Car Smoking ‘Child Abuse’, Leading General Practioner Warns

Parents who smoke in cars in front of small children are “committing a form of child abuse”, a leading GP has said. Professor Steve Field, chairman of the Royal College of General Practitioners, has condemned society's attitudes to food, alcohol and cigarettes. In a letter to the Observer newspaper, he said parents had to take more responsibility for their children's health – and set a good example. He said irresponsible behaviour led to high levels of disease and early death. He called on parents, mothers-to-be, the obese, smokers and drinkers to turn into healthy role models for their children. Professor Field, who represents 42,000 GPs across the UK, added: “I suppose the same people also smoke at home in front of their children. Evidence from the US indicates that more young children are killed by parental smoking than by all other unintentional injuries combined.” Other health experts have previously called for smoking to be banned in cars when children are present, but the government's recent decision not to review existing smoking legislation means that move is unlikely. In his letter, Professor Field says adults need to take responsibility for their own health too. He added: “The truth, which may be unpalatable to some, is that too many of us, too often, neglect too many aspects of our own personal health behaviour, and this is leading to increasing levels of ill-health and early death. “Public health is a sensitive subject. “It's not easy to strike the right balance between protecting people's sensibilities and delivering the hard facts about their personal behaviours that are ultimately shortening their lives. “Too many people do not face up to the hard facts, as they perceive them to be an attack aimed, in particular, at the poorer members of our society, when it is impossible to argue on medical or ethical grounds, that such behaviour is acceptable.” And he said they should ensure they were “healthy role models” so that children learnt to eat well, exercise and look after their own health. added by: Omnomynous

My Own Personal Beauty Matrix

Why Do You Do This? The question that I've been asked the most lately is “why do you do this?”. {This meaning spending so much time writing, researching, interviewing people and talking about non-toxic choices in organic beauty products.} That's a fair question and one that got me thinking about the deeper answer. The obvious answers are health, the environment, our future. But the truth is, the answer is a bit more complicated. There is no fat paycheck arriving in my mailbox each week that keeps my fingers tapping these keys. In fact, I don't know if I'll ever make any significant income from this (but if I do, that would be icing on the organic cake and help me get the message out loud and proud!). According to Active ingredients used in cosmetics: safety survey (2008) “Ingredients are used in cosmetics to give them specific properties. Certain ingredients, so called active ingredients, may produce pharmacological or toxic effects under certain conditions. Cosmetic products containing such ingredients may pose a health risk both because of their potential toxicity and because they may mask underlying serious diseases and consequently cause a dangerous delay in diagnosis and treatment.” My Own Personal Matrix By now, I think we've all at least heard of the movie Matrix with Keanu Reeves and Laurence Fishburn. I've only ever seen the first movie where the Matrix is introduced. You know that famous scene where Fishburn's character is offering Keanu the choice of taking a little pill that would change everything forever, or taking another pill that would return him to pleasant life as he knew it. Fishburn's character makes sure Keanu understands that once he takes the “truth revealing” pill, there is no going back to daily life and that he will “never see anything the same way again.” When Neo, Reeve's characeter asks, “What is the Matrix?”, Fishburne answers…”The matrix is the world that has been pulled over your eyes that protects you from the truth!” This is the line..this is the one line runs through my mind each time I see an add for Loreal, Revlon and any other mainstream cosmetics line. Each time one of these ads promises to plump, make something glow, or beautify women all over the world, I feel as if they are hoping that their target audience has not taken the other pill…the one where they don't to see the actual truth….they don't READ THE LABEL and learn about it. makeup1.jpg What Is The Truth? The truth is something that can be very personal and relative to each individual. I think we all, as humans love to believe that the government, FDA and the companies actually creating beauty products share a common truth have the greater good for humanity and health in mind. “They wouldn't create something that would hurt us!”, and “Isn't it FDA approved?” are the most common lines of thinking when it comes to extent of the reflecting on possible toxins in our beauty regimen. Since I chose to take the ‘Matrix exposing pill' I haven't been able to see the world in quite the same way. After spending over a decade working in and managing beauty salons I knew intuitively and physically that the smells were not good for us. I just didn't know how bad they were. How Bad Are They…Really? We all like to think that the FDA is there to protect us and put strict guidelines in place to force companies to only use ingredients that have been thoroughly tested. The truth is, those guidelines are not as strong as they should be. One glaring example of the lack of control is a simple comparison of known toxic ingredients including lead and talc (a relative of asbestos) banned from use in the United States versus Europe. According to the Environmental Working Group “…unlike for drugs and food additives, FDA has no authority to require that cosmetics be tested for safety before they are sold. An industry-funded panel (the CIR), not a government health agency, reviews the safety of cosmetic ingredients in the U.S. Our research shows that this largely self-regulated industry routinely fails to adhere to their own safety panel's advice or to heed the health warnings inherent in cosmetic safety standards set in other countries. More than 750 personal care products sold in the U.S. violate industry safety standards or cosmetic safety standards in other industrialized countries.” But I Thought We Were Worth It? Did you know that Europe has tested and banned over 1200 ingredients for use in cosmetics. Let's compare that to the FDA who has banned around 10!!! The truth is that FDA will only get involved in a situation if the product has been known to cause obvious harm to a person. The problem with this outlook is that most toxins have a slow trickle affect on a person. You may notice a rash or dry skin or hair and not even relate it to the product you are using. What Can I DO? You do have options. The organic cosmetics market has more than tripled over the last 5 years. The products are actually good, very good. You don't have to go naked and barefoot to go green anymore. You can be your gorgeous self and still use beauty products that are not causing harm. Here is a resource that can help in wading through the beauty aisle – www.cosmeticsdatabase.com . Here you can look up the safety rating of products as well as individual ingredients. This isn't just about looking good, it's about living a long healthy life not filled with illness and disease. T.I.’s ‘Takers’ Character ‘A More Interesting, Challenged Villain’

