Sarah Palin Movie Coming Soon to Theater, Presidential Campaign Near You

For a while now, Sarah Palin has been the X-factor in the quest for the Republican presidential nomination in 2012. The former Alaska governor has a few hurdles to clear before officially declaring her candidacy — not the least of which is her abdication of her office in 2009 with more than a year left in her term, which raised concerns in the GOP about her ability to lead and/or follow through. But! That’s nothing a pro-Palin documentary — made with her cooperation and debuting next month — shouldn’t be able to fix.

Despite Kung Fu Panda 2, Female Animation Directors Are Few and Far Between

In this age of director-as-personality — witness Todd Phillips’ hilariously brash interview tactics as the most recent example of this phenomenon — it’s rare that a blockbuster hits theaters with someone anonymous behind the camera. Which is what makes the release of Kung Fu Panda 2 so extraordinaire. Despite being the sequel to one of the bigger animations hits of the last five years, precious little has been written about its director, Jennifer Yuh Nelson. Though that might have more to do with her gender than anything else.

The Vanishing Of The Bees

Honeybees have been mysteriously disappearing across the planet, literally vanishing from their hives. Known as Colony Collapse Disorder, this phenomenon has brought beekeepers to crisis in an industry responsible for producing apples, broccoli, watermelon, onions, cherries and a hundred other fruits and vegetables. Commercial honeybee operations pollinate crops that make up one out of every three bites of food on our tables. Vanishing of the Bees follows commercial beekeepers David Hackenberg and Dave Mendes as they strive to keep their bees healthy and fulfill pollination contracts across the U.S. The film explores the struggles they face as the two friends plead their case on Capital Hill and travel across the Pacific Ocean in the quest to protect their honeybees. Filming across the US, in Europe, Australia and Asia, this documentary examines the alarming disappearance of honeybees and the greater meaning it holds about the relationship between mankind and mother earth. As scientists puzzle over the cause, organic beekeepers indicate alternative reasons for this tragic loss. Conflicting options abound and after years of research, a definitive answer has not been found to this harrowing mystery. added by: JanforGore

Nikki Reed Gushes About ‘Twilight’ Co-Stars’ Upcoming Projects

‘We all root for each other,’ she tells MTV News. By Kara Warner Nikki Reed Photo: MTV News Ever since the first “Twilight” film was released — kicking off the phenomenon that has included record-breaking box-office numbers, fainting fans, megawatt premieres, etc. — the suddenly superstar cast has been catapulted into a spotlight none of them saw coming. As such, the actors are very much in demand and currently working on a number of projects. When Nikki Reed stopped by MTV News recently to discuss her film “Last Day of Summer,” we asked her which of her co-stars’ upcoming films she’s most excited to see. “All of them,” she said. “I love Taylor [Lautner] so much, and I’m so proud of him and what he’s doing. He’s making a great movie in Pittsburgh right now,” she said, referring to the John Singleton-directed action thriller “Abduction.” “I’m excited about Rob [Pattinson]’s movie ‘Water for Elephants,’ ” she added. “I think he’s going to be phenomenal in that, and Kristen [Stewart] is doing an amazing film [‘On the Road’]. Elizabeth Reaser just did a movie called ‘Homework’ with Michael Angarano, who’s a really good friend of mine, and Emma Roberts that I’m excited about.” Reed and her co-stars have so many projects going that she was hard-pressed to remember everyone’s work schedule. “We all root for each other,” she said. Speaking of which, the multi-talented and multi-tasking actress, who recently directed Sage’s music video for “Edie Sedgwick,” lit up at our question about whether she would consider directing a music video for her co-star Jackson Rathbone’s band, 100 Monkeys. “Would I ever! Jackson and I are on the phone every other day, because we’re trying to find a movie to do together. I forgot to mention him — his band is skyrocketing. It’s amazing,” she gushed. “I would be honored. I don’t want to take the position: ‘Would I ever.’ If he would ever let me, yeah. I love them.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com .

Growing problem of abandoned babies in Malaysia

Malaysian authorities are grappling with the mounting problem of abandoned babies. Sixty-five infants have been found so far this year, and many were dead by the time they were discovered. The issue has touched a raw nerve in the Muslim-majority country. The government fears that number will surpass previous totals – an average of 100 babies are found each year. They were left in rubbish bins, on doorsteps and on the streets, prompting the government to consider treating cases as murder or attempted murder. The latest abandoned baby, a newborn infant, was found dumped by a riverside, covered in a towel and a piece of cloth and stuffed into a bag. The gruesome finds have encouraged some observers to point the finger at familiar targets: internet pornography, bad parenting, and an over-exposure to sexually liberal western culture. But the phenomenon has also revived a debate over sex education in schools in a country where young people are taught abstinence, and where having a child out of wedlock is seen as deeply shameful. Social workers say this attitude simply drives many desperate women to abandon their babies. The government is trying to tackle the problem by increasing the penalty for the offense, asking police to treat such cases as murder or attempted murder. But there have been other approaches. One charity recently opened the country's first “baby hatch” – a place where mothers can safely and anonymously leave their unwanted child. The southern state of Malacca believes the way to curb the problem is to allow Muslim girls under the age of 16 to marry; it has also proposed opening a school for pregnant teenagers. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-pacific-11050427 added by: ampersand

