Paula Abdul Returns To TV With ‘Got To Dance’

The former ‘American Idol’ judge will be lead judge on CBS dance show. By Gil Kaufman Paula Abdul Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Paula Abdul said she’d be back in the judge’s chair. Well, a judge’s chair, anyway. A year after walking away from “American Idol,” the former Laker Girl and choreographer to the stars will be returning to TV on the new reality dance show “Got to Dance.” According to the Hollywood Reporter, Abdul will be the lead judge, executive producer, creative partner, mentor and coach on the CBS show that is based on an already popular British dance competition. The network gave a green light to the show in March, and Abdul was long rumored to be one of the top choices for lead judge, in addition to having a number of behind-the-scenes and on-air responsibilities on the show. The program is likely to be a mid-season replacement, which could mean that Abdul will go head-to-head with “Idol” in 2011, which will be in its first season without Abdul former on-air sparring partner Simon Cowell. Cowell is departing after Wednesday’s season-nine finale to concentrate on the 2011 launch of the American version of his hit British reality singing show, “The X Factor.” Abdul was also long rumored to be in the running to join “X Factor,” but appears to have opted instead to headline her own program, which is being billed as broadcast TV’s first all-ages, all-genre dance series, presenting everything from “ballroom to breakdance, bhangra to ballet and tap to tango.” The acts will compete before a panel of judges, and viewers will vote for their favorites during the semifinals and finals. Abdul will be wading into a fiercely competitive market, with ABC’s “Dancing With the Stars” already a ratings juggernaut, followed by the popular “So You Think You Can Dance” on her old network, Fox. There are also dancers on NBC’s “America’s Got Talent,” MTV’s “America’s Best Dance Crew” and a variety of other shows on basic cable networks, including two upcoming CW shows called “One Mass Dance” (about flash-mob-style routines) and “Shed to Wed” (a pre-wedding weight-loss dance-off). Is there space for another dancing show on your viewing schedule? Did Paula make the right choice? Share your thoughts in the comments. Related Artists Paula Abdul

‘American Idol’ In 60 Seconds: Casey Makes Way For Lee And Crystal

The judges get their way, with a little help from the blond guy’s poor song choice. By Jim Cantiello Crystal Bowersox and Lee DeWyze on “American Idol” Photo: AP Images This week’s “American Idol” had the contestants singing two songs each, which was good news for Crystal Bowersox , better news for Lee DeWyze , and totally irrelevant news to Casey WhatsHisFace . Round one was the contestants’ choice! That blond guy did himself no favors by picking a song by an artist who’s somehow less famous than he is, and MamaSox went the predictable route with a poor Melissa Etheridge impression. That left Lee DeWyze to steal the show with Skynyrd’s “Simple Man,” which was quite simply his best performance on “Idol,” period. In round two, the judges picked the music. Kara and Randy did their best to sabotage Ponytail Man’s “Idol” run with a tuneless, low-impact John Mayer song. Meanwhile Ellen DeGeneres finally did some good on the “Idol” stage by allowing Crystal Bowersox to bare her soul with Paul McCartney’s “Maybe I’m Amazed.” The ‘Sox may have hit some bum notes, but the best note she struck was keeping the pronouns the way the Beatle wrote them. She didn’t care that she sounded like a transgendered man in love with a woman, so why should America? A thousand awesome points to MamaSox. But it was predetermined that it was Lee DeWyze’s night to shine, what with Simon assigning him “Hallelujah” and basically telling America that Lee was going to have “a moment” with the song before the dude had moaned a single note. (Why is it when Paula Abdul critiqued Jason Castro ahead of time everyone freaked, but when Simon Cowell did the same for DeWyze, it became gospel?) The good news is that DeWyze did not perform the done-to-death (no pun intended) Jeff Buckley arrangement. The bad news is the version DeWyze did was the Overwrought, Overproduced, Overcooked Vegas Spectacular Rendition, complete with strings, horns, timpani, choirs, SteadiCams, angels, furrowed brows and the cast of Cirque du Soleil waiting in the wings, ready to pounce on Lee’s signal, which he never activated. (Also, no bagpipe.) Lee sounded great, but then again, with that setup even Seacrest could have warbled a line and sounded like Pavarotti. It’s a miracle 30 million Americans didn’t choke Tuesday night, given the way “Idol” producers shoved Lee down viewers’ throats. On Wednesday night’s results show, after an interview segment that lasted approximately 42 minutes, we saw footage from the “Idols” hometown visits! And everyone cried! Casey got emotional when he visited the hospital that saved his life, Crystal got weepy at a stadium and Lee DeWyze sobbed from start to finish. We met doctors, teachers, paint salesmen, local Fox affiliates, AT&T employees and creepy fans who ran next to limousines and plotted to tattoo autographs to their chests. (This … is “American Psycho”!) To put things in perspective and make the season-nine finale showdown all the more enticing, “Idol” booked Perez Hilton’s pet project Travis Garland as a guest performer, and suddenly this year’s crop of contestants seemed exponentially more appealing. (Also now suddenly appealing? Justin Bieber ! Travis Garland should be on standby on Tax Day to make that hell seem like a holiday, too.) In the end, the results played out exactly the way Simon and company hoped they would. Lee DeWyze and Crystal Bowersox will face off next week, while Casey James was left to sing that John Mayer song again, except this time he performed with a little girl prop. It’s too late to get the “awww, look at the cuteness” votes, Casey. Did you feel like Simon Cowell was heavy-handed in his promotion of Lee DeWyze this week? Sound off in the comments. Hey Paula

