Dr. Conrad Murray’s Defense Plays its Hand, Insinuates Michael Jackson Did Himself In

After remaining mostly silent thus far, Dr. Conrad Murray’s lawyers laid some of the groundwork for their defense at his preliminary hearing today. He’s charged with involuntary manslaughter in Jackson’s death. Murray’s lawyer, J. Michael Flanagan, asked a Coroner investigator two questions: Was the IV bag of Propofol fingerprinted? Was it possible for Jackson to reach the syringes from the bed? The defense will argue that Jackson killed himself by accident as he grew frustrated when he couldn’t sleep and gave himself the fatal dosage. Propofol, a powerful anesthetic, is what killed Jackson. An investigator for the L.A. County Coroner’s Office said 12 bottles were found in his home. A pharmacist Dr. Murray used to order Propofol testified that the doctor ordered box after box of the drug in the two months before Jackson died. In all, Murray, the sole defendant in the Michael Jackson case , ordered 255 vials of Propofol in the two months leading up to the singer’s demise. It’s still very early, but this just makes Murray look …

Michael Jackson Doctor Conrad Murray Gets His Day In Court

Jackson’s choreographer Kenny Ortega is expected to testify at the preliminary hearing in Los Angeles. By Gil Kaufman Dr. Conrad Murray (file) Photo: Frederick M. Brown/ Getty Images More than a year and a half after the shocking death of Michael Jackson, the only person charged in the singer’s death, his personal physician Dr. Conrad Murray, will finally get his day in court. Murray, who has been charged with one felony count of involuntary manslaughter, will be in a Los Angeles courtroom on Tuesday (January 4) for the first day of a preliminary hearing to determine whether there is enough evidence to hold a full trial. The hearing, in front of Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor, is expected to last two weeks and feature testimony from more than two dozen witnesses, most of whom are medical experts. Prosecutors will attempt to show that Murray, who has pleaded not guilty to the manslaughter charge, was responsible for the singer’s death from an overdose of prescription drugs on June 25, 2009. Murray’s lawyers have said the doctor did inject the 50-year-old pop icon with the powerful surgical anesthetic propofol in an attempt to combat Jackson’s chronic insomnia, but that the dose “should have” not been enough to kill him. TMZ reported on Tuesday that one of the star witnesses during the preliminary hearing will be Jackson’s “This is It” choreographer Kenny Ortega. Citing an unnamed source, TMZ said that Ortega is expected to testify that the week before Jackson died , the singer complained that he felt cold, had the shakes and could not perform, which resulted in a canceled rehearsal. On the next day, June 20, 2009, an emergency meeting was reportedly called at Jackson’s rented Los Angeles mansion between the pop star, Ortega, several executives from concert promotion giant AEG Live and Murray. The meeting was described as “intense, loud and argumentative” and Ortega is said to have laid into Jackson, imploring the singer to take better care of himself in the lead-up to what was intended to be his live swan song. According to TMZ, Ortega is expected to testify that Murray said some “terrible things” during the meeting and displayed a lack of concern and respect for his patient, comments that could be “damaging” to Murray. Last week, one of the prosecutors in the case claimed that Murray’s lawyers were planning to claim that Jackson killed himself when he self-administered a lethal dose of propofol after waking up in a panic from a bout of fitful sleep. Ortega is also reportedly set to testify that in the two days before his death, Jackson was a changed man, impressing his backup dancers with his upbeat singing and dancing. The testimony could be key to the prosecutors’ case, since it could paint a portrait of Jackson as being healthy and energetic before Murray administered the cocktail of sedatives and propofol that allegedly resulted in the singer’s death. Heartbreaking: Afghanistan War Hero Dog Accidentally Euthanized in Arizona Today | Her Puppies Are Safe (?) in the U.S.

November 15th, 2010 06:44 PM ET Afghanistan dog hero accidentally euthanized A dog rescued from Afghanistan after she alerted soldiers to a suicide bomber was accidentally euthanized at an Arizona shelter on Monday. A Pinal County Animal Care and Control employee has been placed on administrative leave for failing to follow procedures and euthanizing the wrong dog. The dog, Target, was recently brought over from Afghanistan by a soldier who had returned from his tour of duty. Target was featured by CNN for heroism after saving dozens of soldiers from a suicide bomber on February 11. “She got her name because the Afghans we lived with were constantly trying to off her. She's been shot in the leg. … The Afghans actually ran over her,” Sgt. Christopher Duke said, who helped care for Target in Afghanistan and has adopted her packmate Rufus. “There's no killing this dog for sure. She's pretty much been through it all, ” he said upon their reunion in July in Georgia. Target's new owner, Army Sgt. Terry Young whose life was saved by the stray, helped bring the 2-ish-year-old from Afghanistan to her new home in Arizona. She disappeared from Young's home on Friday. Facebook postings requested help in finding her. Target saved U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan Animal Care and Control received a call about a stray female shepherd-mix dog in the San Tan Valley area on Friday. An animal control officer picked up the dog and brought her to the shelter where the dog stayed over the weekend. The dog was not microchipped or licensed with the county, shelter officials said. On Monday morning, the employee mistakenly took the dog out of its pen and euthanized it. The dog was not scheduled for euthanasia. “I am heartsick over this. I had to personally deliver the news to the dog’s owner, and he and his family are understandably distraught,” said Animal Care and Control Director Ruth Stalter. “We work hard get to strays reunited with their owners. When it comes to euthanizing an animal, there are some clear-cut procedures to follow. Based on my preliminary investigation, our employee did not follow those procedures.” In an e-mail, Young told CNN affiliate KPHO, “I'm an absolute wreck today, and it's everything in my power to hold it together for me and my family. My 4-year-old son just can't understand what is going on with Target and keeps asking me to get the poison out of her and bring her home. They don't want her to go be with God yet.” “An investigation is under way, and we will cooperate fully. We will also thoroughly review procedures to ensure that something like this does not happen again,” Stalter said. “This is unacceptable, and no family should be deprived of their companion because procedures were not followed.” Target was pregnant when she helped thwart the suicide bomber by attacking him. She had her litter of puppies in Afghanistan. Target's puppies have since been brought to the United States. added by: EthicalVegan

