From Deer Hunter to Bridesmaids 2: Judd Apatow and Robert De Niro Toast Universal at Tribeca

The first full day of Tribeca 2012 yielded at least one major highlight, as festival co-founder Robert De Niro and comedy mogul Judd Apatow joined Deadline’s Mike Fleming for a discussion commemorating the 100th anniversary of Universal Pictures. (Fellow Universal blockbustress Meryl Streep, alas, backed out at the last minute due to illness.) At least, that was the plan ; what ensued was a wide-ranging, freewheeling chat about the pair’s work for the studio, the natures of their comedy, varying sequel statuses, and much more. As per Tribeca custom , read on for this years revelations from from De Niro and Co. Without De Niro’s Cape Fear remake, Apatow might not be who he is today “One of first important milestones of my career was [when] I created The Ben Stiller Show with Ben,” Apatow said. “And the sketch that got us picked up was the Cape Fear parody. Have you ever seen that?” “No, I didn’t know that,” De Niro said dryly. “Do you have a lot of friends who want to show you parodies of you, or are they afraid to?” Apatow asked. “Sometimes,” De Niro replied. “So we studied that movie shot-for-shot, and then Ben was dressed up like Eddie Munster,” Apatow explained. ” Cape Munster . That’s how we got the how picked up.” The filmmaker gestured back to the screen, invoking the epic Universal clip reel that opened the event. “The rest I didn’t care for.” De Niro didn’t like The Deer Hunter ‘s poster And according to him, there’s even a better design somewhere out there. “I was given the script by Michael Cimino, and I liked it very much,” De Niro recounted of his first experience on a Universal film. “I even liked the way it was presented. The cover of the script read ‘ The Deer Hunter ,’ and it was a character against a white Cadillac with a deer strapped on to the hood, and he had a shotgun hung over his arm. And I felt it would have been great for the actual poster of the movie instead of the more complicated kind of poster that I didn’t think worked very well.” (Apatow later chimed in: “When The Deer Hunter came out, I was 10 years old. We had the VHS of it, I watched it, and that’s how I became this.”) Neither Apatow nor Universal are about to apologize for Funny People Fleming asked Apatow about the tonal change of pace — and commercial downshift of fortune — that the director experienced with his 2009 film. “I think it’s important for people to make movies that are deeply personal,” Apatow said. “I think you have to be willing to push it, and when you do things that are intimate, there are some people who are like, ‘I was at work all day today, and I don’t give a shit what you’re upset about in your life.’ And there are the people who really want to feel other emotions than just pain or watching the bad guy get beaten. So you’re always going into more difficult territory when the move isn’t about making you happy, but it’s about why comedians are in pain — much like…” Apatow turned to De Niro and paused for dramatic effect. ” The King of Comedy . I’m bringing you into it!” Fleming followed up by asking Apatow what the conversations with Universal were like as the film came together as the challenging piece it was. “In all honesty,” Apatow said, “they loved the movie and were supportive through the entire creative process and when it came out. It’s been an amazing experience for me working with them. They want me to grow and get better at what I do, and part of that is for me to take risks and try new things. And it was never weird. I’ve had weird. I’ve been on planes coming back from the test screening of The Cable Guy . I know what it’s like when people are like, ‘Oh my God. What are we going to do?’ I’m like, ‘It’s great , isn’t it?'” The Bridesmaids sequel is still in limbo “You know, I don’t know,” Apatow said when asked about the status of a follow-up to last year’s Oscar-nominated blockbuster, which he produced. “It took five years to make it; I think there’s some exhaustion from having made it. I think down the line we’ll see if people are reinvigorated to want do it or not. I would like to see a sequel to…” Again, Apatow faced De Niro and hesitated. ” The Deer Hunter .” The Midnight Run sequel may be writing around Charles Grodin The development of the recently announced Midnight Run 2 was thought to hinge heavily on the participation of Grodin, who brilliantly played De Niro’s foil in the 1987 comedy classic. But to hear De Niro tell it, the writers might have an answer for that. “Somebody had approached me — a young writer — and he had said how much he liked it. And he said, ‘What about writing a sequel if you want?’ I said, ‘Fine, sure.’ So it’s been going through these kind of changes. [… De iro’s character Jack Walsh] is helping the son of Charles Grodin. He’s gotten himself in trouble. That’s where we are. The script is being reworked again. But I hope to do it. It was a lot of fun to do.” De Niro always had a feeling he could do comedy Asked about how he transitioned to comic roles from his celebrated dramatic roles of the ’70s, De Niro cited those very same roles as his comedic inspiration. “You know, Taxi Driver had a few funny things in it. Mean Streets , King of Comedy … They weren’t obvious ‘comedies,’ but they were funny. The comedy was out of situations, the irony or whatever.” ” Goodfellas is hilarious!” Apatow half-joked. “I saw it in the movie theater and it just rocked the house!” “Joe Pesci’s scene with Ray Liotta is a hysterical scene, yeah,” De Niro said. ” Analyze This came from Billy Crystal, who had the idea. Billy had a script and thought it’d be fun if I did that. And somebody tod me about it but said they didn’t know. I said, ‘No, it sounds interesting. Let me see. Let’s get together and talk about it. And then we had a reading of it and so on, and figured it out. But I never had a problem thinking I could be funny — especially that kind of character, since he’s bigger than life anyway.” Apatow is all for seeing movies on your phone Surprised? Don’t be: “Anything that allows me to watch a film while going to the bathroom is awesome.” De Niro isn’t totally averse to Raging Bull 2 ” I don’t know about it,” he said to a laugh from the crowd. “I mean… Maybe if it’s a great, great script? Have you read it?” “It’s great,” Fleming said. “Oh,” De Niro replied, tongue mostly in cheek. “Then I’d consider it. Sure.” Apatow’s only acting experience is a… Jack in the Box commercial Asked if he would consider starring in a film, Apatow didn’t hesitate. “I am a bad actor,” he said. “I learned that in a Jack in the Box commercial when I was 20. I was reading the lines, which were about how good the burger was, and I kept pointing to it. I couldn’t stop pointing . And the director of the commercial taped my hands to my legs, and I never acted again.” “But he did hire you?” De Niro asked. “Yes, I got work from here up,” Apatow said, waving his hand above his neck. “Well, that’ll give you something,” De Niro said. “If I was in it for his own amusement, it would have been like a scene from Fame .” Pronto! Skinnies And Some Supras: Lil Wayne Has A Shoe Deal!