Leaving American Idol certainly hasn’t cramped Paula Abdul ‘s style. She was pap’ed harder than ever leaving a doctor’s appointment in Beverly Hills. When she said she was forever our girl, we guess she knew what she was talking about.

Paula Abdul Is NOT Returning To ‘Idol’

American Idol bosses have shot down reports that former judge Paula Abdul is returning to the hit reality show. Hollywood has been buzzing with the news that Abdul was set to rejoin the judges’ table less than a year after she left. Last August, Abdul announced long-running negotiations had fallen through and she had quit the singing competition show after eight seasons. She has since been replaced by comedienne Ellen DeGeneres. But now with the news that Simon Cowell is leaving after this season to concentrate on the US version of his hit British show The X Factor , rumors began swirling that Abdul had been offered her old job back. A source told US magazine In Touch: “They want Paula back. They’re not sure if she’d be the fifth judge, but they are talking to her. People tuned in to see Paula’s wacky antics and her chemistry with Simon. The show is just not as much fun to watch without her.” However, American Idol executive producer Cecile Frot-Coutaz had denied reports Fox network executives are wooing Abdul back. Frot-Coutaz told the New York Daily News : “There’s no truth to that rumor.”

TV Bites: Is Paula Abdul Planning a Return to American Idol?

Might Paula Abdul Return to American Idol?

American Idol got a much-needed shot of adrenaline and entertainment this week, when Adam Lambert returned to the stage that made him famous. But ratings for season nine have plummeted, along with its enterainment value and overall talent level (no offense, Crystal Bowersox ). Especially because it will be competing with Simon Cowell’s The X Factor next year, the series needs to do something, it needs some kind of savior, it needs… Paula Abdul? Sources tell the latest issue of In Touch Weekly that “it’s a huge secret, but American Idol producers might be trying to woo Paula Abdul back to the struggling show.” Compared to when Paula was on the panel, viewership has fallen by approximately six million this season. That may have a lot to do with a lackluster set of finalists, of course, most of whom are the same type of singer. But with Simon departing, “they want Paula back,” an insider tells the tabloid. “They’re not sure if she’d be the fifth judge, but they are talking to her. People tuned in to see Paula’s wacky antics and her chemistry with Simon. The show is just not as much fun to watch without her.” Do you agree? Do you wanna see Abdul return to Idol?

