Natalie Portman, Mila Kunis Talk Starving, Bonding For ‘Black Swan’

‘Suddenly we were on set together in tutus, emaciated and tired,’ Portman recalls of commiserating with co-star. By Eric Ditzian Natalie Portman Photo: Michael Loccisano/ Getty Images Much has been made of the sweaty sex scene in “Black Swan” between Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis , two longtime friends who had to strip down for some bumping-and-grinding in the name of art. But let’s be clear about one thing: It can hardly be said that the friends spent the entire shoot in lesbian-love mode (the aforementioned scene was filmed in just one day). Rather, Portman and Kunis spent the majority of the production engaging in bonding of another kind: commiserating about how freaking hungry they were, as both women had to shed weight to play world-class ballerinas. “Mila and I had had ‘sweatpants nights’ watching ‘Top Chef,’ and suddenly we were on set together in tutus, emaciated and tired,” Portman told MTV News at the “Black Swan” red-carpet premiere on Tuesday night. So much for the glamorous life of a Hollywood actress. The process of losing the weight, which included a restrictive diet and hard-core dance training, took months — both before and during the shoot. As Kunis put it, “It was months and months and I was always hungry.” But the friends got through it together, and afterward they gorged. “The second they were like, ‘You can eat now,’ I ate everything in two minutes,” Kunis said, adding that her first post-“Black Swan” meal took place at an airport food court. “Panda Express at JFK. I’m a classy broad.” As physically demanding as the movie was, Portman told us that it brought the two of them closer. “It’s interesting always to see someone working who you only know socially,” she said. “It’s great to see someone do so beautifully in a work context after you know they’re just a fun, cool person.” Will you see “Black Swan” when it opens? Soulja Boy Tell’em ‘Got Back On My Production’ For DeAndre Way

‘Pretty Boy Swag’ MC returns to “Rapfix Live” this Thursday. By Steven Roberts Soulja Boy Tell’em Photo: MTV News Arguable one of the most polarizing figures in current hip-hop, Soulja Boy Tell’em has both die-hard fans and his share of critics who like to point out his preference for party over substance in his music. But the “Pretty Boy Swag” MC promises that his third studio album, The DeAndre Way, out on Tuesday (November 30), will show how much he has learned over the years, possibly pleasing fans and haters alike. “I’ve just been watching a lot of rappers, learning, taking notes,” Soulja told MTV News on the video set for the album’s third single, “Speaker Going Hammer.” “I’ve really been in the studio working on my production as producer, because I was rapping and jumping on so many different songs that I forgot that I produced the #1 song in the world. I really just sat and got back on my production. I worked on my lyrics and really I just made a good album, and I’m ready for my fans to hear it.” And if you want him to explain more about how his music has matured, you can ask him yourself this Thursday, when he makes his second appearance on MTV News’ “RapFix Live.” One artist who has helped Soulja evolve was his “Mean Mug” collaborator 50 Cent . Both were featured on the November cover of XXL, where they expressed their mutual admiration for each other. Soulja Boy said they faced common adversities, and 50 said if he could be any other artist it would be Soulja. On his video set, Soulja also talked about why he loves the opportunity to sit back, listen and learn from Fif. “When I talk to dudes like 50 Cent, when we working on songs or other business outside of the music industry, there’s always things that you can learn,” he told MTV News. “You always think that you know it all, but you don’t. When I’m around 50, he just likes to ramble. He can go on and talk. He can talk and talk and talk. And it’s so good for me, because I just listen and I soak it all up. And I take it and I put my own twist on it.” Soulja’s “Rapfix Live” interview will stream live online at 4 p.m. on Thursday. ‘Deathly Hallows’ Designer Reveals Scene Secrets

