Filipinos Crucified As Atonement Of Sins On Good Friday

An annual religious ritual disapproved by church leaders in the predominantly Roman Catholic country, Filipino devotees had themselves nailed to crosses on Good Friday to remember Jesus Christ’s suffering and death. In San Fernando City, at least 23 people were nailed to crosses in three villages to mark Good Friday.Foreigners were not allowed in participating this year except as spectators, Ching Pangilinan stated, a city tourism officer and one of the organizers. The ban was imposed after some foreigners took part in previous years just to make a film or make fun of the rites. “We don’t want them to just make a mockery out of the tradition of the people here,” Pangilinan said. The event drew more than 10,000 Philippine and foreign spectators.  Devotees dressed in robes and tin crowns walked to a dusty mound carrying wooden crosses on their backs. At the mound, men crucified their hands and feet. Ruben Enaje, a 49-year-old sign painter devotee who was nailed to a cross for the 24th time as his way of thanking God for his survival after falling from a building. Mary Jane Mamangon, a 34-year-old rice cake vendor, was the lone female devotee to be nailed to a cross this year in San Juan village. It was her 14th time.  According to Mamangon, she started this ritual when she was 18 and has taken part in the annual rites on and off to seek God’s help in saving her ill grandmother and now her younger sister, who is suffering from cancer. “I do it because I have seen that it works,” she told The Associated Press. “I saw how my grandmother recovered from her illness.” Mamangon said she has faith that God will take care of her and her family. Similar rites took place in nearby Bulacan province, while in other parts of the country, half-dressed, barefooted penitents walked the streets, whipping their bloody backs with pieces of wood dangling from ropes as a way to atone for sins. Church leaders disapprove of such practices. The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) stated that the real expression of Christian faith during Lent is through repentance and self-renewal, not flagellation or crucifixion. Bishop Rolando Tirona of the Prelature of Infanta said flagellation and cross nailings are expressions of superstitious beliefs, and are usually done out of need for money or to encourage tourism, which make them wrong. About 80 percent of the Philippine population of more than 90 million are Roman Catholic. Post-Palin Alaska has largest debt burden in US

teapartiers: please take notice and stop letting sarah palin play you like suckers. this is what a modern fiscal conservative looks like. “Sarah Palin has long sold herself as a fiscal conservative, arguing against the Democrats' health overhaul on the grounds that the nation simply can't afford it. But when the former vice presidential candidate resigned as governor of Alaska in the summer of 2009, she left the state with a 70 percent debt-to-GDP ratio — the highest state debt burden in the United States. That's according to data compiled by the Washington Independent's Megan Carpentier, who notes that Alaska has a debt burden similar to “that of Jordan and Palin's favorite health care resource, Canada, and a higher ratio than Ghana, Cote d

Warwick Mall Flood Pictures from the Rhode Island Flood (RI)

The pictures from the Warwick Mall Flood are simply devastating. These pictures make Rhode Island in the developed country of the United States look like a third world country. The floods remind me of the recent devastating floods in Asia. Places like the Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand and more were hit by powerful rains and typhoons and eventually got engulfed in the flood waters. Though no one was expecting this to happen to the USA. We had our pre-shock with New Orleans when Katrina hit. Now looking at these pics from the Rhode Island Flood, it is quite shocking to see it happen again. Please help the people from Rhode Island rebuild. It may take time but with help from everyone, they are sure to recover from this flood. There are info and more pics and videos from this flood. Most especially from the Warwick Mall Flood Pictures from the Rhode Island Flood incident. We all need to be aware of this. Rescues are stil being made from the Rhode Island Flood. It is reported that there are still people trapped in the RI Warwick Mall Flood. Justin Bieber Fans Come From All Over The World To ‘View’ Taping

