TRAILER: Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master — Is Scientology on Blast?

A war veteran (Joaquin Phoenix) with a “nervous condition” finds himself entrenched in a cult — if not a religious cult, at least a cult of personality — built around a charismatic leader (Philip Seymour Hoffman) in Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master . At long last, after a series of enigmatic teases, the first full trailer has hit the web offering more than just abstract , beguiling peeks at the rumored Scientology drama. So how much L. Ron Hubbard is there in Hoffman’s Master? The trailer alights on Phoenix’s Freddie Sutton as he wanders into the world of writer, doctor, nuclear physicist, and theoretical philosopher Lancaster Dodd, whose Hubbard-esque writings are glimpsed. (The way Dodd pens the dedication of his novel — “As a gift to Homo Sapiens” — is a bit of scripting brilliance that hints at Dodd’s grandiose, bombastic personality in just a single glance.) Things seem innocent enough as Dodd and his wife (Amy Adams) welcome his new charge into the fold. “We’ll urge you toward existence within a group, a society of family,” Dodd says. Like Scientology, this group promises self-improvement through community, though suspense kicks in as an accuser drops the c-word — “cult” — sending Dodd’s group onto a more sinister path. “The only way to defend ourselves is to attack,” Adams spits. It all certainly seems to be calling out Scientology and its founder, moreso the unflattering public image of its followers in the eyes of the outside world — organized faith-peddlers masking dubious claims behind their eccentric figurehead, desperate to protect themselves against scrutiny or worse. It might not seem so Scientology-esque if the tales of ex-members exiting the group weren’t so dramatic , or if Katie Holmes hadn’t reportedly been followed by a gang of Church members following her separation from Tom Cruise, the kind of crazy story that highlights the organization’s more bizarre characteristics. But does The Master really seem to be about Scientology at its core? Not much is apparent so far. The parallels are there – the author-turned-spiritual leader, the cult-like tendencies, the insular power dynamic within and without, not to mention the suggestion that it’s all a sham — and maybe Anderson’s taking an overt jab at the Church by using the bones of Scientology’s story to set up his own. But Anderson’s films explore larger human themes within narrow, specific worlds; it feels reductive to call The Master a Scientology movie just yet, though how much specific criticism can be drawn from the story remains to be seen. So forget the Scientology ties for a moment. This trailer looks fantastic, and though it hints at much more of the plot than we’ve seen previously, it’s still tantalizingly mysterious. Most surprising is Amy Adams, who commands attention as Dodd’s wife with glimpses of a mousy-to-Lady Macbethian arc throughout the trailer. ‘Breaking Dawn’ And ‘Dark Knight Rises’: The Trouble With Trailers

Josh Horowitz takes a stand against the teaser-trailer obsession. By Josh Horowitz Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson in “Breaking Dawn – Part 2” Photo: This is the actual thing. It’s not the preview of the thing. It’s not the tease of the preview of the thing. It’s not even the glimpse of the tease of the preview of the thing. It’s the actual thing. I know — weird, right? If you’re an insatiable consumer of media like me (and if you’re not, you’re in the wrong place. Go commune with nature, you hippie; I’m juggling an iPad, a laptop and a Blackberry with one hand!), you’re probably getting sick of the parsing out of “exclusives” during the last few months. I write the following acknowledging there’s some hypocrisy here. I (and MTV News) am after all guilty of exactly what I’m claiming to be tired of: the teaser culture. But I’m taking a stand — I hereby go on record saying I am officially sick of 10-second previews of previews. As I write this Tuesday (June 19) morning, a bunch of new trailers and teases and commercials (figuring out the appropriate terminology is a headache in and of itself) just landed on the Interwebs. Perhaps most notable in your world is the latest from “Breaking Dawn – Part 2” that came out Tuesday morning. Yes, Summit has released what it calls a “ten-second sneak peek of the teaser trailer” in anticipation of the actual teaser trailer for said movie, which presumably will give way to a non-teaser (er, regular?) trailer in a few months. Still with me? Now don’t get me wrong: I love seeing early imagery from films I’m anxiously awaiting, but this is not the way to do it. At least not for me. Mind you, this snippet is still worlds better than the time-honored entertainment-show tradition of showing snippets of an exclusive trailer while a breathless correspondent narrates exactly what you’re seeing. “There’s Bella! And there’s Edward!” Yeah, we see that. Thanks, Billy Bush. Also out Tuesday morning are two examples of advertisements for upcoming flicks that definitely get things right, in my estimation. In the — let’s call it “traditional” — category, there’s the brand-new trailer for “The Dark Knight Rises,” which frankly doesn’t show a ton more than we’ve seen already. But it does package the material so artfully, with a keen sense of self-serious awesomeness (“This year a fire will rise” — yes! ), that I doff my broken cowl in its favor. And then there’s my personal obsession, the latest work from Paul Thomas Anderson, “The Master.” The second of what I’m guessing will be a series of shorts (calling these trailers doesn’t do them justice) has been released, and each is slowly but surely introducing the upcoming flick’s key figures. (Joaquin Phoenix is going to steal the film! Wait, no, I take it back — it’s Philip Seymour Hoffman’s movie!) Make no mistake, “The Master” is the “Dark Knight Rises” for the Sight & Sound -subscribing crowd this year. Of course, this assortment of teases/ trailers/ shorts/ whatever doesn’t even get into the most interesting area of film advertising going today — let’s call it the viral short. “Prometheus” may have divided fanboys, but I think we all can agree that “Happy birthday David” was mesmerizing and creepy in all the right ways. So where is the viral video of the Cullens sitting at home watching a “True Blood” marathon? Oh, the possibilities … For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Jillian Michaels Welcomes Son AND Adopted Daughter!

