He’s painted cinematic landscapes of psychosexual kink ( The Cell ), childhood fantasy ( The Fall ), and ancient Greek 3-D abs ( Immortals ), but in this week’s Mirror Mirror director Tarsem takes a turn into uncharted territory: The family-friendly fairytale. Turning his attentions to the story of Snow White , Tarsem creates another visually rich fantasyland of imagination — and gives the fabled princess a post-modern streak to boot — with the help of the late Oscar-winning costume designer and longtime collaborator Eiko Ishioka ( Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters , Bram Stoker’s Dracula , Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark ), who passed away in January at the age of 73. In an exclusive chat, Tarsem takes Movieline through his work with Ishioka and the whimsical, inventive, and utterly imaginative designs of Mirror Mirror that comprise their final collaboration on film. ON HIS LONGTIME COLLABORATION WITH EIKO ISHIOKA Tarsem says he was looking for a break from his heavily visual films when he decided to take on Mirror Mirror for the chance to work one last time with Ishioka, who succumbed to cancer only months after production wrapped. “On a personal level I did not want to do more than three visual films,” he said, “but the reason that really pushed it together was that I knew that Eiko did not have more than a year to go. She did not have more than a movie left in her. I said, okay, let’s do a visual film. Eiko’s kind of like me, unfortunately – she has only two gears, full speed or off, and I just knew that she wanted to work.” ON THE IMPORTANCE OF MAKING SNOW WHITE A HEROINE CAPABLE OF SAVING HERSELF Tarsem’s Snow White (played by Lily Collins ) springs into action as a swashbuckling bandit princess in Mirror Mirror’s post-modern take — a far cry from the original Disney animation. Tarsem sought to make a family film that simultaneously rejected the “damsel in distress” angle. “I had done three R-rated movies and thought I wanted to do a family film,” he said. “Everyone asked me again and again if I wanted to do a gritty, R-rated Snow White and I said no! The original story, as beloved as it is, is a ten-minute story. It’s just about vanity. I’d never seen the original animation until about a month ago, and I thought I would like to have a different take on it.” ON THE OTHER SNOW WHITE MOVIE, SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN Tarsem had to scrap plans to release Mirror Mirror in 3-D in order to get into theaters ahead of the competition — Rupert Sanders’ action adventure Snow White and the Huntsman , starring Kristen Stewart . “We had to come out first because we are a smaller movie than the big, grand action-adventure,” Tarsem explained. “It’s always easier to sell those on a trailer. I said, ‘We have to come first.’ They could afford to come second, but we couldn’t afford to come second.” ON HIS NEXT MOVIE — A ‘NON-VISUAL’ PROJECT “By that I don’t mean handheld, gritty, running around stuff — it’s not going to be Law & Order – but a contemporary tale. The film I’m going towards right now is a very simple drone attack from the perspective of the guys who fly the planes that are actually flying in Africa, but they do it from a little container in the desert. It’s a drone attack, so what are the politics involved in saying, ‘Go ahead and do this’ and just watching the collateral damage of when you can give a go-ahead and when you cannot, and how the same act feels completely different on the ground than for the people in the sky who come and knock them out? It’s what right now I’m gearing towards, but anything that’s interesting right now that isn’t fantasy oriented, a tale that isn’t completely designed, is what I want to do. We can’t help but look forward to the next film based on Suzanne Collins’ best-sellers. Here are our five burning questions (minor spoilers ahead for those who haven’t yet read the book — hurry up and get to it, people!): When Will Gary Ross Officially Sign On to Direct? By all accounts, this question has already been answered behind closed doors in some fancy studio room somewhere but has not been announced to the general public. As of now, Gary Ross is attached to direct “Catching Fire,” which, in “Hollywood speak,” means he’s still trying to work out the details with his agents and the studio. We’re pretty optimistic that he’ll return, though, because he’s offered up some very specific details about his plans for it. When and