Singer gave a spirited performance of “Give Your Heart a Break” before accepting her award. By Jocelyn Vena Demi Lovato performs at the 2012 People’s Choice Awards Photo: Getty Images Demi Lovato certainly proved she was Unbroken when she took the stage at the 2012 People’s Choice Awards on Wednesday night (January 11). The former Disney princess dazzled the room with a spirited rendition of her song “Give Your Heart a Break.” In a bright red dress (with matching red hair), she took the stage and belted out her Unbroken track. Instead of going flashy and over the top, the singer let the song rule the performance and kept it simple, taking the stage with just her band. After her performance, she accepted the award for Favorite Pop Artist and had many kind words for the fans who helped her beat out the likes of Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Rihanna and Beyonc
‘I’d say we’re maybe about 40 percent done,’ Luda tells Billboard about his Ludaversal. By Rob Markman Ludacris Photo: Dave Kotinsky/ Getty Images Are you ready for another Ludacris album? It’s been two years since ‘Cris dropped his last album, Battle of the Sexes, and the Atlanta MC estimates that his next one will hit stores this spring. “I get the beats together and I put out my ideas, so I’d say we’re maybe about 40 percent done,” the rapper told Billboard of his upcoming eighth LP, Ludaversal, which he anticipates will be out around May with a first single dropping in March. Luda, who dropped his 1.21 Gigawatts mixtape in November, also revealed one big-time guest on the LP. ” Usher is one person that I’ve already worked with,” he said. “In terms of other artists, you can say that there’s going to be a lot of surprises on here.” The pair already have a few collaborations under their belt. Who can forget Usher’s inescapable smash “Yeah!” from his 2004 Confessions album? The two also hooked up on Lil Jon’s “Lovers and Friends” in the same year and then again two years ago on Usher’s “She Don’t Know.” As far as what the two have cooked up for Ludaversal, fans will just have to wait and see. Throughout his career, Luda has shown a ton of versatility. An undeniable hitmaker, at times the nimble-tongued lyricist has been comical (2001’s “Area Codes” and 2004’s “Number One Spot”) and in other instances delivered healthy amounts of substance (2006’s “Runaway Love” and 2008’s “Do the Right Thing”). For Ludaversal, he will get a little personal. “It’s been a minute since I’ve been away from music, and there is just so much to talk about,” he said. “So [the album] is mostly about my personal life, my travels, my experiences, rumors, gossip — you know, everything coming together in one.” What are your expectations for Ludacris’ new album? The U.K. actor is Middle-earth’s most badass dwarf and One to Watch in 2012. By Kevin P. Sullivan Richard Armitage in “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” Photo: New Line Productions This winter, director Peter Jackson will deliver the long-awaited return to Middle-earth. “The Hobbit,” which will unfold across two films, begins with “An Unexpected Journey,” as Bilbo Baggins leaves to win back gold stolen from his companions. But these are not just any friends. Bilbo is accompanied by 13 dwarves, each with a larger-than-life personality. The leader of these adventurers, Thorin, will be played by Richard Armitage , who made a brief appearance in “Captain America: The First Avenger,” but will get his biggest Stateside break in “The Hobbit.” The British actor played a key role in last month’s trailer and will soon join the illustrious ranks of Tolkien alumni, alongside Viggo Mortensen, Sean Bean and Orlando Bloom. We spoke with Armitage about traveling to Middle-earth, the difficulty of working under pounds of makeup and leading a band of treasure-seeking dwarves. MTV : Congratulations on being named to MTV’s Ones to Watch! Richard Armitage : Thank you very much! MTV : Where are you currently in the filming schedule? Armitage : We just finished up our second block, so we start again at the end of January, and then we go — we think it’s the end of July. Then there’s a bit more in 2013, we reckon. MTV : What’s it like being on a single project for so long? Armitage : It’s really weird because when we started it was just this enormous mountain to climb, but actually, it’s going so fast. I think we’ve gotten to the halfway point now. It’s been really intense but so exciting. We literally just finished our location shoot that we’ve been out on the road seeing most of New Zealand. It’s been the best thing I’ve ever worked on in my life, by far. MTV : Is it easy to forget you’re acting? Do you get lost in the world the production creates? Armitage : The soundstages they made in Wellington, [New Zealand], most of the time it doesn’t feel like we’ve been working on a set. Even when there’s a green screen there, Peter’s vision of it is so clear and his description of it is so clear. The pre-production CGI that they’ve already created really fires up your imagination. That was the shoot we started with. On location, it’s just theirs to program these amazing images into your head, so we can now take them back into the studio. MTV : Will it be hard to leave behind once you’ve wrapped? Armitage : It don’t think it will be possible to leave it behind me. I think this is one of those characters that always stay with you because you spend so much time with him and it’s such a transformation. I’m in the character every day, and I’ve become so familiar with him. I sort of know how he thinks. I feel really close to the character, and he will continue beyond this job , [ spoiler ahead ] even though, he dies at the end of the movie. I think he is a fascinating character. I will probably wake up in six years’ time and be inspired to think about him again. It’s really exciting. MTV : How did your previous knowledge of the story change how you approached Thorin? Armitage : I read it quite a few times when I was young. I think going back to it as an adult is really interesting because it is a book that was, I think, was written for Tolkien’s children, but when you’re creating a piece on this scale, you have to really visualize it for a much broader audience. I think that’s the beauty of Tolkien. He does create very well-rounded, quite dangerous characters to play his protagonists. He risks scaring kids. He’s the original fantasy creator, and I think you have to invest those characters with the same gravity as if you were making a piece for adults. It was interesting coming back to it as an adult, re-reading it again, because it did have a simplicity to it, which I really like. I felt we could take those characters and really develop them beyond the book. MTV : You ended up with middle ground in terms of the amount of makeup. Did you feel lucky? Armitage : It did evolve. We all started with quite an extreme version of ourselves. I think because my character does spend a lot of time onscreen and you really have to understand what he’s going through emotionally, it became clear that if we started make the prosthetic as close to my features as possible but still make him a dwarf, it would be much easier to read the character. He has to go on such a journey, it was really important to do that. I grew my own beard after the first block because I felt that it was restricting my face. The jaw is so connected to emotion that I wanted to have that free. It made such a huge difference. It’s really weird now because I can’t play the character when I haven’t gotten everything on. It’s very hard to rehearse when you’re not in costume, when you haven’t gotten the prosthetics on, but I look in the mirror when it’s all finished and I don’t see it. I can’t see where it starts and where it ends. I just see the character. I’ve never had that before. It’s such a unique experience. It’s a face that doesn’t belong to me. It belongs to WETA workshop and the people that created it. MTV : How was it on set with so many actors playing the dwarves? Armitage : I love it. I absolutely love working as an ensemble member, and we really are an ensemble. There’s great camaraderie among all the guys. There is such a diversity of culture and background. We’re working with a lot of Kiwis, and there’s real mixture of British actors who come from television and theater and film. It’s exactly as the dwarves are. When Thorin assembles the quest, he pulls dwarves from all different places to go on this quest. That’s mirrored in who we are as actors. What are you waiting for? Your must-see movie needs your support. It’s time to show character, poise and heart. Vote for your picks now at MTV Movie Brawl 2012 ! Dedicated volunteers inspire MTV News’ Sway. By Sway Calloway Volunteers in New Hampshire Photo: MTV News MANCHESTER, New Hampshire — After months of buildup, the people of New Hampshire finally came out to cast their vote today. I’ve had a great time over the past 24 hours talking to voters supporting just about every name on the ballot. I met a lot of really cool people and listened to why they voted and why they’ll do it again in November — even if their pick today doesn’t make the cut. I met people who are volunteering for President Obama and walked around the crowded office in downtown Manchester where they are trying to keep Democrats in this notoriously independent state excited about supporting the commander in chief. A lot of them were college kids who are already on the ground making calls from phone banks, waving signs outside polling places and spending their winter break learning how political campaigns work and filling up the office’s “Why Are You In?” wall with their motivation to service. I met one volunteer who came all the way from the U.K. just to support the Obama campaign, and at a rally for former Senator Rick Santorum , I sat down with a young man who drove in from Canada. He can’t vote, but it was important for him to just be here and participate in our political process. I also met a couple of young ladies who were Santorum supporters, including Jordanne Anderson, who shot her first deer the other day and, like me, is also a big-game fisherman — she caught a 160-pound swordfish. She was very, very well-versed when it came to the political process and the candidate she wants to vote for. What struck me about all of them was their passion. Whatever issue it was that drove them to the polls or to drive from three states over to knock on doors, make phone calls and wave signs, they were all in, even if they suspected their candidate wouldn’t end up on top when the polls closed. We had a lot of good times here in Manchester, where I learned once again that the 45 million young voters in this country not only have a voice, they’re ready and eager to use it. I can’t wait to come back next time and stay on this political trail with the Power of 12 and hear what they have to say. You guys rule this generation. MTV is on the scene in New Hampshire! Perry won’t attend People’s Choice Awards but tells fans, ‘I want to thank u all for voting for me, fingers crossed!’ By Jocelyn Vena Katy Perry Photo: C. Flanigan/ FilmMagic Just days after Katy Perry broke her silence for the first time since news of her split from husband Russell Brand, the singer has announced she’ll no longer be attending the People’s Choice Awards on Wednesday in Los Angeles. “Unfortunately I will not be able to attend the People’s Choice Awards,” she tweeted on Monday (January 9) about her previously scheduled appearance. “I want to thank u all for voting for me, fingers crossed! #KATYCATS.” The singer is up for seven awards at the show, including Favorite Female Artist, Favorite Pop Artist and Song of the Year for her Kanye West-assisted “E.T.” A week after Brand filed for divorce from his pop-star wife of 14 months, Perry used the social-networking site to thank her fans for sticking by her during this trying personal time — without directly confirming the split. “I am so grateful for all the love and support I’ve had from people around the world,” she wrote. “You guys have made my heart happy again.” In another tweet, she addressed the tabloid chatter that has been swirling since news of the split hit the Web on December 30. “Concerning the gossip, I want to be clear that NO ONE speaks for me,” she said, “Not a blog, magazine, ‘close sources’ or my family.” Perry’s still scheduled to make two appearances on her California Dreams Tour later this month, one on January 19 in Jakarta, Indonesia, and another on January 22 in the Philippines, according to her website. With the PCA appearance canceled, Perry’s next awards-show appearance could take place February 12 at the Grammys, where she’s up for Record of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance for “Firework.” What do you think of Katy canceling her appearance at the awards show? Word on the street is Trina has some big thangs poppin’… and we’re not just talking about tax ads . No longer on Slip’N’Slide Records, Miami’s Diamond Princess has been in the lab cooking up new music, this time with more of a pop-techno vibe and she’s also got a new look to accompany her new sound, having teamed up with none other than Jay-Z’s famed stylist June Ambrose. Looks like all that greenery may have finally caught up to the Doggfather . Snoop Dogg might have to find something else to do for a little while. On Saturday, Jan. 7 Snoop Dogg was arrested by U.S. Border Patrol agents and detained after agents inspected his tour bus along a highway in Sierra Blanca, Texas after detecting “the odor of marijuana emitting from the inside of the vehicle” during a routine border patrol check. A drug dog sniffed to find “a prescription bottle containing rolled marijuana cigarettes” and “two other containers containing marijuana weighing in all total of 0.130 lbs.” (Ironically enough, Snoop’s friend and collaborator, fellow cannabis enthusiast Willie Nelson was busted for marijuana possession in the same region in 2010.) According to a statement from the Hudspeth County Sheriff’s office, Snoop Dogg, whose real name is Calvin Broadus, “freely admitted that the marijuana belonged to him and he was placed under arrest by U.S. Border Patrol agents and detained.” The rapper was “cited for possession of drug paraphernalia, given notification of court appearance on/or before January 20, 2012 and released.” We’d thought Snoop had a lifetime pass for smoking weed. Who’d wanna arrest him for getting his roll on. It’s damn near legal anyway. We’re sure he’ll find a way out of jail time like all celebrities that get caught with the sticky. Source More On Bossip!
