412 People Have Been Fatally Shot By Police This Year But NFL Won’t Let Players Kneel

T he number of police shootings has reached 412 so far in 2018, according to data published this month on  The Washington Post police shootings database. More shootings have happened this year between January and May than the same time last year, according to the Post’s report. Approximately 400 shootings had taken place between that five-month period in 2017. Eighty-five African Americans have died at the hands of police so far this year, said The Post, which has been keeping a record of every fatal shooting in the U.S. by a police officer in the line of duty since January 1, 2015. Eighty-two men and three women have been reported killed. The alarming numbers have stirred more conversations about police reform and accountability. As of May 15, 2018, 396 people have been shot & killed by the police, and we aren’t even halfway through 2018. #PoliceReform #PoliceAccountability https://t.co/4i4okfT9zX pic.twitter.com/lfhdH3jbMm — ACLU of Ohio (@acluohio) May 22, 2018 The high number of police shootings also motivated several NFL players’ kneeling protest. The NFL made a cowardly move to stop players from kneeling on the field for police brutality victims this week. With the rule change, the league gave into pressure from Trump and decided to punish players who get on one knee during the National Anthem to protest the disturbing amount of nationwide police shootings. Activists have steadily spoken out against the NFL’s new anthem policy announced Wednesday (May 23). With fatal police shootings on the rise, the fight against this pattern must continue to grow. Protests have already erupted against these shootings across the nation, and more police reforms must happen to stop this trend. Racial-biased policing needs to be pursued as the nation tries to end these brutality incidents. NY Jets Chairman Says He’ll Personally Pay Fines For Players Who Decide To Protest The National Anthem

NY Jets Chairman Offers To Pay Protest Fines While the NFL is aiming to demand that all players stand for the national anthem with “discipline” for grown-azz men in the form of strict fines…one team boss isn’t standing for it. NY Jets Chairman and CEO Christopher Johnson says his team has his support, regardless of if they choose to protest the anthem. According to NYPost , Johnson has said that the team will stand behind players who may choose to kneel , and will not issue any team fines. As he said in a statement: “I plan to sit in the very near term with Coach (Todd) Bowles and our players to discuss today’s decision regarding the National Anthem,” Johnson said in a statement. As I have in the past, I will support our players wherever we land as a team. Our focus is not on imposing any Club rules, fines, or restrictions. Instead we will continue to work closely with our players to constructively advance social justice issues that are important to us. I remain extremely proud of how we demonstrated unity last season as well as our players’ commitment to strengthening our communities.” And as he told Newsday , if the league imposes the fine themselves, the team will eat it. “I do not like imposing any club-specific rules. If somebody (on the Jets) takes a knee, that fine will be borne by the organization, by me, not the players. I never want to put restrictions on the speech of our players. Do I prefer they stand? Of course. But I understand if they feel the need to protest. There are some big, complicated issues that we’re all struggling with, and our players are on the front lines. I don’t want to come down on them like a ton of bricks, and I won’t. There will be no club fines or suspensions or any sort of repercussions. If the team gets fined, that’s just something I’ll have to bear.” Nice. How many teams do you think will follow suit? Getty

Petty Patrol: 8 Of The Most Outrageous & Ridiculous NFL Fines Of All Time

See more here:

Source: colin Kaepernick / Getty So the NFL has officially made it crystal clear that they don’t stand in solidarity with people who are protesting the epidemic of Black folks being murdered by law enforcement on a daily basis.   The organization has decided to fine any player who doesn’t stand during the National Anthem. Players will be allowed to stay in the locker room during the national anthem, but their teams will be fined by the league if they go onto the field and kneel. If the NFL thing was about the flag & anthem, you’d be outraged when Trump doesn’t hold a hand over his heart & botches the words. If it was about troops, you’d be as pissed about Niger as about Benghazi. It’s not principle. It’s about control of brown bodies. Stop the bullshit. — Jeffrey Wright (@jfreewright) May 23, 2018 Does that mean team owners were lying about not hiring Colin Kaepernick for “other reasons unrelated to his protest?” Colin Kaepernick kneeling should have led to a real conversation about police brutality. Instead it led to a bunch of faux patriots dictating who does and doesn't support the military. And the NFL owners bought right into it. — Jake Dawson (@jdny2) May 23, 2018 But even before his kneeling days, Kaep wasn’t afraid to take a stand for the greater good.   Back in 2014, he was fined $10,000 for rocking Pink Beats Headphones in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The NFL has an exclusive partnership with Bose headphones, so they weren’t having any of the Beats’ madness.   Hit the flip for more of the most bizarre fines given in NFL history.