By Mawuse Ziegbe Justin Timberlake Photo: Christian Petersen/ Getty Images Justin Timberlake has been steadily at work building his Hollywood career and will show off his acting chops once again in an upcoming episode of “Family Guy” spin-off “The Cleveland Show.” Fox reps confirmed to MTV News that Timberlake will voice two characters: Paul, the boyfriend of Terry (voiced by “Saturday Night Live” and “30 Rock” actor Jason Sudeikis), as well as a “singing booger” belonging to Cleveland’s stepson Rallo, aptly named “Booger.” The episode is scheduled to air in February 2011. Timberlake is already earning rave reviews for his work as Paul. “Terry falls in love with a guy voiced by Justin,” “Cleveland” creator Rich Appel told Us Weekly. Appel added that Timberlake turns in a hilarious performance: “Justin is just hysterical!” Timberlake’s voice-over work is just the latest in a range of roles for the singer-turned-actor. He has reportedly been offered a role opposite Amanda Seyfried in the sci-flick “I’m.mortal,” in which people don’t get older than age 25. The singer has also been spotted filming the flick “Friends With Benefits” with Mila Kunis in New York and will hit the big screen in the David Fincher-helmed movie “The Social Network.” Timberlake plays Napster co-founder Sean Parker, who had a hand in the launch of the social-media phenomenon Facebook. Timberlake told MTV News last year that he was excited to work with Hollywood heavyweights Fincher and Aaron Sorkin on “The Social Network.” “To be honest, David Fincher is so ridiculously genius that we’re all just following his lead,” Timberlake said. “I think we want to tell the story, and I want to tell it through Sorkin’s words and Fincher’s eyes. I think Aaron did a lot of research on all of it. I don’t want to speak for another actor, but I think the consensus for all of us is that we just want to make a great film.” What are you expecting from Justin Timberlake’s “The Cleveland Show” appearance? ‘American Idol’ Wannabes ‘In It To Win It’ At New Jersey Tryouts

‘I’m going all the way to Hollywood this time,’ one repeat auditioner tells MTV News. By James Dinh An “American Idol” auditioner Photo: MTV News “American Idol” might not have announced the final judges’ panel for the upcoming 10th season, but that hasn’t kept the show from kicking off the search for new singers. On Tuesday, MTV News caught up with a few “Idol” wannabes at the East Rutherford, New Jersey, auditions to get an idea of who we’ll be rooting for next season. “I did make it to the next round,” Stewart Taylor told MTV News. “I’m very, very, very excited, and I’m not stopping here, baby. I’m going all the way to Hollywood this time, because I did this last year and almost made it. You’re in it to win it.” Gregory Higbee explained the preliminary audition round, which isn’t quite the wacky tryouts you see at the start of the season. “You stand up there, one at a time, in front of the judges and sing your song. It’s usually 20 or 30 seconds long, so after everyone sings, they’ll call you all towards the desk, and they’ll tell you whether you’ve made it or not,” Higbee explained. “There’s no feedback. There’s no ‘You should work on this.’ It’s just ‘I’m sorry, you didn’t make it.’ ” While some contestants, like Heather Snare, were confident they’d make it through, others were surprised when they heard the judges give them the boot. Erik Mason waited about an hour to see the judges but was not picked for the next round. “I was a Disney Dream Ticket holder , and I thought I was good enough, but I guess I’m not what they’re looking for,” he said. Another contestant, Gabrielle Gorman, told MTV News: “I thought it went well, but obviously it wasn’t good enough for this season.” But Gorman kept her head high as she revealed she’ll “have to come again next year and try again.” Marvin Black had already envisioned what it would be like to receive his “golden ticket,” but reality set in when he didn’t make it. “I thought I was going to make my way through, going to sing, get the golden ticket, run with the golden ticket to the backstage,” Black said. “But about after 30 to 45 seconds of singing, they cut my wristband and told me to get out.” Brianna Sent, who dressed up as a life-size banana, believed that if “American Idol” really wanted viewership, they would have let her though, noting, “Everyone was digging it, and it was happening.” How do you think this season of “American Idol” will fare compared to previous ones? Online, Men Say Are Willing to Split Housework

en and women are both likely to take a gender-neutral attitude toward most job occupations, according to the preliminary results of an online test launched in February that will keep crunching the data on an open-ended basis. Some jobs, however–such as carpenters and prison guards–were still considered male preserves, at least by male respondents. “For the most part, men felt that both genders would be equally suited to most job positions we listed on the test,” said Ilona Jerabek in a phone interview. Jerabek is president of PsychTests AIM, the Montreal-based psychological assessments company that developed the 126-question test that takes around 30 or 40 minutes to complete. “Gender Roles: Are We Still Playing the Part?” provides a description of where people fall on the traditional-modern continuum in professional and personal life. Nearly 200 men and more than 300 women–their ages range from under 17 to over 60–have responded so far. Most have been Caucasians from North America. Surprisingly, men have so far been more willing than women to divide household duties with their partners and take on jobs beyond such traditionally male tasks as mowing the lawn and taking out the garbage.
