Time Editor Says Tea Party Not Named ‘Person of the Year’ Because They’re Not a Person

Time's managing editor Richard Stengel appeared on MSNBC's Andrea Mitchell Reports, on Thursday, to promote his magazine's Person of the Year issue and after he cited the reasons for selecting Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, he explained the reason the Tea Party didn't was because they were a group. After host Andrea Mitchell asked him to explain his rationale for not picking the other runners-up, Stengel lamely told her he disqualified the Tea Party because he's “biased in favor of putting a single person on the cover.”

Facebook Founder Mark Zuckerberg Named Time’s ‘Person of the Year’

Magazine praises Zuckerberg for wiring ‘a twelfth of humanity’ into single network. By Gil Kaufman Mark Zuckerberg Photo: Justin Sullivan/Getty Images Yes, being the youngest self-made billionaire at 26 is impressive. And having an award-nominated movie about your company’s origins become a big-screen hit is not to shabby either. But one of the reasons Time magazine chose Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg as its “Person of the Year” is this little fact: “In less than seven years, Zuckerberg wired together a twelfth of humanity in a single network.” Praising the Facebook boss for creating a universal living room that has brought the planet that much closer together, the magazine wrote that “we have entered the Facebook age, and Mark Zuckerberg is the man who brought us here.” In a year in which Zuckerberg’s American tale was brought to life by director David Fincher in the hit “The Social Network” — which didn’t always paint a flattering portrait of the billionaire boss — and Zuck joined an initiative among the mega-wealthy to donate the majority of his fortune to charity, the bottom line for Time was the way in which Facebook has fundamentally altered the way we communicate, spend our time and organize our social lives. Born in 1984, the same year the first Macintosh computer from Apple was introduced, Time said that Zuckerberg is both a product of his wired generation and an architect of our digital world. “The social-networking platform he invented is closing in on 600 million users. In a single day, about a billion new pieces of content are posted on Facebook. It is the connective tissue for nearly a tenth of the planet,” the magazine wrote about the platform created by the T-shirt-wearing Harvard dropout. “Facebook is now the third-largest country on earth and surely has more information about its citizens than any government does.” Zuckerberg beat out the year’s runners-up, WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange — who launched a nefarious digital revolution of his own — and the upstart Tea Party political movement, whose impact was felt in the 2010 midterm elections that swept Democrats out of the majority in the House of Representatives while narrowing the gap in the Senate. Like those two rogue movements, “Zuckerberg doesn’t have a whole lot of veneration for traditional authority,” the magazine wrote. “In a sense, Zuckerberg and Assange are two sides of the same coin. Both express a desire for openness and transparency. While Assange attacks big institutions and governments through involuntary transparency with the goal of disempowering them, Zuckerberg enables individuals to voluntarily share information with the idea of empowering them. Assange sees the world as filled with real and imagined enemies; Zuckerberg sees the world as filled with potential friends.” While his youth and relatively modest life experience might make the designation seem premature, Time noted that “Person of the Year” is not and never has been intended as an honor. Case in point, along with such winners as John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr., other designees have included dictators Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin and disgraced U.S. President Richard Nixon. “It is a recognition of the power of individuals to shape our world,” the magazine explained. “For connecting more than half a billion people and mapping the social relations among them (something that has never been done before); for creating a new system of exchanging information that has become both indispensable and sometimes a little scary; and finally, for changing how we all live our lives in ways that are innovative and even optimistic, Mark Elliot Zuckerberg is Time ‘s 2010 Person of the Year.” While they weren’t in the running for “Person of the Year,” among the other notable deemed “People Who Mattered” by the magazine were Justin Bieber, Sandra Bullock, Lady Gaga, the cast of “Glee,” Lebron James, the cast of “Jersey Shore,” Conan O’Brien, Kanye West and Betty White. Christina Aguilera Defends Her ‘X Factor’ Performance

