‘Harry Potter’ Stars Offer Advice To Younger Selves

‘Just enjoy every day of it,’ Rupert Grint tells his 12-year-old self. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Rupert Grint Photo: MTV News After eight films, 10 years, millions of fans won over and billions of dollars made, we could talk about the “Harry Potter” films and their famous castmembers forever. Their incredible evolution from kids to young adults, the number of esteemed adult British actors who made appearances in the films over the years, the undying love from a dedicated and loyal fanbase and so on. When MTV News sat down with Rupert Grint and Tom Felton recently, we asked them if, when looking back at the incredible journey they’ve been on for so long, they have any advice they would offer their young selves when they first joined the cast in 2000. “I should have a witty answer prepared, but I don’t,” Felton admitted. “I guess I’d just say, ‘Enjoy it and try to take in as much as you can.’ There’s nothing I’d change, to be honest with you. “I’ve had a good time over the years,” Felton added. “I wouldn’t change a day of it. [I’d] just take a bit more in. When you’re 12 or 13, you don’t care about anything. You just want to go home and play PlayStation, so there are definitely some memories I wished I’d taken in.” Grint echoed Felton’s sentiments: “Yeah, [I’d tell myself to] enjoy it,” he said. “I would never imagine 10 years from then we would be talking about the eighth film. I didn’t even see past two, really. It’s just been this gradual thing. Yeah, just enjoy every day of it.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . ‘Harry Potter’ Star Matthew Lewis Recalls Embarrassing Run-In With Fan

Actor who plays Neville Longbottom describes being caught in ‘horrible expression of narcissism.’ By Kara Warner Matthew Lewis at the New York City premiere of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2” Photo: Getty Images There is almost an endless list of reasons why the stars of the “Harry Potter” movies are beloved. Having watched them grow up onscreen, portraying our favorite J.K. Rowling-created characters, we here at MTV News, as well as the millions of Potter fans around the world, feel a special connection to the cast that you don’t often experience in films and on TV these days. Not only that, but each and every member of the cast has a reputation for being just as delightful offscreen as they are on. There are no big egos or tyrants in the bunch; they are humble, grateful young adults. Except when it comes to causing scenes in Times Square, that is. When MTV News caught up with rising star Matthew Lewis (a.k.a. Neville Longbottom) at the New York premiere of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2” earlier this week, he told us about an embarrassing moment he endured during a recent run-in with a fan. “I had a terribly embarrassing moment in New York City,” Lewis said. “I was in Times Square with my friend Nick, and there was a big ‘Harry Potter’ poster in Times Square,” he explained. “I was pointing out where I was on the poster. I said, ‘I’m just there next to Emma [Watson],’ and as I started pointing at the poster somebody tapped me on the shoulder and said, ‘Excuse me, are you Matthew Lewis?’ “And it was just this horrible expression of narcissism in the world,” Lewis continued with renewed embarrassment. “I’m there in Times Square pointing at myself going, ‘Hey, that’s me.’ It was awful. But she was lovely. We have the best fans in the world.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . ‘Spider-Man’ Star Andrew Garfield Covers Entertainment Weekly

‘I related to Peter Parker so much because I felt like someone else inside,’ the actor reveals to mag. By Terri Schwartz Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man on the cover of Entertainment Weekly Photo: Entertainment Weekly It’s been more than six months since the world first saw the new “Amazing Spider-Man,” Andrew Garfield, in his Spidey suit . Now, fans are getting another look as he graces the cover of Entertainment Weekly in anticipation of next week’s trailer premiere and San Diego Comic-Con panel. Perhaps more important, the entertainment magazine has confirmed that “Pirate Radio” star Rhys Ifans will play Spider-Man foe the Lizard in the upcoming flick. Up until now, it had only been rumored that Ifans had been cast to play the famous villain. On the EW cover, fans get a fuller view of Garfield himself; the special characteristics of his Spidey costume seem to be secondary in the latest image. The story gives an inside look at the set and some new photos, as well as interviews with castmembers and director Marc Webb. Specifically, Garfield admits that the part is one he’d always dreamed of playing. “I related to Peter Parker so much because I felt like someone else inside,” he says of Spider-Man’s alter ego. “I loved the comic books and the animated TV series and I even dressed up as Spider-Man as a kid.” Webb adds, “Ultimately, what this movie is about is a kid who grows up looking for his father and finds himself. And that’s a Spider-Man story we haven’t seen before.” When MTV News spoke to Garfield’s “Spider Man” co-star Emma Stone in June, the actress said she was impressed by how good he looked in his costume. “He looks like Spider-Man, ya know?” she laughed. “It’s pretty exciting.” In other exciting “Amazing Spider-Man” news, SuperHeroHype.com is reporting that a full-length trailer for the movie is set for release next week. The site is operating under the assumption that this trailer will be the same one Sony Pictures unveils at the “Spider-Man” San Diego Comic-Con panel on Friday. But it may also run in front of select screenings of “Captain America: The First Avenger” in its July 22 opening weekend. ‘Harry Potter’ Stars Felt ‘Weird’ During Epilogue Scene

‘The images of me still haunt me,’ Rupert Grint tells MTV News of his flash-forward makeup. By Terri Schwartz, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson in “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2” Photo: Warner Bros. Though the story of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2” ends with Harry’s battle against Voldemort, the real goodbye to the franchise comes through an epilogue sequence at the end of the movie. It’s a scene MTV has been talking to the cast of the “Harry Potter” films about for many years, especially after the creative heads decided to age the stars using makeup instead of cast a new set of actors. Now that the film is less than 24 hours away from being released, the stars were ready to open up about how they felt about the final “Harry Potter” scene. “With the way it ends, it definitely got balanced right, it was believable, but it was a weird scene to film,” Rupert Grint told MTV News. The actor better known as Ron Weasley had to shoot the epilogue sequence twice after director David Yates decided that the first attempt didn’t work as well. In the scene that is used in “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2,” Ron has gained a pot belly and some stubble, but the first version also featured a serious receding hairline and some unflattering jowls. “The images of me still haunt me,” Grint admitted with a traumatized look on his face. “It was like this monster Donald Trump kind of mixture. It was scary.” His co-star Tom Felton agreed that Grint had not looked particularly attractive the first time, but he wasn’t entirely happy with how his character, Draco Malfoy, turned out either. His real-life girlfriend, Jade Olivia, played his onscreen wife in the sequence and he got to wear a muscle suit — “It was quite cool, I felt quite ripped” — but despite his “lovely goatee” and longer hairstyle, Felton wasn’t entirely satisfied with the results. Unfortunately for the “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” star, he and Olivia “nailed it” the first time, and thus weren’t called back for reshoots. “They were pretty cruel, don’t you think?” Felton asked. “Nineteen years, they were supposed to base it on Jason Isaacs! I look like Jason Isaacs’ dad! I mean, come on.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Rupert Grint’s Post-‘Harry Potter’ Plans: ‘Counseling’

Star jokes about his future after playing Ron Weasley for 10 years. By Terri Schwartz, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Rupert Grint Photo: MTV News After a decade’s worth of film premieres, “Harry Potter” star Rupert Grint walked the NYC red carpet for the last time for the beloved franchise on Monday night. “This is very special because this is the last one,” Grint told MTV News during the “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2” live stream. “This really is it. I’m going to miss not having that anymore. I’m going to miss the screaming. You don’t get that everywhere, and I’m going to miss that definitely.” Though he has two big projects lined up next — a biopic called “Eddie the Eagle” and the war film “Comrade” — he admitted that he would miss playing Ron Weasley, the character he had spent half of his life with. As he said during the London premiere, the fans have “made the last 10 years the best half of my life.” While co-star Emma Watson said she’d have a post-premiere brunch to commemorate the end of the franchise, Grint seemed stumped about what he’d do after the frenzy of this premiere week. “I really don’t know what I’m supposed to do,” he admitted. “Counseling. Just talk it all out.” One thing Grint certainly didn’t seem stressed out about, though, was losing MTV’s “Harry Potter” World Cup to Alan Rickman’s Severus Snape . In fact, he had previously predicted it when we caught up with him before the premiere. “I knew it! I knew it! I agree. It’s the best choice,” Grint admitted. ‘Harry Potter’ Star Daniel Radcliffe Describes Final Film As ‘Heartbreaking’

‘It wasn’t a sense of nostalgia and emotion caused by my own personal relationship with the films, I was a wreck because of the film itself,’ actor says at NYC premiere. By Terri Schwartz, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Daniel Radcliffe at the U.S. premiere of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2” Photo: Stephen Lovekin/ Getty Images NEW YORK — The “Harry Potter” film series celebrated its last U.S. premiere Monday night after a decade on the big screen, but leading man Daniel Radcliffe said that not all the tears he shed that night would be sad. “It’s a celebration,” the “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” star explained. “It’s 10 years of wonderful stories and storytelling, and it’s a celebration of 10 years work for us, so yeah we’re celebrating tonight, not mourning.” Radcliffe, who was “sweating like a pig in labor” on the hot July evening in NYC, will spend the next couple of weeks saying goodbye to the franchise that made him a star as he promotes the final installment, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2,” which hits theaters Friday. It will be an emotional journey for the stars and crew, as well as the fans who have been watching the movies since “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” opened in 2001, and who now have to accept that the “Potter” series has finally reached its end. Despite the fact that he has spent literally half his life in front of the camera filming the “Harry Potter” flicks, Radcliffe told MTV News on the red carpet that he still found himself emotionally affected by watching “Deathly Hallows: Part 2.” However, he seemed a bit surprised by the parts of the movie that left him in tears. “What I was impressed by was that it wasn’t a sense of nostalgia and emotion caused by my own personal relationship with the films, I was a wreck because of the film itself,” Radcliffe said. “You’ve got to have a heart of stone to not find part of it — especially Alan Rickman’s performance — heartbreaking, so yeah, I’ve done my fair share of crying already.” With “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” doing well on Broadway and his next flick, “The Woman in Black,” already wrapped, Radcliffe seems like he is trying to branch out as much as possible in his post-“Potter” life. Still, the 21-year-old actor said that he’s not willing to rule out returning to a film franchise just yet. “I think that we proved in doing ‘Potter’ that you can bring integrity and perpetual growth to a franchise. It doesn’t have to be a law of diminishing returns after the first film comes out,” Radcliffe explained. “Providing a script is good enough. I would absolutely do another, but it’s not something I’m looking for in the next couple of years, certainly.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . ‘Harry Potter’ Star Alan Rickman Thanks Fans For Snape’s World Cup Win

‘It’s a vote for ambiguity,’ Alan Rickman says at ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2’ premiere. By Kara Warner Alan Rickman Photo: MTV News After 7.4 million votes cast and over three weeks of intense, head-to-head wizard combat action in MTV’s “Harry Potter” World Cup, conflicted, calculating and beloved antihero Severus Snape has emerged a champion. It is an impressive feat indeed, with Snape having overcome heavy hitters and fan favorites Ron Weasley, Hermione Granger and Harry Potter himself. MTV News was lucky enough to present the fancy World Cup trophy to Alan Rickman, the man responsible for bringing life and suspense to the complex character, at Monday’s New York premiere of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2.” “You’re lying, aren’t you?” Rickman said upon learning the news of Snape’s victory. “I gotta get this on the plane tomorrow?” he joked. “Well, thank you, and it doesn’t weigh nothing,” he added, commenting on the prize’s weight. “Is it chocolate, I hope? Thank you very much.” When asked what the victory means to him, Rickman took it seriously and further thanked the character’s fans for recognizing the many aspects of Snape’s magical journey. “It’s a vote for ambiguity and things where you don’t quite know how they’re going to turn out,” he said of Snape’s is-he-evil-or-good story line. “And also, it’s [Snape’s] values that you can’t talk about without ruining the film, but things like courage and determination and loyalty and love, actually.” “Thank you,” Rickman reiterated before heading into the premiere. “I appreciate it; that’s an American thing.” Rupert Grint, whose Ron Weasley was our second-place finisher, was not surprised to learn that Snape triumphed over his character. In fact, he had predicted it. “I knew it,” he said with a smile when we broke the news to him. “It’s the right choice,” he admitted. ‘Harry Potter’ World Cup Recap: It’s Down To Ron And Snape!

