Will Katy Perry Or Rihanna ‘Pop’ At The Grammys?

Lady Gaga and Adele also up for two major pop trophies at Sunday’s show. By Jocelyn Vena Katy Perry in her video for “Firework” Photo: EMI The pop stars nominated at this year’s Grammy Awards couldn’t be more different from one another, both visually and sonically. In the two biggest pop categories, Best Pop Vocal Album and Best Pop Solo Performance, every spectrum of pop is represented: from soulful to candy-colored and everything in between. As the Grammy Awards approach, MTV News will break down the contenders in both categories. So, here we go. Best Pop Vocal Album Adele’s 21 has six nominations under its belt at this year’s show, including the biggie, Album of the Year. Since its release nearly a year ago, Adele’s heartbreak opus reigned on radio, the charts and the collective hearts of the lovelorn everywhere. It boasts production from Ryan Tedder, Paul Epworth and Rick Rubin, and tracks the singer’s heartbreak after a split from a former beau. Cee Lo Green gave the world a big “F— You” with his The Lady Killer , which dropped in November 2010, and the album has sustained its momentum thanks to that one track (and Cee Lo’s “The Voice” gig). The album got some songwriting and production help from fellow nominee, Bruno Mars, and in addition to this nod, its track “Fool for You” is also up for some gold. Lady Gaga’s love-yourself album, Born This Way, is a metal-disco composition about romance, New York City and couture. With production from RedOne, Fernando Garibay and DJ White Shadow, the album was released last May, and while the sound looked to the future, it also paid homage to her past when she enlisted the late Clarence Clemons from Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band and Brian May of Queen. Bruno Mars crooned his way to the top of the charts with his debut album Doo-Wops & Hooligans. Displaying his love for melodies and lyrics about love and loss, Mars’ experiment in mixing doo-wop and new millennium production value managed to make him a household name and a big-time nominee. Album of the Year-nominated Loud was Rihanna’s return to form. After a dark turn on Rated R, Ri was feeling sunnier, saucier and sassier on the 2010 album that featured production from Stargate and Tricky Stewart and tracks like the fist-pumping “Only Girl (In The World)” and the reggae-influenced “Man Down.” Best Pop Solo Performance On “Someone Like You,” Adele’s big voice and knack for heartache was on full display. The second 21 single got a songwriting and production assist from Semisonic frontman Dan Wilson (the guy who gave us “Closing Time” in the ’90s) and follows Adele as she comes to terms with the loss of her former flame. Like Adele, Bruno Mars put his heart and soul on the line on the Doo-Wops & Hooligans uber-ballad, “Grenade.” The song, produced by the Mars-fronted the Smeezingtons, tracks a distraught man as he realizes the woman he loves doesn’t feel the same way about him. Lady Gaga had been teasing “You and I” for some time, but before the finished version appeared on Born This Way, no one could have guessed what May, Gaga and super producer Mutt Lange could have cooked up. What they released was a funky, smashing ode to reclaiming lost love. Katy Perry hadn’t touched on deeper issues on earlier singles, but when it came to her Teenage Dream feel-good anthem, “Firework,” she went there and it took on a life of its own. With Ester Dean and Stargate working with Perry on the song, it topped the charts and became the fourth in a record-breaking string of #1 hits off that album. Like Perry, Pink gave a voice to the disenfranchised on “F—in’ Perfect” (off her greatest hits collection that dropped in 2010). Working with Max Martin and Shellback on the track, she hit the top of the charts and empowered her fans thanks lyrics like, “You’re f—ing perfect to me.” Who do you think will “pop” at the Grammys this year? Katy Perry’s Hair: Why So Blue?

Perry’s hair colorist weighs in on the pop star’s ever-changing locks. By Jocelyn Vena Katy Perry Photo: Jeff Bottari/ Getty Images Over the weekend, Katy Perry debuted another shade of blue hair in Las Vegas . The newer, bluer hair was more turquoise than the look she had sported weeks before on the set of an Adidas commercial . Katy is constantly changing her hair color from black to blond to pink, and seemingly every shade in between. These days, however, it seems she’s settled on blue. So, when MTV News spoke to her longtime hair colorist, Rita Hazan, she gave us the low-down on why Ms. Perry is feeling so blue these days. “Of course, being Katy, she is a lot more edgy and she’s cooler and she likes to take a lot of risks. And I love that she’s like, ‘I’m feeling a little blue, let’s go blue’ — not in her energy, just in her hair color,” Hazan explained to MTV News about the pop star’s current hair-color choice. “I felt like it’s the perfect color for her because her eyes are blue and she has the perfect skin tone to be a really vibrant, really cool, intense blue.” When Hazan first heard about Perry’s decision to deepen her locks to blue, she wanted her to be a “cobalt blue, muted cobalt blue; it’s really cool. It took me three days to come up with this color. I’m so obsessed with it. It’s like the wallpaper for my iPhone.” Since then, the color has lightened up a bit, but regardless of the shade, the hair still has everyone buzzing. “I was shocked by all the crazy reactions that people had to the blue ’cause I thought going from black to pink would have been the major reaction people would have,” she said. “But I kind of like that people are loving the blue ’cause I’m obsessed with blue. So any shade of blue, I’m loving. I know it’s not natural, but it sort of works in a natural way.” Of course, her hair color might have something to do with her recent split from Russell Brand . Kimberley Pierce, a colorist at Ion Studio in New York City, explained that she’s seen many a newly single chick come in and change up their mood with some new hair color. “They’ll come in for a consult and say, ‘My boyfriend and I just broke up and I want brown hair’ and they’re a blonde,” she said, adding that she usually has some advice for those rash decisions. “The best thing we can do for them is tell them to try a wig on first.” Whatever Katy’s reason for the shocking, eye-catching color change, Pierce added that it really works for her. “I kind of like that she got away from the pink because I feel like we’ve seen that so much. With the blue, it’s more vibrant and definitely she’s on her own with it,” she said. “She’s kind of all the way in with the blue. She’s kind of this candy-coated sort of person. So I guess blue would be the natural transition, or purple. It’s nice to see her experiment with different things.” What do you think of Katy Perry’s new blue hair? Leave your comment below! Katy Perry Debuts Light-Blue Locks In Vegas

