Source: Sean Drakes / Getty When I found out that I was going to Kerby Jean-Raymond’s Pyer Moss show, I couldn’t feel my legs for a minute and it felt like the room was spinning around me at 100 mph. Granted, I had been to one of the designer’s shows a few seasons ago and had loved every single second of it, but this time, it was extremely different. In just two short years, Kerby has gone from a Black designer to watch to the designer of the moment, and dare I say, a designer of the century. He’s the type of public figure that urban kids can quickly identify, among the Off-Whites and Balenciagas splattered on every streetwear roundup. He’s the fashion designer whose clothing is clean and respectable — he’s not really gimmicky or peacocky just for the sake of show, but his clothes pack a bunch and are well-tailored. He’s the Black designer who straddles this fence between resources and talent, one minute discussing in magazine spreads how he received death threats for his Spring ‘16 show, and then the next minute taking out Kings Theater to well over a thousand spectators as the entire fashion world stopped for a moment in time. Attempting to write about the Pyer Moss S/S 2020 Collection feels like trying to explain what water tastes like to the malnourished, or what love feels like to one who has only known trauma. I suppose I should also point out that other than the extraordinary rise in Kerby’s career over the past few years, the other reason why the invitation to his show was downright unbelievable to me was because I wasn’t being asked to attend as press. I was simply being asked to attend on my own accord. Working press during NYFW is a marathon, indeed, but it’s also exhausting as hell. Fighting to get quotes, to snap photos, to ensure you’ve received all the assets you need before jet-setting off to the next show or to your laptop to sit down and write, write, write, can feel emotionally and spiritually draining. There were moments throughout the season I had to work press for shows, and that was totally fine: Building TheBlondeMisfit.com has been the act and labor of love that I have sought to create space in, but being Black media and press is also a who’s who game. Sometimes you don’t get the quote, or you don’t get the angle. Sometimes the larger outlet does steal your material and you’re not acknowledged, or everyone else’s team of five has the same responsibilities as your team of one. So to know that for one night, the show of my dreams only asked for me to sit back and enjoy without the added responsibility of work afterwards? I was moved, and after seeing the show, I was thankful. Source: Sean Drakes / Getty There are a lot of show reviews on Pyer Moss’s latest collection, and honestly, I stand by them all. There’s interviews, backstage looks, features, and so much more. This third collection focused on the contributions of Sister Rosetta Tharpe, also known as the Black woman who invented Rock’N’Roll. With jewelry done by Johnny Nelson, an entire choir named “The Pyer Moss Tabernacle Drip Choir Drenched in The Blood,” parts of design by Christopher John Rogers, and more, the show was not just Black. It was undeniably Black. The choir sang hits from influential Black women in music, from Lil’ Kim to Tina Turner, as beautifully dripped clothing walked the runway. We saw tailored suits, pleated asymmetric skirting, plunging necklines, and evening wear ready for the red carpet. We saw the color block moto jackets in partnership with Sean John, and the iconic “Vote or Die” T-shirt re-emerge in today’s troubling political climate. But throughout the show, I couldn’t help but find myself putting the phone down in an attempt to just enjoy this moment — it wasn’t the Black models, or the Black clothing, or the Black choir, or the thousand people filled into this theater for this Black man and his team. It was the message of what fashion can be and what it should be. View this post on Instagram At @pyermoss last night. I never thought I could belong in fashion, and I still don't think that I do. I'm hypercritical of myself and my talents, and I oftentimes wonder if I'm taking on too much and if I will fumble the bag. But I have had so many people, family, friends, and you all, who have loved me from near and far, who have poured into me and have affirmed me in this space. To know that wherever I plant my seed, it blossoms. Whatever I touch, it gets to grow. That the work I've put in hasn't gone unseen, and that I have little angels all around me working those overtime hours. This is because I have given God all of my gifts, and have asked Him to order my steps and my anointing. I've asked Him to show people that TheBlondeMisfit isn't on man's timing, but on God's. HE will put you in the presence of great men and women, and to be in the presence of the impact that @kerbito brought to fashion literally made me cry. It is divine orchestration that proves I was meant to be there. That I am doing fine and that God is making a way. I may not always know what's on the other side of fear, but I know who holds the keys. It was an honor to wear THREE black designers last night to the most undeniably groundbreaking, thought-provoking, memorizing, and Blackest show I have ever seen. Thank You Kerby for letting God use you as a vessel for the people, and for reminding me how powerful purpose truly is. A post shared by Jamé Jackson (@theblondemisfit) on Sep 9, 2019 at 11:13am PDT Friends and family know I believe I’m a fashion ‘outsider’, thus the ‘misfit’ misnomer. Even as I learn and meet more people, take up more space, and fill more rooms, I learn that the collective thought of fashion has changed over the years, and that there are still misunderstood misfits in fashion. There are still people who are thinking in colors, and shapes, and hues, whereas the majority are still thinking about what they had for breakfast that morning. As the models did their final walk and the choir belted out a gospel song that’s lyrics sought for God to make one over again, tears streamed my face as I realized I was sitting in on a moment of history. A reclamation of Black women and our bodies and our narratives, not just in fashion, but in history, was taking place right on the stage in the presence of a multicultural and multidimensional crowd. I felt the spirit in the theater, the same spirit I feel on Sunday mornings when I head to church and reconcile that God’s gotten me through another week, or the same spirit I feel when I give honor and praise in the wee hours in the morning when I know I am spiritually under attack. It’s the same spirit I know my mommy and grandmommy felt walking the floorboards as they prayed to a Creator to make a way out of no way, and surely, He always did. I felt God’s face shine upon us and confirm that we, as a people, would be alright. But more importantly, I saw what divine manifestation can look like for another when you walk in purpose. That is what is missing from these show reviews I’ve been reading, who have accurately discussed the beauty of the clothing, or the choir, or the resounding speech that started the show. The show reviews that probably gave you the backstory of how droves of people were standing outside the Theater for blocks and blocks, hundreds, if not thousands of people there just to see if they could buy a ticket. I’m sure you’ve read the reviews of people discussing the power and the magnitude of Kerby’s show, some even calling it his “church” and what’s next in fashion. But walking away, I saw the purpose of something so much more than clothing or a review. Sunday night is a hope for anyone out there with a dream and a prayer, with faith the size of a mustard seed, that if it’s of God, He can truly change the game with your gifts. He can change the industry with your talents. The clothes and the music and celebrity sightings are all gravy to the entré, which brings us back to center and makes us question for the rest of our lives are we operating in purpose or are we solely skating by. I want to thank Kerby for relighting a fire within me and all who attended. For honoring the Black women who have come before, and will undoubtedly come after us. And for all of those who understand now more than ever we can reclaim that power and use it to channel true change in the industry. I never want that feeling I felt to die, nor the feeling that being an ‘outsider’ is wrong when God is using your vision for a larger purpose. The world stopped for Kerby, they can stop for us as well. There was trouble in romantic paradise on Monday night’s episode of Bachelor in Paradise. Demi Burnett — who made headlines this season by announcing she was bisexual and then choosing to stay with girlfriend Kristian Haggerty instead of fellow suitor Derek Peth — took issue with her same-sex lover on the latest installment. She accused Kristian of getting a little too close to her costars. Burnett struggled when she took note what she interpreted as Kristian flirting with other women in the cast. (Editor’s Note: Kristian was simply brought to Mexico by Chris Harrison and company to further Demi’s storyline… and she has since just stuck around.) Demi explained that she was not comfortable with all this affection, in part because she was still adjusting to being out of the closet. How did Kristian react to the couple’s first quasi fight of their relationship? By confronting Demi about it during a date, explaining that she used touch to show her friends she cared about them and never intended give off romantic vibes. “It doesn’t change how I feel about you,” she assured Burnett. Demi did her best to understand, but also opened up about her ongoing internal debate. “I feel like I’m not giving her enough, but I’m also struggling with my inner battle of being worried about how I’m making other people feel, which shouldn’t matter, but it does,” Demi said. “I hate that my brain works that way but I’m just scared. It has everything to do with me being uncomfortable with being gay around people … being gay around all these people who thought I was some straight girl. It’s scary. She continued: I’m getting comfortable with it, but it’s taking me some time. I feel so guilty because I feel bad for it taking time and I want to give her what she needs but I’m still uncomfortable with it because I don’t want people to be like, ‘That’s weird.’ I don’t want people to stare and be like, ‘Oh my God, you’re kissing.’ It’s just stressing me out and I’m trying not to be so concerned about myself and trying to think about her. IN THE BLAKE OF AN EYE… Kristian and Demi overcame this hurdle in their romance, but the same could not be said in the end for Blake and Kristina. “I have allowed myself to think about Kristina as being the mother of my children and as being my wife,” Blake confessed in an on-camera interview. “There’s something undeniable between us. We can’t deny each other anymore. We can’t deny the feelings that we have.” In an aggressive move, Blake then made his own date card for Kristina. And in an honest move, Kristina told Blake the following on their outing: “I don’t think I’ll be able to get where I need to get. I can’t get there if I’m being real. It would’ve been very misleading of me to continue these things. I’m sorry.” Ouch , huh? So much for that whole mother of my children thing, dude. “I did not expect this to go this way,” Blake responded. When Kristina rejoined the group on the beach, she announced that she was leaving Paradise. And then Blake shared the same sentiment with Clay Harbor. “Paradise just isn’t for me,” he told Clay. In the van on his way outta there, Blake wondered if perhaps his Paradise conclusion resulted from the tangled web of love he wove earlier in the season with Kristina, Caelynn, Hannah Goodwin and Tayshia Adams. There was also that whole text message release debacle . “Part of me thinks I deserve this,” Blake said. “This is karma, you know? View Slideshow: Peter Weber as The Bachelor: A Nation Reacts!
While it may be true that Scott Disick didn’t fully appreciate his family before it fell apart, he’s all about family these days. Dating Sofia Richie seems to have made him into a better man and a better father. And no one is more aware of that fact that Kourtney Kardashian. Us Weekly spoke to an inside source about how Kourtney Kardashian really feels about her baby daddy’s very serious romance with Sofia Richie. “Kourtney thinks Sofia brings out the best in Scott,” the insider reveals. While there’s a lot to be said about whether women should be responsible for a man’s behavior … we have to say that she’s right on the money. “And,” the source shares, Kourtney “is happy for them.” Considering that she has every right to be resentful that he couldn’t get his act together when they were together, that’s very gracious of her. “Kourtney and Sofia share a common background and lifestyle,” the insider observes. “And,” the source adds. “Sofia is easy to get along with.” That is great to hear, though unsurprising. Aside from the people she dates, she’s never really at the center of much drama. The insider elaborates, saying that Sofia is easy-going “and is a normal girl.” Right, just a normal world-famous young model whose dad is Lionel Richie. Normal. “Everything is positive with Sofia and Kourtney right now,” the source continues. That is great to hear. “The family is in a really good place right now,” the insider observes. It can be difficult to reenact the lyrics to Gwen Stefani’s “Cool,” but Kourtney is managing it. “And,” she source divulges. “Wveryone views Sofia as being part of the family.” With an insular group like the Kardashians, that is no easy feat. But apparently Sofia is just another cog in the Kardashian machine these days. “Sofia is integrated into their lives,” the insider explains. Getting along with Kourtney and with the kids is a huge part of how that has worked out. “And,” the source reports. “They’re closer than ever before.” Modern families can be very complicated (so could not-so-modern families be, by the way). When you make it work, it works. The first priority, of course, are Kourtney and Scott’s three kids — Mason, Penelope, and Reign. “Kourtney and Scott are coparenting in a great way,” the insider praises. “Scott and Kourtney realize it looks weird from an outside perspective,” the source acknwoledges. “That they have stayed so close as exes. “But,” the insdier points out. “It works for them.” It certainly seems to be. And the addition of Sofia seems to have, if anything, calmed the waters instead of making things worse. The report also goes to great pains to shut down rumors that Kourtney has mixed feelings about how well Scott and Sofia work together. “Any rumors about Kourtney thinking it’s ‘bittersweet’ …” the source begins. The insider continues: “that Scott has been able to be the partner to Sofia that he wasn’t able to be for Kourtney.” The source concludes by strongly affirming that these “are strictly rumors.” Feelings are complicabed, but it is 100% possible to get over your ex while interacting with them every single day. And how could Kourtney not feel happy that the situation is the best that it could be for her three children? View Slideshow: Kourtney Kardashian Accused of Promoting Incest with Creepy New Photo
Source: Becher/WENN.com / WENN At 79 years old, Tina Turner is as direct as she wants to be with useful testimony about her life. The rock queen recently did an interview with The New York Times and although she endured a hectic life, she’s now just as carefree as ever. She has a musical about her life headed to Broadway, she’s married to music producer Erwin Bach , and she’s enjoying the fruits of her labor with 10 years of retirement. “I don’t necessarily want to be a ‘strong’ person,’” she told the Times . “I had a terrible life. I just kept going. You just keep going, and you hope that something will come.” Ms. Turner then gestures to her extravagant home in Switzerland, adding, “This came.” Spoken like a true legend. Turner also spoke about her notoriously abusive relationship with the late Ike Turner, shedding insight on how forgiveness manifests for different people. “I don’t know if I could ever forgive all that Ike ever did to me,” Turner said. Then she added, “Ike’s dead. So we don’t have to worry about him.” There you have it. Along with her tips on resilience, Turner also gave tips on just relaxing and doing nothing. Although she had great moments during her 50 years of performing, Turner is enjoying retirement and has no plans to return as a music artist. “I don’t sing. I don’t dance. I don’t dress up,” she said. After a life of pleasing other people, Ms. Turner has no qualms about living a little selfishly in her soon-to-be 80s. “I was just tired of singing and making everybody happy,” she said. “That’s all I’d ever done in my life.” The upcoming Broadway musical, Tina: The Tina Turner Musical, first made its debut in London before coming to the U.S., according to Playbill. Actress Adrienne Warren will reprise the title role and she’ll be joined by Daniel J. Watts as Ike Turner. Acclaimed playwright Katori Hall wrote the book for the show. “Tina is such a powerful being—beyond an icon,” Hall told the cast on their first day of rehearsal. “[Tina] always said she wanted to use the poison that she had to take in her life in order to create medicine for others. I want you guys in this rehearsal to embrace the responsibility. The responsibility of telling this story that is going to transform people.” Tina will explore Ms. Turner’s life from Nutbush, Tennessee to international fame. Performances will start on October 12 at the Lunt-Fortanne Theatre and opening night is November 7.
Source: Victor VIRGILE / Getty Let me start by saying Christian Siriano is an ally for the culture. He’s always leaned into dressing Black Hollywood, whether it was coming to the rescue of Leslie Jones who couldn’t find a designer to dress her on the red carpet, or stylishly shaping the curves (and even placing her on the runway) of Danielle Brooks . At the Orange Is The New Black season finale, many of the women were wearing designs by Siriano. While we praise diversity in fashion , we still have a long way to go. It shouldn’t be a headline that a designer is dressing a curvy or tall Black woman. However, his efforts, have helped to push diversity in the industry and call out designers who are still designing for the same, monolithic customer. Nevertheless, even allies can make mistakes. Source: Victor VIRGILE / Getty Siriano partnered with TRESemmé for hair looks for his NYFW Spring/Summer 2020 show and while they only brought the product, he brought the inspiration. According to WWD , Sirano showed hairstylists a photo of Gigi Hadid in a braided style and dubbed the look the “Gigi Braid.” And while yes, Hadid may have worn this exact hairstyle, when I think of braids, I do not think of white women. There is nothing wrong with Gigi Hadid wearing a braided hairstyle; however, there is a huge problem in the industry (and media) with Blackness only being desired or adored when placed on white bodies. Braids have a long history going back to Africa. Specific braided styles represented class and even occasions while some braided styles were actually maps to freedom during the slave trade . Source: Victor VIRGILE / Getty By simply dubbing one braided ponytail, which Black women have been wearing since they were kids as the “Gigi Braid” is erasure of a community of people. An erasure of history. Erasure is a form of racism that has been embedded in American culture when it comes to Black people. To not even acknowledge the history of something is to say it doesn’t exist. He could have still called it the ‘Gigi Braid’; however, it should have had some historical context. With a platform as large as his, simply adding that braids are historically from Black culture and natural hairstyles have seen a resurgence on the runway and red carpet, would have educated a mass of people who probably aren’t looking for this information on their own. We’ve already been through this with Bo Derek and her braids. “Bo Derek Braids” are not a thing. Bo Derek is a woman who wore braids, but she did not start or create the braided style. The ‘Bo Derek Braids’ nomenclature occurred after the 1979 movie ‘ 10 ‘. If it seems like one is nit picking, fast forward to almost 40 years later to Kim Kardashian (who whether we like it or not, influences culture), called her braids ‘Bo Derek Braids.’ Mis-education is also a form of erasure. With the CFDA placing diversity as a major importance, it’s imperative to know that it goes beyond throwing more Black models on the runway . Fashion is fantasy so inspiration will be taken from a multitude of places; it’s important to correctly site where said inspiration is derived.
