Exclusive: ‘Batman 3’ Cinematographer Hopes To Shoot ‘Whole Movie In IMAX’

‘I like IMAX more than I like 3-D,’ says Wally Pfister, Christopher Nolan’s director of photography. By Eric Ditzian Christian Bale as Batman in “The Dark Knight” Photo: Warner Bros. Early on in the “Inception” preproduction process, director Christopher Nolan and director of photography Wally Pfister had a conversation that dragged on for weeks: After shooting a portion of “The Dark Knight” in IMAX, would they also shoot their Leonardo DiCaprio-starring thriller in the large-scale film format? “Finally I had to tell Chris that the way he was describing the film, so much of it wanted to be with a handheld camera and kind of running around,” Pfister told MTV News. “That’s just not physically possible with the IMAX camera. We ruled out shooting in IMAX.” Their thinking on how to shoot “Batman 3,” however, might turn out to be vastly different. “I can’t say until I read the script, but it would certainly be my preferred, amazing goal to shoot the whole movie in IMAX,” Pfister said. That sentiment jibes with rumors from last summer that suggested the next “Batman” could indeed be shot all in IMAX . At this point, though, Pfister is waiting to get his hands on the script and to find out when the threequel will shift into production. When it does, he’s hoping to work with IMAX cameras and hoping to avoid 3-D ones. “I must say I’m a huge IMAX fan. I like IMAX more than I like 3-D,” he explained. “Chris’ films are so densely layered and have so much going on visually in every way that IMAX helps enhance that because of the scope and the scale of it — it becomes a much larger canvas to paint on. That’s what we found on ‘Dark Knight.’ “I’m not a big fan of 3-D,” he continued. “I liken it to my View-Master I had 40 years ago. Are you really getting more out of the story with 3-D? When you separate those different planes and you’re creating artificial depth, it looks phony to me.” Nolan hasn’t jumped on the 3-D bandwagon either, saying in June, “I’m not a huge fan of 3-D.” Still, any decisions about how to shoot “Batman 3” will ultimately involve Warner Bros. and will certainly wait until Nolan and Pfister sit down and have a discussion similar to the one they had in the run-up to “Inception.” “We usually have lunch and he asks me, ‘Tell me what your thoughts are,’ ” Pfister said. “It’s very casual. It’s not very technical. And then we start to build toward, ‘How are we going to shoot this? Where are we going to shoot this?’ My preproduction is about four months long before principal photography begins. “I can’t imagine how we’re going to step it up [after ‘Inception’],” he added. “But we will.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Inception.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com . Bozell Column: Kagan’s Comedy Is News?

