Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark Loses Lead Actress Natalie Mendoza

And for once it wasn’t due to injury! Natalie Mendoza — who plays the villainous Arachne in the Julie Taymor musical — is leaving Turn Off the Dark , two people who work on the show told New York Times . You’ll recall that Mendoza suffered a concussion during the first performance of Turn Off the Dark last month, and that she was very vocal following the injury to actor Christopher Tierney. “Please pray with me for my friend Chris, my superhero who quietly inspires me everyday with his spirit,” she wrote on Twitter after Tierney fell during the Dec. 20 performance. “A light in my heart went dim tonight.” Mendoza hasn’t appeared on stage since that incident. Stephen Dorff Describes ‘Immortals’ As ‘ ‘300’ Meets ‘Gladiator’ ‘

‘I could end up having horns coming out of my head, and wings,’ Dorff joked about the final product. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Stephen Dorff Photo: MTV News For those anxious to see more of Stephen Dorff after his critically acclaimed role in Sofia Coppola’s “Somewhere,” you won’t have to wait too long to see him back on the big screen. Dorff’s next film is the buzzworthy “Immortals,” directed by visionary filmmaker Tarsem Singh (“The Fall,” “The Cell”), which also stars Mickey Rourke, Kellan Lutz, Henry Cavill and Freida Pinto. When MTV News caught up with Dorff recently, we asked him for his take on the film. “So much of that movie is going to be done in post [production],” he said, adding that he has no idea what it will look like when it’s finished. “I could end up having horns coming out of my head, and wings,” Dorff joked. “I don’t know what’s going to happen.” The veteran actor described “Immortals” as ” ‘300’-meets-‘Gladiator.’ ” “[There’s] a lot of testosterone,” he said. “A beautiful girl, Freida Pinto, brings the innocence and femininity to the movie and she’s really great. I found her great to work with.” With regard to his onscreen action with Rourke, who plays the villainous King Hyperion, Dorff said that again, due to the amount of visual effects that will need to be added to the film, he’s unsure of what the final product will look like. “Mickey kinda is in this mask for most of the movie, so I don’t know how it’s going to be in the final cut, but he looked great. I had most of my [scenes] with Freida and this other character [Theseus, played by Henry Cavill]. John Hurt is in it as well.” Dorff went on to say that he is sure the film will be great, but that the larger scope of the production was a big change from the intimate environment he worked in on “Somewhere.” “Whenever you do something that big — especially coming from ‘Somewhere’ — I always get a little nervous,” Dorff admitted. “But I have to keep moving until Sophia does another movie, or another filmmaker I’d love to work with does another movie. … I have to hopefully pick the right things. I’m trying to be careful with what I do next,” he said. Check out everything we’ve got on “Somewhere.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

‘Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark’ To Resume Performances After Injury

Following fourth injury, the Broadway musical is canceling only its Wednesday matinee. By Terri Schwartz “Spiderman: Turn Off the Dark” Photo: Marvel After a fourth person was injured during the Broadway preview run of “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark,” the Wednesday matinee show has been postponed, but all subsequent shows will proceed as scheduled, a spokesperson for the production told MTV News. Stunt double and aerialist Christopher Tierney, 31, was hurt on Monday during the final moments of a preview performance. The cable he was attached to snapped, and he fell approximately 8 to 10 feet. He was taken to New York’s Bellevue Hospital with multiple broken ribs and substantial bleeding, BroadwayWorld.com reported. He is being held in serious but stable condition. Rick Miramontez, the spokesperson for the $65 million musical, told MTV News that representatives from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, Actors Equity and New York State Department of Labor met with the “Spider-man” company on Tuesday (December 21) to discuss additional safety protocols to prevent more injuries. “It was agreed that these measures would be enacted immediately,” he said. That agreement prevented the show from being delayed anymore than it already has been. Producers for “Turn Off the Dark” recently announced the opening of the musical would be delayed from January 11 to February 7. Previous injuries on the set included actress Natalie Mendoze being hit on the head with a rope and suffering a concussion. The musical, a creative brainchild of “Across the Universe” director Julie Taymor and U2 band members Bono and The Edge, involves telling the story of Spider-man in a musical fashion and incorporates acrobatics and cable work so the actors can fly across the stage like Spidey with his web. The Edge explained to MTV News last month that “it’s elements of rock and roll, it’s elements of circus, it’s elements of opera, of musical theater. It is so many different things, and when we started the process, we promised we’d do something that hasn’t been done before. And really, we, I think, have managed to do that.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark.

Spider-Man Injury Update: Safety Inspectors Plan to Visit Production

If Broadway had an NFL -like injury report, Julie Taymor’s production of Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark would be listed as “questionable.” In the wake of Monday night’s latest injury — when a stunt performer fell nearly ten feet into a pit beneath the stage — safety inspectors with the New York State Department of Labor will pay a visit to the production. “We’ll be talking to the production team, checking the harnesses, cables, and other equipment, and trying to determine what happened, and we’ll have more information after that,” said a department spokesman to the Times . US sues BP over oil disaster

The US is suing BP and eight other firms for allegedly violating federal safety regulations in connection with the Gulf of Mexico oil spill. The lawsuit asks that they be held liable without limitation for all clean-up and damage costs. The Deepwater Horizon drilling rig explosion in April killed 11 workers and spilled millions of barrels of oil over several months. The oil leak became the worst environmental disaster in US history. The lawsuit charges the companies under the US Clean Water Act and Oil Pollution Act. US Attorney General Eric Holder said the complaint alleges that “violations of safety and operational regulations” caused the 20 April explosion. The companies targeted in the lawsuit are BP Exploration and Production Inc, Anadarko Exploration & Production LP, Anadarko Petroleum Corporation, MOEX Offshore 2007 LLC, Triton Asset Leasing GMBH, Transocean Holdings LLC, Transocean Offshore Deepwater Drilling Inc, Transocean Deepwater Inc and QBE Underwriting Ltd/Lloyd's Syndicate 1036 – BP's insurer. The key accusations are: * Failing to take necessary precautions to keep the Macondo Well under control in the period leading up to the April 20th explosion * Failing to use the best available and safest drilling technology to monitor the well's conditions * Failing to maintain continuous surveillance * Failing to use and maintain equipment and material that were available and necessary to ensure the safety and protection of personnel, equipment, natural resources, and the environment Halliburton, the company that cemented the Macondo Well, and Cameron International, which provided equipment for the well, were not targeted in the lawsuit. But the Justice Department said on Wednesday that the investigation into the oil spill was ongoing and more defendants and charges could be added to the suit. “We intend to prove that these defendants are responsible for government removal costs, economic losses and environmental damages without limitation,” Mr Holder said. “As investigations continue, we will not hesitate to take whatever steps necessary to hold accountable those responsible for this spill,” Mr Holder added. Mr Holder did not specify a timetable in the lawsuit, instead saying the US would move as quickly as possible in the matter. Eleven workers on the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig were killed by an explosion which followed, and hundreds of miles of coast were polluted before it was stemmed in July. added by: Jake_Leonard

Narnia Studio Chief: If Dawn Treader Fails, Franchise is Dead

Success is subjective in Hollywood, especially with franchises. But with his Chronicles of Narnia franchise on now on its second distributor in three films, Walden Media president Michael Flaherty confessed he’s all in with this weekend’s Voyage of the Dawn Treader . At least he’s got a sense of humor about it: “There have been a number of cheesy nautical references throughout the production of VDT, but we truly are sunk in making any more films from the Chronicles if this one falls short of expectations.” Also: No , Aslan isn’t a Buddha or Mohammed figure . As you were. [ Big Hollywood ]
