‘Twilight,’ Justin Bieber Rule MTV Movie Awards

Sneak peeks from ‘Breaking Dawn’ and ‘Deathly Hallows’ make a splash at the big show. By Gil Kaufman The cast of “Twilight” at the 2011 MTV Movie Awards Photo: John Shearer/ WireImage Hollywood may have just found the ultimate killer mega-sequel on Sunday night (June 5) when “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” ran the table at the MTV Movie Awards , taking home five big ones, including Best Movie and Best Female and Male performance wins for stars Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart. Not too shabby for a bunch of undead vampires, buff werewolves and the lady who loves them. In the process, the kids from rainy Forks, Washington, nearly blanked the also multiply-nominated cast of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1,” surely giving someone in Hollywood a great idea to stage the ultimate fan-freakout-fantasy-world showdown once the two series wrap up. In the meantime, fans made do with lots of Pattinson and Stewart on Sunday night, along with generous helpings of Taylor Lautner and more Arnold Schwarzenegger illegitimate-kid jokes than anyone imagined from host Jason Sudeikis. With a set that looked like a backlot fantasia , with a ring of fake grass, crystal towers, caves, butterflies, LED lights and glittery, hanging jewels, the stage at the Gibson Amphitheatre was a nod to the “Lord of the Rings” and the fantasy world of movies. And with their hands all over each other, “Friends with Benefits” co-stars Mila Kunis and Justin Timberlake proudly handed out the night’s first award, Best Male Performance, to “Twilight” star Pattinson, who beat out love-triangle rival Lautner for the honor. “I really didn’t think I was going to win,” said the perpetually self-effacing undead star, who got a smile but no congratulatory, well, anything, from co-star Stewart. “This is kind of embarrassing now. Zac Efron was crying and stuff in that clip. … Thanks for showing all your support to the movies. See you next year!” Was there any doubt whether Tom Felton would take home the Best Villain award for his truly terrifying performance of blond baddie Draco Malfoy in “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1”? Flashing an uncharacteristic smile, the nice English lad said, “This will look very nice in my downstairs toilet,” thanking fans for a decade of support and promising that the final installment will be worth the wait. Poo Cocktail Supreme , a sawed-off arm, the world literally exploding all around you and the cuticle from hell: All worthy nominees, but it was Justin Bieber’s “Never Say Never” 3-D concert film that took the Best Jaw Dropping Moment prize. Though it looked like the Biebs wouldn’t be on hand to take home the honor, he made a surprise appearance and thanked his director, manager and family. “But most of all I want to thank my fans. I love you,” said Bieber, sporting white jeans and a blue blazer over a black T-shirt. It wasn’t all just movie magic, though. Funnyman Jim Carrey promised to bring some high-tech shenanigans to the proceedings, and he didn’t disappoint. The “Mr. Popper’s Penguins” star showed up in a green-screen suit that featured a number of high-tech images, but mostly just dogs humping. He was on hand to introduce the Foo Fighters, who lit the stage up with a blistering performance of their new single “Walk,” with a set that included six strobing movie-set klieg lights. Alas, Potter’s Death Eaters had nothing on Bryce Dallas Howard and Xavier Samuel’s showdown with Pattinson in “Eclipse,” which also won for Best Fight. Pattinson bragged about winning the filmed fight, even as Howard apologized for trying to hurt him. “It’s fine. I ripped your head off … and now you’re pregnant!” he said awkwardly, as Stewart cradled her face in her hands in embarrassment at his crack about their co-star’s bulging baby belly. You kind of couldn’t go wrong with the Best Kiss category , especially if you’re on Team Edward. But really? Mila Kunis and Natalie Portman didn’t snag the traditionally Sapphic-friendly smooch trophy? Nope, not when RPattz and KStew are in the mix. Taking the stage for the third time, Pattinson sheepishly said he felt bad because he, well, didn’t really feel like re-creating his smooch with Stewart from “Eclipse.” “You don’t want to kiss me, do you?” he said to Stewart. “Well, I mean, it’s been a long time, and … I think we should finally go for it,” she replied nervously, as the camera cut to a totally psyched Selena Gomez. “There’s someone else in the audience I think will appreciate it a little more,” Pattinson answered, before sprinting out to the crowd and laying a big, wet one on Lautner’s mouth , forehead and hand. When he tried to snag the award from Stewart’s hands, she grabbed it away and he grunted, “I wanna take you backstage!” in what amounts to PDA for these two. Luckily for the nominees in the Best Line from a Movie category , there were no quotable muggles or vampires in the mix, so you can be sure 7-year-old “Grown Ups” star Alexys Nycole Sanchez was going to celebrate her win later that night by getting totally “chocolate wasted.” This is so cool!” squeaked the adorable moppet before reprising her money line. The ladies in the Best Female Performance race were not so lucky, as Stewart beat