Common Talks 13th , Social Activism Common is really living up to his original rap name “Common Sense” these days. The rapper’s activism anthem “Letter to the Free” is the end-title track on 13th and has already been nominated for a 2016 Critics’ Choice Documentary Award for “Best Song in a Documentary.” The song’s lyrics tackle America’s racial divide and reflect the film’s focus on the prison system as a new form of slavery in America. It’s also featured on Common’s own latest album, “Black America Again.” Take a listen: We caught up with Common to chat about the single, his invovlement with the project, and how his affiliation with Ava Duvernay movies have shaped his musical direction and activism… What made you want to become involved with 13th in the way that you have? 13th hit me in a way…it was like I know some of this, I didn’t know about this ALEC stuff, I didn’t even know the 13th amendment said that — I’ll be honest — I didn’t even realize that the 13th amendment said that if you’re a “criminal,” you can [legally] be a slave. So all that information, I’m still continuing to learn. It’s been an awakening for the country. This is part of American history and the same way we teach our kids about the people who came to revolutionize this country, we need to teach them about slavery too. We need to teach them about slavery and how that ties into where we are now. If they can see that, they would be able to put two and two together and start functioning differently. Your name has become more and more synonymous with “wokeness” in a sense since your involvement in Selma a few years back. How do you feel that movie experience prepared you for projects like 13th and even placing some of the messages you have in your latest album? Well, Selma was definitely one of the moments that changed my life forever. One of the greatest experiences of my life. One of the reasons is being introduced to the Civil Rights Movement in another way. It’s more than just researching and reading it in textbooks. You’re talking to people. Ambassador Andrew Young came and had a talk the first day of our rehearsal and said “What are you willing to die for? Live for that.” He said that was the whole mentality of the people of the Civil Rights movement. “We’re willing to die for freedom, so we’re going to live for freedom. We’re dedicating each day toward that.” One of the practical things I was able to connect with was the fact that each and every person that was a part of that movement, each day they contributed something towards fighting for that freedom. They dedicated their lives to saying “okay, some part of my day will be dedicated towards that.” I felt like, I have been doing things and putting my spirit and energy into wanting to see change, but I had to do more. I had to contribute my days into being more active and more present — not only in the music. So then, aside from the music, what ways did you begin pursuing to be more active? That made me think about things, and question how can I use my creativity not only towards the art that I’m doing that is socio-political work, but how can I use my mind towards these communities. So that made me start going into communities and start to listen and made me more political than I had ever been. Before I would think — “Okay, I need to vote for the president.” And “I’ll vote for this person I know about.” But now, I need to know. If I have a problem with police injustice and police killing Black people, I need to know what things I can do policy-wise to help change things. Who is the person that selects the police chief? Who is the person that sets up the training for the policemen in this state and that state? Not that I’m going to know everything, but even if it’s connecting with groups that do know, so that I can get that information and see how I can contribute my name, celebrity, whatever access I have, and creativity towards that change. What action has 13th pushed you to take? With this movie, I’ll put it this way: If I’m going to talk it and rap it, I’ll have to be it. So I will be at somebody’s prison — just building with brothers and sisters about getting out and what life will be like getting out and trying to provide help in that way. I even realized this morning from Kim Fox, the State’s Attorney of Chicago — she comes from Cabrini-Green in Chicago so she’s for the people, she comes from it — she says one of the biggest issues is, they don’t assist people when they’re about to get out of jail, so when they come out, they’re shocked. And it’s hard to get jobs, hard to get housing, you can’t vote in certain places, so then you feel second-class, and then you end up going back to that same cycle. So, if someone has been convicted of a crime, when they’re about to get out, when do we start training them to work on that? I want to help with figuring that out. Nice! He was hospitalized after some kind altercation with an employee at a gym, which promoted Kanye’s personal physician to call 911 out of concern for his famous client. This incident followed a series of bizarre headlines centered around the rapper, from his claim that he is a fan of Donald Trump… to his bashing of Beyonce… to his cancelation of the rest of his Saint Pablo tour this year. Numerous insiders have since reported that Kanye didn’t merely suffer