‘I don’t think there is such a thing as too raunchy when it comes to the art form of burlesque,’ singer says. By Jocelyn Vena Christina Aguilera Photo: Frederick M. Brown/ Getty Images Christina Aguilera once went by the moniker Xtina, but apparently that didn’t give her permission to be racy when she performed on “The X Factor” this week. The Daily Express reports that her performance of “Express” from her Golden Globe-nominated movie “Burlesque” received more than 1,000 complaints after Aguilera and her dancers shimmied around on the stage provocatively during the prime-time broadcast. But Aguilera is standing by the performance. “I don’t think there is such a thing as too raunchy when it comes to the art form of burlesque,” the singer explained at the U.K. premiere of the film. “It’s very empowering to women to feel confident in their own skin and in their bodies and this represents that. Everyone in the spotlight is judged and there are many opinions out there, but I stick true to what I believe in.” While that performance may have left a bad taste in some people’s mouths, Aguilera also hit the stage with “X Factor” contestant Rebecca Ferguson, who said that performing “Beautiful” with the singer was a career high. “She’s an amazing artist. I was so starstruck,” she told Echo.co.uk . “I still can’t believe I got to sing with her.” Ferguson added that Aguilera helped calm her nerves before the performance. “We rehearsed it through and I was worried I would sing her lyrics, so she said we would work it out onstage. She told me to keep eye contact with her,” she said. “I thought she was really sweet. I liked her. Don’t get me wrong, she was a professional, but at the same time, she didn’t have to record a good luck message for me.” Related Photos The Evolution Of: Christina Aguilera Related Artists Christina Aguilera

Ryan Reynolds And Scarlett Johansson: A Look Back

Reynolds recently referred to Johansson as his ‘best buddy.’ By Jocelyn Vena Scarlett Johansson and Ryan Reynolds in September 2009 Photo: Pacific Coast News It’s been a bad week for celebrity relationships. First came news that Vanessa Hudgens and Zac Efron had broken up , and then Ryan Reynolds and Scarlett Johansson announced that they were splitting after two years of marriage. While the two had remained relatively private about their relationship, which began in 2007, they always had the kindest things to say about their marriage and each other. Shortly after getting married in 2008, Johansson admitted that she loved having a private wedding, opting out of the lavish Hollywood affairs many of her peers tend to throw. “It was my mission to have a moment of privacy, to do something for myself,” Johansson told the Los Angeles Times about the wedding, which took place in Canada. “I was happy with the results of that.” She opened up about her decision to marry in Glamour last year, saying, “I never really thought about getting married — it just kind of happened. It seemed natural, the right thing to do. It was kind of a celebration of the time.” The actress and sometime singer expressed her happiness about having that special someone in her life. In the May issue of InStyle, Johansson opened up about being married to the “Green Lantern” star , saying, “I mean, you’re married, and suddenly you have your own family. There’s a nice comfort in that. That part of your life is certain, in a way. You’ve got your home in that other person.” Reynolds expressed a similar sentiment to People when he was declared the Sexiest Man Alive. Of being married to Johansson, he said, “You get to hang out with your best buddy every day.” At the Tony Awards in June, when Johansson took the stage to accept an acting award for “A View From the Bridge,” she gave a nod to her husband , thanking “the Canadian I live with.” The two had very bustling careers, and Reynolds noted in GQ this fall that kidsweren’t in the plans just yet. “A few years down the road, having a family,” he said. “That’s years away at this point.” Related Photos The Way They Were: Ryan Reynolds And Scarlett Johansson

Ryan Reynolds And Scarlett Johansson Split

‘We’ve decided to end our marriage,’ Reynolds confirms to MTV News. By Jocelyn Vena Ryan Reynolds and Scarlett Johansson Photo: Kevin Mazur Ryan Reynolds and Scarlett Johansson are separating, MTV News has confirmed. TMZ first reported that the couple had split up and that things are “amicable” between them. As of now, neither has filed for divorce, according to the website, but they are living separately. “After long and careful consideration on both our parts, we’ve decided to end our marriage,” Reynolds said in a statement to MTV News. “We entered our relationship with love and it’s with love and kindness we leave it. While privacy isn’t expected, it’s certainly appreciated.” Us Weekly reports that the split happened about two weeks ago and notes that “the big problem with their relationship is the distance,” a source said, adding, “They spent a lot of time apart when they are working. … She’s been unhappy for a while.” The pair married in 2008 in Canada after being engaged earlier that year, and while they remained relatively private, they have spoken about their love for each other. In the May issue of InStyle, Johansson opened up about being married to the “Green Lantern” star, saying, “I mean, you’re married, and suddenly you have your own family. There’s a nice comfort in that. That part of your life is certain, in a way. You’ve got your home in that other person.” At the Tony Awards in June, when she took the stage to accept her award, she gave a nod to her husband, thanking “the Canadian I live with.” Reynolds told GQ that the actress was “the best part” of his life and even joked about his People Sexiest Man Alive nod, explaining that Johansson would have a different way to ask him to do chores around the house. “Now it’s going to be, ‘Sexiest Man, take out the garbage,’ ” he laughed. “That does sound better.” Related Photos The Way They Were: Ryan Reynolds And Scarlett Johansson

Lady Gaga Makes a Horrible Sex Doll of the Day

I know these wax figures of people are supposed to be a better looking rendition of the person they are of, because if they were identical, none of these vain, self-involved, disguting actors would bother doing it, and even with their expert wax figure artist, Lady Gaga’s is one I wouldn’t fuck…..and I pretty much fuck everything inanimate….just last night I woke up with my dick wedged between a dresser drawer with a cheap wine bottle up my ass…but I know you’re less picky when it comes to your sex dolls, like my friend Tommy, who was the guy who developed a loving relationship with his sex doll and took her on dates, dressed her up, would make dinner for her, and even tried to coordinate a marriage with her, which made the whole thing really fucking awkward cuz Tommy was ghetto and could only affor a pocket pussy without the rest of her body…and even as used up and weird as that was…it was still better than this Gaga shit…

Kirsten Dunst Interview: Depression, Rehab was an "Awful Time"

Things are a lot better these days for Kirsten Dunst. Just two years ago, the actress was struggling with depression and checked herself into Utah’s Cirque Lodge Treatment Center. It was a battle she chronicles in the latest issue of BlackBook , telling the magazine: “I know what it’s like to lose yourself, to no longer know the difference between right or wrong.” When her life fell apart, Dunst was falsely accused of seeking treatment for drug and alcohol abuse, a fact that made her hesitant to resume her acting career (she stars in All Good Things , to be released on 12/9). “I used to assume that I’d [act] forever, and then there came a point in my life when I was like, ‘Why am I doing this at all?'” she says. “My friends and family were put in a position where they had to defend me, and it was an awful time.” So, why open up now? “On a personal level, I would talk to anybody about it, but not on a public level. If I do that, then the next person feels like they can ask me about it, and the person after that, until everyone then feels entitled to ask me about it, and that’s not coming from a good place.” We wish Dunst a full recovery.

Kirsten Dunst Meets Missing Woman’s Family For ‘All Good Things’

‘I think they’re so relieved that the story is being told,’ actress says. By Kara Warner Kirsten Dunst Photo: MTV News When an actor takes on a role based on a real person or event, one of the best ways for them to get into the head of the person they’re playing is to meet with them or someone close to them. In the case of Kirsten Dunst’s preparation for the upcoming thriller “All Good Things” (which is based on real events), however, her in-person meeting with her character’s family was more difficult than enlightening: The woman she plays, Kathleen Durst, disappeared in 1982 and hasn’t been found. “I met Kathie Durst’s brother, and I guess what would have been her niece,” Dunst told MTV News recently during a press day for “All Good Things.” “We went over to their house. It was really nice, but it was difficult, because I’m playing someone who was so dear to them that went missing. I just listened, basically,” she explained. “I think that, for them, it’s still difficult to talk about. I’m not going to probe with questions. That’s a really intimate environment, and I was invited to their home,” Dunst continued. She went on to say that what stayed with her long after the meeting was the family’s continued love for Kathie. Dunst also came away with a sense of sympathy for the woman, who fell in love with a charming, yet troubled man from a very powerful family. “I can see how when someone falls in love with someone who can take you away financially, is very wealthy, sometimes you lose touch with your family and what’s really going on,” she said. Regarding how the family is dealing with a big-screen adaptation of their loved one’s tragic tale, Dunst said she believes they feel a sense of relief. “It seems difficult for them to know that this man who did this to her, his family, no one helped or did anything, and [Kathie’s family] didn’t have the means to help find her,” she said. “So, I think they’re so relieved that the story is being told and brought to light.” And despite the ominous, slightly creepy tone of the film — due in large part to Ryan Gosling’s chilling portrayal as Kathie’s scarred, bottled-up husband — Dunst said the discomfort is worth it. “I think that the performances are really strong, and I think that because it’s a true story and it’s so shocking. It’s just unbelievable and frightening, but also you get this love story,” she explained. “A lot of things are happening in this film, and it’s still an unsolved mystery, and I think that always makes everything so much more believable.” “All Good Things” opens in New York on Friday, and Los Angeles and additional cities December 10.
