‘Caged’ Star Wes Reflects On Series Premiere

‘In a cage fight it’s only two people. You’ve just got to live with what happens,’ Wes tells MTV News. By Tami Katzoff Wes in the series premiere of “Caged” Photo: MTV MTV’s new docu-series “Caged” premiered Monday night, and after seeing it, the first reaction of castmember Wes had little to do with his performance in the cage. “Damn, I was fat and out of shape,” the amateur mixed martial arts fighter told MTV News via Skype. “I guess because I hadn’t trained and fought in so long [before] the first episode, and then me getting back into it I was just like, wow, I didn’t really realize how big I was, and then the camera, it adds, like, 10 pounds.” “Caged” follows Wes and two fellow cage fighters, Daniel and Danger, as they try to better their lives in their small town of Minden, Louisiana. A revealing (and somewhat revolting) subplot in the premiere involved Wes trying to cut weight before a fight. He needed to shed several pounds in a short period of time. “We don’t have a sauna to go to in Minden, and I had three or four hours to make weight. And if you don’t make weight, you don’t fight,” Wes said. He decided to use the brutal Louisiana heat to his advantage. “I was like, the inside of my car’s leather, it will be like a sauna in there. So we get our sauna suit and I get in there and I’m just like, ‘Oh my God, I’m dying.’ You do what you got to do, I guess,” Wes said. The episode’s climax, fittingly, was the big night during which Wes, Danger and Daniel all had fights. Wes recalled that the time leading up to him stepping into the cage was filled with his usual pre-fight jitters. “Can you just imagine being somewhere, and then a guy comes running up at you and he’s like, ‘I’m about to fight you right now.’ And you take that little split second that you’re so scared, and then magnify it times a hundred and then stretch it out for about two weeks long,” he said. “Because two weeks before a fight you’re like, ‘Oh, sh–, I’ve got to fight a guy in a cage. And he’s going to try to kick me in the face, and he’s going to try to hurt me.'” During the final moments before the fight, the second-guessing comes. “You’re just sitting there and you’re waiting on them to call your name. You’re just like, ‘What am I doing here? I just want the electricity to go out, or some kind of natural disaster to happen so I don’t have to fight,’ ” Wes said. “And then they start playing your walk out music and you’re just like, ‘OK, this is what I’m here for, this is why I do this. I love this.’ And you go out there and it’s such an adrenaline rush, you really can’t explain it. It just takes over your body.” After Wes won his fight, he watched Daniel struggle in the cage. “Daniel, I’ve known him for a long time,” Wes said. “He’s unsociable and he looks like Justin Bieber, but he’s a cool cat.” It was clear that Daniel was having trouble. “I’m stressed out watching him,” Wes recalled. “And then he gets hit and I’m just like, ‘Oh my God.’ ” Daniel was down, and all Wes could do was watch. “You can’t do anything because in a cage fight it’s only two people,” he said. “You’ve just got to live with what happens.” Did you catch the premiere of “Caged”? How My Obsession Began!

If you were wondering how I got into this business, where my obsession with big fake breasts came from, this is it. Here’s Dolly Parton and her massive massive breasts at the premiere of some really crappy movie. Seriously, when I was a kid these things were it when it come to breasts. I’ve missed them. They’ve aged well, they look exactly the same as I remember them. Welcome back girls.

Kate Middleton Dazzles at War Horse Premiere

One day before her 30th birthday, the Duchess of Cambridge and husband Prince William attended the premiere of War Horse in London today. It marked first royal film premiere for Kate, who walked the carpet in a black, lace Alice Temperley gown (below). Suffice it to say, she looked fabulous. William shielded his wife from the rain with an umbrella. The film’s legendary director Steven Spielberg, along with War Horse ‘s lead actor, Jeremy Irvine, were also on hand for the star-studded UK event. The Foundation of Prince William and Prince Harry, which helps military servicemen and women transition back to their civilian lives, was the beneficiary. In addition to the organization, fans who got a glimpse of the royal couple in person were also big winners, although these Kate Middleton pictures will do! [Photos: WENN.com]