Lil Wayne Inks Deal With Supras Lil Wayne is caking in more money…if you even thought it was possible. Weezy just did an interview with MTV and revealed that he has a new shoe deal with Supra as part of his big Trukfit launch. While this is pretty cool for him, it’s hard for us to imagine people trying to dress like him. You do recall that he’s the same guy that went on the VMAs wearing some damn leggings. However, the Supra line will be good for his whole skating persona. We wonder if people will go crazy for these like they did for the Yeezy’s that Nike put out. Only time will tell. Levon Helm, Drummer For The Band, Dies at 71

Levon Helm, the legendary drummer for The Band, died today. He was 71. “Levon Helm passed peacefully this afternoon,” his rep confirmed. “He was surrounded by family, friends and fellow band members and will be remembered by all he touched as a brilliant musician and a beautiful soul.” Earlier this week, Levon’s wife Sandy and their daughter announced on his official website that he was “in the final stages of his battle with cancer .” The Arkansas-born Helm played in a rockabilly band in the late 1950s before moving up to Canada and joining guitarist Robbie Robertson and three other musicians to form what would become Bob Dylan’s back-up band in the mid-1960s. Later called simply The Band, the group featured Helm’s drums and vocals on songs like “The Weight,” “Up on Cripple Creek” and “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down.” Their final concert, filmed by Martin Scorsese, was The Last Waltz in 1976. In their message to his fans, Levon Helm’s wife and daughter said: “Thank you fans and music lovers who have made his life filled with joy and celebration … he has loved nothing more than to play, to fill the room up with music, lay down the back beat, and make the people dance! He did it every time he took the stage.” “We appreciate all the love and support and concern.”

