Robert Pattinson Signs On To ‘The Rover’

‘Twilight’ actor will play a thief in the Australian outback. By Fallon Prinzivalli Robert Pattinson Photo: Frazer Harrison/ Getty Images Robert Pattinson is on a roll, Twilighters. It was just announced that the beloved actor has joined director David Michod’s “The Rover,” also starring Guy Pearce. While there is little known about the project, Deadline Hollywood reports the film takes place in the near future and follows a man (Pearce) who ruthlessly hunts a group of thieves through the rough Australian outback after they steal his car. Pattinson will play a thief named Reynolds. According to Variety, Michod will pen the script based on an original idea from “Animal Kingdom” star Joel Edgerton and himself. David Linde and Liz Watts are set to produce under Lava Bear Films and Porchlight Films. The news immediately follows the announcement that Pattinson signed on for “Mission: Blacklist,” the movie adaptation of Eric Maddox’s book “Mission: Blacklist #1: The Inside Story of the Search for Saddam Hussein — As Told by the Soldier Who Masterminded His Capture.” The actor will star as the man who led the hunt. Both “Rover” and “Mission” are still in development, but Pattinson has a busy year ahead of him. He travels to the Cannes Film Festival to promote David Cronenberg’s mind-tripping “Cosmopolis” and closes out “The Twilight Saga” as Edward Cullen one last time in “Breaking Dawn – Part 2.” Also available on VOD beginning Friday is the titillating drama “Bel Ami,” which opens in Los Angeles, New York and select cities June 8. REVIEW: The Moth Diaries Tickles More Than It Bites, But Doesn’t Skimp on the Dreamy Atmospherics

Mary Harron ’s The Moth Diaries is appropriately titled in more ways than one: Groups of the fluttering, flittery creatures make a dramatic appearance in the story, which is adapted from Rachel Klein’s popular young adult novel about a possible vampire stalking unsuspecting adolescents at an all-girls boarding school. And the picture itself is wispy and translucent – it has no weight or body, and in some ways it feels more like a TV pilot than a feature film, barely substantial enough to fill up the big screen. Even so, it offers glancing pleasures of the atmospheric kind – the impact is the equivalent of a filmy cobweb brushing against your cheek. It tickles more than it bites. Sixteen-year-old Rebecca (Irish actress Sarah Bolger) has just returned to school for the semester. Her father, a poet, committed suicide not long ago, and Rebecca has been haunted by the event. But she’s ready for the new school year, and she’s looking forward to spending lots of time with her classmates, particularly her bestest best friend, Lucie (Sarah Gadon). Their school, formerly a turn-of-the-century luxury hotel, is the kind of place where the grounds are well-manicured and the bathtubs are long and deep – the girls take steamy, soft-focus baths and then shimmy into their long white cotton nighties before drifting off to sleep. Or perhaps not: The arrival of a mysterious new student named Ernessa (the ethereal-looking model Lily Cole , who appeared in Terry Gilliam’s Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus ) is unsettling enough to disturb their sleep patterns. She’s a tall, humorless girl who shimmers down the hallways like a Junior Morticia. She has the painted face of a stylized, porcelain doll, with two penciled-in arcs for eyebrows and a rosebud where her mouth should be. Her stare is especially glassy, though it also penetrates deeply. Rebecca takes an instant dislike to her, but Lucie is fascinated, and before long, Ernessa has the latter girl completely under her spell. Mysteriously, Lucie becomes pale and skinny and proceeds to waste away right before Rebecca’s eyes. Rebecca is worried sick about her friend; she’s also soothingly jealous that Ernessa has taken her place in Lucie’s affections. Who is this Ernessa person? And what does she want, other than to stir up semi-lesbian undertones (or overtones, depending on how you look at them) in the story? That’s the mystery Harron, along with crack DP Declan Quinn, works toward solving, in a misty, wispy, indirect sort of way. The movie’s conclusion is pat and disappointing, but Harron – whose last feature was the smart, sensitive Notorious Bettie Page – is good at laying down moody atmospherics along the way, including moonlit dream-terrors and a display of adolescent disaffection that’s like something out of a softer, gauzier Carrie . Also, Scott Speedman shows up, as a hunky poetry teacher, to keep things safely semi-hetero. The whole thing is rather silly, but it does offer the occasional elegant, gothic shiver. And if, for a possible vampire story, it doesn’t have much in the way of teeth – well, moths don’t either, do they? Follow Stephanie Zacharek on Twitter . Follow Movieline on Twitter .