Find out the winner during MTV News’ live stream at the ‘Deathly Hallows, Part 2′ red carpet, starting at 4:30 p.m. ET. By Eric Ditzian Alan Rickman as Professor Snape Photo: Warner Bros. In the beginning, there were 64 wizards, witches, elves and ghosts. Each one had been thrown into a cutthroat online tournament, decided by the public and subject to the passions and prejudices of die-hard fans, all to come up with the definitive answer to the question: Who is the greatest “Harry Potter” character of all time? Now that fantastical conundrum is down to just two people: potions master Severus Snape and Gryffindor great Ron Weasley. As of this writing, the two wizards are locked in the heated final match of MTV News’ “Harry Potter” World Cup . Voting is still going on, and the winner will be announced on Monday evening (July 11) during our live stream of the New York red-carpet premiere of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2,” which begins at 4:30 p.m. ET. It’s a remarkable feat that both men are left standing, considering that over 7 million votes have been cast throughout the four weeks of the tournament. Who would have guessed that Harry Potter himself would get chucked from the tournament in the Elite Eight, a victim of Snape’s fanbase and his remarkable character arc? Big bad Lord Voldemort didn’t even make it that far, losing in the third round to onetime Azkaban prisoner Sirius Black! And Cedric Diggory, hardly a first-tier character, was nonetheless thought to be a potential Cinderella story (given that Robert Pattison portrayed him onscreen). Yet “Potter” fans appeared to unite and overwhelm the “Twilight” set , sending Cedric to a third-round ouster. After upsets, crushing defeats and overwhelming victories, the Final Four fell into place late last week: Snape vs. Hogwarts witch Hermione Granger , and Ron Weasley vs. Black . Hermione may have been the smartest witch of her age and Ron’s cherished gal pal, but none of that was enough to vanquish Snape — the man who killed Dumbledore but is ultimately redeemed by the series’ end. Snape ended up with 62.7 percent of the vote, compared to Hermione’s 37.3 percent. The competition between Ron and Black was much closer. One wizard is Harry’s best friend; the other was Harry’s dad’s best friend. And in the end, barely one percentage point separated the two characters, with Ron ultimately surging forward for the win. So where does that leave us in the final matchup? Snape obviously has the momentum, given his commanding victory over Hermione. Ron has got to be looked at as weakened, considering how he barely survived his Final Four matchup. But he’s the last of the Big Three still alive, and fans of Hermione could well shift their allegiances to Ron. Anything can happen, though Rupert Grint, who plays Ron , isn’t holding out much hope. When we caught up with the actor on Sunday, before the finals had been solidified, he expressed skepticism that Ron could ever defeat Snape. “I don’t think I could do that — I mean, Snape is a great character,” he laughed. We’re streaming live from the red carpet at the New York premiere of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2” on Monday (July 11) at 4:30 p.m. ET. Emma Watson’s Post-‘Harry Potter’ Plans? ‘A Really Big Brunch’

Actress tells MTV News at ‘Deathly Hallows, Part 2’ premiere that she hopes to ‘sleep and reflect on the whole thing.’ By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Emma Watson Photo: MTV News In the midst of a mass of screaming fans, many of whom had camped out overnight, the beloved cast of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2” walked a lengthy red carpet at their final film’s premiere on a rather hot and steamy night in New York City. MTV News was right in the middle of the action, catching up with the billion-dollar franchise’s brightest stars. Aside from commentary about the heat and humidity on the star-studded red carpet, a lot of chatter centered on the bittersweet end of the “Potter” road — and, more importantly, what each castmember might be up to next. During our live-stream coverage, when we chatted with Emma Watson — who we most recently caught up with in the middle of filming an epic dance-party scene on the set of her next film, “The Perks of Being a Wallflower” — we asked the lovely lady if dancing might again be on her mind later in the evening. “Yes!” she exclaimed. “I’m like, ‘Get me to that dance floor,’ that is exactly what I need right now,” she said, hinting that she’ll be getting down at the afterparty. And what will she be up to tomorrow? How will she relax and wind down now that everything “Potter” is complete? “I’m usually working and going on to the next thing, but it really is over now, so I don’t know,” she admitted. “I think I’ll go and have a really big brunch. A really big brunch, and sleep and reflect on the whole thing.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .
