Steve “Franchise” Francis was a 3-time NBA All-Star who earned over $100 million as one of pro basketball’s brightest young superstars. Beloved for his freakish athleticism and fearless edge, he flourished before crumbling into a sickly cautionary tale (stone-cold druggy?) who seems lost, hopeless and unloved . Hit the jump for a photo gallery of Steve Francis’ heartbreaking fall from grace.
Do you live near a toxic chemical plant? Study Shows Blacks Live Closest To Dangerous Chemical Plants A new study finds that the Americans who live near hazardous chemical industrial facilities are disproportionately African American or Latino, are more likely to live in poverty, and have lower incomes and education levels than the national average. Via HuffPo reports: These trends accelerate rapidly as one gets closer to the “fenceline” areas nearest dangerous chemical plants. More than 134 million people live in danger zones created by about 3,400 U.S. facilities that manufacture chemicals, produce paper, treat water, generate electric power, refine petroleum, or otherwise use or store hazardous materials. Millions more people work in or visit these areas. The study examined the people living close to chemical plants and found: The poverty rate for the fenceline zones is 50 percent higher than for the U.S. as a whole. Average household incomes in the fenceline zones are 22 percent below the national average. The percentage of adults in the fenceline zones with less than a high school degree is 46 percent greater than for the U.S. as a whole. The percentage of blacks in the fenceline zones is 75 percent greater than for the U.S. as a whole. The percentage of Latinos in the fenceline zones is 60 percent greater than for the U.S. as a whole. The study was produced by The Environmental Justice and Health Alliance for Chemical Policy Reform, a group of organization connected to the Coalition for Chemical Safety (in which I participant as an adviser to Greenpeace). In the wake of the April 2103 West, Texas, chemical plant explosion, which killed 15 people and injured 160 more, President Obama issued an executive order directing federal agencies to improve the safety of our industrial chemical plants. The Obama administration is now conducting a review of these issues. Today’s study defines this struggle: on the one hand, some of the wealthiest Americans, like the Koch brothers, pressing Washington to stop reforms to make chemical plants safer; and on the other, the poorest, least powerful people in society at greatest risk of harm or death from these facilities. What a horrible way to kill a child. Woman Accused Of Stomping Son To Death Some women shouldn’t have ovaries. According to NY Daily News: More than her four children, most certainly more than her 9-year-old boy, Omaree, Synthia Varela-Casaus apparently loved meth. Her relationship with the drug began when she was 15, and its addiction was the driving force in her sad, crime-laden life, leaving her a wreck of a woman at age 38. She lives now in the Metropolitan Detention Center in Albuquerque, charged with kicking, beating and stomping to death young Omaree Varela in a seething rage in December. She did not mean to kill her son, she told police. She was only disciplining him and “kicked him the wrong way,” KOAT-TV reported. Varela-Casaus has been arrested more than 20 times, on charges ranging from meth possession to prostitution Two of her children, one of them Omaree, were born while she was in jail. At varying times, she has left her kids in the care of friends, relatives and the foster care system. Of the four youngsters, Omaree had spoken out in his own defense. Last summer, he managed to dial 911 while a 20-minute reign of verbal abuse and physical threats barraged him. On an audiotape of the call, his mother and his stepdad, Steve Casaus, are heard berating him in a series of profanity-laden rants. The kid never had a chance. Sad.
Driver Who Killed Teen Bicyclist Sues his Family For $1 Million via Fox News The family of a teenage bicyclist who died after being hit from behind by an SUV is now being sued for more than $1 million by the woman who was behind the wheel. Sharlene Simon claims in court papers the accident caused her “great pain and suffering” and accuses her victim Brandon Majewski 17, and his two friends of negligence, calling them “incompetent bicyclists,” the Toronto Sun reported Friday. The lawsuit drew an angry response from Brandon’s family. “I feel like someone kicked me in the stomach — I’m over the edge,” his father, Derek Majewski, told the Sun. “Sometimes, it makes my blood boil.” The dad’s attorney Brian Cameron told the Sun that in all his years as a lawyer, he had never seen anyone ever sue a child that they killed. “It’s beyond the pale,” he said. He is representing the elder Majewski in a seperate lawsuit that seeks $900,000 in damages from Simon. The accident happened early in the morning of Oct. 28, 2012, on a dark, rural road in Innisfil, about 55 miles north of Toronto. Brandon’s two friends were both 16. One was seriously injured; the other escaped injury. They are also defendants in Simon’s lawsuit, as is the county where the accident occurred. Simon, a 42-year-old mother of three, said she was going about 55 mph in her KIA Sorrento when she hit the boys — about 5 mph more than the speed limit, the Ottawa Citizen said. No criminal charges were ever filed against her. “It’s a tragedy what happened to the boys, but it’s also a tragedy that’s happened to (Simon),” her lawyer Michael Ellis told the Toronto Star. “I understand their grief and I understand what they must be going through is awful, but my client is also living with this nightmare every day.” Shutterstock
As bank robbers go, this guy was no pro. Florida Man Tries To Rob Bank With Job Application Via Sun-Sentinel reports: Felipe Cruz was doubly doomed, FBI agents said, when he tried — but failed — to rob the Chase Bank in Pompano Beach on April 10. First, agents said, Cruz chose a teller who, protected by bulletproof glass, rebuffed his robbery. Second, as if it wasn’t enough to botch the stickup, he left behind a robbery note conveniently containing his name. According to FBI agent Sarah Gioielli, Cruz, dressed in a long-sleeved shirt and ball cap, strode into the bank at 101 S. Pompano Parkway and presented a note to an unidentified female teller. “Give me the 100s 50s 20s now,” the note stated. “Do not set the alarm. Hurry!!!” The teller simply backed away from her bulletproof window. Cruz, stymied, fled the bank empty-handed. But, agents said, he left his stickup note behind. His demands had been penned on the back of an online job application form, complete with the handwritten username of CRUZFELIPE36. It also included a password, Gioielli stated in a federal criminal complaint. Broward Sheriff’s Office investigators then lifted fingerprints from the note that matched those of the 39-year-old Cruz, Gioielli said. They determined he lived in an Oakland Park apartment about 4 miles from the bank. Police are now actively searching for the hapless holdup man. The charge: attempted bank robbery. “By trying to rob a bank with a demand note written on the back of his employment search form, the robber has given us a clue,” FBI agent Michael Leverock said, in a model of understatement. “He probably should have continued looking for honest work.” Are things really bad?! We doubt he’ll be getting any jobs at ANY banks to soon…

Hallelujah! Boy Abducted Set Free After Annoying His Kidnapper By Singing Gospel Songs 10-year-old Willie Myrick’s three hour ordeal ended when the driver of the car he had been forced into allowed him to go because he wouldn’t stop singing Every Praise. Via Mirror UK reports: Youngster Willie Myrick was snatched outside his house in Atlanta, Georgia and bundled into a car for three hours. He had apparently been enticed to the vehicle with the promise of cash, before being taken by a man who is now the subject of police investigations. But his ordeal was cut short because he refused to stop singing a popular gospel song. Willie sang Every Praise over and over, annoying the driver of the car to such a degree he was forced to let him go. Lyrics to the song include “Sing hallelujah to our God, Glory hallelujah is due our God, every praise every praise is to our God.” The 10-year-old told WXIA-TV: “He opened the door and threw me out – he told me not to tell anyone.” Jesus took the wheel and put Kirk Franklin’s holy ghost in that boy!