Las Vegas Set To Launch EDM Into High Gear In 2012

Marquee Nightclub’s one-year anniversary rings in new year with performances by Avicii, Kaskade. By Sam Hendrick Kaskade celebrates New Year’s Eve at Marquee Nightclub in Las Vegas Photo: Ethan Miller/ Getty Images Two years ago, we probably wouldn’t be writing this story. In fact, nobody would be. But dance music has taken Sin City by storm so rapidly that it’s simply impossible to ignore. Last year drew America’s largest EDM festival to Las Vegas. And with it came a core of A-list international acts passing through town and calling many of the city’s hottest venues home, turning America’s Playground into what some called America’s Ibiza . As the American palate skews ever toward dance, Las Vegas club life is healthier than ever. MTV News ventured back to the desert to celebrate the one-year anniversary of Marquee Nightclub and further prove that this EDM mecca is not only thriving but poised to smash 2012. “I think it’s only fitting that we ended the year with two amazing artists [Kaskade and Avicii],” said Jason Strauss, owner and co-founder of Strategic Group, the entity behind Marquee, Tao and LAVO. “To have an explosive partner artist like Tim [Avicii] to be with us is going to be historic for us and really tie in this whole year the way it should be”. Marquee certainly has reason to celebrate. In just one year, it’s been able to obtain a power lineup of residencies from the likes of Above & Beyond, ATB, Benny Benassi, Chuckie, Dirty South, Erick Morillo, Kaskade, Markus Schulz and Redfoo. Add Hardwell and a half dozen new DJs to the 2012 lineup, along with cutting-edge sight and sound, and it’s clear that Marquee has planted a flag in the upper echelon of the Vegas EDM scene. “I really like the club feeling of Marquee,” Avicii (born Tim Bergling) said prior to his set. “The production is amazing and that kind of creates a really unique vibe from the DJ perspective.” This past weekend, the mega venue started off in high gear with a staggering 12-hour set from Kaskade , followed by an anniversary show from Avicii, who just a couple of years ago, couldn’t even buy a lady a drink. “I had my first gig at Wet Republic about two years ago and they wouldn’t even let me into the club,” he recalled. “They had two guards escort me to the DJ booth and then straight off because of alcohol and everything.” Avicii and a slew of other influential players have partnered with some of the world’s premier venues to bring EDM into the heart of American cool culture. “It’s been big all throughout America, but I think this is where you can really see it because you get the biggest DJs in the world playing here every week,” Avicii said. “I don’t know any other place that has the same lineups that Vegas does.” “Everyone goes there. People from all kinds, all sorts, they like all kinds of music,” Fedde le Grand recently told MTV News. “It’s very important that dance music is in Vegas because people from all around come. Especially with dance music, you have to experience it to really get it.” EDM’s influence in Vegas has become so prominent that the city has declared an official holiday honoring one of the genre’s biggest names. Mayor Carolyn Goodman has issued a proclamation officially declaring January 2, 2012, “deadmau5 Day” in the City of Las Vegas, marking the date deadmau5 launched his exclusive partnership with Wynn Las Vegas. Do you plan to be in Vegas in 2012? Tell us which EDM artist you’d like to see while in Sin City in the comments below!

‘Jersey Shore’ Girls Dish On ‘The Unit’

‘He’s like Mike times 10 … It’s not attractive,’ Snooki tells MTV News. By Christina Garibaldi “Jersey Shore” stars Snooki, Deena, JWoww, and Sammi Photo: MTV News In the season five premiere, “Jersey Shore” picks up right where it left off, bringing nothing but drama. But this time, it was brought by someone from outside the house: Jonny “The Unit.” During the premiere episode on Thursday, Mike “The Situation” introduces us to his best friend, who wasted no time stirring up tension among Snooki, her boyfriend Jionni and Mike. ” ‘The Unit’ is another part of Mike,” Deena told MTV News. “He’s like Mike’s unit, it’s kind of unreal. He kind of, like, gives Mike more ‘umph’ to be, like, a jerk.” Snooki added, “He’s like Mike times 10, so it’s, like, gross, gross, gross. It’s not attractive.” In the season five kickoff, the housemates immediately go from the cobblestone streets of Florence to the boardwalk of Seaside, New Jersey. To celebrate their big return, the crew is given a surprise homecoming party, which brought out everyone’s friends and family. Yet the celebration quickly turned sour when “The Unit” threatened to tell Snooki’s boyfriend, Jionni, that he witnessed she and “The Situation” hooking up — a story line that was heavily followed during season four in Florence. “I think in Italy it was all drama because we missed home and obviously some people were stirring up unnecessary, fake rumors in the house,” Snooki told MTV News before the premiere. “So when we get back to Jersey, you’re gonna see that pan out more.” It doesn’t seem like we’ve seen the last of “The Unit.” After the two had a heated conversation at the welcome-home party, Snooki offered an apology, which he reluctantly accepted — for now. What did you think of “The Unit?” Let us know in the comments. Don’t miss every Thursday at 10 p.m. ET on MTV. For continuing “Shore” coverage, be sure to check in with MTV’s Remote Control blog.

