007, I moved to the state of Hawai`i, where I met one Reverend Roger Christie, the founder of the Hawai`i Cannabis Ministry. On September 8, 2007, I was ordained as a Cannabis Minister in his church. For the past 10 years, Rev. Christie has operated the Ministry openly — one might even say “loudly”. The Ministry is located on the second floor of the Moses Building on Kamahameha Ave in downtown Hilo, right across from Hilo Bay. Indeed, everyone in this part of Hawai`i is entirely aware of the THC-Ministry, because of its central location and because of a large banner that has been hanging for years from the second floor window, declaring, “We Use Cannabis Religiously, And You Can Too!” Hawai`i Cannabis Ministry There is nothing subterranean in the way this Ministry was operated. The Ministry has existed as a transparent part of this community for many years. In fact, in 2008, Roger Christie ran for mayor of the County of Hawai`i as a Cannabis activist. I ought to know: I was a campaign director and webmaster. I attended campaign strategy meetings, and was present when Roger registered with the county as an official Mayoral candidate in the Summer of 2008. Needless to say, we were not successful in getting Rev. Christie elected to the highest office in Hawai`i County, but it was sure fun to try. Over the past two years, Rev. Christie has continued to operate the Hawai`i Cannabis Ministry openly, and the Ministry banner has continued to fly above Hilo Bay for all to see. But on July 8, 2010, everything changed. On that day, the DEA along with a dozen other government agencies descended on the Ministry offices and arrested Reverend Christie, along with 13 members of his flock, charging them with a slew of federal drug trafficking crimes. Details of the arrest have been documented by the Associated Press and by other local news organizations. At this time, Reverend Christie is being held without bail in a federal detention center in Honolulu. He has been appointed a public defender, and his trial has been set for September 8, 2010. Since the arrest, I have contacted our local chapter of the ACLU in an attempt to garner their interest in defending Rev. Christie and the other 13 members of the Ministry currently under federal indictment. For my part, while I am a member of the Ministry and have an interest in pro-Cannabis political activism, I am not now, nor have I ever been involved in the production or distribution of Cannabis. I am an activist, a writer, a thinker. But I have no problem defending the idea that smoking Cannabis is a legitimate spiritual activity that can bring practitioners closer to God and the ultimate meanings of life. Having said all of this, I can no longer stand idly by while my pastor — a man I know to be genuine, simple and honest — is arrested and railroaded by an out-of-control federal authority. Going forward, this publication will lend its support to the defeat of this irrational war on Cannabis, and will expose the damage it has caused to innocent men and women everywhere. Bryan’s Proud of Sex-Obsessed Religious Nuts: That’s Gay Extra

Nobody is as obsessed with how gay people have sex as the anti-gay zealots who claim to be disgusted by it. In honor of LGBT Pride month, Bryan Safi counts his lucky blessings for people like Pastor Martin Ssempa, whose “eat da poo poo” rant lifted from Vanguard's “Missionaries of Hate” episode has scored some 2 million hits on YouTube. Every day this week, infoMania's Bryan Safi, host of “That's Gay,” will release an exclusive web extra about some of the reasons he's so proud to be gay. Then tune into Current TV on Thursday at 10/9c for Bryan's special infoMania segment about Gay Pride — or, as he likes to call it, Gay New Year. It's time to take a long, hard look at the last 12 months and ask ourselves: Just what are we so proud of? infoMania is a half-hour satirical news show that airs on Current TV. The show puts a comedic spin on the 24-hour chaos and information overload brought about by the constant bombardment of the media. Senior Pastor Kong Hee

The 17 people who are assisting police with investigations include the megachurch#39;s founder, Senior Pastor Kong Hee, who was picked up early yesterday morning. A day after City Harvest Church completed a massive five-day seminar involving 30,000 people, foreign evangelists among them, police rounded up several individuals linked to the church for alleged misuse of church funds. Police also took away financial records and computers from the homes and offices of the people involved. They did

What 60 Minutes Missed in Uganda AIDS Story

This past weekend, 60 Minutes aired a story about the $15 billion anti-AIDS initiative known as PEPFAR, the US President’s Emergency Plan for Aids Relief, which was launched by President Bush in 2003. For the story, correspondent Bob Simon traveled to Uganda, a country that has lost more than a million lives to AIDS and has since benefited greatly from PEPFAR. But I noticed one glaring omission in the piece. When Simon interviewed Pastor Martin Ssempa, one of Uganda’s most well-known Christian ministers, he failed to mention Ssempa’s role in the country’s controversial anti-gay bill. It’s true that Ssempa has been one of Uganda’s leading HIV activists and that over the years his preaching of an abstinence-only approach has made him a darling of many US evangelicals. But more recently, Ssempa has become the Pied Piper of Uganda’s anti-gay campaign, leading rallies and protests to push the legislation through. We're in the process of editing the piece we shot on Uganda's anti-gay bill for the upcoming season of Vanguard. And where the two stories intersect is over the question of what effect anti-gay legislation might have on the fight against HIV/AIDS in Uganda. Many health care professionals we spoke to worry that the bill could have a very negative impact on whatever strides the country has made to combat HIV/AIDS. We’ll be exploring this question and more in the upcoming documentary. Follow the Vanguard team on Twitter. Pastor Predicts: Tiger and Elin Will Be Okay

Women might be calling for his head on a platter, and some golf fans may be warming up their pipes to taunt him from the stands, but at least one person is standing by Tiger Woods. Sort of. Reverend Ricky Kirton, the pastor who officiated the marriage between Woods and Elin Nordegren, has the following message for the couple: “Forgive each other. Be there for each other, and it will work out.” Kirton told People he “started to pray” for the pair soon after Tiger’s infiedlity leaked out. He then started to shake his head and laugh uncontrollably as the number of cheating stories piled up. Just kidding about the second part. Because Tiger Woods is out of rehab and still with his wife, we’re sure the tabloid coverage will stop… not! Of course, Kirton hasn’t spoken to Tiger or Elin since their 2004 wedding. Nor has he ever been married. It’s unclear what expertise he can possibly offer on this topic. All the pastor has are the words of wisdom he offers all engaged couples. “I tell them to remain true to their vows. I want them to know this is serious and they have to work hard,” he said, relaying the advice he delivers: “Remember these four phrases. I was wrong. I am sorry. Please forgive me. I love you.” He also might wanna add: get a second cell phone for your mistresses.

A Khristmas Katastrophe at the Kardashians!

If you thought Christmas at the Sheens was exciting, take a look at what went down with the Kardashians on December 24: As first reported by TMZ, Bruce Jenner dialed 911 on Christmas Eve because his neighbor allegedly went nuts at the valet standing outside the family’s residence. Witnesses reportedly told the cops the man appeared drunk and argued over the presence of the valet – even falling over at one point and spilling blood on the street. Sources close to the family say Pastor Brad – the man that should have his license revoked for marrying Khloe Kardashian and Lamar Odom – tried to help the wasted neighbor

After a platinum-spiked career in the 1990s with hits like “Angel of Mine,” “Don’t Take It Personal” and her duet with Brandy on “The Boy Is Mine,” the 29-year-old singer has struggled to regain momentum after a series of setbacks that included the 2000 suicide of her boyfriend, Jarvis “Knot” Weems, and the reported clashes with her label over her 2006 comeback attempt, The Makings of Me.
