Nicki Minaj ‘Thrilled’ By #2 Artist And Song Of 2011 Nods

‘U guys always know a good thing! Ha!!!!’ Young Money MC tells MTV News. By Christina Garibaldi Nicki Minaj Photo: Getty Images Nicki Minaj ‘s year was nothing short of amazing. The reigning queen of hip-hop spent 2011 climbing the charts , hitting the road and racking up a slew of awards . All of that helped her secure the #2 spot for her smash single “Super Bass” on MTV’s Best Songs of 2011 rankings and landed her at #2 on our list of the Best Artists of the year. “Thanks MTV!!!!” Minaj said told MTV News in a statement. “U guys always know a good thing! Ha!!!! The barbz and I are thrilled. :)” The Young Money MC released her debut, Pink Friday, at the end of 2010 and rode the success of that album well into 2011 with several hit singles, including “Moment 4 Life” (featuring Drake) and the infectious “Super Bass.” Minaj also further expanded her fanbase into the pop world by joining Britney Spears on her Femme Fatale Tour . “I wanted my set to be more than an opening act, ’cause, you know, I did that already,” Minaj told MTV News back in August. “I always like to raise the bar for myself, and that’s what I did. I think it’s important to give people what they paid for. I don’t really expect them to know all the records, but I guess it just kind of transcends all genres of music at this point.” And transcending genres is exactly what Nicki is doing. She just shot the video for Madonna’s “Gimme All Your Luvin” , which will also feature M.I.A. The four-time Grammy nominee also released “Roman in Moscow,” the first track off her upcoming sophomore album, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded. It’s all setting the stage for a big 2012. “It’s been overwhelming, it’s been crazy,” she recently told us about her tremendous year. “But it’s been fun. … It’s been a crazy year.” Stick with MTV as we count down the Best of 2011 , including the top Artists , Songs , Live Performances and EDM Artists of the year. ‘X Factor’: Marcus Canty’s Time Runs Out

Josh Krajcik, Melanie Amaro and Chris Rene will face off in next week’s two-part finale. By Adam Graham Marcus Canty on “X Factor” Photo: FOX Marcus Canty’s luck finally ran out on Thursday’s (December 15) “The X Factor,” as the 20-year-old from Bowie, Maryland, was voted off the show one week away from the finale. That leaves Josh Krajcik , Chris Rene and Melanie Amaro to battle it out for the $5 million recording contract in next week’s finals. Canty found himself in a familiar position on Thursday’s results show when he was among the last two to have his fate read by host Steve Jones. Canty had landed in the bottom two each of the last three weeks but had pulled through each time, including last week’s dramatic finish when he triumphed over cutie-pie contestant Rachel Crow after a controversial decision by Nicole Scherzinger to put the final results in the hands of America’s votes. Canty didn’t have a chance to sing for his life to the judges this week, as votes were decided by America and America only. Krajcik and Canty were the last two standing on the stage, and Krajcik was put through, sending Canty home. The singer, who was compared early on to Bobby Brown, took the news in stride. He was at a disadvantage coming off Wednesday’s episode, after Simon Cowell called his performance of George Michael’s “Careless Whisper” “grotesque” and “an absolute joke.” His version of Boyz II Men’s “I’ll Make Love to You” didn’t fare much better. “It’s not over, just trust me. This is not the last time you will see Marcus Canty,” Canty said after the vote was read. “I gave it my all, and that’s really, at the end of the day, that’s all you can do.” L.A. Reid, who mentored Canty in the competition, expressed sadness at his contestant’s elimination and told Canty he has his support going forward. Some 30 million votes were cast by viewers this week, according to host Jones. Earlier in the episode, Chris Rene was the first act put through to the finals, and Melanie Amaro followed. Jones stressed the results were read in no particular order. The show also saw Florence and the Machine performing “Spectrum” and Nicole Scherzinger debuting her latest single, “Pretty.” Afterward, Cowell weighed in on the performance and mocked Scherzinger’s cosmic judging style by telling her, “I believe in you, you believe in me, you transcend the universe, God is smiling on you, life is a waterfall, and you are the ultimate rainbow.” Krajcik, Rene and Amaro will face off on Wednesday’s 90-minute performance episode, and a winner will be crowned at the conclusion of next Thursday’s two-hour finale. What did you think of the results? Let us know in the comments!

The problem-plagued actress has been faced with a string of new hardships in recent weeks, beginning with the anonymous hacker-produced leak of her Playboy spread , which forced Hugh Hefner and company to move up the magazine’s publication date , followed by her being robbed at a party in Hawaii . The list of stolen items includes a $5,000 Chanel purse, which contained $10,000, a passport, probation papers and other forms of identification. And Tuesday (December 13), MTV News has learned that Lohan’s streak of trouble continues, as she will not be making her much-anticipated appearance on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show.” “Lindsay Lohan’s appearance has been canceled due to a missed flight,” a rep from “Ellen” confirmed to MTV News. Lohan was scheduled to appear on the show to talk about her Playboy shoot for the first time. There is no word on whether the appearance will be rescheduled. 30 Seconds To Mars Thank Fans For Best Live MTV Performance Win