Where Will Filming Take Place? Come on, Lionsgate, you’ve already announced the release date for “Catching Fire.” When will you announce the production start date? Time is ticking! Those of us who’ve read the book know there are Games afoot but of a completely different nature. Ross told MTV News that he has some specific ideas about how to shoot in/on a tropical location but wouldn’t expand upon them beyond teasing the tone of the second film. “It will look and feel slightly different from the first,” he said before adding that he can guarantee one thing: “Catching Fire” will not be in 3-D. “I don’t think it’s appropriate for this film. If we shoot in 3-D, we become the Capitol,” he said. Who Will play Finnick Odair? Much like the hullabaloo that surrounded the casting of Katniss, Peeta and Gale, fans are very invested in who will play hunky-yet-surprisingly-complex victor Finnick Odair. The list of fan hopefuls is all over the place and includes Armie Hammer, Alex Pettyfer, Garrett Hedlund, Hunter Parrish and YouTube star Joey Graceffa. (This writer would very much like for relatively unknown Benjamin Stone to be in the mix . See his work on “The Nine Lives of Chloe King” for proof.) Will Kristen Bell’s Campaigning Pay Off? In addition to charming us into total adoration via the release of her slightly embarrassing sloth video , Kristen Bell has not been shy about her love of “The Hunger Games.” The admitted superfan has launched her very own campaign of sorts to be cast as kick-ass District 7 champ Johanna Mason. Only time will tell to see if she gets her shot. We think she at least deserves an audition, don’t you? Which Scene Will Be the Most Swoon-Worthy? The greater messages in “The Hunger Games” are about survival and independence and freedom. However, we can’t help it if there are also several swoon-worthy scenes that we can’t wait to see played out onscreen between Katniss and Peeta and Gale. Speaking to “Catching Fire,” what will make us melt in our seats most? That “beach scene” between Katniss and Peeta or Katniss and Gale’s emotional exchange after he’s severely beaten and recovering at her mother’s house? Toronto MC suffered minor wounds when a van she was traveling in took on gunfire after a show in downtown Omaha. By Rob Markman Honey Cocaine Photo: Taylor Hill/ FilmMagic Tyga ‘s careless world was hit with quite a bit of drama on Monday night following a concert in Omaha, Nebraska. Omaha police confirmed with MTV News that two members of Tyga’s entourage were shot and suffered minor wounds when a van that the Young Money rapper was traveling in took on gunfire after his show at the Sokol Auditorium in downtown. Tyga’s artist Honey Cocaine, real name Sochitla Sal, took to Twitter early Tuesday morning (March 20) and confirmed that she was one of the people shot. “Got shot and I’m not dead. #LoveLifeAndGod,” she wrote . The police report confirms that Honey was struck in the arm and was transported to Creighton University Medical Center. The second victim, Derrick Lowe, was grazed in his hip and refused treatment at the scene. The confrontation began while Tyga was onstage getting set to perform his hit single “Rack City,” the last song from his set. A group of concertgoers began to throw things onstage, which seemed to infuriate the rapper. Footage of the incident made its way to YouTube shortly after. In the clip, an enraged Tyga begins shouting, “Who threw it?” before urging the culprit to see him outside after the show. The police report cites a disturbance at the concert hall and states that Tyga and company were followed by a black four-door sedan as they left the scene in their van. Police observed several bullet holes in the victim’s vehicle, but no one was seriously injured. The investigation is ongoing, police say. On February 29, Honey Cocaine joined Tyga when he appeared on ” RapFix Live ” and spit a verse for the camera. The Toronto MC also sat and chopped it up with Sway about her plans for the future with Tyga. “Me, I’m building,” she said. “We’re building together, but we both do our own thing.” Related Artists Tyga

Cuba Gooding wildin’ out with white women, surprise surprise… According to a Jezebel story: What’s Cuba Gooding Jr. up to these days? Well, there’s Red Tails — and, according to three women in New Mexico, a whole lot of groping. The women say he harassed all of them at Maloney’s Tavern in Albuquerque — and they have pictures. Sara (all the women I talked to asked that their last names not be used) told me: At about midnight on March 1st, Cuba Gooding Jr. waltzed into the bar we were at and proceeded to sexually harass a number of the [women there] and assault (punch) a [man] for attempting to take a picture of Cuba receiving a lap dance. The sexual harassment occurred when women would be taking pictures with him; he would grab butt cheeks during the picture taking and when women reacted negatively to that, he would proceed to either touch women’s breasts or tell them that he “loved them.” He told me that he loved me because his wife’s name is also Sara. Classy. Her friend Meagan told me that Gooding grabbed her a$$ (ed.), and confirmed that he tried to grab Sara’s chest. She also said that after leaving the area, they ran into him again on the dance floor, where he grabbed Meagan’s breast and pinched her nipple. She said he was repeatedly bothering and harassing women even after they told him to stop. A third woman, Molly, says, Cuba Gooding Jr. came into Maloney’s Pub in Albuquerque on March 1st, and the bar was fairly crowded at the time. No one seemed to notice or realize who he was when he first entered, and he inappropriately touched [Sara] and she immediately dismissed him. Someone then recognized him and swarms of people started crowding around him to take pictures. Sara and I took a picture with him, and he attempted to grab her breasts in the process. Later on the night, he came up to me, grabbed my face, and kissed my cheek. He asked where I was staying and told me I would be staying with him tonight, making lewd comments about his plans to sleep with me that night. He mentioned that he his happily married with three kids, but “not tonight.” He also said I was “probably like 12″ years old (I am actually 23 years old). I also witnessed him inappropriately touching a friend of mine, [Meagan], which caused her to be extremely upset. Another woman in the bar gave him a lap dance and when a man tried to take a picture, Gooding grabbed the phone, threatening to “break it in half,” and followed him to the bathroom, where he apparently punched him. Pop star will be laid to rest at New Hope Baptist Church in her native Newark, New Jersey, with no planned wake. The fallen pop diva will be laid to rest in her native Newark, New Jersey, a week after her death in a Los Angeles hotel room. A Houston family rep confirmed to MTV News that Houston’s invitation-only funeral will take place at New Baptist Church at noon on Saturday. Los Angeles County coroner officials completed Houston’s autopsy Sunday, and her body was released to her family the very next day and then flown back east, according to CNN. There have been rumors that there will be a public memorial at Newark’s Prudential Center with a ceremony similar to Michael Jackson’s high-profile farewell, but USA Today is reporting that such a plan was never in place and as of right now, the funeral is the only scheduled sendoff for the 48-year-old star. As a youth in Newark, Houston attended New Hope Baptist Church. In a statement issued to MTV News on Sunday, the Houston family expressed their grief in this trying time. “We are devastated by the loss of our beloved Whitney. This is an unimaginable tragedy, and we will miss her terribly,” the statement read. “We appreciate the outpouring of love and support from her fans and friends.” The cause of Houston’s death is still unknown. Assistant Chief Coroner Ed Winter of the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office continues to quell any speculation. “I know there are reports that she maybe was drowned or did she overdose, but we won’t make a final determination until all the tests are in,” he told CNN. Congrats to Nicki Minaj she has set a new record on Vevo with her brand new video “Stupid Hoe” getting 4.8 million views in 24 hours. Nicki also revealed yesterday via Twitter that she will be starring in a new film project. When asked about her plans for the day, she told her followers she’s “Shooting a mini movie.” Minaj was hush-hush on what kind of movie she was filming only adding that it was for the initials “RH.” Hopefully this won’t be some kind of Lady Gaga -like lengthy music video. After being coy with her fans, Minaj wished them a good day. “So blessings & love to all of u!!! Excel today. Excel, ” she tweeted. Minaj did promise plenty of surprises before her April 3 release of Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, so whatever “RH” is might be part of the surprises.