New Trailer: Is Cosmopolis the Best Career Move Robert Pattinson Has Ever Made?

I mean, being plucked from the Harry Potter supporting wings and the odd pre-fame arthouse pic for eternal teen vampire glory aside, signing on for David Cronenberg ‘s Cosmopolis looks more and more like the best decision Robert Pattinson has ever made. Now that the edgy adaptation of Don DeLillo’s 2003 novel is heading for a Cannes debut — and with the fearlessly cold, cynical swagger RPattz displays in the latest Cosmopolis trailer — this is shaping up to be the career-changer the erstwhile Edward Cullen has been looking for. Close Pattinson-watchers already gleaned as much while keeping tabs on the project as it filmed, and devoted fans have been championing his turn as a rascally womanizer in the upcoming period pic Bel Ami as a move against type. (Whether or not they’ll turn out come opening day is another story.) But the new Cosmopolis trailer and Cannes announcement achieves something no mainstream romantic vehicle could do for Pattinson: It suggests to the uninitiated that there’s something more to him than teen idol fare. That was evident in the 30-second teaser released last month, but the full trailer reveals a clearer peek into the psyche of Pattinson’s protagonist Eric Packer — rich, cynical, destructive. Knowing danger is right around the corner, he launches himself into a chaotic 24-hour Manhattan bender filled with sex, gunplay, and anarchic shenanigans. “It makes me feel free in a way I’ve never known,” he says. I’m sure it does, RPattz. Now, Pattinson aside — the trailer also gives us Kevin Durand as Packer’s bodyguard Torval and Jay Baruchel as Shiner, his tech consultant, both of whom make this even more intriguing for me. Robert Pattinson Goes Shirtless In Exclusive ‘Bel Ami’ Clip

To kick off Summer Movie Preview Week, MTV News brings you a very intimate scene between Pattinson and Christina Ricci. By Kara Warner Christina Ricci and Robert Pattinson in “Bel Ami” Photo: Magnolia Pictures There are always a lot of movies to consider in putting together our Summer Movie Preview Week, particularly with so many star-studded superhero flicks, a “Twilight” heroine-turned-warrior princess, family-friendly fare and reliably raunchy comedies on the horizon. But in thinking about how to properly kick off the week, there is no better opener than shirtless Robert Pattinson in an exclusive clip from his upcoming steamy romance drama “Bel Ami.” The clip opens in a boudoir with the mostly naked and slightly disheveled Clotilde de Marelle (Christina Ricci) lying in bed, post-tryst, posing a question to her equally scantily clad lover, Georges Duroy (Robert Pattinson). Duroy is a self-made man of sorts, who uses his wits and powers of seduction to rise from poverty to wealth, from a prostitute’s embrace to passionate trysts with wealthy beauties in 19th-century Paris, where politics and media jostle for influence and where sex is power and celebrity an obsession. “What are you reading?” de Marelle asks Duroy. “It’s a letter from my father. Every week he puts on his best suit and goes to the priest and the priest writes a letter for him,” Duroy reveals as he gets back into bed. “And every week it’s the same thing: ‘Your mother sends her blessings. [The] pigs have diarrhea, when are you getting married?’ My father’s a peasant, he’s never left his village. And he’s asking me for money.” “I’d like to see where you grew up,” says de Marelle, who appears to be a young lady of the upper class. “I’d like to see you there,” Duroy says intimately before locking lips with de Marelle. “Promise me something,” she requests. “Don’t bring your other women here.” “I don’t have other women,” he counters. “All men have other women,” de Marelle says, which Duroy refutes and the lady reacts incredulously. “Honestly?” she says. “Honestly and truly,” he answers. Despite the sweetness and sincerity captured in this particular scene, Pattinson has teased that his character gets himself involved with a variety of female paramours. More importantly, in addition to his being shirtless in a lot of scenes, there’s also a lot of his bare bottom in the film. “I think there’s a lot of my crack in it,” he laughed when describing the film to MTV news. “I think there’s quite a bit of nudity.” “Bel Ami” opens in Los Angeles, New York and select cites on June 8. The film will be available on VOD on May 4. It’s Summer Movie Preview Week, and MTV News will be bringing you exclusive interviews, clips and photos for the most anticipated . Cosmopolis Trailer: Released, Intense