Pop star shows off new ‘do at a Las Vegas charity event. By Rebecca Thomas Katy Perry at 1 Oak in Las Vegas on Saturday Photo: David Becker/WireImage Katy Perry is feeling a little less blue these days. The pop star began rocking an electric-blue bob not long after news broke that husband Russell Brand had filed for divorce late last year. But Perry, who stepped out in Las Vegas this weekend, appears to have dipped her locks in the dye once again. On Friday night, KP hit a charity event dressed in a beaded frock, her razor-cut ‘do colored in a rich turquoise. The party at the Vegas outpost of nightspot 1OAK was hosted by GiveLove.org , an organization devoted to improving public health in Haiti. But although newly separated Perry reportedly put on a good face, one source told amNewYork the “Waking Up in Vegas” singer seemed “subdued.” The pop star “pretty much sat in the same spot the whole night” as her friends danced, according to the source. While Katy has always been adventurous about her hair hues, post-split, she seems, anecdotally at least, to be hitting the bottle — of dye — with increasing frequency. Brand and Perry announced the end of their marriage on December 30, after 14 months together. The exes have been a keeping a rather low profile ever since. The comic is set to perform on March 4 at New York’s Radio City Music Hall as part of an Amnesty International benefit, while Perry may turn up next at the Grammy awards on February 12, where she’s up for two statues. She was spotted earlier this month shooting an Adidas ad , not long after wrapping two concert dates in Indonesia and the Philippines. Share your thoughts on Katy’s latest look on our Facebook page. Joe Jonas, Jennifer Love Hewitt Cozy Up In ‘Cleveland’

On the JoBro’s latest episode of ‘Hot in Cleveland,’ premiering Wednesday night on TV Land, his and Hewitt’s characters get engaged. By Kara Warner Joe Jonas Photo: MTV News Jet-setting actor/musician Joe Jonas has once again made time in his busy schedule for a little stop through Cleveland — “Hot in Cleveland,” that is, the popular show on TV Land starring Valerie Bertinelli, Betty White, Wendie Malick and Jane Leeves. Jonas has a guest-starring role on the sitcom as the wayward son of Bertinelli’s character. MTV News was lucky enough to visit the set of “Cleveland” on the day Jonas filmed his second guest spot, which premieres Wednesday night (January 25) at 10 p.m. ET. When we caught up with him for a few minutes between scenes, he shared some details about his return to the show. “Being back on the show, [my character Will is] engaged, and I have to be engaged to Jennifer Love Hewitt, which is really nice,” he said. “We’re both sons and daughters of characters on the show, and we show up and surprise everybody. They don’t expect us to be engaged.” Jonas said that while it was fun to work with Hewitt, their characters’ engagement doesn’t exactly last for long. “Both of our characters are really different. I think I’m a little bit blinded by the fact that she may not be the perfect person for me. I think we last probably less than Kim Kardashian in this,” he joked. Long engagements or no, Jonas said he loves his time on the show and would be happy to come back any time. “I would love to be able to return again. The first episode when I left, people were like, ‘Are you going to be back soon?’ and I said, ‘I think so.’ I don’t think my character passed away, so I think we’re good. I don’t die in this episode either,” he added. “So I’m still around, so I could definitely come back if they’d like me to. I have a fun time being on the set and I love the cast; it’s kind of like a family.” Are you excited to see Joe in “Cleveland” again? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Joe Jonas

The event marks the first time the ball has been held in the U.S. and also is Brand’s first scheduled appearance since he and Perry split in December; the “California Gurls” hitmaker has already made a pair of public appearances, first filming an Adidas commercial earlier this month and then returning to the stage for a concert in Jakarta, Indonesia . Rick Perry Drops Out Of Race, Endorses Newt Gingrich

‘I know when it’s time to make a strategic retreat,’ former GOP presidential hopeful says. By Dan Montalto Rick Perry Photo: Getty Images Rick Perry announced Thursday (January 19) that he is suspending his campaign for the Republican presidential nomination and throwing his support behind former House Speaker Newt Gingrich. Perry made the announcement at a news conference in Charleston, South Carolina, saying, “I have come to the conclusion that there is no viable path forward for me in the 2012 campaign. I know when it’s time to make a strategic retreat.” The Texas governor’s announcement came just hours before the final debate leading up to Saturday’s South Carolina primary, in which he had been polling in the low single digits. Perry finished fifth in both the Iowa caucus and the New Hampshire primary . Upon entering the race, Perry initially surged in the polls, but his support quickly dwindled following several gaffes during the Republican debates. In explaining his support for Gingrich, Perry stated, “I believe Newt is a conservative visionary who can transform this country,” adding that Gingrich has the “heart of a conservative reformer.” With recent polls showing Gingrich closing in on Romney’s lead in South Carolina, Perry’s timing and endorsement could have an impact on Saturday’s primary. Perry’s endorsement of Gingrich also comes on the same day that a recount of the Iowa caucus results erased Romney’s razor-thin victory, putting former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum at the top of the vote count.
