Pitbull Saves Family, Loses Leg in Shotgun Blast

Forget having them fight each other (please, Michael Vick ). Pitbulls are much better off at fighting off intruders. In an incredible story from late last month in Virginia, a female pitbull named Lesteye sprung into action when a burglar broke into her family’s home. According to various reports, the canine leaped in front of a shotgun bullet meant for her owner, shattering her shoulder and tearing off soft tissue in the process. The pet had to have its leg amputated as a result of this life-saving move, but once the Atlantic Animal Hospital posted her story on Facebook, something else incredible happened: Donations poured in for the dog’s surgery. Over $1,000 was raised and Dr. Michele Leatherbury now says the pitbull has an “excellent” chance at living a healthy life. Learn more in this video: Pitbull Sacrifices Leg to Save Family

Man Passes Out Drunk, Wakes Up With No Penis

Dominican man Geraldo Ramos recently passed out drunk and woke up missing something lost a lot less frequently than one’s car keys, wallet or dignity: His penis. Man Wakes Up With No Penis The 45-year-old has no clue where his penis went, but neighbors told a local TV station that Ramos was attacked by a dog when he was drunk. Ramos, naturally, has no recollection of this. The alleged dog, BTW, has not been found. It’s unclear what the next course of action is after this sort of thing happens … but at least this Arkansas man who lost a testicle to a dog has company.

Man Adopts Stray Dog, Awakens to Discover Testicle Gone

This seems to be the week of strange animal stories. The other day it was the roaming gang of street cats , and today it is a stray dog gone wrong. Taking in a stray dog is such a selfless act. Giving an animal a home is usually paid back in spades by the adoring love of the new mutt.  And then, sometimes, the dog chews your nuts off . An Arkansas man, who for obvious reasons wished to remain nameless when recounting his story, found himself in that exact position. He took in a “small, white, and fluffy” stray dog, slept in the nude, and woke up to discover the dog had eaten one of his testicles. The man is paralyzed and was awoken due to “burning pain” only to find the dog’s muzzle and paws covered in blood. He was treated at St. Bernards (seriously?) Regional Medical Center. The dog who had been docile in the previous days, was ultimately euthanized and will be tested for rabies.  Moral of the story: Don’t sleep naked with a strange dog.

Amazing Puppy Recovers from Splayed Leg Syndrome, Learns to Walk and Play

We need some inspirational dog stories right about now. Over the weekend, a woman was found in a feces-filled hotel room with six canines. Days prior to that incident, a St. Louis resident was arrested for burning her sister’s pet in the backyard. But meet Max. AMAZING Max, we should say. The Boston Terrier was taken in by The Mia Foundation at six weeks old after being diagnosed with Swimmer Puppy Syndrome, an affliction that results in a flat chest and sternum.  Typically, dogs with such an ailment are euthanized because they cannot sit, stand or walk… but try telling that to Max! Watch this video to see how far he came in just two weeks of training: Boston Terrier Recovers, Learns to Walk

Schoep, Dog at Center of Beloved Internet Photo, Dies at 20

One of the Internet’s most beloved animals has passed away. Schoep – a dog made famous when a touching picture of him and his owner, John Unger, went viral last summer – died Thursday at the age of 20. Photographer Hannah Stonehouse Hudson snapped the famous image of Unger lying in Lake Superior with his pet because the water was therapeutic for Schoep’s arthritis. In response, thousands of dollars poured in from Web users to help with the canine’s ailment. “Schoep and John had an amazing relationship … I hope that people can give John some space and privacy for now … he just lost his best friend,” Stonehouse Hudson told The Pioneer Press. Unger himself broke the sad news of Schoep’s death on Facebook, writing “I Breathe But I Can’t Catch My Breath… Schoep passed yesterday[,] more information in the days ahead.”

Raccoon Eats, Steals Cats’ Food in Hilarious Escape

Raccoons are notorious scavengers and thieves, but you’ve got to see the way in which this one escapes after pulling a heist on some cats’ food. In the video below, the masked bandit strolls nonchalantly over to a group of cats, casually brushes them aside and stars helping himself to a feast. Interestingly, he appears to mix their dry cat food and water together to make a cereal of sorts while a trio of felines stand around, looking a bit perplexed. The best part, though? As the cats begin to get testy, the thief grabs what he can and makes a LOL-tastic exit from the scene of the crime. Watch: Raccoon Eats, Steals Cats’ Food

Bear Safety Video: Unintentionally Hilarious, Possibly Useful Tips

This local news segment offers the bear necessities when it comes to warding off a giant ursine creature in the woods. Or any other living thing for that matter. Following a story about a man who faced down a bear, reporter Julie Tremmel of Providence, R.I.’s local NBC affiliate WJAR did a segment on bear safety. Her intentions were no doubt good, but the end result was at least a solid 7 or 8 on the unintentionally comedy meter. Watch below and see for yourself: Bear Safety Video So if you meet a bear in the woods, just make like Tremmel. Dart your eyes wildly, side to side, and wave your hands in the air like you just don’t care! Then curl up in the dirt as the confused animal laughs, concludes it probably isn’t worth the trouble, shakes his head and ambles back into the forest.