‘I came all the way from the Philippines to see Justin,’ one fan says. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Rya Backer Justin Bieber performs on “The View” on Monday Photo: ABC While the crowd inside “The View” studio on Monday (March 22) was full of women who traveled from all over to hear the opinions of the show’s five hosts, the crowd outside the studio was mostly full of teenage girls hoping to either get inside to see Justin Bieber perform or, at the very least, catch a glimpse of him leaving the studio. How long had they been waiting? “Well, since 1 o’clock [Sunday], but then we went home and took a break, but then we saw people here at 10 o’clock at night so then we came down and that’s when we started waiting,” April Augostineloi told MTV News. “We’ve waited for so long, we went to the Roosevelt Field Mall. We never go to see him. We’ve only went to one concert … and the concert was amazing and we really hope we get to see him. We really like him a lot.” Another fan, Amanda Pine, also waited hours to try and see Bieber on the show. “Well, I would bust out crying,” she shared, adding that she too missed out on a chance to see him at the mall. ” ‘Cause we waited at the mall for 22 hours and we got inside and when they said it was canceled, we just busted out crying.” Cassidy Mavros said that she had been waiting to see Bieber since 4 a.m. “He’s hot!” she exclaimed. “I will cry. We’ve been here since 4 this morning. We got up at, like, 2 [a.m.].” Lauren Famiano may have been on line earlier, if she and her pals hadn’t gotten lost on their way to “The View” studios. “I’m gonna cry. We’ve been here since 2 o’clock in the morning and we got lost here, so I hope we get in. We got here at like, 6:30, but we got lost in the city,” she explained. “So we had to find our way here.” Another fan, Stephanie DaSilva, added that if she didn’t get into the show she would “flip out … I woke up mad early for this. I told my teacher I would be here.” “Well, it’s my birthday on April 19, so I came all the way from the Philippines to see Justin Bieber,” fan Clara Giron explained. “I saw it on the Internet. I dragged my mom. I told my mom I’m going to see Justin Bieber here. I’m lined up. I’m starting to cry now. All my friends are Justin Bieber fans and I can’t believe I’m here,” she said. “Hopefully he sees this video — I want to tell him come over to the Philippines; everyone loves him there.” Related Videos Sneak Peek: ‘The Diary Of Justin Bieber’ Related Photos Behind-The-Scenes Of ‘Diary Of Justin Bieber’: Chelsea Piers Behind-The-Scenes Of ‘Diary Of Justin Bieber’: Paris

Jay-Z Performs For Stevie Wonder, Other Stars In Atlantic City

MC enjoys a late dinner with Wonder, Robin Thicke after show, then catches Manny Pacquiao/ Joshua Clottey boxing match. By Shaheem Reid Jay-Z performs in Atlantic City on Saturday Photo: Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa Jay-Z doesn’t just bring out the stars out onstage — earlier this month at New York’s Madison Square Garden , for example, Shaquille O’Neal, LeBron James, Diddy, Rick Ross and Gwyneth Paltrow were among the spectators taking in his BP3 show (and while Lil Wayne appeared onstage during Young Jeezy’s opening set , he probably caught some of Jigga’s show from backstage). And for Jay’s sold-out Saturday night show at the Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa in Atlantic City, New Jersey, Stevie Wonder, Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps, Fantasia, Adrienne Bailon, Robin Thicke and two of the “Real Housewives of New Jersey,” Teresa Giudice and Jacqueline Laurita, were in the audience. The show was a tough one for Memphis Bleek, who always performs with Jay. Bleek’s friend and artist G Baby died early Saturday morning after reportedly being shot in New York. Bleek tweeted about G Baby over the weekend, saying, “I’m in a mood I can’t explain. I lost a real n—a 2day. R.I.P. to my n—a G Baby who was like a bro to me!! G. Baby …” Memph stayed strong through the show and helped Jay pull off another successful performance, as they brought the crowd to its feet with classics like “Big Pimpin’ ” and new hits like “Run This Town.” Jay celebrated after the show at the Old Homestead restaurant in the Borgata, where he had a late dinner with Wonder and Thicke, a rep for the venue told MTV News. Jay — being the avid sports fan he is — took in the Manny Pacquiao/ Joshua Clottey boxing match on one of the big screen TVs. Jay references the pugilist from the Philippines on Blueprint 3 ‘s “Thank You,” saying “On the tube, I’m just watching Pacquio box ’em up.” After the 12-round fight, Thicke went to Borgata’s club mur.mur, where Samantha Ronson had spun earlier in the night. Sam’s sister Charlotte Ronson, Angela from “Jersey Shore” and Phelps were among the partygoers. Meanwhile, Jay hit the blackjack tables accompanied by Beyonc

Apple admits using child labour and poisoning workers

Apple has admitted that child labour was used at the factories that build its computers, iPods and mobile phones. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/apple/7330986/Apple-admits-using-child-lab… At least eleven 15-year-old children were discovered to be working last year in three factories which supply Apple. The company did not name the offending factories, or say where they were based, but the majority of its goods are assembled in China. Apple also has factories working for it in Taiwan, Singapore, the Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand, the Czech Republic and the United States. Apple said the child workers are now no longer being used, or are no longer underage. “In each of the three facilities, we required a review of all employment records for the year as well as a complete analysis of the hiring process to clarify how underage people had been able to gain employment,” Apple said, in an annual report on its suppliers. Apple has been repeatedly criticised for using factories that abuse workers and where conditions are poor. Last week, it emerged that 62 workers at a factory that manufactures products for Apple and Nokia had been poisoned by n-hexane, a toxic chemical that can cause muscular degeneration and blur eyesight. Apple has not commented on the problems at the plant, which is run by Wintek, in the Chinese city of Suzhou. A spokesman for Wintek said that “almost all” of the affected workers were back at work, but that some remained in hospital. Wintek said n-hexane was commonly used in the technology industry, and that problems had arisen because some areas of the factory were not ventilated properly. Last year, an employee at Foxconn, the Taiwanese company that is one of Apple's biggest suppliers, committed suicide after being accused of stealing a prototype for the iPhone. Sun Danyong, 25, was a university graduate working in the logistics department when the prototype went missing. An investigation revealed that the factory's security staff had beaten him, and he subsequently jumped to his death from the 12th floor of his apartment building. Foxconn runs a number of super-factories in the south of China, some of which employ as many as 300,000 workers and form self-contained cities, complete with banks, post offices and basketball courts. It has been accused, however, of treating its employees extremely harshly. China Labor Watch, a New York-based NGO, accused Foxconn of having an “inhumane and militant” management, which neglects basic human rights. Foxconn's management were not available for comment. In its report, Apple revealed the sweatshop conditions inside the factories it uses. Apple admitted that at least 55 of the 102 factories that produce its goods were ignoring Apple's rule that staff cannot work more than 60 hours a week. The technology company's own guidelines are already in breach of China's widely-ignored labour law, which sets out a maximum 49-hour week for workers. Apple also said that one of its factories had repeatedly falsified its records in order to conceal the fact that it was using child labour and working its staff endlessly. “When we investigated, we uncovered records and conducted worker interviews that revealed excessive working hours and seven days of continuous work,” Apple said, adding that it had terminated all contracts with the factory. Only 65 per cent of the factories were paying their staff the correct wages and benefits, and Apple found 24 factories where workers had not even been paid China's minimum wage of around 800 yuan (Pounds76) a month. Meanwhile, only 61 per cent of Apple's suppliers were following regulations to prevent injuries in the workplace and a mere 57 per cent had the correct environmental permits to operate. The high environmental cost of Apple's products was revealed when three factories were discovered to be shipping hazardous waste to unqualified disposal companies. Apple said it had required the factories to “perform immediate inspections of their wastewater discharge systems” and hire an independent environmental consultant to prevent future violations. However, Apple has not stopped using the factories. In 2008, Apple found that a total of 25 child workers had been employed to build iPods, iPhones and its range of computers. added by: animalia_libero

8.8 Magnitude Earthquake off the coast of Chile

A massive 8.8-magnitude earthquake capable of tremendous damage struck central Chile early Saturday, shaking the capital for a minute and half and setting off a tsunami. Buildings collapsed and phone lines and electricity were down, making the extent of the damage difficult to determine. The quake hit 200 miles (325 kilometers) southwest of the capital, Santiago, and at a depth of 22 miles (35 kilometers) at 3:34 a.m. (0634 GMT; 1:34 a.m. EST), the U.S. Geological Survey reported. Its epicenter was just 70 miles (115 kilometers) from Concepcion, Chile's second-largest city, where more than 200,000 people live along the Bio Bio river, and 60 miles from the ski town of Chillan, a gateway to Andean ski resorts that was destroyed in a 1939 earthquake. Buildings shook and collapsed in Santiago. With phone lines down, confirmation of damage was difficult elsewhere, especially further south toward the epicenter. The quake was felt in Argentina as well. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a warning for Chile and Peru, and a less-urgent tsunami watch for Ecuador, Colombia, Panama, Costa Rica and Antarctica. “Sea level readings indicate a tsunami was generated. It may have been destructive along coasts near the earthquake epicenter and could also be a threat to more distant coasts,” the center said. The U.S. west coast tsunami warning center said it did not expect a tsunami along the west of the U.S. or Canada but was continuing to monitor the situation. The largest earthquake ever recorded struck the same area of Chile on May 22, 1960. The magnitude-9.5 quake killed 1,655 people and left 2 million homeless. The tsunami that it caused killed people in Hawaii, Japan and the Philippines and caused damage to the west coast of the United States.
