Wiz Khalifa Recruits Snoop Dogg, Curren$y For Debut Album

Waken Baken MC tells MTV News he expects spring 2011 release. By Steven Roberts, with reporting by Sway Calloway Wiz Khalifa Photo: MTV News Wiz Khalifa’s debut LP is easily one of the most-anticipated albums of 2011. The Pittsburgh MC has built an impressive following, allowing him to sell out shows nationwide on his Waken Baken Tour and crash the Internet whether he’s dropping a mixtape or getting arrested . Wiz told MTV News his album is crazy, and promised fans he hasn’t forgotten what made him successful. “I’ve been working on it every day since I’ve signed with Atlantic,” Wiz said. “The main feel of the album is still homegrown. I’m keeping it organic. “I’ve got to stick to what I know, what I’ve been doing. My main producers have been doing the bulk of the album, and it’s majority done. We’re just doing the big songs now, putting some of the features together, but really it’s more personal. You get to see me and feel me more as a person, but it’s still that same edgy, that same rawness that people dig.” Wiz said Curren$y and Snoop Dogg are slated to appear on his still-untitled LP, which he expects to be released in spring 2011. He said that when he played the record for people in L.A., he received a positive reception. “Every song, they were like, ‘Man, This is going to the radio. You could go to the radio with that,’ ” Wiz recalled. “So they are good songs, but they are also songs that are going to be accepted widely.” Wiz said two songs he’s excited about are “Rooftop” and “The Race.” He said “Rooftop,” which was recorded in L.A., looks back at where he came from and where he is now. “The Race” was recorded back home in Pittsburgh and has his trademark cool vibe. “The song ‘The Race’ is just a ‘swag’ song, like an attitude, ‘doing what we do’-type thing,” he said. Wiz Khalifa Declines Drake’s Offer To Join Tour

The Pittsburgh MC tells XXL he’s flattered but has to ‘keep focusing’ on his own work. By Mawuse Ziegbe Wiz Khalifa Photo: Rostrum Records It looks like fans will have to wait to catch Drake and Wiz Khalifa on the same bill. In a much-watched Ustream convo with fans on Thursday, Drizzy extended an invitation to Khalifa to join his upcoming Light Dreams and Nightmares Tour . However, the Pittsburgh MC said he won’t be added to the Nightmares lineup, which also features Clipse and Bun B, and has decided to focus on his own Waken Baken string of dates. “No disrespect to [Drake] or anybody else who might wanna see me do some more collaborative things, but to keep building and keep my brand as strong as what it is, I gotta keep focusing on what it is,” Khalifa told XXLmag.com on Friday (August 20). “This is my first tour that I got coming up, the Waken Baken Tour. I gotta at least kick that off and make that what it is so we can do 10 more.” The Kush & OJ MC clarified that although he’ll be working the performance circuit solo, it’s all love when it comes to Drake. Khalifa confided that Drizzy’s offer proves he’s on the right track. “Just the fact of cuz even extending his hand and me being on his radar is tight to me. It just lets me know that I’m doing what I need to be doing as far as staying relevant and staying poppin’,” Khalifa said. “But I think to keep me poppin’ and keep me relevant I gotta stay building on top of what I’m doing and what I been doing.” Khalifa also added that he needs to stay on his grind until he can stack paper like Drizzy. “I was looking on the Internet and [saw] that [Drake] made $10 million this year,” Khalifa said. “So maybe when I make $10 million, then we can tour.” The MC added that while he won’t be an official Nightmares act, he may make a special appearance in certain cities. “We can do like some special dates or some surprise guest-type thing, but I need 10 mil too, Drake,” Khalifa said, ribbing the Toronto lyricist. Wiz Khalifa Is A Top-Five Finalist For ‘Hottest Breakthrough MC Of 2010’!

Winner will be revealed on MTV2’s ‘Sucker Free Summit’ Sunday at noon. By Shaheem Reid Wiz Khalifa Photo: Atlantic It is here: As promised, the top-five vote-getters in our poll for “Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2010” will be revealed this week. These are the artists you guys voted for over the past month, and we can’t express enough how overwhelmed we were by your participation in this project. More than 200,000 votes came in, and they were tallied as of midnight Friday. Keep in mind, the unveiling of the names this week are the top five, but in no particular order. The winner of the “Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2010,” as voted on by the MTV News audience, will be revealed Sunday (July 25) at noon on the “Sucker Free Summit.” Chosen One: Wiz Khalifa Rising in the Ranks : When Wiz Khalifa talks gang affiliations, it’s not about red or blue. It’s the yellow and black: the colors of the Steelers, Pirates and Penguins of Pittsburgh. The past couple of years for Khalifa have brought constant elevation, not just with his daily fruits and vegetables (the green kind), but in the public’s awareness of him and his artistic acumen. Wiz spent 2007 and ’08 waiting to drop an album on Warner Bros. Records that never materialized. He kept his name in the streets and on the Internet by releasing a slew of mixtapes in the interim, developing a small cult following. Wiz’s fans were eventually dubbed the Taylor Gang , after a group of MCs he was down with in Pittsburgh. Last November, he put out an independent body of work called Deal or No Deal as a sort of declaration that he would make it in the game regardless of whether he had the backing of a major label. Deal spawned the popular “This Plane,” which has been soaring in the past few weeks with a video on MTV Jams and, of course, online. The blogs and Twitter is where Wiz has thrived unlike any MC in his peer group. The Taylors have been very active with their rabid love for Khalifa. His Kush & OJ mixtape was so heavily downloaded and talked about when it came out in April (just in time for 4/20) that it became a trending topic on Twitter and Google. Wiz’s musical appeal lies with his melodies and his lovable stoner mentality. Early Insight : “There’s certain cities where you have that hometown pride. Pittsburgh is just one of those cities where you go hard for anything that’s Pittsburgh,” Wiz explained. “Knowing that everybody’s got my back and knowing that I keep it real with everyone back home, ’cause I still live in Pittsburgh, so people still see me every day. People see me at the gas station, eating wherever everybody’s eating. I sign autographs and take pictures, but I’m still a regular person. I never thought I was going to be that dude — you know, to really put Pittsburgh on the map — but it’s cool.” Blistering Ballistics : “I live life sucka free/ That’s why them n—as you be wit talk down like they don’t f— wit me/ I get money realistically/ And the homies show me love/ Groupies wanna leave the club wit me/ Ain’t nothin’ to a G/ Let your hair blow in the breeze/ Roll some bomb-ass weed.” — from Khalifa’s “The Kid Frankie” Forecast : The tide has definitely turned in Wiz’s favor. His Internet presence is steel-cage solid, and his fanbase has been steadily growing. Now his big-homie peers, such as Rick Ross , have taken notice and are calling him for features. The biggest thing Wiz has on his side right now is freedom. He’s a free agent, making his next album at his leisure and with his own creative vision. Kush & OJ is being heralded as his best project to date, so his follow-up is pivotal. Besides the aforementioned album, Wiz has also been crafting his mixtape Cabin Fever (think more private jets than out in the woods), so the sky can literally be the limit. MTV News will be rolling out the top-five candidates for “Hottest Breakthrough MCs of 2010” all week — with the winner being revealed on MTV2’s “Sucker Free Summit” on Sunday at noon! Pirates extend contracts for Russell, GM (AP)

The Pittsburgh Pirates say they extended the contracts of manager John Russell and general manager Neal Huntington through the 2011 season without making a public announcement. The Pirates were coming off a 99-loss season in 2009 and, amid slumping ticket sales, apparently felt that announcing the extensions over the winter might further lessen enthusiasm for this season.