Tip talks about his ‘complex character’ in film, due August 27. By Shaheem Reid T.I. Photo: Columbia Pictures T.I. is treacherous. He’s cold, he’s calculating and he’s out for millions. As the character Ghost in the upcoming film “Takers,” the beloved King of the South is all of the above, but he also sneaks in a few hysterical one-liners. It’s these multifaceted aspects that lured him to his role in the film. “I wanted to play a more interesting, challenged villain,” Tip said. “I think Ghost, in the end, is the villain, but initially he’s the guy you feel sorry for. Like, ‘Why you doing Ghost like that?’ He got shot, he went and did time. Now they don’t want to do his job. Why not? Later you find out why. He’s a bit of a complex character.” In “Takers,” T.I. plays one in a crew of bank robbers along with Idris Elba, Hayden Christensen, Paul Walker, Michael Ealy and Chris Brown. Ghost was shot and captured during one of the collective’s heists years ago. Fresh out of the pen, Ghost has the info for a mother lode multimillion-dollar job. The catch is, the group just pulled off a robbery and they like to take at least a year off between jobs. Ghost’s plan is to rob an armored car, but they only have a few days to plan and pull it off. At the film’s Hollywood premiere on Wednesday, Tip said he didn’t get an opportunity to take part in many of the movie’s stunts . “To be candid, they wasn’t allowing me to do many stunts myself due to the circumstance of my personal [troubles],” he said. “I witnessed a lot of them: the explosions, the shoot-outs, the chase scene with Chris. They’re outstanding. “We worked hard,” he added. “I think all of this is just a result of the hard work that was put into the project. Everybody gave 150 percent. Nobody laid back, nobody took off — everybody went hard. This is the result of that.” Related Photos ‘Takers’ Premiere Seizes Hollywood Related Artists T.I.