‘Harry Potter’ production designer Stuart Craig talks to MTV News about helping Harry retrieve Sword of Gryffindor from a frozen lake. By Kara Warner Daniel Radcliffe in “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1” Photo: Warner Bros. In the weeks leading up to the release of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1,” fans were in a frenzy, trying to figure out just how much of the book would make the first film, which scenes would delight and disappoint, and what characters might not return ever again. And trying to get the tight-lipped folks in the Potter camp to discuss those key points was a bit of a struggle. However, now that the film has opened, MTV News has enlisted the expertise of longtime Potter production designer Stuart Craig for a few behind-the-scenes tidbits. Much has been said of the production moving away from Hogwarts and out on multiple locations, which Craig described as a “movie on the run.” “We made a very different kind of film, which was shot a great deal on location. We traveled quite far, we built sets, and they spend a lot of time in a forest,” he explained. “We built forest sets and integrated them into the real forests, so there were challenges there, as you might imagine.” Another one of the production’s major challenges — and accomplishments — was shooting the sequence in which Harry retrieves the Sword of Gryffindor at the bottom of a frozen lake. “There was a really demanding, complicated special-effects requirement there to do the ice,” Craig said. “I think that all works remarkably quite well, actually. Harry breaking the ice, diving in and then subsequently strangled by the Horcrux around his neck and is struggling and can’t get up quickly because of the ice above him. It’s good stuff.” Which begs the question: How did Craig and his team pull off that scene, and what do they use to make the ice look so real? “As always, well, as nearly always, there’s more than one solution. The camera on top, looking from the outside down on it. It’s big, thick sheets of Plexiglass with frosty texture on top of that,” he revealed. “When we’re underneath, it’s actually an area of wax which floats on top of the water. And wax makes very effective ice. They’re tried and tested movie techniques; there are a lot. You could write a book one day, a guidebook, to the very movie techniques — frost on window panes with some Epsom salts and brown nails.” One of the great pleasures in chatting with Craig, whose credits outside the world of Harry Potter include “Ghandi,” “The English Patient” and “Notting Hill,” is the fact that he has such an informed perspective on the inner-workings of the industry; specifically, how advanced film-making technology is now. “The great thing about movies these days is that you can fix everything,” he said. “I have to give a talk at a film festival early next month, and I’ve just been looking at films that I’ve done in the past. In particular, ‘Ghandi,’ years ago in India. The thing then was: If sometimes there was a compromise, it was filmed and it was there, locked. Forever. You look at the movie 20 years later, and there it would be. “These days, with visual effects able to do so much, you can do face replacement, you can put Dan Radcliffe’s head on somebody else’s body. There’s nothing they can’t do, it seems. I mean, at a cost, it’s not cheap, so terrible things seem to get fixed, which is very reassuring,” he added, chuckling. Congress Again Bans Crush Videos

If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again. Congress has heeded this advice, and voted to ban so-called crush videos, which depict animal cruelty, often with women killing small animals to satisfy some strange urge of the viewer. More specifically, the ban applies to the selling or distribution of crush videos, not to their production. It’s heading to President Barack Obama for his signature…. Lindsay Lohan Dropped From ‘Inferno’

Director says he will replace troubled actress in Linda Lovelace biopic. By Mawuse Ziegbe Lindsay Lohan on set of “Inferno” Photo: TylerShields.com Lindsay Lohan is officially too hot for “Inferno.” The film’s director, Matthew Wilder, told E! News that after months of standing by the troubled starlet, he has decided to drop Lohan from the project. “We are withdrawing our offer from Lindsay Lohan,” he said. “We are currently in negotiations [with another actress] and working out the legalities of bringing her onboard.” The director explained that the inability to insure Lohan played a factor in the decision to continue the production without the embattled actress. “We have stuck by Lindsay very patiently for a long time with a lot of love and support,” Wilder said. “Ultimately, the impossibility of insuring her — and some other issues — have made it impossible for us to go forward.” Lohan’s replacement is expected to be announced on Monday. Although Wilder has publicly supported Lohan through her legal drama and substance abuse issues, and maintained he will strive to accommodate the actress, the director recently hinted that the production may have to ditch the star. “You know we have been through a lot with this project, and although she is still our number one choice — we do have a Plan B if she cannot film ‘Inferno,’ ” Wilder told Radar Online . The director also added that he had been communicating with other actresses who were interested in the role. Questions about whether the starlet could complete the movie have dogged the project throughout Lohan’s eventful year, which has included two prison bids for violating her probation. Filming was set to begin in November but Lohan was ordered to remain in rehab until January . While Wilder has previously admitted his frustration with the actress’ situation, he has also maintained that Lohan’s talent was worth sticking by the star. “I understand people’s exasperation,” he told MTV News in September . “I share it. But there is a tremendous gift underneath all the obvious baggage.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com. Zach Galifianakis Talks ‘It’s Kind Of A Funny Story’ Directing Duo

‘I think they have the same amount of influence,’ he says of Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Zach Galifianakis Photo: MTV News Zach Galifianakis is following up his star-making and outrageous role in last year’s “The Hangover” with a slightly more subdued turn in “It’s Kind of a Funny Story,” the latest film from “Half Nelson” writer/director team Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden. In the film, which is based on the 2006 semiautobiographical novel by Ned Vizzini, Galifianakis plays Bobby, a patient in the psych ward of the Brooklyn Argenon Hospital, who becomes a mentor of sorts to Craig Gilner (Keir Gilchrist), a potentially suicidal 16-year-old who checks himself into the hospital. When we caught up with Galifianakis recently, we asked him how having two directors changed the filmmaking process and if he had any questions for the directing duo before he signed onto the project. “I had a few questions. One of them was: ‘When are the lunch breaks?’ ‘How long are the lunch breaks?’ and ‘Is this a Pixar film?’ Because those are my three rules,” he joked. “No, the script was good, I really liked the directors, and that’s kind of what I based it on.” Regarding Fleck and Boden’s directing style, Galifianakis said the duo were very organized yet laid-back at the same time. “Ryan does most of the talking, and Anna is in the background a little bit,” he explained. “But equally, I think they have the same amount of influence, but they’re very, very good directors. They’re soft-spoken and nice. It was a pleasure working with them.” “It’s Kind of a Funny Story” opens in New York and Los Angeles on October 8 and also features Viola Davis, Lauren Graham and up-and-comer Emma Roberts. Shia LaBeouf Sees ‘Positives And Negatives’ To ‘Transformers’ Re-Casting

Megan Fox replacement Rosie Huntington-Whiteley is a ‘new set of eyes,’ actor says. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Shia LaBeouf Photo: MTV News “Strange” is how Megan Fox describes the way she’ll probably be feeling when she hunkers down into her seat to take in Shia LaBeouf and “Transformers 3” next summer. The 24-year-old actress was ousted from the production in a stunning turn of events in May, only to be replaced by Victoria’s Secret model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley . And while Fox told MTV News that she “might be a little jealous when I see somebody kissing my Shia,” LaBeouf acknowledged that there are both upsides and downsides to smooching with another actress while alien robots battle around them. “I think there’s positives and negatives to her not being [in the movie],” said LaBeouf, who was at the Toronto Film Festival to promote “Wall Street 2.” “It’s awesome that we get the discovery again. I think when everybody’s vetted and everybody’s been through these wars, then that discovery of the first film is nonexistent. It’s kind of beautiful in that we get a new set of eyes, a fresh set of eyes for the audience to vibe with. So you get the discovery again, which is something that wouldn’t happen if Megan came back.” Yet he still counts Fox as a good friend, and praised her turns in the first two “Transformers” flicks. As for Huntington-Whiteley , who will make her acting debut in the new film, LaBeouf said she’s “doing great,” though there’s little he could do to prepare her for the experience of working with the famously fiery director, Michael Bay. “You can only do so much,” he laughed. “Fight or flight. A tap on the back and a ‘Good luck!’ ” Check out everything we’ve got on “Transformers 3.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .
