‘Fright Night’ Star Christopher Mintz-Plasse ‘Gets’ Vampire Appeal

‘It was cool to play something evil and dark,’ actor tells MTV News. By Terri Schwartz, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Christopher Mintz-Plasse in “Fright Night” Photo: DreamWorks The vampires in “Fright Night” might not sparkle in the sunlight, but star Christopher Mintz-Plasse still understands their appeal. “Now I get it, why people play vampires,” he told MTV News during Movie Awards Sneak Peek Week. “I’m like, there’ve been vampire movies. [But] that was really a lot of fun to do.” The crux of the issue, director Craig Gillespie explained, is that vampires are sexy. He made the argument that there are always vampire movies, but their popularity surges in waves. In the ’80s, there was “The Lost Boys,” in the ’90s there was “Interview With the Vampire” and now it’s “The Twilight Saga” keeping the vampire craze afloat. The key was finding a good vampire to sit at the flick’s center, and Gillespie said he always knew lead Colin Farrell would be good for the part. Farrell’s character, Jerry, is dark but also has a humorous aspect, and Gillespie was impressed with Farrell’s ability to walk that line. He knew it wouldn’t be a hard sell either because Hollywood celebrities tend to be drawn to vampire films. “It’s one of those things that actors love to do, because you’re getting to play sort of an iconic kind of character that has all this history with them. You get to have a lot of fun with it,” Gillespie explained. Mintz-Plasse certainly did. His character, Ed, gets ( spoiler alert! ) converted to a vampire in the movie, and Mintz-Plasse was psyched to whip out his inner bloodsucker. “It was cool to play something evil and dark,” he said. New Black Kid On The Block: Herman Cain Is The First Republican Candidate To Officially Decide To Run For President

Nevermind the dead birds, now we KNOW the world is coming to an end! Herman Cain is officially the first Republican candidate to form and exploratory committee to run for the President of the United States. According to Gawker : Yesterday, we noted that no Republican candidates had joined the 2012 presidential race, even though many did by this stage in the last cycle. But today someone formed an exploratory committee! He’s Herman Cain. Who the hell is Herman Cain? Cain hosts a conservative radio show in Atlanta. Tea Party groups and ultra-conservative business leaders at places like the Club for Growth adore him. He was a mathematician for the department of the Navy and holds a master’s in computer science. He was a corporate vice president for Burger King before becoming chief executive of Godfather’s Pizza, and he’s chaired the boards of both the National Restaurant Association and the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City. He has been an African-American for the past 65 years. (Previously, he was unborn.) And today he’s formed the first Republican presidential exploratory committee. We thank him for finally kicking this shit off. And he has the potential to leave some mark on the race, given his popularity among dingbats. From National Journal: While he would undoubtedly enter the race as a significant longshot, Cain has generated considerable buzz among grassroots conservatives and Tea Party activists, having spoken at dozens of rallies nationwide. Cain, who is African-American, recently emerged as the surprise winner of a presidential primary bracket on the conservative blog RedState, edging former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin (R) by 800 votes. Further demonstrating that he should not be dismissed as a fringe candidate, Cain was one of 12 potential Republican presidential hopefuls invited to an upcoming forum in Des Moines, Iowa. The event, organized by Iowa’s Faith and Freedom Coalition — an influential social conservative group with ties to the Tea Party — will likely be the first forum of the 2012 contest. Can we just name him president right now? Otherwise we’d have to label him a “dark horse” candidate, and the Internet would call us racist.

THG Asks: Does Miley Cyrus Deserve Criticism Over the Bong Video?

Welcome to THG’s new feature, in which two of our celebrity gossip experts debate topical issues in the entertainment world and you decide who wrote the winning argument! Today, THG Asks : Does Miley Cyrus deserve the criticism over her infamous bong video? YES by Hilton Hater Legality does not equate to morality. At age 18 and partying in California, no one can argue that Miley Cyrus wasn’t within her rights to smoke salvia out of a bong . But is that the only criteria by which we judge celebrities, whether or not they can get arrested for an act? Miley isn’t stupid. She’s aware that cameras follow her around and that her fans are mostly young girls. In exchange for the popularity and money she’s earned in her career, is it really too much to ask to refrain from harmful acts in public? The law isn’t the issue here. It’s the impression Cyrus gives off. Heck, she could star in an adult film tomorrow and police couldn’t do a thing. But would supporters back this decision, as well, simply because Miley isn’t violating any laws? Miley Cyrus Bong Video NO by Free Britney

Die Antwoord Call Major-Label Debut $O$ ‘Too Fast, Too Furious’