Robert Pattinson will return to the familiar role of Edward Cullen this November, as The Twilight Saga wraps up with Breaking Dawn Part 2 . Prior to that blockbuster’s release, however, fans will get a look at this actor like they’ve truly never seen him before: lying naked in bed; shooting his own hand with a gun; acting like a 28-year old billionaire in Manhattan who is in for one seriously messed up day in the film Cosmopolis . It’s an intense starring role, one originally meant for Colin Farrell before he dropped out due to a scheduling conflict. How well does Pattinson fill his handsome shoes? Watch the first official Cosmopolis trailer and keep an eye out for the movie U.S. release date. It hits theaters in France on May 23. Cosmopolis Trailer

‘Breaking Dawn – Part 2’ Teaser Trailer: Experts And Fans React

Ten-second clip left fans wanting to see more of Bella in her new vampire body. By Kara Warner Robert Pattinson in “Breaking Dawn – Part 2” Photo: Summit Entertainment Who else set their alarms for an early wake-up in order to see the brand-new “Breaking Dawn – Part 2” teaser trailer this morning? We got a full 10 seconds of teaser and are very pleased to have seen a brief glimpse of Bella in action as a super speedy vampire, as well as quick cuts to our favorite leading men, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner, looking all happy and handsome. We’re hoping for a lot more of that in the full-length trailer , among other things. But enough about us, what did our trusted “Twilight” experts have to say about the early-morning sneak peek? “All of the Team Edward and Team Jacob fans should be happy, but ‘Breaking Dawn’ is really all about Team Bella,” said Kallie Mathews of TwilightSeriesTheories.com. “Consider me ‘teased’!” Twilight Lexicon’s Laura Byrne-Cristiano also appreciated the very short seconds of tease but, like most of us, was left wanting more. “Ten seconds wasn’t really enough to capture anything. We did see Bella running through the trees, but we couldn’t see her face in that brief snippet,” she said. “So, we got only a little of the Bella with vampire powers that I was hoping for. It was nice to see a reaction of Jacob and Edward to Bella, but I really would have been more satisfied if Bella herself (in particular her facial expressions) was more in the shot. I’m hoping we actually get to see her and not just her point of view in the full teaser.” Seeing vampire Bella has all us fans excited, but of course there are those who will never get enough of Edward Cullen. When we asked fans to tweet us their reactions to the teaser, we received a lot of love for Pattinson’s beloved character as well as requests for more vampire Bella. @bellalorenza_ and @sherriatl want more of RPattz, whereas @catprodd requested the trailer “bring on the new vamps” that make their debut in part 2. @theLynsJ is all about the new vampy Mrs. Cullen. “Bella running through the woods,” she tweeted about her favorite part of the teaser. “I can’t wait to see her do vampire-y things!” What are you hoping to see in the full-length trailer for “Breaking Dawn – Part 2”? Leave your comment below! Check out everything we’ve got on “Breaking Dawn – Part 2.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com .

