Getting overpriced popcorn is a part of the experience of going to a movie. And even though the popcorn often looks like it’s been sitting there for days, the butter is going to clog your arteries, and the salt is going to raise your blood pressure, you still gotta have it! According to the University of Southern California , people can’t help themselves from eating popcorn. And apparently it doesn’t matter if the popcorn is fresh or stale because it’s a habit for most of us to have it, and the people that run movie theaters know this. Someone has finally told Kim Kardashian about herself and luckily for us it’s someone who knows her very well! Brother Rob Kardashian went in on Kim for the way she treated hotel staff. “You complained right in front of the people that work so hard to pick flowers and put them on your bed and your room to make it nice and you’re saying ‘ew’, you’re very disrespectful to say that in front of somebody, dad raised you better than that, mom raised you better than that, Bruce raised you better than that!” Kris “I’m a doof” Humphries tried to come to the rescue but things just got worst. “I think you’re a whore and you should shut up,” Rob told his sister Kim. “I think there are several rappers that are in the closet and gay, and see those are the type of gay people that … the only type of gay people that I have a problem with,” said Game. “I don’t have a problem with gay people. Like, Beyoncé should’ve said, ‘Who run the world? Gays,’ because they’re everywhere and rightfully so. Do you. It’s a free country. Be gay, you can do that. Game don’t have a problem with gay people.” Those are some pretty bold statements. Any suggestions as to who he’s talking about? “Game has a problem with people that are pretending not to be gay and are gay because the number one issue with that is that you could be fooling somebody and you could give them AIDS and they can die and so that in the closet s—t is real scary. So, we’ve got to get into the real seriousness of it and it’s just not fair to other people,” he said. “If you gay, just say you gay. Be gay and be proud.” I have to agree with Game here. It’s not safe just to be running around living a lie so that you may live comfortably while putting other people in danger.
Material Girl’s second directorial effort finds few early supporters at the film fest. By Eric Ditzian Madonna attends the “W.E.” premiere during the 68th Venice Film Festival Photo: Getty Images The Venice Film Festival turned into something of a feeding frenzy on Thursday, as critics practically fell over one another in an effort to drum up the harshest disses and most damning, damaging turns-of-phrase about Madonna’s second directorial effort, “W.E.” Their cackles of laughter echoed across the pond the next day, as the Weinstein Company attempted some damage control and a handful of defenders staked out claims that the film had been unjustly dismissed. Those supporters pointed to the lush visual landscape Madonna had captured and the touching love story she’d brought to life. But the critics weren’t having any of it. They slammed the garbled narrative structure, cheesy dialogue and directorial trickery that seemed to serve no other purpose than Madonna’s look-at-me self-servitude. Read on for those critiques and more. The Story ” ‘W.E. is rather better than expected; it’s bold, confident and not without amusing moments. Still, it’s undeniably a strange concoction. Madonna (who also co-scripted with [Alek] Keshishian) has fashioned a split-level story of two couples: the Windsors, and the growing attraction between Wally Winthrop (Abbie Cornish), a contemporary Manhattan woman, and Evgeni (Oscar Isaac), a handsome Russian working security at Sotheby’s. Wally, married to an eminent shrink who isn’t above slapping her around, desperately wants children. (He doesn’t.) Worse, she has inherited her mother’s and grandmother’s obsession with the Windsors (Andrea Riseborough, James d’Arcy) and doggedly researches their lives, seeking clues about how to live her own. In extreme moments, Mrs. Simpson actually appears to her.” — David Gritten, The Telegraph The Direction “What an extraordinarily silly, preening, fatally mishandled film this is. It may even surpass 2008’s ‘Filth and Wisdom,’ Madonna’s calamitous first outing as a filmmaker. Her direction is so all over the shop that it barely qualifies as direction at all. ‘W.E.’ gives us slo-mo and jump cuts and a crawling crane shot up a tree in Balmoral, but they are all just tricks without a purpose. For her big directorial flourish, Madonna has Wallis bound onstage to dance with a Masai tribesman while Pretty Vacant blares on the soundtrack. But why? What point is she making?” — Xan Brooks, The Guardian The Writing “The script is the first problem. Co-written with Alek Keshishian, it’s laden with clich
Car chases and ‘Precious’ star Gabourey Sidibe could be on tap for upcoming clip. By Gil Kaufman Foster The People’s Mark Foster Photo: MTV News Foster the People shot out of the box a few months ago with their summer smash “Pumped Up Kicks.” The video for the song is lo-fi to be sure: some live footage of the New Wave-y trio performing mixed in with some wacky road-trip clips, camera-mugging and other goofball antics. It was a modest launch but the irresistible song has continued to gain traction since it came out in February and it is now firmly in the #2 slot on the iTunes singles chart. With a little more scratch and recognition to their name, they recently followed with the big-budget-looking, apocalyptic “Mad Max”-inspired video for “Helena Beat.” And now, according to lead singer Mark Foster, they’re going really big for their next trick. “We’ve got a couple videos shot already that are going to be coming out soon,” Foster told us on the black carpet at the 2011 VMAs . “We’re shooting a new one in 3-D, actually in a week or two for ‘Don’t Stop.’ It’s going to involve a car chase and hopefully [‘Precious’] star Gabourey Sidibe, if we can get her to be in it.” In the meantime, after killing it at big summer festivals like Coachella and Lollapalooza — not to mention earning two VMA nods for Best New Artist and Best Rock Video — the trio will be hitting the road hard for the rest of 2011. They’ll be playing U.S. dates through the end of the month, and then take things overseas for European gigs through November. (A spokesperson for the band’s label could not be reached for comment at press time on when the “Don’t Stop” video is slated for release.) Are you excited to see FTP’s next video? With the 20th anniversary of Nirvana’s Nevermind around the corner, today’s biggest acts recall 1991’s other classic albums. By James Montgomery Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Blood Sugar Sex Magik Photo: Warner Bros. In a few short weeks, Nirvana’s epochal Nevermind album turns 20, a milestone that will be marked with much coverage, celebration and consternation in the media — and understandably so. After all, it was a game-changer in every sense of the term, the kind of album that brought about seismic shifts in music, fashion and culture in general, one that defined a generation and, as such, deserves to be mythologized. And, in the coming weeks, we suspect you’ll see no shortage of stories that do just that. While Nevermind casts an indelibly lengthy shadow, it bears mention that there were no shortage of other magical, massive and equally mythological albums that hit stores in 1991 — from mega-platinum rock blockbusters to best-kept indie secrets, and just about everything in between — classics that, had Nirvana never broken through, would probably be getting the royal treatment right now. In 1991, rock truly rocked, so, in celebration of that fact, we’ve asked some of today’s biggest bands to discuss their favorite albums from that rather amazing year. On Wednesday, we heard from Death Cab for Cutie and Blink-182 ; now, Skrillex and Foster the People share their faves. Don’t worry, we’ll give Nevermind its due — but right now, we’re paying tribute to 1991’s other indispensible albums, in the words of their biggest fans. Metallica, The Black Album The one where “old” Metallica ended and “new” Metallica began — at least according to the die-hards — the band’s fifth studio album (it’s technically self-titled, though, come on, who doesn’t call it The Black Album ?) saw them drifting away from their slash-and-burn thrash-metal past into a new, decidedly fuller phase, one fleshed out with orchestral flourishes and an increased focus on the booming rhythm section of Jason Newstead and Lars Ulrich. Though its recording was plagued by battles with producer Bob Rock, The Black Album features the band’s most iconic songs — “Enter Sandman,” “The Unforgiven,” “Nothing Else Matters,” etc. — and remains their best-selling to date, moving a staggering 22 million copies worldwide. Love it or hate it, you can’t deny its impact, both on the band and the next two decades of hard rock. As Remembered by Skrillex : “Man, The Black Album was me sitting in my room when I was 9 years old, trying to learn all the songs on guitar. That was, for me, rocking out, no reservations, like I was on the stage. And learning the ‘Holier Than Thou’ riff was, like, the biggest achievement, because it’s so hard. Every record on that album is so amazing. … Obviously, ‘Enter Sandman,’ ‘Wherever I May Roam’ … that was the first Metallica song I learned, after ‘Enter Sandman.’ I love The Black Album. It’s perfect; it’s a masterpiece in every way, from front to back, and it’s inspired me, consciously or subconsciously, because I had such a connection to it.” Red Hot Chili Peppers, Blood Sugar Sex Magik One of the most important, celebrated albums of the ’90s alt-rock explosion, Blood Sugar saw the Chili Peppers grow up, get deep and, of course, become hugely famous. While songs like “Give It Away” and “Suck My Kiss” still bobbed and weaved with the band’s visceral energy, it was on tracks like the massive “Under the Bridge” and “Breaking the Girl” where they slowed things down and found their biggest commercial successes. Recorded by producer Rick Rubin in a supposedly haunted mansion in Laurel Canyon, its creation has become the stuff of rock legend, and though the Peppers would subsequently sag beneath its success (guitarist John Frusciante, unable to cope with his sudden fame, quit the band mid-tour) Blood Sugar still stands as perhaps the finest accomplishment of their 28-year career. It would be nearly four years before they released a follow-up, though, given the album’s hugely influential status, you really couldn’t blame them. As Remembered by Mark Pontius, Foster the People : “My favorite record of 1991, and I think the only reason I got this record was my sister had it, and she’s older than me, so it just sort of fell into my lap, is Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Blood Sugar Sex Magik. I think I have to credit that record [for teaching me] a lot of my drumming skills. I loved playing their records, and that one always stuck out to me. It had so much grit, and that was rock and roll at that time of my life.” What is your favorite 1991 rock album? Let us know in the comments below! ‘I was the last voice to be heard on the album,’ Busta Rhymes tells MTV News of Lil Wayne’s latest. By Rob Markman Busta Rhymes Photo: MTV News LOS ANGELES — With all of his versatility, Lil Wayne puts his range on display on Tha Carter IV . Songs like the acoustic-R&B “How to Love” and the John Legend-laced “So Special” show Weezy’s penchant for crafting female-friendly radio hits, while tracks like “6 Foot 7 Foot” and “John” revolve around Tunechi’s rap roots. The album’s “Intro,” “Interlude” and “Outro” also celebrate rapping for rapping’s sake. On the “Intro,” Wayne raps solo over a pounding, bottom-heavy beat supplied by newcomer Willy Will. Halfway through the album, Missouri MC Tech N9ne and Outkast spitter Andre 3000 appear atop the same instrumental on the C4 “Interlude.” Finally, on the LP’s “Outro,” Bun B, Nas, Shyne and Busta Rhymes take their turns over that beat. As standalone cuts, the three tracks feature some pretty aggressive rap bars, but we couldn’t help but notice that if Wayne were to string them together into one track, it might have been one of rap’s most star-studded posse cuts. “I actually close out Tha Carter IV. I’m the last voice you hear on Tha Carter IV, ” Busta Rhymes pointed out to MTV News on the 2011 VMA , black carpet. “It’s special because I didn’t know that’s what [Wayne] was gonna do with it.” With his rapid-fire verse, Busta boasts of his “uncompetewitable” rhyme style before toasting to Weezy by rhyming, “OK, enough of that, now I’m out the door/ Tunechi, thanks for giving us a whole ‘nother classic with Tha Carter IV. ” “When we did the joint, he didn’t really tell us how he was gonna put it together. All I knew was that when it was done, it was me, Bun B, Nas and Shyne, and I was the last voice to be heard on the album, so I feel honored for that,” Busta said. Although he had yet to hear the completed version of C4, Bussa Bus was excited for his friend and frequent collaborator, Wayne. “I didn’t really get to hear it in its entirety yet, but I hope that everybody understands that that man put his foot in this album,” he said. “From what I did hear, being in the studio with him, he goin’ ape sh– on it.” Share your reviews of Tha Carter IV in the comments below! Unlikely duo will celebrate ‘Born Villain’ short film with book signing and screening Thursday in L.A. By Kara Warner with reporting by Josh Horowitz Marilyn Manson, Narcissister and Shia LaBeouf attend the “Born Villain” screening in Los Angeles on August 29 Photo: Christopher Polk/Getty Images File this story under the most surprising of pairings: “Transformers” superstar Shia LaBeouf and Marilyn Manson have teamed up for Manson’s new music video, “Born Villain.” So how did these two artists come together? Well, they met at a Kills concert, where LaBeouf, a longtime Manson fan, casually approached the “Beautiful People” singer and struck up a conversation that sparked a genuine friendship. “Marilyn Manson to me is an indelible figure,” LaBeouf told MTV New, speaking exclusively about the collaboration for the first time. “He’s a big deal to me, and in my childhood, I don’t know of a scarier figure in art. He, in my teenage years, was the scariest thing in the world, so part of me has always been intrigued.” LaBeouf told Manson that he would love to direct his next video and showed him his previous work, Cage’s “Maniac” clip , as proof that he knows what he’s doing behind the camera. “I played ‘Maniac’ for [Manson], and he freaked the f— out,” LaBeouf recalled. “Manson goes crazy. Manson’s like, ‘I want you to do my video.’ ” The two then began prep work on “Born Villain,” which draws heavily from very intense, graphic imagery, specifically a famous French surrealist short film, Shakespeare and theology. “The song has all these references to ‘Macbeth’ and all this Shakespeare and heavy theology, so we tried to make Manson’s ‘Un Chien Andalou’ macabre ‘Macbeth’ — that’s sort of what that became.” To celebrate the LaBeouf-directed video, which is much more short film than standard clip, LaBeouf and Manson will be appearing together at a one-time-only book signing and screening Thursday at Hennessey + Ingalls bookstore in Los Angeles from 8 to 10 p.m. The 18-and-up event is private and limited to 150 attendees on a first-come, first-served basis. In order to receive tickets, those who wish to attend must purchase the limited-edition “Born Villain” photo book at the Hennessey + Ingalls website , which also comes with a copy of the short film. Unsurprisingly, the imagery in the video is very graphic and very adult. Those who only know LaBeouf from his clean-cut film roles will likely be shocked by this directorial effort, but LaBeouf isn’t worried about those reactions. “This, for me, this is a really cool diversion for me when I’m not making a movie,” LaBeouf explained. “It gives me an opportunity to work with musicians I admire who I would otherwise never get to work with in any other capacity. I really have a fun time doing it. It allows me to be creative in another art form and work with heroes. “I also think there are fans of mine who aren’t fans of Manson’s and vice versa; that’s why I think our collaboration is interesting. I don’t really see it on paper,” he continued. “I don’t see fans of mine who went to see ‘Holes’ when they were 12 loving this. I don’t think my audience is the only thing I should exercise my artistic muscle for. I don’t necessarily always do things for the audience; this is one of those. “I love Marilyn,” LaBeouf said. “Manson is like a brother to me now. He’s a real sweet dude, a real close friend.” Related Artists Marilyn Manson
