L ess than a week after the 2018 midterm elections, a Black man who was paralyzed in a 2012 police shooting wants to campaign for office in 2019. See Also: Jury Deliberates In Case Of White Cops Accused Of ‘Terrorizing And Paralyzing’ Black Driver Leon Ford announced on Sunday, exactly six years after the shooting, that he’s campaigning for a seat on the Pittsburgh City Council, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported. The 25-year-old candidate, who was surrounded by family, friends, and supporters, vowed to amplify the voices of Black people and the youth in his community if elected. “I think that from the response alone, you see people excited in a way they’ve never really been excited for a city council race in a very long time, from elders to the youth,” said Ford. In 2019, gubernatorial races will headline down-ballot elections in Kentucky, Louisiana, and Mississippi. Several state, local legislatures, and mayoral races are also on tap. Ford entered the spotlight in Pittsburgh in a disturbing case of alleged police excessive force . Pittsburgh Police Officer David Derbish shot him five times during a November 2012 traffic stop and a second officer was accused of assaulting him. A lengthy federal trial in 2017 ended with a jury in deadlocked on Derbish’s liability. After a second trial was scheduled to get underway, Pittsburgh settled the case for $5.5 million in January 2018. “We are very happy for Leon and his family to have closure so he can move forward and be the great and successful man he is destined to be,” a statement from Ford’s lawyer said following the settlement. Ford is indeed moving forward with his life. He’s competing as a Democrat, and he has the May 21 primary circled on his calendar. Larissa Dos Santos Lima, who plays a major role on this season of 90 Day Fiance, was arrested for domestic battery in Las Vegas on Saturday, November 10. According to Clark County inmate records, she was originally being held on $3,000 bail following her arrest, although her court records have been updated to reflect a $2,000 reduction. While details are still coming in, Larissa changed her Instagram handle to @helpmeimwithoutphone shortly before the incident went down… … and also shared a number of disturbing messages on Saturday. “HELP ME …HE TURNED OFF HIDE MY PHONE HELP ME HE WANTS TO CALL THE POLICE HELP ME,” she wrote at one point, including her own phone number on her online biography. In a series of since-deleted Instagram Story messages, meanwhile, Colt allegedly told his followers: “Larissa was arrested this afternoon. She suffers from high anxiety and several depression. She over reacted to problems that do not exist.” Very weird and sort of scary, right? Colt went on to explain that he “proceeded to deactivate her phone to try to defuse the situation,” but that their disagreement “escalated and matters became worse” and added: “She felt this action was a threat towards her and tried to reach out for help. “Not long after her cry was posted, the police came and knocked down the front door. They drew their guns at me and handcuffed me.” Larissa hails from Brazil and met Colt via social media. The two met up in Mexico and Colt later proposed after just a few days together. According to court records obtained by E! News, this is Larissa’s second arrest for domestic violence, although charges from earlier this year were dropped. Revealing that he and Larissa are married, Colt continued over the weekend: “The police interviewed us but not long after they decided to arrest Larissa. No one was hurt and I did not press charges against my wife. “However it is policy in the state of Nevada that since we are in a domestic partnership, someone had to be arrested.” We’ll have plenty more on this story as more news breaks. For now, it may simply raise questions about a show based on two people who have just met and decided to get married, mostly so one of them can remain in the United States. “The couples must marry before the visas expire in 90 days, or else the visitors have to immediately return to their countries,” reads the official TLC description. Is this really something around which we ought to build an entire program? Does it not increase the possibility that something such as this arrest can take place, as one person’s future is based on making a marriage work with, basically, a complete stranger? Just sounds like a recipe for disaster.