The shallow and promotional TV coverage of Elena Kagan’s confirmation hearings illustrated once again how the shamelessly ABC, CBS, and NBC shape the political Play-Doh they offer to the American people as “news.” First, there was the amount of coverage.Let’s put it this way: “coverage” is the wrong word. Entire days of hearings, filled with tough exchanges with Republicans on issues like the military, “gay marriage,” and abortion were swept under the rug. Instead, the one talking point every viewer was supposed to remember was this: Kagan is funny! She is really, really funny! At one point in the hearings, they discussed the Obama administration’s very unfunny failure to stop the Christmas Day bomber from almost blowing up a plane as it landed in Detroit. That somehow turned into a joke about Kagan’s Jewishness. Sen. Lindsey Graham, who has seemed desperate to ingratiate himself with Obama’s nominees, set Kagan up to joke that she probably spent Christmas at a Chinese restaurant. If Kagan were trying out for the TV show “Last Comic Standing,” that would seem like a very stale old joke. But the networks were looking for anything in these hearings that (a) wouldn’t bore their dumbest viewer and (b) made Kagan look good. So The Joke was the top story. The fawning was out of control. The networks audaciously boasted that Kagan was so funny that “Saturday Night Live” could not do her justice. On ABC’s “Good Morning America” on June 30, news anchor Juju Chang hailed Kagan’s “lively sense of humor” and then asked co-hosts George Stephanopoulos and Elizabeth Vargas “Who is going to play her in the SNL skit?” Vargas replied: “I don’t think they could be as funny as Elena Kagan was!” On July 2, CBS’s “The Early Show” was still touting the comedy gold. Co-host Harry Smith noted “She was downright funny.” Ana Marie Cox, a former Air America radio host and writer for GQ magazine, called it “a Saturday Night Live skit made live,” whatever that means. She thought it was made more perfect that former SNL writer and Sen. Al Franken is on the Judiciary Committee. Liberal radio host Jane Pratt completed the support circle: “Her joke was good, the Chinese food joke was good.” But, they had no interest in substance that might underline just how radical Kagan’s positions might be. The networks almost completely ignored Kagan’s key role in the Clinton White House efforts to promote the monstrous act of partial-birth abortion. CNSNews.com reported that in 1996, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) sent the Clinton White House a proposed draft statement on partial-birth abortion that declared a panel they convened “could identify no circumstances” under which this skull-puncturing and skull-vacuuming procedure would be “the only option” to save a woman’s life or preserve her health.” On December 13, 1996, Kagan wrote this language would be a “disaster” if released publicly, since it clearly contradicted what President Clinton had claimed. Kagan wrote to ACOG’s associate director of government relations with suggested prose the medical group could use. Partial-birth abortion, she claimed “may be the best or most appropriate procedure in a particular circumstance to save the life or preserve the health of a woman.” Weeks later, ACOG’s public statement carried those exact words from the White House. Three years later, Justice Stephen Breyer repeated those same words in declaring Nebraska’s partial-birth abortion ban unconstitutional. Douglas Johnson of the National Right to Life Committee said that armed with these documents, “it appears that Kagan was perhaps the key strategist in blocking enactment of the partial-birth abortion ban act.” He believes that Kagan had “her hands on this from the beginning to the end.”A scandal?  A controversy? A story ?Only CBS legal reporter Jan Crawford came anywhere close on the “CBS Evening News.” She played a snippet of Sen. Orrin Hatch pressing Kagan to admit the notes to ACOG were in her handwriting, but the CBS viewer saw just seconds of this exchange with zero context what these two people were discussing — other than the generic topic of abortion. The grisly specifics were omitted. This example only underlines how anyone who wants to follow weighty issues of public policy, including Supreme Court jurisprudence, should never rely on network television. These networks gave much more time and loving care to England’s Prince Harry falling off a horse on a visit to New York. That is the intellectual depth the public should expect from the airheaded TV “news” elite — at least when Democrats are the ones changing the Supreme Court for the next two or three decades.

Big Boi Proves He’s A ‘Master’ On Solo Debut Sir Lucious Left Foot

Long-awaited album, featuring T.I., Gucci Mane, YelaWolf and others, due out this week. By Jayson Rodriguez Big Boi Photo: MTV News Big Boi is a staunch defender of the Outkast legacy, but the slick Atlanta MC is also quick to clarify his own stature within the confines of the partnership. “Outkast is a supergroup,” he told MTV News on Tuesday (July 6), stressing that even when the duo aren’t together, they’re equally capable of delivering quality music. And right now, Big Boi is basking in the critical acclaim of his long-in-the-works proper solo debut , Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty. The project, which was originally slated to be released on Jive Records two years ago, is coming out this week on Def Jam Records. “It’s basically the same album. I could have been done, like, a year ago,” Big Boi said. “But being that we were having creative differences — you know, every time they rejected what I was doing, I would go back in the studio and work on more stuff. The last two songs, ‘You Ain’t No DJ’ and ‘Be Still,’ were the last two records, but everything else was already on there.” For Sir Lucious Left Foot, Big Boi assembled a ragtag collection of artists, from established talents like T.I. and Gucci Mane to upstarts YelaWolf and his own artist Janelle Monae. The result, however, is a cohesive collection that hinges on the Outkast sound but is still wily enough to venture into new terrain, as evidenced on the slinky track “Shutterbugg.” Big Boi said the set showcases his talent, which he feels is at its peak at the moment thanks to his solo effort. “It’s good. I started off 16 years old, I’m 35 now, I’m in my prime,” he said. “The whole Sir Lucious Left Foot thing, the simple way I can put it is like when Luke Skywalker became a Jedi. So I’m a master of my craft. As a producer and MC, I take the craft very seriously. We might be lurking in the shadows for a minute, but when we lurking we working.” Related Artists Big Boi

‘The Last Airbender’: An Inside Look At Five Cool Powers And Weapons

Visual-effects supervisor and set decorator lead MTV News through the film’s biggest spectacles. By Eric Ditzian Shaun Toub in “The Last Airbender” Photo: Paramount Pictures Last summer, MTV News took a trip inside M. Night Shyamalan’s mad-scientist brain when we visited the Philadelphia set of “The Last Airbender.” The hyperkinetic director was in the midst of bringing “Airbender” out from the animated small screen and into real life, and the results were big, big, big — sets twice the size of football fields, massive green screens, hundreds of extras in elaborate costumes and a production budget two and a half times the size of any of his other movies. “I’m scared to death,” he admitted back then. Yet, at the same time, Shyamalan knew exactly what he was doing. Now the results of that focused anxiety have arrived in theaters. Set in an imaginary world in which various tribes can control the elements of the planet, the film follows the century-long war that the Fire nation has been waging against other nations until a young boy named Aang (Noah Ringer) discovers he is the only person capable of controlling all four elements and bringing about peace. As the tribes go at one another, the audience gets to sit back and take in all manner of badass weaponry and cool, CGI-assisted powers. Visual-effects supervisor Pablo Helman (“War of the Worlds”) and set decorator Larry Dias (“Transformers”) walked MTV News through the creation of these various features to give us the inside scoop about five cool weapons and powers. Manipulating Fire The Fire nation is one committed to ceaseless warfare. Their weapon of choice, obviously, is all manner of wicked flames — flung in various ways at the enemy to cause maximum damage. It’s fantastical stuff, no doubt, but Shyamalan wanted that computer-generated power to be grounded in reality. Helman’s source of inspiration? The annual Burning Man festival in Nevada. “Night wanted something that no one had seen before,” Helman said. “And he wanted the fire to look different every time it was used. At Burning Man, they’ve got a bonfire there, and they put a bunch of fans around it so the fire looks like a tornado fire. That was the main inspiration. We showed it to Night and said it’s a cool look, and he loved it.” Manipulating Water The Water nation, meanwhile, is a more peaceful tribe — until they’re challenged by the Fire folks and have to fight back. Their ability is controlling water and using it every conceivable way to eliminate the aggressor. Helman looked to the U.S. space agency to come up with something that would work for computer animation. “We looked at NASA footage. They did some experiments with liquid water in zero gravity,” Helman said. “If you look at the water in zero gravity, it behaves in a specific way. It stays together, it forms balls, and there’s all this interesting stuff that happens inside the balls of water. That’s what we showed Night, and he loved it. So we had to come up with a piece of software that allowed us to manipulate water in the same way.” Fire Balls The Fire nation doesn’t just hurl fire. They also build huge, spiky metal spheres that they launch from their warships. Think of them like the scariest, flame-assisted catapults you’ve ever seen. “The Fire nation is the only one of the nations that has industrialized, and we needed to create something that would work for them,” Dias explained. “So for the military ships, we manufactured these giant orbs — basically a metal framework that would have fire put in digitally. They have huge spikes, they’re flaming, they’re intense. They inflict a lot of damage.” Zuko’s Double Swords “Airbender” features a slew of weapons, from Aang’s powerful staff to the various swords of the warring tribes. But ask star Dev Patel what his favorite weapon in the movie is, and of course he’s going to choose one that his character — the Fire nation’s Prince Zuko — gets to wield in a seriously badass fashion. Too bad Patel himself didn’t actually get to swing those double swords. “I actually didn’t use the two broad swords,” Patel told MTV News. “Most of the other action I did. With two big, sharp swords in my hand, they had an amazing stunt guy called Stephen Oyoung, and he is brilliant with these two swords. He deserves lots of credit.” Fire Braziers Here’s the thing about the Fire nation: While they maintain a mighty army capable of manipulating fire, they can’t create enough fire themselves to rein terror on their enemies. Instead, they have to cart around huge fire carriers that give them the raw material. “We built these big fire baskets called braziers that are really ornate,” Dias said. “We built them in different sizes. They have these poles that are decorated with spearheads, and four soldiers carry them. The Fire nation can’t go to war without them.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Last Airbender.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com . Big Boi Gets ‘Live And Down To Earth’ In ‘Follow Us’ Video

‘It’s like a college frat party down in Savannah,’ MC says of clip for second Sir Luscious Left Foot single. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Kelly Marino Big Boi Photo: MTV News Next week, Big Boi is set to release the video for “Follow Us,” featuring Vonnegutt, the Atlanta MC told MTV News on the red carpet of the 2010 BET Awards. He’s already shot the clip, which is scheduled to premiere the visuals in time for the release of his album, Sir Luscious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty, next Tuesday (July 6). “Left foot, right foot, stepping over biters,” he raps over the track’s syncopated drums. “The game seems haunted/ ‘Cause there’s so many ghost writers.” “It’s just live and down to earth,” Big Boi said of the “Follow Us” video. “It’s like a college frat party down in Savannah, Georgia. Just riding through the city, having fun.” The number follows Big Boi’s current single, the Scott Storch-produced “Shutterbugg.” Sir Luscious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty is the OutKast rapper’s first proper solo offering; he and rhyme partner Andre 3000 released solo projects bundled into an group album with Speakerboxx/ The Love Below. Now, Big Boi isn’t entirely on his own: He’s got the help of T.I., B.o.B and Jamie Foxx on the LP. Andre 3000 was slated to have a prominent role on the project, particularly on the songs “Royal Flush” and “Lookin’ for Ya,” but OutKast’s label, Jive, blocked Dre from appearing on the Def Jam release. “Jive Records is trying to block 3 Stacks from being on the album. Boi Stop!!!!” Big Boi tweeted earlier this month. Big Boi spoke to MTV News in April about “Lookin’ for Ya,” which was produced by Boi-1da. “It’s me and Stacks, two verses apiece, back-to-back lyrical manslaughter,” Big Boi said of the collaboration. “Who’s better than the ‘Kast? Nobody.” Are you looking forward to more of Big Boi’s solo work? Would you rather OutKast got to work on new music together? Sound off in the comments. Related Artists Big Boi

‘Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows’ Trailer: Six Key Moments

We break down the best parts of the new sneak peek. By Terri Schwartz Bonnie Wright and Daniel Radcliffe in “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” Photo: Warner Bros. The first full-length “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” trailer comes at the perfect time to remind everyone why they loved the story about the boy with a lightning-bolt scar to begin with — and to ask everyone else who didn’t what they were possibly thinking. While previous trailers for “Harry Potter” movies — even the especially dark “Half-Blood Prince” — mixed humor with the action and magic, this sneak peek shows that the “Deathly Hallows” films, like the book, will take themselves very seriously. There’s a lot packed into the two-minute teaser, as well as some hints as to when the split between the two films will lie, so we’re going to break down some of the best parts. The Attack at the Ministry There are only two quick shots of the Ministry battle, but they promise greatness from that scene. At 1:24, there is a shot of Ron (Rupert Grint) running away terrified, and then at 1:46, there is another shot of the Ministry employee who is pursuing him. Godric’s Hollow Another section of “Part 1” that made it to the trailer is Harry (Daniel Radcliffe) and Hermione’s (Emma Watson) journey to the home of Harry’s parents, Godric’s Hollow. Their entrance can be seen at the one-minute mark, and even though it looks like only Hermione is walking, that is because Harry is under the invisibility cloak. There is a lot more to the location than meets the eye, though, and you can see Harry being attacked by Voldemort’s snake Nagini inside Bathilda Bagshot’s home at 1:47. Ron Destroying the Slytherin Necklace Horcrux In the scene that has long been assumed will close out “Part 1,” Ron reunites with Harry in the woods and helps him destroy one of Voldemort’s Horcruxes. At 1:17, Ron can be seen looking terrified of the images the Horcrux is showing them (some pretty scandalous scenes between Harry and Hermione), and then at 1:48, Harry can be seen encouraging Ron to “kill it!” The Gringott’s Break-In Switching to moments that will (presumably) occur in “Part 2,” it might seem a bit confusing to see Harry riding alongside his enemy Bellatrix Lestrange (Helena Bonham Carter) with a goblin named Griphook (Warwick Davis) at :54, but that’s actually because Hermione is impersonating Bellatrix, a scene Carter said she enjoyed playing . The shot of a half-blind dragon at 1:16 also comes from the Gringott’s scene, and the dragon flying away from the wizarding bank at 1:39 is the trio’s escape route to safety. Harry’s First Confrontation With Voldemort It was an interesting move to open up the trailer with one of the final scenes in “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2,” but the shots of Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes) standing with his Death Eaters in the woods and Harry approaching them actually come toward the end of the story. “Harry Potter, the Boy Who Lived, come to die!” Voldemort announces dramatically in the trailer, before seemingly casting the killing curse — Avada Kedavra — on Harry. The Final Battle A good portion of the action scenes that are shown in the trailer are taken from the final battle sequence that will take place at the end of “Part 2.” USA Today reported that the battle was expanded for the film, which means those shots of people running at each other in the woods are probably from the creative mind of director David Yates. But the wand confrontation between Harry and Voldemort at 1:59 is right out of the book, and Voldemort’s final line of the trailer — “Only I can live forever” — is a daunting way of teasing the final installments of the “Harry Potter” franchise. What did we miss? Share your favorite parts of the trailer in the comments below!