‘American Idol’ In 60 Seconds: Katie And Andrew Ignore Adam Lambert’s Wisdom

Meanwhile, Ryan Seacrest’s erratic behavior was the only thing keeping us watching. By Jim Cantiello Katie Stevens and Ryan Seacrest on Wednesday night’s “American Idol” Photo: Frank Micelotta/ Getty Images “American Idol” in 60 Seconds has fast become an MTV News institution, but it goes by so fast that it’s not always easy to catch every golden nugget. So, here we present to you Jim Cantiello’s bite-size recap of this week’s “Idol” high jinks. This week, “American Idol” producers targeted the tween demo by forcing the top nine to sing the songs of Elvis Presley! And where better to rehearse than on the stage of the Cirque du Elvis Las Vegas stage show?! Adam Lambert broke all sorts of barriers by being the first openly-“Idol” contestant to return to the show as a guest mentor. Although Adam’s advice was spot-on and intuitive (Yo, Andrew, stop being a bore! Yo, Aaron Kelly, stop being a 5-year-old! Yo, Lee Dewyze, Jocelyn Wildenstein moves her face more than you!) most of the contestants blatantly ignored his wisdom. The result? An episode as entertaining as “3000 Miles to Graceland.” Yep, it was that bad. The only thing that kept viewers from switching over to “Lost” was Ryan Seacrest’s increasingly erratic behavior. He slow-danced during Tim Urban’s (kind of awesome) performance; he slurred his speech; he made inappropriate comments to contestants; he forgot he was on live television — it was like Paula Abdul never left “Idol.” So congratulations, Mariah Carey! Your loopy “TRL” appearance from 2001 is no longer the craziest thing we’ve seen on live television. On Wednesday night’s results show (which featured a double elimination), we learned that “Idol Gives Back” will have the same lineup as the one from two years ago. (Basically.) We also learned that Kara DioGuardi is somehow even more unappealing when she’s holding an adorable African baby. How is that even possible? Two “Idol” alums returned to sing a song, and each brought something special to the stage. Adam Lambert brought lasers and a glittery ear monitor, while Brooke White brought along deadweight in the form of Miley Cyrus’ tone deaf ex-boyfriend, Justin Gaston. Once results time arrived, Andrew was the first to get the boot, and he straight up didn’t sing “Straight Up” as his farewell song. By the end of the hour, Katie Stevens was the other singer sent packing, putting the “cut” in “Connecticut.” Next week is “Idol Gives Back,” which means we’ll hear inspirational ballads from the top seven. You’ve been warned. Do you think Katie and Andrew were eliminated too soon? What was the highlight of this week’s “Idol”? Share your opinions in the comments! Katie Stevens And Andrew Garcia Sent Home On ‘American Idol’

‘Idol’ alums Adam Lambert and Brooke White, along with Justin Gaston, perform during results show. By Gil Kaufman Katie Stevens and Andrew Garcia on “American Idol” Wednesday Photo: Fox Despite doubling up on the eliminations thanks to Michael Lynche’s save last week, there were no major upsets on Wednesday night’s (April 14) “American Idol,” as bottom-three regulars Andrew Garcia and Katie Stevens were sent into “AI” purgatory until this summer’s tour. It was a surprisingly dry-eyed goodbye, as the two underperforming singers appeared resigned to their fate as “Idol” footnotes. The eliminations came after a season-high 34 million votes were cast and, thankfully, the end came quickly for Andrew Garcia. Host Ryan Seacrest brought him out alongside Casey James and Aaron Kelly near the top of the show, and rather than putting him through the usual torture of waiting nearly 55 minutes to learn his fate, Seacrest abruptly said, “Andrew, it’s the end of the road. I’m sorry. America has voted. It’s the last chance tonight on ‘Idol.’ ” That meant James and Kelly advanced, while Garcia — who wowed the judges early on with his oft-cited cover of former judge Paula Abdul’s “Straight Up” but never again brought that kind of thunder — was done in by his Velveeta take on Elvis’ “Hound Dog.” He went out singing James Morrison’s “You Give Me Something” from the semifinals. “I appreciate everything,” the often-emotional Garcia said. “I’m glad I’m here. I’m glad I’ve been through what I’ve been through. You guys let me experience something that I’ve never experienced.” The second to go was teen Katie Stevens, whose bluesy, brassy “Baby What Do You Want Me to Do” landed her in the bottom three for the third and final time after Simon Cowell called her performance annoying, shrieky and too loud. Stevens said she’d tell her friends about the amazing people she met and the unbelievable experience she had on the show. Trying to fight back tears, she reprised her cover of the Beatles’ “Let It Be,” her voice cracking at times. Joining Aaron and Casey in safety were Lee Dewyze, Crystal Bowersox (who tootled a little ditty on her harmonica in celebration), Siobhan Magnus and “Teflon” Tim Urban, who again escaped elimination and was sent to safety as Lynche and Stevens were left awaiting their fate near show’s end. After serving as this week’s mentor, season-eight runner-up Adam Lambert showed the kids how it’s done with a smoke-and-lasers new-wave blowout of his hit “Whataya Want From Me.” Also performing were season-seven finalist Brooke White and “If I Can Dream” web star — and Miley Cyrus’ ex — Justin Gaston, who teamed up for a schmaltzy cover of, you guessed it, “If I Can Dream.” The obligatory group lip-synch included an extra cheesy, show-tuney medley of “Burning Love,” “Teddy Bear,” “Return to Sender” and “Viva Las Vegas” that would have had even jumpsuit-wearing fat Elvis waddling for the exits. Next week’s theme is “inspirational songs,” and the shows will coincide with the “Idol Gives Back” charity event. It has not yet been announced if producers will forego an elimination during the fundraiser, as they did in its inaugural year in 2007; Michael Johns was sent home during the 2008 event. Among the acts pitching in next week are Jordin Sparks, Carrie Underwood, the Black Eyed Peas, Annie Lennox and Jeff Beck. Were you surprised Andrew and Katie were sent home?