‘Jersey Shore’ Etiquette On Tank Tops, Body Spray And Protecting Your Roomies

Lessons learned from new season of ‘Jersey Shore.’ By Rochell Thomas Snooki and J-Woww on “Jersey Shore” on Thursday Photo: MTV You can learn a lot from a juicehead. At least Jim Cantiello can. Last night our intrepid pop-culture reporter — who was inspired by Snookie and company to visit the Panhandle state — took copious notes on the “Jersey Shore” rules of etiquette. Chief among his lessons learned: Wife beaters are strictly pre-club attire. Got that? According to the Situation, the T-shirt of choice of the brah set is round-the-house wear only. “We wear them before we go out,” Sitch explained. “Right before we go out, we take off the tanks and put on our fresh shirts.” The second lesson of the night came courtesy of Pauly D, who made it very clear that a real Jersey Shore man doesn’t need water to bathe. Apparently, an aerosol can of an Axe-like body spray will suffice. Before their night on the town, Pauly did his personal best to fist-pump the hole in the ozone layer over Florida by spritzing his entire body with the stuff. (Ecosystem? What ecosystem?). Now we know Pauly D is that guy — you know, the one you smell a few seconds before you see him. Greaaat. The third note of the night? Not everyone gets the Situation — especially in Miami. When Mike tries to order pizza, the delivery man thought he was joking when he gave his name. Welcome to Miami, Sitch. Also good to know: Blaming it on the al, al-al-alco, alchohol never gets old. After last week’s brazen three-way kiss in the club, slut puppy Ronnie went home and bragged that he was going to “smush” his ex. “Are you asleep?” he asked an obviously snoozing Sammie before climbing into her bed. When confronted about his free-loving behavior the next day, Ron-Ron used the too-much-booze excuse for his behavior, claiming he blacked out. But the biggest lesson learned from last night’s episode comes courtesy of Angelina, who found out that mack-squashing and jaw-smacking are no way to build a friendship. After having one or two (or 10) too many, the most hated roomie on South Beach (JWoww told her to sleep with one eye open) decided she would watch out for her boy Pauly by thwarting his attempts to hook up with women. She called it “warning” him. He said she was “co–blocking.” She responded by saying that she loved him and wanted to marry him. Then she slapped him for emphasis. Oh, Ang … violence never solves anything. What did you think of last night’s episode of “Jersey Shore”? Let us know in the comments! Watch “Jersey Shore” Thursdays at 10 p.m. ET on MTV. GOP Candidate: Bike Sharing Threatens Our Personal Freedoms

Photo via UberGizmo I’ve always been amazed how much opposition simple ideas like promoting bicycling in urban areas receives. After all, what on earth could be wrong with a program that allows residents to rent bikes at multiple locations around a city as a means to conveniently get around — and get some exercise in the process? Evidently, more than you and I could possibly imagine. The GOP candidate for governor in Colorado has recently attacked the mayor of Denver for instating a successful bike-sharing program, saying that it’s part of a nefarious plot t… Read the full story on TreeHugger

T.I. Calls ‘Takers’ Stunts ‘Outstanding’

‘The explosions, the shootouts, the chase scene with Chris,’ Tip teases at premiere for heist flick co-starring Chris Brown. By Shaheem Reid T.I. at the L.A. premiere of “Takers” Photo: Frazer Harrison/ Getty Images On Wednesday night at the Arclight Cinerama Dome in Hollywood, some of the biggest names in music, including Snoop Dogg and Keri Hilson, came out to support T.I. , Chris Brown and the rest of the cast of “Takers” at the film’s world premiere. Co-stars Idris Elba, Hayden Christensen and Michael Ealy lined the red carpet. Along with Paul Walker — who was absent because of filming for the next installment of “The Fast and the Furious” franchise in Puerto Rico — the trio play members of a team of bank robbers that includes Brown and Tip. In the film, the crew sets out to rob tens of millions of dollars from an armored truck. The action flick is filled with flying bullets, chases and explosions, but the King of the South said he couldn’t really take part in the more physical aspects of filming. “To be candid, they wasn’t allowing me to do many stunts myself,” T.I., who was married over the weekend , said on the red carpet. “Due to the circumstance of my personal [troubles], I witnessed a lot of them [instead]: the explosions, the shootouts, the chase scene with Chris. They’re outstanding.” During filming in early 2009, Tip was in the midst of a legal saga stemming from a federal gun case. “Takers” has been in the vault for quite some time, but neither the action nor the story feels dated, and on August 27 the rest of the world will get to see the stars try to pull off an elaborate heist. “We worked hard,” Tip told MTV News. “We worked hard. I think all of this is just a result of the hard work that was put into the project. Everybody gave 150 percent. Nobody laid back, nobody took off — everybody went hard. This is the result of that.” After the film, you know it’s the afterparty. The stars headed to L.A.’s Boulevard3, where Tip took the stage with Keri Hilson for a performance of “Got Your Back.” Not to be outdone, Chris Brown performed as well. C. Breezy focused on dancing and, midway through his set, hyped the crowd to the sounds of a few other artists’ hit records like “Shots,” “Teach Me How to Dougie” and DJ Khaled’s “All I Do Is Win.” He told anyone over the age of 30 to party like they were 17, before shifting to reggae (he threw in some hip-hop moves). Later, Chris revived some ’90s R&B, singing a bit of R. Kelly’s “Bump N’ Grind” and Montell Jordan’s “This Is How We Do It.” Brown also rocked a handful of songs such as “Deuces” with guest/mixtape partner Tyga. Who are you most excited to see onscreen in “Takers”? Tell us in the comments! Related Photos ‘Takers’ Premiere Seizes Hollywood Related Artists Chris Brown T.I.

A New Mission for Liberty: Ending the Insane Drug War

In 2006, long-time readers may recall that I published an article entitled, “The Bicameral Universe: A Theory of Everything in One Blog Post“. I wrote the article after a flash of revelation while I was under the influence of Cannabis. Whatever any particular person may think of my article, I wrote it as a genuine expression of opinion, having read and thought deeply about the issues of God, man, religion, science, and the Anthropic Principle for many years. The article outlines my personal understanding of God and my place as a free agent in the multiverse. A year later, in 2007, I moved to the state of Hawai`i, where I met one Reverend Roger Christie, the founder of the Hawai`i Cannabis Ministry. On September 8, 2007, I was ordained as a Cannabis Minister in his church. For the past 10 years, Rev. Christie has operated the Ministry openly — one might even say “loudly”. The Ministry is located on the second floor of the Moses Building on Kamahameha Ave in downtown Hilo, right across from Hilo Bay. Indeed, everyone in this part of Hawai`i is entirely aware of the THC-Ministry, because of its central location and because of a large banner that has been hanging for years from the second floor window, declaring, “We Use Cannabis Religiously, And You Can Too!” Hawai`i Cannabis Ministry There is nothing subterranean in the way this Ministry was operated. The Ministry has existed as a transparent part of this community for many years. In fact, in 2008, Roger Christie ran for mayor of the County of Hawai`i as a Cannabis activist. I ought to know: I was a campaign director and webmaster. I attended campaign strategy meetings, and was present when Roger registered with the county as an official Mayoral candidate in the Summer of 2008. Needless to say, we were not successful in getting Rev. Christie elected to the highest office in Hawai`i County, but it was sure fun to try. Over the past two years, Rev. Christie has continued to operate the Hawai`i Cannabis Ministry openly, and the Ministry banner has continued to fly above Hilo Bay for all to see. But on July 8, 2010, everything changed. On that day, the DEA along with a dozen other government agencies descended on the Ministry offices and arrested Reverend Christie, along with 13 members of his flock, charging them with a slew of federal drug trafficking crimes. Details of the arrest have been documented by the Associated Press and by other local news organizations. At this time, Reverend Christie is being held without bail in a federal detention center in Honolulu. He has been appointed a public defender, and his trial has been set for September 8, 2010. Since the arrest, I have contacted our local chapter of the ACLU in an attempt to garner their interest in defending Rev. Christie and the other 13 members of the Ministry currently under federal indictment. For my part, while I am a member of the Ministry and have an interest in pro-Cannabis political activism, I am not now, nor have I ever been involved in the production or distribution of Cannabis. I am an activist, a writer, a thinker. But I have no problem defending the idea that smoking Cannabis is a legitimate spiritual activity that can bring practitioners closer to God and the ultimate meanings of life. Having said all of this, I can no longer stand idly by while my pastor — a man I know to be genuine, simple and honest — is arrested and railroaded by an out-of-control federal authority. Going forward, this publication will lend its support to the defeat of this irrational war on Cannabis, and will expose the damage it has caused to innocent men and women everywhere. Media Mocks Palin Over ‘Refudiate,’ But Obama Given Pass For Gaffes