‘Our style is incredibly, like, WWF,’ rapper Ninja tells MTV News. By Rya Backer Die Antwoord Photo: MTV News South Africa’s Die Antwoord first made a splash in the States earlier this year with their stunningly edited, sometimes-creepy video for “Enter the Ninja.” The song, a mix of rave, rap and the uniquely childlike voice of the duo’s female contingency, Yo-Landi Vi$$er, was only an introduction into their world. “Our style is incredibly, like, WWF, too fast, too furious, but the ingredients are South African,” rapper Ninja told MTV News about the band’s sound and aesthetic. They’re also heavily rooted in the Zef subculture. “Zef is, like, a style,” he explained, “but it’s got a lot of … it’s got like a look. It’s a South African style that we just kind of … it’s broken around and we kind of stuck it together. But there’s a whole Zef language.” The slang is an integral part of the Die Antwoord canon and is featured heavily throughout their major-label debut, $O$. Because their American fans — they admit they first broke out Stateside before their popularity grew back home — aren’t privy to some of the vernacular, we had them translate some popular Zef words and phrases. ” ‘Vat pomp’: When you say ‘what’s up,’ like, ‘hello,’ we say ‘vat pomp.’ It means, like, ‘What’s pumping?’ ” Ninja explained. “But they’re not actual words. They’re slang words, but there’s lots of them.” The band has pitched in to make sure nothing gets lost in translation. “We started to notice that the Zef slang is kind of like — if you know ‘Lord of the Rings,’ it’s kind of like learning the Elvish alphabet,” Ninja said. “So we put all our translations, ’cause people always don’t know what we’re talking about … [on] our interwebs on DieAntwoord.com . It’s all our lyrics with Zef translations to help people understand. People enjoy that kind of thing. It’s like a whole world opens up.” What do you think of Die Antwoord? A Confusing Situation: Mike Sorrentino to Launch Clothing Line

Wanna look like The Situation? Forget fake tanning and crunches. Jersey Shore star Mike Sorrentino is set to make it easy for fans to copy his unique look: Us Weekly reports the well-chiseled ladies’ man has partnered with Dilligaf by Bohica Bill to launch a line of “couture” clothing. It will hit stores next month. This is more confusing than the popularity of Jersey Shore itself: When was the last time The Situation even wore a shirt?!? “Mike ‘The Situation’ embodies our irreverent approach to life,” wrote Dilligaf President Jodi Massry, supposedly seriously, in a statement. “He lives the ‘Let’s not take things so seriously’ mentality every day.” By the way: Dilligaf stands for “Do I Look Like I Give A F***. Seriously. We couldn’t make that up if we tried.

Feature Release: Facebook “Like” and Popularity Improvements

Despite our recent DDoS attacks, we managed to squeak out a feature release for the site last Tuesday. Unfortunately, the DDoS attack resumed shortly after. “For the love of Pete, tell me what was in the release!!” While this wasn’t a huge release (those are being reserved for later this month), we were able to sneak a few improvements in that you may have already noticed. Here’s the rundown: Facebook “Like” Those of you with Facebook accounts will find that sharing Current TV with your friends just got easier. Have you met the Like button yet? Chances are, you’re already familiar with it on Facebook, and now we’ve implemented Like buttons on all of our content, too. Have you told your friends about Mariana Van Zeller’s recent Vanguard documentary “Missionaries of Hate” yet? Make sure your Facebook account is connected to your Current profile, then visit the “Missionaries of Hate” page and click the “Like” button to share it with your friends and family on Facebook. Go ahead. Try it out. I’ll wait for you here. Popularity and Voting Updates A few weeks ago, we discovered a few kinks in our popularity-scoring algorithm thanks to a few cases where stories were pushed onto the homepage to prove a point. Your message was heard loud and clear, and I’m happy to report that we’ve deployed a couple of notable tweaks to the system that should vastly improve things going forward. First, your red votes will factor in more prominently going forward. For those of you familiar with gaming mechanics, our voting system needed to be re-balanced to better account for red votes. No longer! So, fire up your voting fingers. Vote up. Vote down. Vote often. Your votes help determine what belongs in the popular stories feed, so if something looks old, out of place, or you just don’t think it’s as important as other stories out there, you know what to do. But wait, there’s more. We’ve received a plenty of feedback from our community about the ability to push stories into popularity based upon multiple comments from a very few people on a thread. It goes something like this: Person 1: I think this is great. Person 2: @Person 1 — I disagree! Person 1: @Person 2 – Well, I disagree with your disagreement! Person 2: @Person 1 – OK, but your disagreement with my disagreement is disagreeable to me! Person 1: @Person 2 – Sir or Madam, PLEASE validate my disagreement with you! This exchange continues on for 40-50 comments, and the next thing you know the story is ranked in the top 10 popular stories on the homepage. Not cool, right? Well, we’ve now implemented a new addition to comment scoring that will factor for this sort of thing. We would like to see stories containing a wide spanning discussion, with input from a variety of people via comments and votes, not just the back-and-forth between a select few. So there you have it! We are already working on the next couple releases which plan to include revamped profile pages, new activity streams, and Twitter integration. Stay tuned! added by: mario_a