MTV Kicks Off Election Coverage With ‘Power Of 12’

Andrew Jenks will hit the campaign trail to talk to young voters and GOP hopefuls in the doc ‘Our Voice,’ airing Tuesday at 4:54 p.m. ET/PT on MTV. By James Montgomery Andrew Jenks speaks with young voters in “Power Of 12: Our Voice” Photo: MTV News On Tuesday, MTV will officially launch the Power of 12 , our coverage of the 2012 election, beginning with the premiere of the documentary “Our Voice.” The doc follows filmmaker Andrew Jenks as he crosses the country — and hits the campaign trail — to speak with young voters about the issues that concern them most, and the Republican candidates that are vying for their support. “Our Voice” will debut Tuesday at 4:54 p.m. ET/PT on MTV. And if you think you know everything about the concerns of the nation’s 45 million voters ages 18 to 29 (or the GOP hopefuls currently courting them), well, you’re in for an eye-opener. Because, as the 25-year-old behind MTV’s doc-style series “World of Jenks” told MTV News, he thought he did too. It was only when Jenks hit the road that he discovered how much he didn’t know. Check out a preview of ‘Power of 12: Our Voice’! “You read blogs or you watch the cable news, and you keep hearing that young voters are disenfranchised, that they don’t trust the system or the politicians,” Jenks said. “And sure, there’s a feeling [among young voters] that the rug has been pulled out from underneath them, but at the same time, the thing that I kept hearing when I’d talk to them is, ‘I’m optimistic.’ They’re concerned about the future of the country, but they’re convinced it’s not too late. People my age feel that they have the power to change the system, even if they think it’s broken. “When I first learned I’d be covering the Republican candidates, I was excited because I knew we’d be able to use this as a platform, to look at these candidates and ask, ‘How are you going to speak to us, the young voters?’ ” he continued. “Because for really the first time, we do kind of have the power. We are 45 million people and we can tilt the election. They have to listen to us and speak with us, because we have the leverage.” “Our Voice” — which features interviews with GOP candidates Newt Gingrich, Mitt Romney, Ron Paul and more — is just the first phase of MTV’s Power of 12 campaign, which aims to inform and engage young voters and amplify their voices throughout the 2012 elections. Upcoming specials include “When I Was 22,” an MTV News documentary kicking off in early 2012 that gives viewers a unique look at the lives of presidential hopefuls. Candidates will look back on their own lives — back when they were 22 years old. Each episode will paint a portrait of the candidate at a younger age, focusing on their dreams, triumphs, setbacks and the moments of resiliency that ultimately shaped their world view. Additionally, “Fantasy Election ’12,” an online game similar to fantasy baseball and football fantasy league games, that allows users to draft a team of candidates pursuing the White House, Senate and House of Representatives and rack up points. The first-of-its-kind game also rewards players for getting involved in the electoral process — they’ll get extra points for registering to vote, “checking in” to town halls and debates, and discussing issues with friends. MTV News will begin its coverage of the election on the ground in Iowa and New Hampshire, with Jenks and MTV News correspondent Sway Calloway at the helm. For more on MTV’s election coverage, check out the Power of 12 . And make sure to catch the premiere of “Our Voice” on Tuesday at 4:54 p.m. ET/PT on MTV!
