Michelle’s always ready to stand by her man and help folks understand that Barack’s done more to help boost this economy than many think. The First Lady rose to her husbands defense in a recent interview with DC radio station, WPGC . While the recent presidential debate and the drooping economy has the put President Obama on the defense, First Lady Michelle Obama has hit the trail to make a case for her husband in chief and the recovering economy. “I mean, we are seeing right now that we are in the midst of a huge recovery. Right?” Mrs. Obama told WPGC/Washington DC. ”Because of what this president has done, pulled this economy from the brink of collapse when we were losing 800,000 jobs a month. Now were gaining throughout most of his presidency, we’ve been adding jobs to this economy because of what he’s been doing. The stock market has doubled. Housing prices are rising. Foreclosure rates are lowering. But in the face of that, you still have people trying to convince us that things aren’t better. And that just doesn’t make sense.” The First Lady also acknowledged that there was still a long way to go. “Barack of all people knows that we still have a long way to go to completely rebuild the economy,” she said. “But we’re headed in the right direction. And when you see all of that truth, it’s hard to understand, why are people blocking this? ” Do you think things are getting better? Images via WENN

Michelle Obama Exclusive: “Barack Pulled This Economy From The Brink Of Collapse”
Politicians have long appropriated pop culture to lend their campaigns relevancy and catchy hooks, so it wasn’t unprecedented when Republican nominee Mitt Romney began using the popular Friday Night Lights catchphrase “Clear eyes, full heart, can’t lose” in his bid for the Presidency. That doesn’t mean filmmaker Peter Berg has to be happy about it. In an open letter to Romney, Berg — who directed 2004’s Friday Night Lights , adapted from H.G. Bissinger’s book about a small Texas town obsessed with football, and created its subsequent spin-off television series — slammed the former Governor of Massachusetts for using the now-famous FNL line. “Your politics and campaign are clearly not aligned with the themes we portrayed in our series,” wrote Berg, who described the citation as plagiarism. Via EW : Governor Romney: I created the TV show “Friday Night Lights” and came up with the phrase “Clear Eyes, Full Hearts, Can’t Lose.” I was not thrilled when I saw that you have plagiarized this expression to support your campaign by using it on posters, your facebook page and as part of your stump speeches. Your politics and campaign are clearly not aligned with the themes we portrayed in our series. The only relevant comparison that I see between your campaign and “Friday Night Lights” is in the character of Buddy Garrity — who turned his back on American car manufacturers selling imported cars from Japan. Your use of the expression falsely and inappropriately associates “Friday Night Lights” with the Romney/Ryan campaign. Mitt, we all wish you and your family all the best. We are grateful for your support of our beloved show, but we are not in any way affiliated with you or your campaign. Please come up with your own campaign slogan. Sincerely, Peter Berg. To be fair, President Obama ‘s campaign also used the slogan, albeit less overtly and on Tumblr . I guess that was at least football-related, and therefore more closely aligned with the themes Berg & Co. portrayed in their series. [E W ] Follow Jen Yamato on Twitter . Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney is again trying to distance himself from his infamous “47 percent” comment, calling it “completely wrong.” As opposed to “ineloquently stated,” his original description of the quote. Mitt Romney on Obama Voters Romney, whose comments were caught on video at a private fundraiser in May, says “the words that came out were not what I meant” and disavowed them. His comments implied that 47 percent of voters are government-dependent, self-identified victims who will vote for President Obama no matter what. In an interview with CNN, Romney said he’d work for “100 percent of the people,” adding: “What was stated in the tape was not referring to what kind of president I’d be.” Trying to put the remark in context, he said, “I was talking about how you get 50.1 percent of the vote … I’d like to get 100 percent of the vote, but I figure that’s not going to happen.” “I was trying to tell contributors how I get to 50.1 percent. I think it’s always a perilous course for a candidate to start talking about the mathematics of an election.” Romney dominated the presidential debate last week and has enjoyed a major bump in the polls as a result, with survey composites showing him virtually tied with Obama. If President Obama didn’t exactly dominate Mitt Romney during their debate on Wednesday night, he got a nice subliminal boost courtesy of Steven Spielberg and Daniel Day-Lewis. Following the political wrestling match, Disney ran an extended TV spot for Lincoln that finally justified all of the early Oscar talk the film has generated and and not-so-subtly established Lincoln and Obama as kindred spirits. After a series of emotionally charged scenes that depict Lincoln, played by Day-Lewis, grappling with Civil War (depicted in Saving Private Ryan -style brutality) and the politically unpopular idea of abolishing slavery, the clip closes with the two-time Oscar winner declaring, “I am the President of the United States of America…clothed in immense power!” That rousing movie moment called to mind a slightly less riveting one: President Obama’s speech at the Democratic National Convention in early September in which he said, “Times have changed, and so have I. I’m no longer just a candidate. I’m the President.” The line got plenty of media pick-up and, as the New Yorker reported , evoked a scene from the Aaron Sorkin-scripted 1995 film The American President . In the movie, Michael Douglas, who plays besieged president Andrew Shepherd, addresses attacks from a political challenger by saying: “If you want to talk about character and American values, fine. Just tell me where and when, and I’ll show up. This is a time for serious people….My name is Andrew Shepherd, and I am the President. Sorkin’s line is cool, but the one delivered by Day-Lewis, which was written by Angels in America playwright Tony Kushner carries more force. And I much prefer the idea — purely of my own imagining — that Obama had advance intelligence about the highly anticipated Lincoln movie and script and was able to use it to his political advantage. How’s that for a Left-wing Hollywood conspiracy theory? Take a look at the spot below and tell me what you think. Follow Frank DiGiacomo on Twitter. Follow Movieline on Twitter.
