Martin Solveig At Movie Awards: What Did He Play?

We break down highlights from French DJ’s movie-themed set. By Ryan J. Downey Martin Solveig arrives at the 2012 MTV Movie Awards Photo: Christopher Polk/ Getty Images “The Hunger Games” was one of the big winners Sunday night (June 3) at the 2012 MTV Movie Awards , where the juggernaut collected several Golden Popcorns against a musical backdrop culled from some of the most iconic film scores of all time. That nostalgia-inducing soundscape came courtesy of DJ Martin Solveig, who remixed themes from classic movies ranging from “Star Wars” to “Pulp Fiction.” The Black Keys, Fun. and Wiz Khalifa all brought the house down as musical guests at the MTV Movie Awards, held at the Gibson Ampitheatre in Universal City, California. The French electronic-music DJ and producer entertained the audience throughout the show, which was broadcast to viewers live as the show went in and out of commercial breaks. Solveig carefully curated a delicious mixture of some of the most memorable melodies from the movies that have shaped generations of popular culture with their stories, performances, tone and dialog. His set was also as much about the present as the past, perfectly summarized by the mix of the Doors and screamo singer-turned-Grammy-winning dubstep standard-bearer Skrillex. Miss a few tunes? We’ve got you covered. Solveig’s selections on Sunday included “Hello” (Martin Solveig featuring Dragonette), Calvin Harris’ “Feel So Close,” Skrillex and the Doors “Breakin’ a Sweat,” Kavinsky + Lovefoxx’s “Nightcall” (from the movie “Drive”), “Ready 2 Go (Hardwell Remix),” “Misirlou”(made famous all over again in “Pulp Fiction”), Martin Solveig & Dragonette feat. Idoling!!!’s “Big in Japan (Ziggy Stardust Remix),” various mixes of “The Night Out” and some of Daft Punk’s work from “Tron: Legacy.” And these were the tracks spinning off from the most legendary themes: “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly Theme (Martin Solveig Remix)” : Clint Eastwood’s “Man With No Name” spaghetti Western trilogy (which concluded with 1966’s “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly”) is the stuff of legend, most recently memorialized in Johnny Depp’s animated “Rango.” For many years, Metallica has opened each and every concert with composer Ennio Morricone’s “Ecstasy of Gold” from “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly,” with the crowd often singing the lyric-less melody in unison as a series of “whoa-oahs.” If the 83-year-old Italian composer was watching the Movie Awards, he heard his composition mixed up for the modern electro age. “Jaws Theme (Martin Solveig Remix)” : Who hasn’t tried to play the “Jaws” theme on a piano at some point? It’s so simple yet so brilliant, like “Chopsticks” for people who want to remember how terrified they were to go into the water. The music from future “Star Wars” composer John Williams certainly helped Steven Spielberg kick off the modern blockbuster featuring the scariest fish since Moby Dick (OK, technically, neither were fish); they re-teamed on several other films. “Imperial March (Martin Solveig Remix)” : “The Imperial March” has been synonymous with ominous evil, impending doom, villainous tyranny and light sabers that only come in the color red since the original “Star Wars” movie kicked off an enduring worldwide phenomenon in 1977. It’s impossible to hear this theme without picturing Darth Vader boarding the starship transporting Princess Leia, holding that guy up in the air by the throat and demanding to know various things. So cool! “Superman Theme (Martin Solveig Remix)” : Hey, what do you know! Another John Williams score. And another grandiose theme that’s synonymous with the film. The music instantly conjures the image of the late, great Christopher Reeve soaring through the skies of Metropolis as Superman. Whether battling Kryptonian super villains, trading barbs with Lex Luthor or romancing Lois Lane (let’s not mention that Richard Pryor entry), Supes was defined by this killer theme. Johnny Depp Honored With MTV Generation Award At Movie Awards