George W. Bush’s linguistic difficulties , such as “Is our children learning,” “If the terriers and barrifs are torn down, this economy will grow” and “They misunderestimated me” made him the butt of many a joke back in the day, especially since they used to be played on cable news channels. Yet the current occupant of the White House—not to mention his vice president—does not seem to have found the media’s funnybone. Even Barack Obama’s teleprompter problems never got that kind of coverage, neither did that fact that his speeches are written at two grade levels below Bush. Then there was the time in Februrary, when Obama mispronuncicated “corpsman” as “corpse-man” and the media ignored it, or when he said he had been to 57 states and they excused it, the media has jumped all over Sarah Palin’s invention of the word “refudiate.” The word was coined on Fox News July 14, in response to the proposed Cordoba Center in New York City, a $100 million community center and Mosque three blocks from the World Trade Center site, but developed into a full-blown meme Sunday when she posted to Twitter: “Ground Zero Mosque supporters, doesn’t it stab you in the heart as it does ours throughout the heartland? Peaceful Muslims, pls refudiate.” The Los Angeles Times noted that the tweet was quickly edited to say “refute” instead of “refudiate,” writing “While not correct, ‘refute’ was a step up—it can actually be found in the dictionary.”  “Fergalicious,” “truthiness,” “blatherscythe,” “bloviate,” and “sternutation” can also be found in the dictionary—although one might need the unabridged Oxford English Dictionary for that last one. The merciless mocking of Palin by the mainstream media, which began when John McCain selected to be his running mate in 2008, has led to Keith Olbermann almost constantly calling her an “idiot” and a false item from a blog claiming she thought that Africa is a country. The same media outlets which have suddenly become such ardent defenders of the English language and attacked Palin with verbal vorpal blades, have never cared whenever Obama erred in his oratory, rarely bothering to post it in their blogs like they have done with “refudiate.” Jacob Heilbrun at The Huffington Post wrote “Palin isn’t simply trying to bring down big government, but the English language as well.” Liberals, of course, have never tried to coin new words, they just change the definitions of existing ones.

