They are up against some stiff competition in the form of Nicki Minaj, Bon Iver, J. Cole and Skrillex. With artists from such a wide range of musical styles making the final cut, the category sets up one of the year’s most-interesting contests. The group’s leading lady spoke to MTV News on Wednesday night backstage at the Grammy Nominations Concert in Los Angeles, where artists including Lady Gaga took the stage . “Our parents were here with us tonight, so we all hugged, and I cried a little bit, and the second thing that popped into my mind was, ‘What a diverse category!’ ” Kimberly Perry shared. “There’s so many genres represented just in the new artist batch, and we’re just really, really honored to represent country in that.” The band, composed of three siblings, has been getting attention in the mainstream thanks to the success of their self-titled album, released in October 2010, and its breakthrough hit “If I Die Young,” a ballad about the perils of, well, dying young. The court battle between Usher and his ex-wife Tameka Foster is heating up. The drama started when Usher wanted to take their sons with him on tour and Tameka said no. He then tried to get sole custody. She followed up with a motion last week for him to be tested for drugs so she could get sole custody. According to Tameka, when he was sick onstage in Germany and had to stop the show, he was “in delirium” and not sick as he claimed. She also alleges that back in 2008 she found “mysterious pills” in his jeans pockets and she believes he gets high. Tameka said: “I believe he gets high. And if he doesn’t then he’d take the drug test, correct?” Usher filed a response to Foster’s allegations last week, calling Foster’s drug test request “frivolous and unfounded,” and intended to “harass and embarrass” the singer. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Matt Elias Bruno Mars backstage at the Grammy Nominations Concert Photo: MTV News Bruno Mars is up for six Grammy Awards, including such marquee noms as Album of the Year for Doo-Wops & Hooligans as well as Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance for his ballad “Grenade.” Shortly after the singer learned he and his team, the Smeezingtons, were recognized for their breakthrough album and track, Mars chatted with MTV News backstage after the Grammy Nominations Concert in Los Angeles, and he seemed pretty overwhelmed by all of it. “Incredible. We worked really hard,” he said. “We worked hard in the studio right down the street, actually. And it’s a little tiny shack, but for the two years we were in there, we just locked ourselves in that room and came up with Doo-Wops & Hooligans .” All the hard work on the album, which also features hits “The Lazy Song” and “Just the Way You Are,” seems to have paid off with recognition not only for the release, but also for its crowning jewel of a track. “Worked extremely hard on ‘Grenade.’ That was the hardest song on the whole album to finish because we knew we had something, and to get all that emotion out,” he said. “I think I can speak for all of us when I say that we’re really happy that that song is being recognized because that’s like our trophy song.” While Mars seemed pretty poised backstage, he admitted it was a little hard for him to keep his cool while they were announcing the nominees during the telecast, which included two performances by Lady Gaga . “They kept cutting the camera to me every time. I wanted to jump up and punch [Smeezingtons partner Philip Lawrence] in the face and knee him, noogies, but I’m trying to be cool ’cause I know mom’s watching,” Mars joked. NBA star cites ‘fraud’ as the basis for their split. By Christina Garibaldi Kris Humphries and Kim Kardashian Photo: Jerritt Clark/WireImage Nearly a month after Kim Kardashian filed for divorce from Kris Humphries, the NBA star is firing back, seeking an annulment to erase his brief 72-day marriage to the reality star on the grounds of fraud. Under California law, an annulment will be granted only if the court finds that there was no validity to the marriage. In his Superior Court filing, Humphries checked the boxes marked “nullity of voidable marriage,” citing “fraud” as the basis for their split. If Humphries is denied an annulment, he is seeking legal separation, which means the former couple could avoid all divorce proceedings. Back in October, Humphries released a statement, saying he was committed to working on repairing his short-lived marriage. “I love my wife and am devastated to learn she filed for divorce,” he told People magazine at the time. “I’m committed to this marriage and everything this covenant represents and I’m willing to do whatever it takes to make it work.” On October 31, Kardashian filed for divorce, citing “irreconcilable differences.” “After careful consideration, I have decided to end my marriage. I hope everyone understands this was not an easy decision,” Kardashian said in a statement . “I had hoped this marriage was forever but sometimes things don’t work out as planned. We remain friends and wish each other the best.” Court papers released online state that Kardashian requested the court uphold the prenuptial agreement the two signed before the wedding, which guarantees that the reality star will keep all money earned during their marriage. Kardashian and Humphries married on August 20 in a lavish $10 million affair that was captured by E! cameras and aired in a two-day television special. Their relationship is currently being played out on this season of “Kourtney and Kim Take New York.” The news comes on the same day as Kim’s sister, Kourtney Kardashian, revealed that she is pregnant with her second child with boyfriend Scott Disick.