Before accepting the award, Depp joined the Black Keys onstage to perform ‘Gold on the Ceiling.’ By Terri Schwartz Johnny Depp Photo: Getty Images UNIVERSAL CITY, California — Talk about a grand entrance. Aerosmith rock gods Steven Tyler and Joe Perry walked onto the MTV Movie Awards stage to congratulate a “truly revolutionary artist,” an actor who has become a rock star in his own right. Johnny Depp was the recipient of the MTV Generation Award , joining the prestigious ranks of Tom Cruise, Clint Eastwood and Godzilla. Depp joined the Black Keys on stage to perform a rousing rendition of “Gold on the Ceiling” before going on to accept his award. “I’ve got to thank MTV for this. This is quite an amazing honor, truly. It’s like the Get-Out-Of-The-Business Award, ‘All right, you’ve done too much.’ Clearly, based on the clips, there’s nothing wrong with me,” Depp said when he received his Golden Popcorn. “I just thank you very much. And it’s an honor to be presented by these two legends, Steve and Joe, and these up and coming legends, [The Black Keys], so thank you very much.” This has been a big year for Depp. “21 Jump Street” was nominated for six MTV Movie Awards, including one for Depp himself. In addition, he reunited on the big screen with Tim Burton to create their passion project, “Dark Shadows.” But the Generation Award is less about Depp’s last year and more about his legacy. From when we first saw him die brutally in “A Nightmare on Elm Street” to when he won us over as Captain Jack Sparrow in “Pirates of the Caribbean,” we’ve known he was a star worthy of our attention. Next year will be big for the three-time Golden Popcorn winner as well. We’re excited to see him transform onscreen yet again, but this time as sidekick Tonto in Gore Verbinski’s take on “The Lone Ranger.” And there’s always the planned fifth “Pirates of the Caribbean” movie and inevitable reunion with Burton to look forward to in the future. Harry Potter Is Best Hero At MTV Movie Awards

Boy wizard was in a heated battle with ‘Hunger Games’ heroine Katniss Everdeen in MTV’s first social-voting category. By Terri Schwartz Daniel Radcliffe in “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2” Photo: Warner Bros. He was a real human being and a real hero. Harry Potter came, he saw and he conquered tonight at the 2012 MTV Movie Awards . The Boy Who Lived now enters the prestigious Best Hero ranks that, at this point, only include Christian Bale’s Batman from “Batman Begins.” Harry Potter came out on top after a heated battle against Katniss Everdeen that totally eclipsed the category’s other three contenders: Thor, Captain America and “21 Jump Street” cop Jenko. At least “Harry Potter” toppled two Avengers at the Movie Awards, since the Marvel superhero collective just beat out “Potter” to be the third-highest-grossing movie of all time worldwide. We get the distinct pleasure of knowing that fans think Harry Potter is a better hero than an all-American supersoldier and a Norse god. Though Best Hero was a Movie Awards category back in 2006 when Bale won, this is the first year it was chosen by fans on Twitter. The first-ever social voting category had Twitter users support their favorite hero by sending tweets instead of casting their votes on the . That’s two Golden Popcorns won, four lost and one to go for “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2,” which was nominated a grand total of seven times at this year’s MTV Movie Awards. “Potter” is up against “The Hunger Games,” “Bridesmaids,” “The Help” and “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1” for Movie of the Year, and it’s anyone’s guess as to which film will take that one home. We know that seven is a meaningful number in the “Harry Potter” universe, with seven Horcruxes, seven years at Hogwarts and seven books. Heck, Harry Potter was even born in July! That bodes well for the movie’s Movie Awards chances this year. This is the fourth Golden Popcorn the “Harry Potter” series has ever won. Tom Felton has had the honor of winning Best Villain the past two years, and both were fairly memorable experiences. First Mark Wahlberg interrupted his acceptance speech , and then Dave Grohl busted in on his post-win interview . Emma Watson accepted the award for Best Cast only minutes before the series’ titular character won Best Hero. The 2012 MTV Movie Awards are officially under way! Charlize Theron Commends Kristen Stewart For Being ‘Authentic’

‘When she says ‘I don’t give a f—,’ she means that,’ the ‘Snow White and the Huntsman’ actress tells MTV News. By Fallon Prinzivalli, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Charlize Theron Photo: MTV News For two people who seem so different, Kristen Stewart and Charlize Theron have great offscreen chemistry. In our “MTV First: Snow White and the Huntsman,” they made each other laugh with their comments and played off each other’s answers — like when Stewart described Theron in three words, saying, “I want you,” and Theron replied, “You got it,” and spread her legs apart. When MTV News’ Josh Horowitz caught up with the “Young Adult” actress, she chalked up their friendship to the age-old “opposites attract” phenomenon, saying that what specifically attracts her to Stewart is her genuine