a nervous breakdown … … but he continues to suffer from various mental issues. What brought on these problems? The most reliable outlets seem to believe it was a combination of two factors: The ongoing trauma of wife Kim Kardashian being assaulted and robbed at gunpoint in Paris in October. The anniversary of his mother’s death in 2007. Sources have said that West never properly dealt with the latter, while he can’t stop dealing with the former, creating endless amounts of stress. Throughout his hospitalization, however, Kanye could count on the support of Kardashian. She remained by his bedside nearly around the clock. But it didn’t take long for the rumor mill to churn and for websites to claim that Kim may have been physically next to Kanye… but it was a different story emotionally. “The trauma of the [robbery] made her more hesitant to do things,” according to Us Weekly, referring to how Kanye had been forced to tour on his own since the armed robbery. “Of course it strained their relationship,” the tabloid added. “Because she hadn’t seen him.” Suddenly, fans were wondering if Kim and Kanye were getting divorced . And it didn’t help when People Magazine confirmed that West and Kardashian are living apart at the moment . It’s mostly a safety precaution, due to Kanye’s mental state, but still. The optics aren’t very good. However, E! News is here to put these divorce rumors to rest. Kanye “will remain getting outpatient treatment till he is fully recovered,” a source told the outlet over the weekend, emphasizing that Kardashian is still closely involved in the rapper’s life. “Kim wants him to continue getting therapy even after all of this. According to the director, he and Marlo Brando conspired in 1972 to shoot a scene in the film Last Tango in Paris that depicted the actor actually raping co-star Maria Schneider with a stick of butter. Brando was 48 at the time of the movie and Schneider was 19, with the later saying herself back in 2007 that the famous scene was actually a sexual violation. “I felt humiliated and to be honest, I felt a little raped, both by Marlon and by Bertolucci,” she wrote in an essay for The Daily Mail. “After the scene, Marlon didn’t console me or [apologize]. Thankfully, there was just one take.” Schneider passed away in 2011. Meanwhile, in a Q&A filmed at La Cinémathèque française in Paris, Bertolucci confessed three years ago that he and Brando came up with the idea to use a stick of butter to rape Schneider on camera the morning of the shoot. Excerpts from this interview only just came to light this week. “The sequence of the butter is an idea that I had with Marlon in the morning before shooting,” the director explains in this interview. “We were having, with Marlon, breakfast on the floor of the flat where I was shooting. There was a baguette, there was butter and we looked at each other and, without saying anything, we knew what we wanted.” (In the horrifying scene, which earned Schneider critical appeal from those who presumed for years that she was acting, Brando uses the stick of butter as sexual lubricant.) Back in September of 2015, Nicole Arbour’s “Dear Fat People” video offended anyone who’s ever been overweight, anyone who’s ever known anyone who was overweight, and anyone with even the slightest understanding of how comedy is supposed to work. Normally we’d count her out, but Nicole is thirstier than a hungover Lawrence of Arabia, and now that it seems she’s figured out a way to keep her career alive by drinking the blood of her fellow Z-listers. As you may have heard, Vanderpump Rules star Scheana Marie has filed for divorce from her husband, Mike Shay. In fairness, Sheana and Shay are considerably more famous than Arbour, but you’re judged by the company you keep, and apparently Mike and Nicole are close friends who probably have long, serious discussions about comedy, a la Ariana Madix. It seems Mike is part of a hip hop crew called Dat Dope Group (Ed. note: Picture 350 “crying with laughter” Emojis here.), and because nothing could be that dumb without having Nicole Arbour involved, Nicole Arbour is involved. Nicole and Mike recently premiered a single called “Show Me How You Werk”, because apparently they have no sympathy for the fact that we can’t laugh for the next 80 years and live normal productive lives. Here they are at some sort of red carpet event showing off their best “I totally belong here” faces: So what does all of this have to do with Scheana? Good question, hypothetical person who cares enough about Nicole Arbour to read this far into an article about her. (Hi, Nicole!) Nicole has been saying words about Scheana, accusing her of lying about Shay’s disappearance and blaming her for the dissolution of the marriage: “When Scheana reported that Mike was missing, he was performing live shows and she knew where he was,” Nicole recently told Radar Online. “He was on red carpet! Like that’s how much of a lie all of this was.” Going on long after you want her to stop talking is Nicole’s signature move, so she did exactly that, adding: “[The divorce] is definitely Scheana’s fault and she tried to sabotage Mike’s live show because she’s jealous that he was getting more attention than her. “She needs a storyline so she made up that he’s doing drugs and drinking again, and that just wasn’t true.