Random Ridiculousness: Pilot Forgets To Lower Wheels When Landing Plane Because He Was Too Busy Text Messaging

Flight Aborted Due To Pilot Preoccupied With Cell Phone Why in the hell was this pilot texting anyway???? Confused Jetstar pilots forgot to lower the wheels and had to abort a landing in Singapore just 150 metres above the ground, after the captain became distracted by his mobile phone, an investigation has found. The Australian Transport Safety Bureau report on the May 27, 2010 incident on Flight JQ57, from Darwin to Singapore, reconstructed a scene of cockpit chaos. The captain, of more than 13,000 hours flying experience, was distracted by incoming text messages on his phone, while the first officer, of more than 4000 hours experience, was probably fatigued, the report said. The pair had lost their “situational awareness”, leading to poor decision-making and hampered communications, investigators found. The problems aboard JQ57 began when the co-pilot, the first officer, switched off the autopilot on the 220-seat Airbus A320 to make preparations to land. Somewhere between 2500 feet and 2000 feet, the captain’s mobile phone started beeping with incoming text messages, and the captain twice did not respond to the co-pilot’s requests. The co-pilot looked over and saw the captain “preoccupied with his mobile phone”, investigators said. The captain told investigators he was trying to unlock the phone to turn it off, after having forgotten to do so before take-off. At 1000 feet, the co-pilot scanned the instruments and felt “something was not quite right” but could not spot what it was. At this stage the captain still did not realise the landing gear had not been lowered, and neither pilot went through their landing checklist. At 720 feet, a cockpit alert flashed and sounded to warn that the wheels still hadn’t been lowered. At 650 feet, the captain moved the undercarriage lever “instinctively” but then a “too low” ground-warning alarm sounded as the plane sunk through 500 feet, indicating the landing gear was not fully extended and locked. The co-pilot was confused by the captain’s action in lowering the wheels, as he was getting ready to do quite the opposite — to abort the landing and re-ascend to the skies, investigators said. Neither spoke to each other about their intentions. At 392 feet, the crew aborted the landing and powered up the thrust. At this time the pilots had lost track of their altitude, thinking they were much higher, at about 800 feet. Jetstar said it had incorporated the the lessons learned from the incident in its pilot training. “Pilot distraction meant all the landing checklist items weren’t completed before the aircraft passed an altitude of 500 feet, at which point a go-around was required under our operating procedures,” said Jetstar’s Chief Pilot, Captain Mark Rindfleish. “The combination of factors on JQ57 has provided new learnings and the opportunity to add to these safeguards, which we take very seriously.” Changes introduced included completing landing checklists before 1000 feet and a reminder to pilots to ensure their mobile phones are switched off before take-off, he said. Last time we checked all electronics including cellphones must be in the “off” position while landing! Source More On Bossip! Cash Money Lets You Do ‘Whatever You Want,’ Kevin Rudolf Says

‘Don’t Give Up’ singer says working with the label is ‘like going to school with no homework.’ By Jocelyn Vena Kevin Rudolf Photo: Michael Caulfield/ Getty Images Considering that Kevin Rudolf has written enough pop songs for artists like Jesse McCartney and Leona Lewis, it comes as no surprise that he can craft a pop song for himself. The Cash Money artist dropped “Don’t Give Up” this week after he decided to embrace that lighter side for himself. “It’s the first song I wrote for the album. I wrote it right when I got to New York from L.A. I hadn’t really written a song for myself in a long time. I got really inspired. I left L.A. and I felt a thousand pounds were off my shoulders,” he said of the song, which will serve as his next album’s lead single. “This was a message I wrote to myself and in the end it reaches other people and makes them feel good. “Everyone’s trying to be edgy all the time and it’s not edgy anymore,” he later explained. “And I just wanted to have the courage to put something powerful into the world.” The upbeat track is full of folky bounce and handclaps that perfectly mirror the sunshine of the lyrics, where Rudolf sings, “So don’t give up, don’t look down/’Cause your time is gonna come around/ Don’t look back come to fall/ Baby, you were born to be a star.” Given that Rudolf has explored many other people’s pop personas in the past, forging his own was an interesting step to take. “It’s different. If I’m writing for the other artists, I’m focused on them and the subject matter and what’s going on in their lives. It just depends. Obviously if you’re gonna work on Selena Gomez you know you’re making an uptempo usually, usually more of a dance record, usually lighter subject matter, obviously,” he explained. “If I’m working with Lil Wayne, I know I’m making something that’s a lot harder, obviously making hip-hop, making beats more than I am writing a song necessarily,” he continued. “But usually the ones that just, like this one just came straight out, like I didn’t even write it, so that one, I knew it was for me. The more I got into it, I knew it was actually right. And then [Cash Money bosses] Slim and Baby heard it and then they felt the same way, so there we were.” Rudolf notes that being on a label like Cash Money affords him the opportunity to try out new sounds, without any objection from his superiors. “It’s like, being on Cash Money, it’s like going to school with no homework. It’s like you just show up and it’s awesome and you get to do whatever you want as long as you’re working and you’re creative and you’re contributing, they don’t care what you do,” he said. “I mean that in a great way. I don’t think you would get the artistry from Nicki Minaj and Wayne and Drake and all these people if you were being told what to do. There’s no way. And that’s why Cash Money has very creative artists. “They don’t have the filter that many record company A&R’s and label bosses have. They trust that you’re the artist,” he continued. “You don’t tell Wayne, ‘A little more energy in this part and less cursing,’ and if I have a day where I feel great and I want to write a song called ‘Don’t Give Up’ and share that with the world, then they’re all for it.” Related Artists Kevin Rudolf

Chris Pine Leaves Action For Drama In ‘People Like Us’

‘I was interested in doing a film that was smaller scope than the films I had done previously,’ actor tells MTV News. By Kevin P. Sullivan Olivia Wilde and Chris Pine in “People Like Us” Photo: DreamWorks Pictures Chris Pine and first-time director Alex Kurtzman have a few things in common. Both made names for themselves with large action movies like J.J. Abrams’ “Star Trek” and “Transformers” (Kurtzman as a writer and producer), and the upcoming film ” People Like Us ” marks a distinct change for both men. “People Like Us” is the story of a young man who falls on hard financial times just as he learns that his recently deceased father has left a small fortune to a sister he doesn’t know. MTV News spoke with Pine about the change of pace for him and what it was like working with co-star Elizabeth Banks. MTV News : What was it that attracted you to the script originally? Chris Pine : What attracted me to the film was just the quality of the writing. I was really interested in doing a film that was smaller scope than the films that I had done previously in the past couple years. This one was an intimate family drama, and I thought even the anomalous experience of someone finding out that their father had a completely separate family, everybody’s got family dramas of their own. Certainly, though I can’t relate to that specific experience, I can relate to having stuff in the family. This one takes place in the moment where all the stuff that’s been brewing for years and years and years finally comes to a head and has to be dealt with. MTV : How does making the film’s central relationship a brother-sister one affect the overall movie? Pine : Clearly it’s going to progress in a way that can’t be a love story between a sister and brother. It is in a sense that these two people get to know one another and find that they love one another because they’re the only two people that can relate and understand the experience of living in that family with that father and that mother. And because they’ve been so traumatized by the lies that their family has told for so many years, they find solace in one another’s mutual understanding. I think it’s refreshing because I don’t think people have seen something like this specific story in cinema before, at least in the States. There’s a quality of the film that kind of reminded me of one of my favorite films, “Kramer vs. Kramer,” and it kind of has the depth of something like “Ordinary People” and the humor of a comedy. It’s just — for the lack of a better term — very human. MTV : Did it strike you as interesting that the film lacks the central romance that drives most dramas? Pine : Not really because there are many stories in your own life that you lead that have nothing to do with a romantic other, whether it be work or dealing with your family. Oftentimes, many of the most pivotal stories that we play out in our own life don’t have anything to do with a girlfriend or a lover or a husband or a wife. That didn’t pose a problem for me because I thought that this was a story more about a man really becoming an authentic adult and learning how to deal honestly with those people in his life, his father and his mother and his girlfriend and his newfound sister. MTV : With the relationship with Elizabeth Banks’ character being so central, what was your relationship with her like on set? Pine : It was a pretty intense filmmaking experience. We had a lot of fun on set, and I love Elizabeth to death. She’s incredibly smart and doesn’t suffer fools. I appreciated her work ethic and just shooting the sh– on set. It was a film that demanded a lot of our attention and a lot of protecting our respective characters. I felt very protective of Sam. The piece, as it progresses forward, clearly because of the lies Sam tells along the way, there’s a lot of resentment from Elizabeth’s character. There were times when we would have these blowout discussions on set among Alex, myself and Elizabeth about what we felt the scene needed to be in the context of the arc of our characters. MTV : Alex Kurtzman has said in the past how important this movie was to him. Was there a sense of that on the set? Pine : From what Alex told me, this is a very important story that was very important for him to tell, and we both bonded over the fact that our careers had taken a particular path toward making larger films, while in our beginnings, we both thought we’d be making different kinds of films. It was nice to finally make one that we both really, really had a lot of investment in. Not that I don’t have investment in the films I do now — I’m saying it was nice to do something that we always wanted to make. I think it is exciting that Alex gets to show his fans that he is capable of doing a different kind of film entirely. The Band Drummer Levon Helm In Final Stages of Cancer Battle