personality. “The first thing I noticed about her was when she says ‘I don’t give a f—,’ she means that,” Theron said. “She’s not just trying to be cool. She’s not trying to be edgy. She’s very, very authentic, and that’s what I like about her.” The two actresses star in an original adaptation of the classic fairy tale “Snow White,” which follows the princess as she fights alongside the Huntsman to reclaim her kingdom from the evil Queen Ravenna. The film hits theaters June 1, and Theron got to know Stewart as they worked on the project together. “I think that there’s an incredible girl there,” Theron said. “And I like that she’s so different because I think that it’s authentic — and there’s nothing I despise more than people trying to be something that they’re not. And all these, kind of, quirks that she has, they’re authentic to who she is and she’s not putting it on, she’s not trying to do it. She’s just really who she is.” While the “Twilight” actress has received bad press in the past when people mistook her timid nature for rudeness or conceit, her co-star had nothing but praise for her character. “You know, a lot of people at that age can still be [finding themselves]. And of course she’s still going to be finding herself in certain [ways], but I’m pretty impressed with where she is already at her very young age,” Theron said. “And I have so much respect for someone who can just authentically be themselves.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Snow White and the Huntsman.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . MTV Movie Awards 2012: Seven Things You Didn’t See

From Russell Brand’s improv to Kristen Stewart’s nerves, best behind-the-scenes moments from Sunday’s show. By Eric Ditzian Kristen Stewart wins at the 2012 MTV Movie Awards Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images UNIVERSAL CITY, California — Christian Bale nearly cried. Johnny Depp wailed alongside the Black Keys. Jennifer Lawrence got shot through the head with an arrow. Everyone saw these moments take place at the 2012 MTV Movie Awards on Sunday night at the Gibson Amphitheatre. But back behind the stage, in the wings and on the patio behind the theater, there was an entirely different event going on. And I was lucky enough to have access to it all, thanks to my so-called “God pass,” the highest-level badge allowing me to come, go and gawk as I pleased. I was there when “Magic Mike” star Joe Manganiello, shirtless and clad in a fireman’s outfit, deposited Elizabeth Banks backstage after carrying her off after her Best On-Screen Transformation lap-dance of an acceptance speech. She was four-alarm-fire excited for the help and announced, “I needed Channing Tatum shirtless for my bit to work. But then this guy saved the day!” It was just that kind of party. Check out six other things you didn’t see at the Movie Awards. Emma Watson Was Bummed The 22-year-old actress may have moved on from the “Harry Potter” franchise that made her a star (and a zillionaire), but the gal never forgets her roots. After handing over the Golden Popcorn for Best Male Performance to “Hunger Games” star Josh Hutcherson — who beat out “Potter” boy wizard Daniel Radcliffe for the win — Watson nearly crumbled into a handler’s arms backstage. Was she feeling like she’d betrayed the hero of Hogwarts? Was it just kind of awkward? Before I could inquire, her “Perks of Being a Wallflower” co-stars swooped in, bringing a smile to her face, and off they all went to the back patio. Kristen Stewart Was Worried KStew didn’t have any interest in winning Best Kiss for a fourth time in a row, especially considering that co-star Robert Pattinson was off promoting a new film rather than kicking it at the Gibson. But win she did, and once onstage, with no lips to smooch in the grand tradition of Best Kiss winners, Stewart implored co-stars like Charlize Theron and Taylor Lautner to join her and do the deed. Shockingly, no one took her up on the offer. She ended up just pretending to make out with herself. The crowd loved it, but Kristen wasn’t sure. Once backstage, Stewart leaned toward a rep and, with a nervous smile, asked, “How was it? Was it OK?” Russell Brand Likes Little Kids The night’s emcee had a long-standing plan with “Rock of Ages” stars Julianne Hough and Diego Boneta to interrupt a commercial break and promote their upcoming rock musical. But Hough — whose boyfriend, Ryan Seacrest, couldn’t make it to the show — instead brought her elementary-school-aged nephew, leading Brand to come up with a wacky bit of improv. To the folks watching at home, it seemed like it was preplanned for Brand to be kneeling down and asking the little boy to take over his