S prinkled among the millions of people in Georgia who were forced to wait as long as four hours just to cast their ballots were devoted African-American voters, many of whom couldn’t afford to take off that much time from work. But the chance at helping to make history by electing Stacey Abrams as the country’s first Black woman governor was something they just couldn’t pass up. In the face of numerous obstacles from the big bag of racist tricks intended to suppress the Black vote, the display of perseverance was impressive, LaTosha Brown , a co-founder of the Black Voters Matter Fund, told NewsOne this week. Black folks did the thing,” said Brown who spent Election Day in Georgia helping to monitor and address voter suppression efforts. Brown glowingly recalled how African-American voters came out in droves to elect dozens of candidates who looked like them and to vote for tangible change across the country, but especially in places such as Georgia, Florida and Tennessee. “The turnout, the energy, the way I saw Black people working on the ground — listen, we did our part,” she added. Across the country, overall turnout was at a 50-year high , according to NPR. More than 47 percent of eligible voters cast a ballot. Exit poll figures also showed that, indeed, African-Americans turned out in significant numbers. Black voters accounted for about 12 percent of the overall turnout—comparable to the previous midterm high of 13 percent in 2014, ABC News reported. Although several Black candidates made history, including Lucy McBath , Ayanna Pressley and Jahana Hayes , two of the biggest prizes have so far eluded Black voters. Andrew Gillum , who was competing to become Florida’s first Black governor, failed to win his race , while Abrams in Georgia was pushing for a recount or runoff election after a close race riddled with voter suppression. “Don’t write us off. We ain’t out the game yet,” Brown stated with deep conviction, adding that those two races were still major victories in Southern states stained by a blood-soaked history of white supremacy. Georgia! Amendment 4 automatically restored voting rights to 1.4 million ex-felons across Florida. Under the state’s felon voting ban, approximately 21.5 percent of African Americans couldn’t vote before Tuesday. In Nashville, Amendment 1 created a new citizen-led panel to hold the police accountable. Voters overwhelmingly passed the amendment after “a decades-long push from Black leaders in the city,” the Tennessean reported. Those successes didn’t come easy because of widespread voter suppression efforts against the Black people. From her vantage point at ground zero, Brown witnessed many of the suppression attempts in real-time. At a polling station that normally has 30 voting machines, there were just 15, she recalled. There were places that didn’t have power cords for voting machines and others where aging voting equipment was inoperable. Image via Getty Husband Admits To Killing Wife To New Girlfriend A Welsh man’s murderous rage and thirst for a new love will likely lead him into a prison cell for a very long time. According to Metro UK , 64-year-old Derek Potter had literally gotten away with murder earlier this year when he told police that his wife Lesley hanged herself in their home. An investigation revealed nothing suspicious. One week before Lesley was to be cremated, Derek did something…unthinkable, inexplicable, and downright dumb. After a few beers with this potential new boo, he admitted to her that he had strangled his wife to death. 32-year-old Natalia Mikhailoea-Kisselevskaia says she was shocked at what she heard: Natalia said: ‘We were still on our first pints when he said: “I have got to tell you something”. ‘He said: “I love my wife very much but she was doing my head in so I strangled her”.’ Miss Mikhailoea-Kisselevskaia said she was left ‘shocked’ and thought he was ‘joking’. She added: ‘He was saying it with a straight face – no tears in his eyes, no laughter. ‘I thought: “Oh my god, he’s done it”.’ Natalia took her story straight to the police, an investigation was re-opened, and jury found him guilty as hell after only an hour and eleven minutes of deliberation. In his defense, Derek told the court that Natalia “misunderstood” what he told her and he was really talking about kinky sex with his wife. ‘I said I had nearly killed her six years ago, and that is why I stopped drinking, and she misunderstood me. ‘I’ve had a great sex life, I’ve been married four times. I’ve had a crazy sex life in my time.’ But he denied to police that she died during a sex game. He told them: ‘This was suicide.’ Wow. SMH.

According to reports via the New York Post , 35-year-old Khaled Ali was charged with kidnapping after he refused to release four passengers from his vehicle. The kidnapping occurred when a man requested a ride, but Ali continued to drive in the opposite direction while denying the male passenger’s request to stop. As Ali ignored the man’s pleas to take him to his actual destination, the male passenger eventually jumped out of the vehicle. Following the first horrific incident, the Garden Grove native allegedly did the same exact thing to a woman, who also ended up jumping out of the car, along with to two final passengers who jumped out during the police chase. Ali led the cops on a chase through Santa Monic before finally being stopped. Police say the motive for the driver’s behavior isn’t immediately clear. Khaled Ali was charged on Friday and could face more than 23 years in prison if convicted. It’s unclear whether or not he has an attorney.