‘Once again, the unstoppable Echelon,’ frontman Jared Leto marvels of band’s dedicated fanbase. By James Montgomery Jared Leto performs “Hurricane” on “Unplugged: Photo: MTV On Tuesday afternoon (December 13), 30 Seconds to Mars took home the inaugural Best Live MTV Performance award for their stirring, scintillating “Unplugged” version of “Hurricane.” Thanks to the votes of their fans, 30STM withstood a late charge from Paramore’s “Brick by Boring Brick” to win the honor. Now, with their trophy firmly in hand, they’re reacting to their triumph — and, as always, sharing their glory with their fervent Echelon fanbase. “This is so incredible. We had an amazing time doing [‘Unplugged’], and thank you to everybody who voted,” frontman Jared Leto said. “Once again, the unstoppable Echelon. We love you guys. “If it wasn’t for the Echelon, we wouldn’t have ever won a single award,” he continued. “I think that’s the blessing of living in this digital age, is that people have a voice, and the Echelon Nation out there has made their voice heard again and again, and we’re so proud that they’re able to gather together, to organize themselves, to fight for a common cause and to make dreams a reality. It’s pretty special.” In a week when there was no shortage of highlights for the band — they were awarded their hard-earned gold record plaques for the This Is War album and entered the “Guinness Book of World Records” with a sold-out, celebratory show in New York — Leto counts their Best Live Performance win as one of the biggest moments. It was almost enough to bring a tear to his steely-blue eyes. “We’re very surprised. … It’s been an insane week already. We got a gold record, we did a Guinness World Record-breaking show,” he laughed. “There’s gonna be a few tears rolling down these hardened, leathery, road-dog cheeks.” All this week, watch “AMTV” on MTV every day at 8 a.m. ET for our Best of 2011 lists. Ryan Braun, National League MVP, Reportedly Tests Positive For Banned Substance

Reigning National League MVP Ryan Braun has reportedly tested positive for a banned substance and is appealing to Major League Baseball, according to reports. ESPN cited two sources Saturday in first reporting the news, saying the 28-year-old Milwaukee Brewers star tested positive for elevated levels of testosterone. A spokesman for Braun said in a statement that “there are highly unusual circumstances surrounding this case which will support Ryan’s complete innocence.” “There was absolutely no intentional violation of the program,” Matthew Hiltzik said in a statement sent by the four-time All-Star left fielder’s representatives. “Ryan has impeccable character and no previous history, unfortunately, because of the process we have to maintain confidentiality and are not able to discuss it any further.” “we are confident that he will ultimately be exonerated.” The case is still being appealed to an arbitrator under MLB’s drug program. Major League Baseball does not announce positive tests and penalties in drug cases involving initial positives until all arbitration issues are concluded. The people spoke on condition of anonymity because the appeal is still ongoing and said Braun has known about the positive test since late October. One of the people involved said that the appeals process regarding the outfielder’s case is not likely to be concluded until January at the earliest. That person said after being informed of the positive test, Braun asked to have another urine test taken, and that test was within normal range. If suspended, Ryan Braun wouldn’t be eligible to play for the NL Central champions until May 31 at Dodger Stadium, barring any postponements. The 50-game suspension means he would miss the first 57 days of the major league season, losing about $1.87 million of his $6 million salary. He hit .312 with 33 homers and 111 RBIs in 2011 and led Milwaukee to the NLCS, where the Brewers lost to the eventual World Series champion Cardinals.

Lindsay Lohan on Playboy Pics: When Nature Calls …

Lindsay Lohan is feeling the call of nature these days. The star, who poses nude in Playboy in a Marilyn Monroe-inspired layout, says that was the simple reason she decided to bare all for the men’s magazine. The nearly seven-figure payout probably didn’t hurt, either. “Sex and sexuality are a part of nature, and I go along with nature,” Lohan told Playboy . “I think Marilyn Monroe once said that. I certainly agree with her.” To guys everywhere, the Lindsay Lohan Playboy pictures are either arousing or amusing. But to the “actress” herself, they are completely empowering. “It’s a very male-dominated world we live in to begin with, so knowing yourself and being comfortable with your body is an important thing for me as a woman.” Lohan, who is vacationing with her sister Ali Lohan in Hawaii, puts great importance on “knowing yourself and your body because it gives you confidence.” Amid a slew of legal problems that have landed her in jail over the last few years, says she now knows how to make better decisions with her brain, too. “Looking back, I probably would have listened to and taken more advice from the people whom I admire and would have followed through with it more.” “My stubbornness at 18 and 19 years old got in the way,” she adds . “During the past five years, I’ve learned that time flies faster than you think, and you only live once. You have to learn from your mistakes, live your dreams and be accountable,” says one of the least accountable people to have ever lived. The Playboy spread will be released early (it’s now coming out late next week) after the cover and some of the inside photos were leaked online.

Is Paramore’s ‘Brick’ The Best 2011 MTV Performance?

Band’s triumphant set at Fueled by Ramen anniversary show captures powerful bond with family of fans — vote now! By James Montgomery Paramore’s Hayley Williams performs at the Fueled by Ramen 15th anniversary concert in September Photo: MTV Paramore had what could charitably be described as an interesting 2011, recovering from the departure of founding members Josh and Zac Farro , rediscovering the joy of playing music in the midst of a South American tour , and reconnecting with fans through the debut of their song-a-month “Singles Club.” In short, it’s been the kind of year that would break lesser bands, and yet, Paramore persist, with a reinvigorated sense of purpose and plans for a new album in 2012. And they make no bones about the fact that both of those things are due in no small part to the fervent support of their fanbase. Theirs is a bond that goes beyond mere fandom; they are, as frontwoman Hayley Williams told MTV News earlier this year, “family.” So it is somewhat fitting that, in a year where so much was focused on the inner workings of the band, we bring 2011 to a close by showcasing Paramore playing what amounted to one huge family gathering: their headlining performance at September’s Fueled by Ramen 15th anniversary show , a rousing run-through of their biggest hits (and a couple new tunes) in front of a sold-out, spirited crowd. It was cathartic, it was energetic, and yes, it was plenty sweaty. In a year when MTV featured plenty of performances, it remains one of the highlights. So it’s equally fitting that Paramore’s “Brick by Boring Brick” is in the running for the Best MTV Live Performance of 2011 , up against the likes of Adele’s chill-inducing VMA moment and Beyonc