hosting duties, but it all came together in a matter of minutes, thanks to Brand. Wiz Khalifa Feels No Pain Wiz barely made it to the show. Just hours before he was set to perform, the rapper was stuck in Dallas . Show producers were trying their best not to freak out. Not Wiz. He hopped aboard “my own little cloud that I float” on, as he told me on the red carpet, and made it to the show. After the performance, the guy was on a serious high, perhaps partly owing to the pungent cloud surrounding his entourage, but mostly because he rocked the hell out of the crowd. He hopped into the backstage area, a huge smile on his face, and shouted to anyone who wanted to hear, “It felt great! It felt great!” Johnny Depp Wants a Band Backstage, while Depp was shredding with the Black Keys, “Prometheus” stars Charlize Theron and Michael Fassbender were boogying their butts off. The cast of “Teen Wolf” was saying that they had to be backstage, and in full view of the musical madness, rather than in their seats. And Depp, he was probably wishing he could do this full-time. As he said after the performance, when multiple people suggested he ditch acting and fully embrace music, he said, “I need a band! I don’t have a band!” Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler didn’t seem to care, telling Depp and the Keys, “You the bomb!” Dark Knight Gets Emotional In perhaps the night’s most unexpected moment, Christian Bale appeared to be on the verge of tears after a montage of “Batman” footage, including shots of Heath Ledger, played during the show. Afterwards, Bale, director Christopher Nolan and co-stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Gary Oldman all embraced one another again and again. This was a special moment, clearly, for them all. Nolan (whose teleprompter, alone among presenters on Sunday, read simply, “Ad lib”) was the focus of all the “Dark Knight Rises” well-wishing. “Thank you,” Bale told him. “Thank you,” Gordon-Levitt echoed. “Thank you.” Jaw-dropping, heart-pounding, gut-busting moments galore. ‘Hunger Games’ Stars Give Updates On ‘Catching Fire’

Josh Hutcherson tells MTV News that director Francis Lawrence ‘has his finger on the pulse of the story.’ By Kevin P. Sullivan, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Josh Hutcherson arrives at the 2012 MTV Movie Awards Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images UNIVERSAL CITY, California — Coming off their big night at the 2012 MTV Movie Awards , the cast of ” The Hunger Games ,” which took home four buckets of Golden Popcorn, is already planning the next installment of the series, ” The Hunger Games: Catching Fire .” MTV News’ Josh Horowitz caught up with stars Josh Hutcherson and Elizabeth Banks during the awards ceremony to find out where preparations for “Catching Fire” currently stand. Last week came word that the crew may leave behind its North Carolina location from the first film for a shoot further south in Atlanta. Hutcherson told MTV News that he hasn’t heard a definitive word on the location, but he is looking forward to the shoot. “I haven’t heard anything confirmed yet, but Atlanta is a big possibility. I know they’re looking at Hawaii, too, for some of the tropic stuff when we’re in the Games itself,” he said. “I’m excited. It’s going to be somewhere nice. I’m looking forward to it.” A possible change in filming location would be a minor shift compared to the director swap that captured headlines months ago. Hutcherson said that he recently saw the new director, Francis Lawrence , and is excited about his vision for the next adaptation. “I just had lunch with him a couple days ago, and he’s fantastic. He’s so smart and really has his finger on the pulse of the story, and I love the way he’s going to structure the script,” Hutcherson said. “The first thing he said to me was, ‘I want to make the movie out of the book. I want the book to be the best movie possible.’ That was immediately what he led with, which meant a lot to me because the books mean a lot to me.” Sunday night’s winner for Best On-Screen Transformation , Elizabeth Banks, on the other hand, has not spoken with Lawrence, though she understands why. “They’re so early in the process. That seems silly to say because we’re going to make the movie in a few months,” she said. “But I think he’s just started, and we have just gotten scripts, and it’s just sort of all happening.” As for whether she can share any details from the script she just read, Banks kept her secrets to herself. “I can’t tell you anything,” she said. “I read a book called ‘Catching Fire’ that I’m pretty sure the movie will be based on.” Jaw-dropping, heart-pounding, gut-busting moments galore.