out the Emmas (Stone and Watson), Jennifer Aniston and “Black Swan” star Portman. The publicity-shy actress, wearing a red leather minidress festooned with safety pins, said, “Oh, man, this is silly. It feels very incredible to be so completely supported by everybody that voted for me, it actually really, truly does. Thank you. We have obviously the greatest fans ever.” The luminous Reese Witherspoon was presented with this year’s MTV Generation Award , preceded by her “Water for Elephants” co-star Pattinson, giving a touching, and quite salty, tribute to the actress, who’s been his movie mother and lover. “I’m just so lucky in my career and my life,” said Witherspoon, who kindly corrected the punch line to one of Pattinson’s most off-color jokes, while praising her chemistry with “Sweet Home Alabama” co-star Patrick Dempsey. “I just want to say to all the girls out there: I know it’s cool to be bad, I get it … but it’s also possible to make it in Hollywood without a reality show … so for all the girls out there, it’s possible to be a good girl.” Related Videos Backstage At The 2011 MTV Movie Awards Amazing Exclusives From The MTV Movie Awards ‘Twilight’ Stars Take Over 2011 MTV Movie Awards Related Photos ‘Twilight’ At The 2011 MTV Movie Awards Exclusive Movie Props From The 2011 MTV Movie Awards Related Artists Justin Bieber

Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner Share Steamy Movie Awards Kiss

RPattz tells fellow Best Kiss winner Kristen Stewart that Lautner would just ‘appreciate it a little more.’ By Terri Schwartz Robert Pattinson kisses Taylor Lautner at the 2011 MTV Movie Awards Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage The third time was the charm for three-time MTV Movie Awards Best Kiss winners Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart … or, at least, it should have been. For the past two years, the “Twilight” stars have teased Movie Awards audiences with almost-kisses as they accepted their award. So on Sunday night (June 4), when presenters Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds announced that RPattz and KStew had won for their smooch in “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse,” it seemed this year’s show would finally bring the big moment fans have been waiting for. Well, er, it wasn’t. “I feel bad because I don’t feel like kissing you,” Pattinson apologized to Stewart onstage. “You don’t want to kiss me, do you?” Stewart, though, seemed more willing. “Well, it’s been a long time and I think maybe we should finally go for it,” she said to cheers from the crowd. But Pattinson still wasn’t having it. “I just think there’s someone else in the audience who I think will appreciate it a little more,” he said. Cue the camera cutting to a stone-faced Taylor Lautner. “Go get him,” Stewart encouraged. Pattinson then took to the Gibson Amphitheatre floor running. As the audience screamed in excitement, he leaned over and gave Lautner a full-on smooch on the lips as his werewolf co-star wrapped an arm around him. Of course, Lautner also wiped his mouth immediately after (too much tongue?), but Pattinson wasn’t done. Soon he was right back onstage going after Stewart — for real. She squealed, “No!” and ran away laughing. “What? I want to take you back stage!” Pattinson said with a flirty grin. And the pair made their dramatic and hilarious exit … but still no kiss. Robert Pattinson Wishes He Had ‘Something Funny To Say’ After Win

MTV News catches up with ‘Twilight’ stud after Best Male Performance win at the Movie Awards. By Terri Schwartz, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Robert Pattinson at the 2011 MTV Movie Awards Photo: MTV News In the biggest non-surprise of the night, Robert Pattinson won the MTV Movie Award for Best Male Performance for the third year in a row. But the man himself was still shocked. “I really didn’t think I was going to win. Zac Efron was crying and stuff in that clip!” Pattinson said during his acceptance speech, referring to his fellow nominee’s performance in “Charlie St. Cloud.” Still, he recognized that it was the fans who brought him the win yet again; his first win was in 2009 for “Twilight,” and then again last year for “New Moon.” “I’m consistently surprised, so thank you very much,” he said. “I hope we see you all again next year.” When MTV News caught up with the “Breaking Dawn” star after his big win, he was worried he dropped the ball a bit in his acceptance speech. “I’m just trying to come up with something funny to say to all of these. I pussied out on my first one and said nothing,” Pattinson said with a laugh. Fortunately, the man better known as Edward Cullen followed up his Best Male Performance acceptance speech with a much stronger Best Fight one. He took to the stage with “Eclipse” co-stars Bryce Dallas Howard and Xavier Samuel and, after a moment’s awkwardness, pulled out the humor. “Well, yeah, I won, ha!” Pattinson said as his acceptance. Howard turned to him, apologizing for her villainess role in “Eclipse” by saying, “I guess I should say: I’m so sorry I tried to kill you, Rob.” “It’s all right. I ripped your head off, and now you’re pregnant!” he replied to the audience’s laughter. MTV News has all of the highlights from the 2011 MTV Movie Awards . ‘Water For Elephants’: The Reviews Are In!