Scientists stunned as bee populations continue to decline

Scientists remain stymied as honeybees in the United States and across the world continue to die in large numbers. Lately there seems to be a lot of talk about bees, honey bees in particular. In recent years, there has been a drastic and mysterious die-off of honey bee colonies. Although not unusual in the bee business, this latest decline in populations has many people talking. Although there is an increasing demand for pollination services, the number of honey bee colonies has dropped to about 2.5 million from more than 4 million in the 1970′s. There are several reasons as to why this may be happening: loss of habitat, pesticide use, unspecified fungal diseases or mite infestations. Scientists now believe that much of the decline is due to Colony Collapse Disorder, or CCD, which refers to the unexplained disappearance and dying off of honey bee colonies. Little is known about CCD, and that has many beekeepers, farmers and the general public worried. “There are a lot of beekeepers who are in trouble” said David Mendes, president of the American Beekeeping Federation. “Under normal condition you have 10 percent winter losses … this year there are 30, 40 to 50 percent losses.” For many years, beekeepers have been plagued by colony collapse disorder, in which formerly healthy bees abruptly vanish from their hives. The number of beehives in the United States dropped 32 percent in 2007, another 36 percent in 2008 and still another 29 percent in 2009. A number of explanations for the phenomenon have been suggested, including diseases, parasites, malnutrition, but toxic chemicals are emerging as a major concern among beekeepers. Under Pressure, Teachers Tamper With Tests

Cheat Sheet Articles in this series will examine cheating in education and efforts to stop it. The staff of Normandy Crossing Elementary School outside Houston eagerly awaited the results of state achievement tests this spring. For the principal and assistant principal, high scores could buoy their careers at a time when success is increasingly measured by such tests. For fifth-grade math and science teachers, the rewards were more tangible: a bonus of $2,850. Dianne Edwards, top, and Tonia Bush, principal and assistant principal of a school near Houston, resigned in a scandal. But when the results came back, some seemed too good to be true. Indeed, after an investigation by the Galena Park Independent School District, the principal, assistant principal and three teachers resigned May 24 in a scandal over test tampering. The district said the educators had distributed a detailed study guide after stealing a look at the state science test by “tubing” it — squeezing a test booklet, without breaking its paper seal, to form an open tube so that questions inside could be seen and used in the guide. The district invalidated students’ scores. Of all the forms of academic cheating, none may be as startling as educators tampering with children’s standardized tests. But investigations in Georgia, Indiana, Massachusetts, Nevada, Virginia and elsewhere this year have pointed to cheating by educators. Experts say the phenomenon is increasing as the stakes over standardized testing ratchet higher — including, most recently, taking student progress on tests into consideration in teachers’ performance reviews. Colorado passed a sweeping law last month making teachers’ tenure dependent on test results, and nearly a dozen other states have introduced plans to evaluate teachers partly on scores. Many school districts already link teachers’ bonuses to student improvement on state assessments. Houston decided this year to use the data to identify experienced teachers for dismissal, and New York City will use it to make tenure decisions on novice teachers. added by: 2helenahandbasket

Taylor Momsen Performs in a Slutty Outfit of the Day

Taylor Momsen’s career has been on a downward slope since she was the singing 8 year old who couldn’t sing on the Grinch who Stole Christmas…..Sure she had this Gossip Girl stint that threw her in this phenomenon that all the young girls were into, that made her feel famous, and that gave her the confidence to become a rockstar, which is so fucking weird, because at 16, you can’t really channel much to justify your music, or why your privileged ass is dressed like a homeless prostitute….it makes the whole thing more bullshit that you probably originally thought and I’m calling her rock career some Disney candy coated garbage that sucks…but at least she wears lingerie when she performs, because all 16 year olds should publicly wear lingerie, ideally in countries like Canada and England where you can’t get arrested for jerking off to them like you were the Dancing with the Stars football player…. SMBC Theater Creates the Perfect MMORPG (The One)

Filed under: Videos , Gaming , The One Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal is a great webcomic and it’s also a live-action web show (called SMBC Theater ) that occasionally displays flashes of brilliance. Recently, SMBC Theater skewered the phenomenon of massively multiplayer online roleplaying games — think World of Warcraft — in what might be the best episode yet. Even better, they’ve put their fake MMO online, so you can play it for yourself. The game is just a giant “Click Me” button that gives you a point every time you click. As one character says, “It’s like an MMO, but they stripped out all the pointless bells and whistles.” MMORPGs are a really easy target, but online gaming addiction has come back in a big way with Facebook games like Farmville, so the phenomenon is ripe for mockery once again. The funny part is that the leaderboard of the fake game has some seriously huge numbers of clicks. Whether it’s WoW , Farmville or just clicking, I guess we all just want to collect points.