‘Cosmopolis’ Isn’t For ‘Team Edward Girls,’ Jay Baruchel Says

Robert Pattinson’s co-star describes the David Cronenberg film to MTV News as ‘an exceedingly strange movie.’ By Kevin P. Sullivan Robert Pattinson and Sarah Gadon in “Cosmopolis” Photo: Caitlin Cronenberg’s Twitter David Cronenberg ‘s next film, “Cosmopolis,” may have won MTV’s Movie Brawl thanks to the support of die-hard Robert Pattinson fans, but one of his co-stars told MTV News the film will be far from what Twilighters are expecting. While promoting “Goon,” a film he stars in and co-wrote, Jay Baruchel shared his experiences working for a short period of time on the Manhattan set of “Cosmopolis.” Unfortunately for the Pattinson fans out there, according to Baruchel, Cronenberg’s next movie might be too strange for them. “An exceedingly strange movie,” Baruchel said, describing “Cosmopolis.” “All the Team Edward girls won’t be seeing this one, I don’t think.” For Baruchel, working with Cronenberg — who made a name for himself with horror films — was a dream come true. “Basically, it was that Cronenberg is a hero of mine. I’m a Canadian boy. I love horror. That’s all I want to do,” Baruchel said. “If you’re a Canadian horror fan, Cronenberg’s the Holy Grail.” The opportunity for Baruchel came about in a rather mundane way, but his reaction to it was anything but. “I was in Manhattan last year, keeping my lady company, and they called up and were like, ‘Hey, do you want to do two days on this new Cronenberg?’ I said, ‘Yep!’ ‘Wait, wait. We’ll send you the script.’ I couldn’t care less; what I’m playing is a means to an end. I just want to go and film-nerd-out about ‘Videodrome’ with him for two days.” The actual experience of working with Cronenberg did not disappoint. “Not only did I get to go and be a fly on the wall for two days and watch one of my heroes do his thing, I actually had the pleasure being directed by him,” Baruchel said. “Coolest thing ever.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Cosmopolis.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . How Did ‘Comopolis’ Top ‘Twilight’ In Our Movie Brawl?

This week’s ‘Twilight’ Tuesday takes a closer look at why fans chose Robert Pattinson’s indie over ‘Breaking Dawn – Part 2.’ By Kara Warner Robert Pattinson and Sarah Gadon in “Cosmopolis” Photo: Alfama Films Over the course of the “Twilight Saga” movies, we at MTV News have come a long way in understanding the franchise’s very passionate fanbase. So when we launched the MTV Movie Brawl 2012 , I thought there was a very good chance “Twilight” fans would vote “Breaking Dawn – Part 2” through to the championship round and into the championship slot, no problem. I was wrong. “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2” was ousted early, in the second round, by eventual champ “Cosmopolis.” Yes, the two films share a very popular star in Robert Pattinson, but compared with the millions upon millions of “Twilight” fans who have read all of Stephenie Meyer’s books, we’re guessing not as many are familiar with “Cosmopolis” through its source material by Don DeLillo. So here’s what I think: All of you wonderfully dedicated Pattinson fans are in it for the long haul. You’re choosing to grow and evolve right along with Pattinson and the ebbs and flows of his chosen profession. That sentiment is exemplified perfectly by this poignant comment by MTV community member and Pattinson fan, Lior : “VOTE COSMOPOLIS! Support Rob’s new, professional career! SEE HIS TALENT BEYOND TWILIGHT.” Not that the excitement for the final chapter in “The Twilight Saga” has lessened in any way, of course, but because there’s more mystery surrounding “Cosmopolis,” it is the more intriguing of the two films. And let’s not forget about Pattinson’s other upcoming film, “Bel Ami,” which only narrowly lost to “Cosmopolis” in that first round. I would have thought the interest in seeing RPattz’s bare behind on the big screen would have easily trumped the film about a fully clothed young finance wiz taking a day-long limo ride though New York City. Consider me very pleasantly surprised. What do you think, “Twilight” fans? Why did “Cosmopolis” triumph over “Breaking Dawn – Part 2”? Let us know in the comments or tweet me @karawarner!
