Paula Deen Apology: Posted, Removed, Vague and Really Awkward!

Just hours after she bailed on the Today show , Paula Deen issued a bizarre statement regarding her use of racial slurs, only to promptly yank it off YouTube. It’s the weirdest, least sincere-sounding apology ever. See for yourself: Paula Deen Statement on Racial Slurs With an edit after almost every sentence and frequent stumbles over words, this “apology” achieves the rare feat of leaving Deen’s image worse off than before. Rather than explaining why she used racial slurs in the past, which she admitted under oath in a lawsuit deposition – she just says she’s really sorry. For what? You wouldn’t know based on this video! She doesn’t say. Clearly, some PR team (and not a very good one, mind you) threw together a script and had her read from it, rather than letting her speak from her heart. The result is Deen looking ridiculous … neither sincere, nor apologetic, nor capable of understanding what the heck she even wants forgiveness for. It was taken down shortly after it was posted, but as we know, nothing can truly be axed from the Internet. Her PR people could be axed, however … One assumes this was filmed in response to the controversy that arose over a lawsuit against Deen, who is accused of discrimination in the workplace. A former employee said Deen made racial slurs against her; Deen denied the allegations of the lawsuit, but admits she has used epithets in the past. And to think, there was a time when the nutritional content of Paula Deen recipes was the most controversial topic associated with the Southern chef.

Paula Deen Admits Using Racial Slurs, Denies Being Racist

Paula Deen admitted during questioning in a discrimination lawsuit against her that she has used racial slurs in the past, but insists she is not a racist. The 66-year-old Food Network star and restaurant owner was peppered with questions about her racial attitudes and actions in a May 17 deposition. Lisa Jackson, a former manager of Uncle Bubba’s Seafood and Oyster House, is suing Deen and her brother, Bubba Hiers, who own the restaurant. Jackson claims that she was sexually harassed by Paula Deen and worked in a hostile environment rife with innuendo and rampant n-word use . A transcript of the deposition shows Deen being asked if she has used racial slurs. “Yes, of course,” Paula replied, although she added: “It’s been a very long time.” Asked to give an example, Deen recalled the time she worked as a bank teller in southwest Georgia in the 1980s and was held at gunpoint by a robber. The gunman was black, Deen told the attorney, and she thought she used the slur when talking about him. “Probably in telling my husband,” she said. Deen said she may have also used racial slurs when recalling conversations between employees at her restaurants, but couldn’t recall any specifics. “But that’s just not a word that we use as time has gone on,” Deen said. “Things have changed since the ’60s. And my children and my brother object to that word being used in any cruel or mean behavior. As well as I do.” William Franklin, Deen’s lawyer, said later that “contrary to media reports, Ms. Deen does not condone or find the use of racial epithets acceptable.” Deen and Hiers have both denied the allegations made by Jackson, who is white, and Franklin says Deen is “looking forward to her day in court.” It’s been a rough year and a half for Deen, who has also been feuding with Anthony Bourdain and has come under fire for pushing a diabetes drug. She has lost a lot of weight, however. Kudos on that.

Paula Deen Lawsuit: Chef Reponds, Denies "Baseless" Allegations

Attorneys for Paula Deen said that the former worker suing for sexual harassment and being subjected to a hostile work environment is making false allegations. Deen’s camp says Lisa Jackson only made the claims after rebuffing attempts to resolve the matter amicably, and after the chef refused to pay her to keep quiet. The lawsuit, filed Monday, “makes false allegations against Paula Deen and they will be proven false in court,” said a statement from the firm representing Deen. The law firm said the suit was filed in a local court after the Southern cooking star and Type 2 diabetic refused to pay the woman to “address false claims.” Attorneys for Jackson, a former general manager at the restaurant, didn’t immediately respond to an email seeking comment regarding Deen’s rebuttal. Jackson said her doctor encouraged her to quit managing Uncle Bubba’s Seafood and Oyster House in Savannah, Ga., due to panic attacks and other stress. The restaurant is owned by Paula Deen and her brother Bubba Hiers. Jackson, who is white, said in the lawsuit that Hiers routinely made inappropriate sexual remarks and that she heard Heirs and Deen using racial slurs . The woman also said in court papers that she saw Hiers violently shake a black employee and that he “fostered a workplace environment of intimidation.” Deen’s law firm said that she had investigated Jackson’s claims and had unsuccessfully attempted to reach out and address them with her. “She has made baseless, inflammatory allegations, threatening to go to the press and ruin Paula Deen’s reputation,” the firm’s statement said. After she allegedly demanded a large cash payout, “we refused to bow to that kind of pressure and refused to pay money to address false claims.” Jackson’s lawsuit seeks unspecified damages. Paula Deen Named in Sexual Harassment Lawsuit