The Biggest Loser host Jillian Michaels is doling out unconditional, rather than tough love to a two-year-old daughter, Lukensia – whom she recently brought home from Haiti after a long and arduous adoption process. She also welcomed a son , Phoenix, that partner Heidi Rhoades gave birth to May 3! “We’re swimming in babies over here,” Michaels, 38, told People of her new life. The two-year journey that led her to her daughter ended with an incredible twist of fate as Rhoades, 31, delivered their son the same week Lukensia arrived. The instant family makes for long days and nights for Michaels. But the fitness fanatic insists that despite the hardship, she wouldn’t have it any other way. “I don’t even answer email anymore. I don’t have time to care about anything else,” she notes. “I want to be really present and enjoy all the nuances of their growth and development. I don’t want to rush any of it.” Congratulations to the whole, growing family! [Photo: WENN.com]

The Master Teaser: Joaquin Phoenix Menaces in First Glimpse at P.T. Anderson’s Latest

I hesitate to even post this video — part fever dream, part vaguely authorized marketing blip, yet utterly curiosity-stoking glimpse at what appears to be Paul Thomas Anderson’s forthcoming The Master . Joaquin Phoenix, take it away. The clip made its way to Twitter via YouTube just a little while ago. It was originally housed at the account ” Al Rose Promotions ” — an account named after the real estate man whom Daniel Plainview consults about the Bandy tract in There Will Be Blood — and linked out to themasterfilm.com , so there’s definitely something there beyond Phoenix’s machete-sharpening, beach-brawling, mechanically disposed grunt under interrogation by The Man. Suggestions welcome, but I’m inclined to take the mystery for now.

Beyotches Ain’t Isht: Phoenix Woman Popped For Faking The Breast Cancer Funk To Raise Funds For New Fun-Bags

There is a special place in flat-chested Hell for this trick. Phoenix Woman Arrested For Faking Cancer To Get Breast Implants A Phoenix woman has been charged with fraud and theft after allegedly telling people she had cancer and needed treatment when in fact she just wanted the money to pay for breast implants. According to cops, 27-year-old Jamie Lynn Toler told her former boss — and even her own mother and grandparents — she needed a double mastectomy and breast reconstruction and didn’t have insurance. They all chipped in, authorities say, and helped Toler organize fundraisers that pulled in more than $8,000. Medical records obtained by Mesa police show she didn’t have cancer and paid a plastic surgeon with the cash. Toler was arrested Wednesday and released on bond the next day after a brief appearance in Maricopa County Superior Court. Really??? We’re D-cups REALLY that important to you?!?! Demi Lovato Announces Summer Tour Dates

North American jaunt kicks off in June and wraps up at the beginning of September. By Jocelyn Vena Demi Lovato Photo: Timothy Hiatt/Getty Images Demi Lovato is ready to give your heart a break on her just-announced summer tour. The Unbroken singer will take her act on the road beginning in June. The trek will kick off on June 12 in California, before circling around the country for 21 dates with stops in Phoenix, Las Vegas, Boston and one stop in Toronto, Canada. The tour will run through the summer, wrapping up on September 1 in Salem, Oregon. Lovato hit the road last fall to promote the album. That smaller Stateside tour was featured in her MTV documentary, “Stay Strong.” She also recently completed a tour in South America. This time around, Lovato is expected to bring Hot Chelle Rae and Owl City with her. Unbroken just went platinum, celebrating sales of more than one million since its September release. She recently dropped the album’s second single, “Give Your Heart a Break,” as well as the music video earlier this month. While Lovato has been open about her personal struggles, she didn’t want this album to be exclusively about them. “I didn’t want to come out with this depressing album. I think it’s important that I kept a lot of my heart open on the album because I talked about my personal issues,” she told MTV News. “But I also had some fun dance songs on there for people to enjoy.” Demi’s summer tour dates, according to her label:

‘Catching Fire’ Director: Who Could Carry The Torch?

As Gary Ross’ ‘Hunger Games’ future becomes uncertain, Hobnobbing scopes out other directors well-suited for the film. By Amy Wilkinson Jennifer Lawrence in “The Hunger Games” Photo: Lionsgate Gary Ross’ future with “The Hunger Games” sequel, “Catching Fire,” seemed a foregone conclusion — so much so that the helmer felt comfortable discussing his preliminary vision for the follow-up with MTV News recently. So it was a rude awakening for fans when The Hollywood Reporter reported on Wednesday that Ross was embroiled in “tough negotiations” with Lionsgate regarding his contract, and that the studio might opt to go the way of “Twilight” and “Harry Potter” and have a different director oversee follow-ups. It’s evident from interviews that Ross has a strong passion and deep insight into Suzanne Collins’ source material, so it would be a shame to see him go — a sentiment many fans share, according to a poll on MTV’s Hollywood Crush. But, if the franchise does lose Ross, which directors would be well-suited for “Catching Fire”? We have a few ideas: Steven Soderbergh The “Contagion” director is already acquainted with the world of Panem, having served as a second-unit director, creating the vision for the emotionally wrought District 11 rebellion. Soderbergh is adept at action sequences (see: “Haywire”) and boasts a flair for the stylized (see: “Ocean’s Eleven”) — important qualities for both the arena and the Capitol. Debra Granik Granik has ample experience guiding Jennifer Lawrence in a gritty tale of survival: She helmed the harrowing “Winter’s Bone,” which garnered Lawrence her first Oscar nomination. Why not extend this fruitful relationship? And though the film doesn’t require a woman director to convey Katniss’ viewpoint, it might be nice. David Yates Yates took over the “Harry Potter” franchise with “Order of the Phoenix,” going on to deliver a satisfying finale with “Deathly Hallows, Part 2.” He’s clearly comfortable picking up where previous directors left off, and has a mastery of epic, franchise filmmaking. Kathryn Bigelow To be fair, Bigelow’s work directing the war-torn drama “The Hurt Locker” makes her more qualified for the conflict-heavy “Mockingjay,” but why not get an early start setting up the events of the final installment? Plus, the woman’s got an Oscar, for Effie’s sake! Christopher Nolan If we’re gonna dream, why not dream big? Nolan’s earned a reputation for awe-inspiring aesthetics (see: “Inception,” anything he’s done involving a crime-fighting bat), so we can’t even begin to imagine what the Capitol and the jungle-themed arena would look like in his visionary hands. Would you be disappointed to see Gary Ross go? Who do you think would be capable of taking over the franchise? One Direction Announce Headlining U.S. Tour

Chart-topping British boy band will kick off tour on May 24 in Fairfax, Virginia. By Jocelyn Vena One Direction Photo: Redferns With their record-breaking debut album, Up All Night, topping the charts , One Direction plan to hit the road for their first-ever headlining tour in the States. The U.K. boy band will kick off the trek May 24 in Fairfax, Virginia, as part of a North American tour set to wrap up on July 1 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, with stops along the way in cities like Chicago, New York, Atlanta and Las Vegas. News of the guys’ tour comes as Up All Night made One Direction the first British group to have a debut album at #1 on the Billboard 200 on Wednesday (March 21). U.S. hysteria for the guys has been over-the-top, with hard-core fans wildly greeting them at stops all over the country. But one of the 1D fellas, Niall Horan, explained to MTV News that the band’s truly appreciative of all the fan love . “No way were we expecting it to do anything like that,” he said of enthusiasm for the album in the States. “We haven’t spent that much time out here and obviously not a lot of people know us, but the power of our fans, they never seem to stop amazing us. They’re absolutely brilliant and they’ve bought the album in great numbers.” Want the scoop on One Direction’s dapper boy-band style? Head over to MTV Style! This won’t be the guys’ first tour in America, though. Earlier this year One Direction toured with Big Time Rush, and things got pretty crazy, according to Horan. “Since we’ve been here, we did Radio City [Music Hall in New York] with Big Time Rush, and when we were leaving the venue, there was a lot of people waiting outside for us and it was like the movies,” he recalled. “We were trying to drive away. [Fans] were running through traffic. It was literally like something you’d see in a movie.” It doesn’t seem the hysteria is going to die down anytime soon. Before 1D even hit the road in May, they’ll perform at the Kids’ Choice Awards on March 31, and then they’ll take the “Saturday Night Live” stage a week later, on April 7. And all this buzz around the five Brits has fans wondering if they might be getting their own show on Nickelodeon . But Horan said that’s not the case, for now at least. “We’ve just been doing stuff with Nickelodeon. They’ve been brilliant to us; they’ve been really good to us. [But] there’s no sign of a TV show,” he said. “We haven’t heard anything. We’re obviously doing the Kids’ Choice and stuff, but there’s no deal been done or anything [for a show]. They’re just kind of helping us out, I suppose.” One Direction tour dates so far, according to band’s record label:
