‘Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark’ Hit With Federal Safety Violations

U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration slaps musical with three citations. By Shawn Adler “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark” Photo: Don Emmert/ AFP He’s been hunted by the Green Goblin, The Lizard, and Venom, but the webbed avenger just got challenged by what might be his most powerful foe yet: The U.S. government. Already plagued by problems ranging from delays , to rewrites to actor injuries , the Julie Taymor directed musical “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark” and its production company, 8 Legged Productions LLC, have been issued three citations for violations of workplace safety standards by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), according to a report in The New York Times . The beleaguered musical, which has reportedly cost upwards of $65 million to finance, faces a proposed fine of $12,600. The citations were issued in response to injuries to four separate actors, sustained during performances beginning in September 2010. Most notable among these injuries was a November 28 incident in which cast member Natalie Mendozaand suffered a concussion and a December 20 incident in which Christopher Tierney, the actor portraying Spider-Man himself, fell into the orchestra pit and suffered a fractured skull and our broken ribs among other injuries. “‘Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark'” remains in compliance with all government agencies and continues to adhere to all safety protocols,” Rick Miramontez, a spokesman for the production said in a statement. The citations, which come on the heels of two violations issued by The New York State Department of Labor, are the latest in a long line of troubles for the musical, the sum total of which prompted Taymor to recently describe the production as a “trial by fire.” “I am in the crucible right now. It is my trial by fire. It’s my company’s trial by fire. We have survived because our theme song is ‘Rise Above,'” Taymor said during the TED2011 conference in Long Beach, California. “Anyone who creates knows when it’s not quite there. Where it hasn’t quite become the phoenix or the burnt char. And I am right there.” The production company has 15 business days to contest the violations. Barring any more problems, “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark,” with music by Bono and The Edge, is set to premier March 15.

‘Spider-Man’ Musical Going Through ‘Trial By Fire,’ Julie Taymor Says

‘I am in the crucible right now,’ Tony-winning director told TED2011 conference. By Terri Schwartz “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark” Photo: Don Emmert/ AFP To say “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark” has had its share of problems is to say “Avatar” was fairly successful or “The Twilight Saga” is moderately popular. It seems that anything that could possibly have gone wrong with the show has. There have been delays , injuries , bad reviews , script issues and actors leaving , and all before the show has officially opened. Fortunately, the preview shows are selling out across the board, but the musical is struggling and director Julie Taymor knows it. The Tony-winning director hasn’t made a public statement about the problems in production since aerialist and stunt double Christopher Tierney was severely injured back in December. But during the TED2011 conference in Long Beach, California, on Wednesday, Taymor discussed the current state of the musical with an audience of more than 1,000 people. “I am in the crucible right now. It is my trial by fire. It’s my company’s trial by fire. We have survived because our theme song is ‘Rise Above,’ ” Taymor said, according to The New York Times . “Anyone who creates knows — when it’s not quite there. Where it hasn’t quite become the phoenix or the burnt char. And I am right there,” she added. At the moment, the show runners are deciding whether to continue with the planned March 15 opening or delay the musical for a sixth time. Lead actress T.V. Carpio talked to MTV News about the constant changes going on behind the scenes of the show and how she refuses to give in to the negative thoughts pressing on “Turn Off the Dark” from the outside. Both she and Taymor seem to feel that the musical is on the precipice of greatness, and they have the faith to continue on until it reaches that goal. “It’s right there in the palm of my hands,” Taymor said. “In all of my company’s hands. I have beautiful collaborators. We as collaborators only get there all together. I know you understand that. You stay there going forward and you see this extraordinary thing right in front of your eyes.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com .