Today Show Highlights Sarah Palin’s ‘Refudiate,’ Skipped Biden Gaffe

NBC’s Peter Alexander, on Tuesday’s Today show, mocked Sarah Palin for making up a word, ‘refudiate’ in her tweets about the Ground Zero mosque controversy. However when Joe Biden, the gaffe machine that he can be, made an arguably much more embarrassing mistake back in March, of falsely asserting that the Irish prime minister’s mother was dead, the Today show, as Newsbusters’ Scott Whitlock reported then , ignored it. Alexander, after initially reporting about the former Alaska governor wading into the controversy surrounding the building of a mosque at the Ground Zero site, then poked fun at Palin combining two words: PETER ALEXANDER: The former vice presidential candidate is, herself, coming under fire for both her substance and style. Palin tweeted “Ground Zero mosque supporters, doesn’t it stab you in the heart, as it does ours, throughout the heartland? Peaceful Muslims, please refudiate. But, of course, “refudiate” isn’t an actual word, more like a blend of two words with similar meanings: refute and repudiate. Bloggers quickly pounced. “If Republicans can demand that immigrants speak English,” one tweeted “can’t we demand same for Sarah Palin?” For what it’s worth, Palin has refudiated before. CLIP OF PALIN ON FOX NEWS: They have power in their words. They could refudiate what it is, that this group is saying. Alexander, then went on to remind viewers of another Republican who got “creative with words.” ALEXANDER: The former Alaska governor isn’t the first politician to get creative with words. CLIP OF GEORGE W. BUSH: They misunderestimated what our campaign is about. However, back on March 19, Alexander, nor any one else on the Today show, highlighted the following quip from Biden during a St. Patrick’s Day event at the White House: JOE BIDEN SPEAKING ABOUT IRELAND’S PRIME MINISTER: His mom lived in Long Island for ten years or so. God rest her soul. And- although, she’s- wait- your mom’s still- your mom’s still alive. Your dad passed. God bless her soul.” The following is the full Alexander segment as it was aired on the July 20 Today show: MATT LAUER: Sarah Palin is wading into the controversy surrounding a proposed mosque near the World Trade Center site. And it’s the language she used on Twitter to express her opinion that’s getting the most attention. NBC’s Peter Alexander is in lower Manhattan. Peter, good morning to you. [On screen headline: “Controversial Comments, Palin Asks Muslims To Reject Ground Zero Mosque”] PETER ALEXANDER: Matt, good morning to you. This is what the battle is all about. A proposed 13-story building to go right here with a gym, an auditorium and a mosque. But as we spin the camera around, let me show you what the problem for many people is. It’s the proximity to what many Americans view as sacred ground, at Ground Zero, just blocks away. Add Sarah Palin to the mix, and it’s a full-blown controversy. She is America’s self-proclaimed “Mama Grizzly” and now Sarah Palin is dipping her paws into another polarizing debate, criticizing a proposal to build a mosque near the World Trade Center site in New York City. Palin tweeted: “Peace-seeking Muslims, please understand Ground Zero mosque is unnecessary provocation; it stabs hearts. Please reject it, in interest of healing.” This latest controversy has unleashed a wave of strong opinions from visitors. UNIDENTIFIED WOMAN: She does not need to be saying anything about anything that’s over here. She doesn’t even live over here. UNIDENTIFIED WOMAN#2: It’s her personal opinion. I don’t think she’s speaking for, you know, speaking for New York or for Alaska or for America. I think she is speaking out of her own, her own thoughts and opinions. ALEXANDER: Developers of the planned $100 million community center and mosque had this response. SHARIF EL-GAMAL, PARK 51 DEVELOPER: I wish she would pick up the phone and come down and say hello to us. Where we are today is all about healing. Is all about building bridges. Is all about outreach. Is all about reaching out to the community, to let them know that there is a moderate Muslim, that there is a voice for the moderate Muslim. ALEXANDER: The former vice presidential candidate is, herself, coming under fire for both her substance and style. ALEXANDER: The former Alaska governor isn’t the first politician to get creative with words. GEORGE W. BUSH: They misunderestimated what our campaign is about. ALEXANDER: As she reminded followers, in yet another tweet, “‘Refudiate, ‘misunderestimate,’ ‘wee-wee’d up.’ English is a living language. Shakespeare liked to coin new words, too. Got to celebrate it! And Sarah Palin will have plenty of time to coin some new words going forward Matt. The scheduled groundbreaking of the site is still years away. LAUER: Alright. Peter Alexander in lower Manhattan for us this morning. Peter, thank you very much.