‘Thank you fans and music lovers who have made his life so filled with joy and celebration,’ reads a message on Helm’s website. By Gil Kaufman Levon Helm Photo: Getty Images Levon Helm, former drummer for Rock and Roll Hall of Fame group the Band, announced on Tuesday that he is in the final stages of a long-running battle with cancer. Helm, 71, whose signature Southern drawl helped make iconic songs such as “The Weight,” “Up on Cripple Creek” and “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down” rock classics, was first diagnosed with cancer in 1998. “Levon is in the final stages of his battle with cancer. Please send your prayers and love to him as he makes his way through this part of his journey,” read a note from his daughter Amy and wife Sandy . “Thank you fans and music lovers who have made his life so filled with joy and celebration … he has loved nothing more than to play, to fill the room up with music, lay down the back beat, and make the people dance! He did it every time he took the stage…
” After his initial diagnosis with throat cancer, Helm struggled to regain his voice and pay spiraling medical bills. Though he initially lost his ability to sing, Helm continued to play drums, mandolin and harmonica alongside daughter Amy in a series of shows at his Woodstock, New York, studios called the Midnight Ramble. Since 2004, the shows have grown in legend, attracting everyone from Elvis Costello and Norah Jones to My Morning Jacket, Steve Earle and Emmylou Harris. The weekly concerts attracted sold-out audiences that not only helped pay the bills, but also kick-started Helm’s recording career and produced the back-to-back Grammy-winning albums Dirt Farmer and Electric Dirt . Born on May 26, 1940, Helm grew up in a musical home and was plucked by rocker Ronnie Hawkins to join his band in 1957. It was during his stint with Hawkins that he was united with four other musicians who would make up the core of the Band: Richard Manuel, Rick Danko, Robbie Robertson and Garth Hudson. They eventually split with Hawkins and in 1965 hooked up with Bob Dylan to help the folk icon transition into an electric sound. The Band went on to release a string of rock classics and broke up in 1976 after an all-star Thanksgiving concert at the Winterland ballroom in San Francisco that was filmed by Martin Scorsese and released as “The Last Waltz.” Related Artists The Band