Already embroiled in controversy over her recent disclosure of diabetes , Paula Deen is now accused of sexual harassment in the termination of an employee. The queen of Southern fried cooking nixed allegedly philandering general manager of one of her restaurants because, as she put it, “If you think I have worked this hard to lose everything because of a piece of p**sy, you better think again.” Paula replaced the G.M. with a woman, and now she’s suing Paula and her brother for … sexual harassment. That qualifies as irony right there. Lisa Jackson worked as G.M. for Uncle Bubba’s Seafood and Oyster House in Savannah, Ga., from 2005-2010. Paula’s brother, Bubba Hiers, is part owner with Paula. Lisa claims Bubba brought “inescapable pornography” to the workplace all the time, often visiting XXX websites on the kitchen computer and failing to log off. Smart. According to the suit, Bubba allegedly asked Lisa to bring pics of herself to work, photos of her when she was younger, telling her, “You have nice legs.” Bubba also told Lisa two women at the restaurant were “fat girls” and shouldn’t be wearing capri pants or skirts. Lisa also says Bubba once told another female employee who had just received dentures, “I bet your husband is going to like that.” Lisa goes on to say that Bubba once told a joke to the staff that described why men should have sex with women who had flat heads … “because you can sit your beer on top of her head while she is giving you a b**w job.” And Lisa says Bubba is racist, using the N word a lot and making racist jokes. There’s a lot more, including alleged violent behavior on Bubba’s part and an incident where he allegedly kissed Lisaand spit on her. Lisa, who says she was forced to quit because of intolerable working conditions, is suing for unspecified damages. No comment from Deen’s camp. [Photo: WENN.com]

Paula Deen Chows on Burger on Vacation

Paula Deen is on a vacation … and going to TOWN on a burger! The Food Network star, who recently revealed she has type 2 diabetes, was photographed eating a burger and fries Monday on a Caribbean cruise ship with her fans. Deen, 65, is taking heat from critics, such as Anthony Bourdain , who say she has profited from her indulgent cooking and recipes while keeping her condition secret . This story is not likely to douse that fire. While diabetes isn’t a sentence to life without burgers, eating a healthy diet is one way to manage it … which makes Deen’s admission all the more baffling to some. As Deen made her announcement, she also partnered with drug maker Novo Nordisk to launch a new site, Diabetes in a New Light, offering diabetes-friendly recipes. Then she turns around and inhales a juicy burger. Nice. Deen says she’s cut back on sugary/fatty foods, and that “I want to try to get across moderation,” she says. If that’s true, shouldn’t she … eh, forget it. Tell us: Does Paula Deen set a terrible example?

Diabetics to Paula Deen: You Hypocrite!!

Celebrity chef Paula Deen is, quite predictably, being called a hypocrite both for hiding her diabetes while promoting unhealthy foods and for turning around and partnering with a pharmaceutical drug company that provides relief for diabetics. Deen, a popular Food Network host, confirmed Tuesday that she was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, the most common form of the disease, three years ago. In the same breath, she announced a partnership with drug maker Novo Nordisk. Fellow celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain is perhaps her best known and most vocal critic, but diabetics across the United States are up in arms at Deen’s disclosure. “It is hypocritical [for Paula] to have continued to very publicly promote entirely unhealthy food choices so vital to the management of diabetes,” one told Fox411. “We of course don’t know the terms of her contract with the company, but it seems either stupid or hypocritical of them to be endorsing her lifestyle,” says another. Deen gave no comment when it was requested, but a source close to the network tells Fox411 that they found out about Deen’s condition only a week ago. Some of Deen’s fans expressed outrage that the 65-year-old chef had found what they believe is a way to capitalize on a diagnosis she kept secret for so long. “I understand she has an empire and a huge following to protect, but working with Novo Nordisk is just adding another revenue stream, and that is tweaking people like me who are in the diabetes education community,” said Carl Moore. Moore, a type 2 diabetic and an educator on diabetic issues, said the news didn’t exactly come as a surprise to him and others with the disease. “Many of us have watched the Buttuh Queen for years cooking with no thought for the consequences and waiting to hear she was diabetic,” he said. Betsy Lampe, who has struggled with type 2 diabetes for more than 20 years, said Deen has already missed her first opportunity to educate victims. “She didn’t tell us anything on the ‘Today Show’; she got really defensive,” Lampe said. “She didn’t even tell us what her blood sugars were.” “You know, diabetics want to entertain and cook too. If I were her I would have announced a whole new show for entertaining as a diabetic. It was just offensive to me. “She kept talking about moderation, but moderation in what? She didn’t explain.” “She is overweight and that makes her, in my opinion, not credible or valid to promote diabetes drugs,” adds Richard Deems, a type 2 diabetic like Deen . The American Diabetes Association, however, was supportive of the Southern chef. “People may benefit from seeing how others successfully manage type 2 diabetes,” the group said in a statement. “Paula Deen, through her work with Diabetes in a New Light, is likely to inspire many people living with type 2 diabetes.” Hopefully, the group says, people will “take a more positive approach to their diabetes care. We commend her for speaking out on behalf of people with type 2 diabetes and welcome her to the Association’s Stop Diabetes movement.”