What do critics think of Robert Pattinson’s non-‘Twilight’ acting? Reese Witherspoon and Robert Pattinson in “Water For Elephants” Photo: David James/FOX “Twilight” films are never highly praised by critics. “New Moon” wallows at just a 29 percent approval rating at the Rotten Tomatoes review aggregator, and yet that film (like all in the franchise) has gone on to gross hundreds of millions of dollars at the box office. Robert Pattinson’s latest offering, the romantic drama “Water for Elephants,” is similarly seeing mixed reviews thrown its way. And while, again like “Twilight,” the film is based on a best-selling novel, “WFE” isn’t expected to open with anything like the box-office bang Pattinson’s vampire flicks have. Yet his performance is garnering much critical praise. Oscar winner Christoph Waltz, too, is being lauded for his villainous turn. Reviews have also applauded the film’s lush visuals, though they’ve also criticized it for subpar character development and an attempt to pack too much of the novel’s story into the film. For those critiques and more, read on for what the pros are saying about “WFE”: The Story ” ‘Water for Elephants’ is partly a sawdust love story, partly a survival story. It opens with an old man’s reminiscence, as Jacob Jankowski (Hal Holbrook) tells a young circus hand about his own Depression-era adventures under the big top. He didn’t join the show out of any romantic impulses about carnival life. The well-planned veterinary career he expected was torpedoed by a family tragedy. And the first train he could hop just happened to be carrying roustabouts, a menagerie, a gorgeous trick rider, Marlena (Reese Witherspoon), and her possessive husband, the circus’ owner and ringmaster, August (Christoph Waltz). That’s where the romance enters in. And the survival drama, too.” — Colin Covert, Minneapolis Star Tribune The Performances “Pattinson and Witherspoon, despite the limits of their earnest and fairly foolish characters, eke out a real spark of romance between them; several slow dances between them crackle with unspoken feelings, and even their lame flirty jokes feel genuine. Lurking over them both like some ghoul of violent circuses past is Waltz’s August, essentially Hans Landa in the big top but less fun to be around. Waltz brings shades of honor and even pity to August, but the movie is written in such broad strokes of right and wrong that from the moment August beats Rosie with an iron bar, there’s nothing to do but root for his inevitable downfall.” — Katey Rich, Cinema Blend The Visuals “Visually, the film is a handsome thing. With the help of production designer Jack Fisk (‘There Will Be Blood’), filmmaker Francis Lawrence (‘I Am Legend’) conjures a mostly believable world, circa 1931, of acrobats, sideshow entertainers, clowns and roustabouts down on their luck. You won’t ever forget that you’re watching a show, but it’s a highly watchable show nonetheless.” — Michael O’Sullivan, The Washington Post The Adaptation “Mr. Lawrence is so busy awkwardly jamming the novel’s minor events together and introducing (before dropping) colorful minor characters who have so little screen time that they barely register, that the movie fails to develop a sense of wonder. … As a piece of storytelling, the film displays its most disastrous choice when it makes the book’s climatic rampage seem perfunctory. This sloppily directed scene, which ends almost as soon as it begins, leaves you feeling cheated out of a necessary cathartic release.” — Stephen Holden, The New York Times The Final Word ” ‘Water for Elephants’ is one of those big, extravagant-looking romances that you might automatically deem ‘conventional’ — except for the fact that almost nobody makes big, extravagant-looking romances anymore. That’s the elephant in the room that the movie’s director, Francis Lawrence, faces head on. Whatever his movie’s flaws may be, he’s alive to the wonder of spectacle, and he still believes in the old-fashioned idea of movie stars: Those with two legs, and especially those with four.” — Stephanie Zacharek, Movieline Check out everything we’ve got on “Water for Elephants.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . ‘Water For Elephants’ Cheat Sheet: Everything You Need To Know!

From Robert Pattinson’s hairdo to his love scenes with Reese Witherspoon, MTV News has you covered. By Eric Ditzian Robert Pattinson and Reese Witherspoon in “Water for Elephants” Photo: 20th Century Fox The question for Robert Pattinson wasn’t if he would make the leap from “Twilight” vamp to major-studio player but when. The answer came in January 2010, when news broke that the British actor was eyeing a role in Fox’s “Water for Elephants.” Ever since, MTV News has been following anything and everything connected to the film, an adaptation of Sara Gruen’s best-selling novel. Now the movie is set to hit theaters and we’re gathering all our coverage into one place for a “Water for Elephants” cheat sheet. Training When word broke of Pattinson’s intention to play a veterinary student named Jacob in “WFE,” Oscar winner Reese Witherspoon was already signed on to play Marlena, a beautiful circus performer who’s married yet falls in love with Jacob when he joins the troupe. Sean Penn was originally eyeing the role of Marlena’s husband, but the part eventually went to another Oscar winner, . With Pattinson’s new part came a new haircut: Goodbye, Edward Cullen’s messy locks , hello Jacob’s cropped do. The first shot of Pattinson in action arrived in June, when a photo of him climbing a train popped up online. More pics followed, including looks at Reese and Rob sharing a smooch . Paparazzi weren’t the only ones paying attention to the production. Fans were everywhere, too. “The only thing I can compare it to is when Leo was in ‘Titanic,’ ” Witherspoon told MTV News in December. “It was that kind of fervor about a person. The women lining up outside the set — it was just unbelievable — till 5 o’clock in the morning waiting to just glimpse him.” Rehearsal Shortly after our chat with Reese, Fox released the first “Watermfor Elephants” trailer , highlighting the film’s story of a circus-centered love triangle between Jacob, Marlena and Marlena’s cruel husband, August/. That, and Rob’s many smoldering looks . A second trailer debuted in March, showing a darker tone and, perhaps to lighten the mood, Reese and Rob’s kiss. As the film’s release date neared, MTV News announced a live-stream event with Pattinson . The star debuted a new clip from the film and stuck around for a 30-minute chat, touching on everything from cursing on the set of “Breaking Dawn” to an awkward “WFE” love scene with Reese. “The love scene in this, I was doing it when I had a really bad cold,” Pattinson explained . “I’m not generally that awkward doing stuff apart from when I’ve got my belly coming out. But my nose is running all over the place and it was in one of the additional photography scenes, and Reese had this wig on, and literally, I was wiping my nose on her wig.” Performance The live chat wouldn’t be our only chance to talk with Rob and the rest of the cast. We met back up with him at a press event a few weeks later. This time around, Pattinson discussed love at first sight (he believes in it) and his preferred circus job (manual labor). “I find it very satisfying. I like stacking boxes and stuff like that,” he said. “And also I looked at all the background guys who were putting up a tent as a part of a scene and they were doing this stuff, like in ‘Dumbo,’ and it looked like something appealing about that, being a part of this team that creates this town in two days, and it’s quite cool. And I like the idea of being the absolute everyman as well.” And, just in case you didn’t get enough of RPattz, MTV News presented a live stream from the “Water for Elephants” red carpet in New York. Turns out, Rob barely made it to the event. “It was a mad rush to get here!” Pattinson said of trying to leave the set of “Breaking Dawn,” which wrapped production hours before the premiere. “I was leaving at, like, one o’clock in the morning. They’re like, ‘C’mon, we need one more shot!’ and you’ve got three people pulling you from either side!” Check out everything we’ve got on “Water for Elephants.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com .