Britney Spears’ ‘Hold It Against Me’ Video: A Pop-Culture Cheat Sheet

From Greek mythology to mid-’90s Tool albums, Brit’s latest is full of blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moments. By James Montgomery Britney Spears fights herself in “Hold It Against Me” Photo: Jive On Thursday night, after weeks of teasing, Britney Spears finally revealed her video for “Hold It Against Me,” a whirling, swirling dance explosion that features plenty of sass, swagger and exactly one flowing white gown. It also features plenty of nods to pop music’s past — not to mention several blink-and-you’d-miss-it odes to film, TV and, of course, Greek mythology. As is the case with all massive videos, there’s a whole lot to keep track of, so, much like we did for equally big clips like Lady Gaga’s “Telephone” and My Chemical Romance’s “Na Na Na,” we’ve put “Hold It Against Me” through the wringer and compiled a pop-culture cheat sheet that’s alphabetized and cross-referenced for your convenience. Believe us, this took way longer than you could imagine, but it was worth it. (Oh, and despite our best efforts, we’re sure there’s something we missed, which is why we need your help: Let us know what you spot in the comments below.) Photos of the references in Britney’s “Hold It Against Me.” The Graeae : In Greek mythology, they were the three sisters who shared a single eye. In Britney’s video, they’re hoodie-wearing dudes with serious dance moves (and no eyes at all). Same thing, really. Iamamiwhoami : Icky, sticky viral-video enigma whose early clips featured plenty of lying around in the fetal position (and amniotic fluids). In “HIAM,” Britney, covered in similarly sticky liquid, curls up on the floor, striking a pose that would make Iamami proud. Kanye West, “Runaway” : Over-the-top 35-minute mini-movie/allegory starring West as a man who cares for a phoenix who has fallen to Earth. The meteor that crashes to Earth at the beginning of “HIAM” reminds us a lot of the phoenix’s fiery entrance in ‘Ye’s film . And, if you look hard enough, you can also see the song’s lyrics printed out in the top left corner of the shot. Madonna, “Bedtime Stories” : Ultra-artistic 1995 video, directed by Mark Romanek, that cost a reported $5 million to make. From the futuristic set and the special effects to Brit’s long, flowing gown and whirling dancers, it appears to be a direct influence on pretty much everything in “HIAM.” Though we’re willing to bet Brit didn’t spend nearly as much to make her version. Madonna, “Die Another Day” : Big-budget 2002 Madonna video from the equally big-budget James Bond film of the same name. It featured a memorable fight scene that pitted Madge against her alter ego (Mariah Carey did the same thing in her “Heartbreaker” video, BTW). In “HIAM,” Britney battles her alter ego in a (very fashionable) kung fu fight. The Matrix” : Wachowski brothers franchise that featured plenty of TV screens and a whole lot of marauding machinery, just like “HIAM.” Like Keanu said, “Whoa.” “Mortal Kombat” : Totally awesome (and violent) fighting game that featured, among its cast of characters, a blue-garbed assassin named Sub-Zero. In “HIAM,” Britney’s dancers don outfits similar to him, only they don’t shoot ice out of their hands. Unless that part’s in the director’s cut. Robyn, “Indestructible” : Sexy 2010 video from Sweden’s sexiest pop export, it featured Robyn writhing on a table while wearing a dress made entirely of clear plastic tubes (courtesy of Australian artist Lucy McRae), sort of like the ones Britney uses to spray colored liquid all over the “HIAM” set. “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” : Cult 1975 film adapted from a British play, its iconic poster featured a pair of bright-red lips, which seem to have also made their way into “HIAM.” Tool,

Elycia Turnbow Claims Frankie Muniz Punched Her, Put a Gun to His Head

Frankie Muniz punched his girlfriend during a domestic argument Friday night, then put a gun to his own head, according to the alleged victim, Elycia Turnbow. A police report filed in Phoenix, Ariz., last Friday, says the Malcolm in the Middle star was arguing with Turnbow in their home about their “prior relationships.” That’s when Frankie “grabbed a gun and held it to his head, possibly with the intent of committing suicide,” Elycia says, although Frankie disputes the claim. Elycia called one of Frankie’s friends to take him to the hospital. Frankie tells a different story, claiming Elycia was screaming and yelling when he “fell and hit his head.” Muniz says that’s why he went to the hospital.

Bret Michaels’ Heart Surgery Successful

Poison frontman is recuperating in ICU after surgery to fix hole in his heart. By Gil Kaufman Bret Michaels Photo: Michael N. Todaro/ Getty Images Poison singer and reality-TV star Bret Michaels had successful surgery on Monday to repair a hole in his heart. It was some good medical news after several years of health scares for the 47-year-old “Celebrity Apprentice” winner . According to The Associated Press, the surgery took place at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix, and a hospital spokeswoman said Michaels is recuperating and remains in the facility’s intensive care unit for observation. Doctors discovered a hole in Michaels’ heart in April after he was treated for a brain hemorrhage . During Monday’s procedure, doctors inserted a catheter into a vein in Michaels’ groin with a surgical device and then used tiny cameras to close the hole in his heart. The closure device will remain inside the rocker’s heart permanently to stop abnormal blood flow between two chambers of his heart, which doctors think could have caused the stroke he suffered last year. The impending surgery didn’t slow Michaels down over the weekend, when he attended a classic car show in Phoenix and auctioned off his 1969 Camaro — which had a cameo in his recent VH1 series, “Bret Michaels: Life as I Know It” — for more than $200,000, before checking into the hospital on Saturday night to prepare for the procedure. “Barring any complications, I should be out within three or four days,” he told the Arizona Republic newspaper on Friday. “Then, I will be down (resting) for three weeks. I don’t know if I can sit around for that long, but I’ll try my best.” Michaels, who also had an emergency appendectomy in April, recently proposed to his girlfriend of 16 years, Kristi Gibson, who is also the mother of his two children.