Farrah Abraham is a mess. You know it, we know it, whatever random person who knows nothing about Teen Mom but has seen a friend post something on Facebook about her sex tape knows it. Literally everyone who has every heard of Farrah, even in passing, even just once, knows it. But man, she really proved it earlier this year when she got herself arrested at that hotel , huh? You probably remember all the details because it really was just an insane little story, but let’s go over the details real quick, just in case. Back in June, Farrah was staying at a hotel in Beverly Hills with her daughter, Sophia. While little Sophia was asleep upstairs, being watched over by a nanny, Farrah was down in the lounge, making a scene. For whatever reason, she began yelling at other hotel guests, cursing and really just being Farrah at them. It was bad enough that a security guard was called over to escort her away, but by then, she was already too fired up. According to the guard and several witnesses, she assaulted the poor man by grabbing his head and shaking it. She also hit him in the face with her forearm because … well, we’re sure it seemed like a good idea to her at the time. After that, someone had the good sense to call the police, but you know our girl didn’t react too well to that. Farrah reportedly gave the officers a hearty “go f-ck yourselves,” and she tried pulling the “don’t you know who I am?” card a few times. Believe it or not, the police officers were not impressed, and she spent the night in jail. A few weeks later, she was charged with battery , and also with resisting arrest. If found guilty, she was facing up to 18 months in jail. Pretty neat, right? She was ultimately offered a plea deal, and if she accepted it, the battery charge would be dropped altogether. Instead of going to jail, she’d have a few years of probation, as well as mandatory anger management classes. It definitely would have been smart to take that deal, but Farrah is not exactly known for being smart. Instead, she refused the deal and maintained her innocence . Because, you know, the police officers, the security guard, and all the hotel guests who witnessed this nightmare all came up with the exact same lie. So she turned down the deal a couple of times , but yesterday, she had one more hearing. What happened? Well, this time around, Farrah actually managed to get a little bit of sense. She pleaded guilty to one misdemeanor, the resisting arrest one, and after she did that, she received her sentence. And sorry, but she won’t be going to jail (this time). Nope, she’s on probation for two years, and she also has to complete five days of community service and 12 hours of anger management. Don’t worry though, because nobody broke that delusional spirit of hers ! “In my eyes I’m not guilty as my property was still at the hotel and people were setting me up, withholding my phone and my car,” she said in a statement to E! News. Jenelle Evans swears she is in a happy and healthy marriage. The veteran Teen Mom 2 star has denied all allegations of abuse against her husband, David Eason. Evans has even recorded a video in which she lays out a passionate defense of Eason as a man who would never hurt her or harm her. But scenes from a different video may tell a different story. A few weeks since Evans was rushed to the hospital after some sort of confrontation with Eason, the MTV personality shared a video of her; her husband; and her kids at a pumpkin patch. “Butterflies in our tummies!” Evans wrote as a caption to the footage, which featured her and her loved ones bumping along in some kind of train-like ride. However, astute social media users have slowed down this video and studied Jenelle's neck area, taking note of where Eason allegedly hit or shoved her earlier this month. Police responded to reports of a domestic disturbance on David and Jenelle’s property on Saturday, October 13. This was the prevailing assumption, considering the couple’s contentious history and Eason’s very clear problem with anger. 3. Then, There was the 911 Call… This seemed to be the most damning evidence to date of Eason’s abusive nature. “My husband, he just assaulted me,” Evans tells the operator, through years, in this upsetting call. 4. What Else Did She Detail? “He pinned me down on the ground in the yard, and I think I heard my f–king collarbone crack and I can’t move my arms,” Jenelle added to the dispatcher. 5. What Caused the Confrontation? There’s no excuse for laying a hand on a woman, of course, but Evans said David “got violent because he was drinking.” Not exactly a shocker, right? 6.
