2010 VMAs: Top Five Moments You Never Saw!

The telecast delivered great comebacks and wacky costumes, but plenty of action never made it to air. By Nuzhat Naoreen Mary J. Blige and Drake perform during the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty From meat dresses to all-star performances, the 2010 VMAs had no shortage of memorable moments, so it’s no surprise that people are still talking about it. The awards show drew nearly 11.4 million viewers (no big deal, just the biggest audience for any MTV telecast since 2002). Althought you’ve probably seen many of the pictures, videos and even the blink-and-you-missed-’em moments , there’s actually a lot more awesomeness that happened offcamera. Check out the five best unseen moments from the 2010 VMAs: Drake, Mary J. And Swizz Beatz Nail It While Drake, Swizz Beatz and Mary J. Blige delivered a flawless performance of “Fancy” at the 2010 VMAs, they actually only rehearsed it once. “Mary J. was not in L.A. earlier in the week because of prior commitments, so Swizz and Drake rehearsed with a stand-in,” said Kim Reynolds, executive assistant to VMA Executive Producer Dave Sirulnick. While the trio’s hectic schedules kept them apart initially, Mary made it a point to get there for dress rehearsal and the trio was able to practice at least once before the show — but that was the first and only time. Fortunately, the legendary Mary J. had no trouble nailing the performance along with Drake and Swizz. “Even with only one rehearsal the performance was amazing,” Reynolds remarked. 30 Seconds To Mars Discover Glitter Hurts The glitter dispersed by the bikers accompanying 30 Seconds to Mars on their VMA entrance did more than leave a stain on the carpet, some of it actually got into Jared Leto’s brother Shannon’s eye and the paramedics had to be called. VMA audience member Kenny Mellman saw it all go down an hour before the show. “The door to the restroom was being held open and I saw a bunch of people around the sinks,” Mellman explained. “At first I thought that it was a celebrity getting ready and that they had taken over the bathroom, until I saw two paramedics assisting.” Mellman soon realized the medics were helping to remove glitter from Shannon Leto’s eye. “I overheard Jared Leto saying something to the effect of they didn’t know the glitter was going to hurt, but it is the worst thing to get in your eyes.” Will.I.Am Gets A Lift From A Toaster? Will.I.Am’s surprise appearance during Nicki Minaj’s pre-show performance actually had a little more “pop” to it than what cameras caught. MTV News had a “toaster” — a hydraulic lift used to catapult people — ready to go backstage for Will. The lift would make it appear as if Will, who was hidden behind a trapdoor, magically appeared on the stage. “You could compare it to a trampoline that doesn’t require you to jump on it to give you height,” said Adam Stewart, the production manager responsible for overseeing the building of the entire red carpet stage. While the toaster worked perfectly, it wasn’t in the live show. Cyclists Crash White Carpet — Twice! By now, you’ve probably already heard about 30 Seconds to Mars’ epic VMA entrance. The guys arrived at the carpet with a crew of bicyclists, who unexpectedly threw feathers, water and glitter into the crowd. A cleaning crew was dispatched to clean up the mess afterward … but that wasn’t the end of it. The bicyclists actually crashed the red carpet again. “I’m walking up to go to the entrance of the limo route, and right around the corner comes one bike, comes two three more,” Production Coordinator Damian Vaca recalled. “They just crash the red carpet again. They’re weaving in and out of limos in and out of people. They completely took over the carpet until security was really kicking them out.” Gucci Mane Rains Hundreds On VMA Carpet Feathers and glitter weren’t the only things flying around the white carpet; Gucci Mane made his very own contribution by tossing out money — and lots of it. “It was during the commercial break. He was on the photography press line and all of a sudden he whipped out a spot of cash, it was quite a bit,” said producer Matt Harper, who was standing at the top of the carpet. “At first he was just sort of showing it to the cameras, and then all of a sudden he just sort of threw it and then there was chaos,” he continued. Harper couldn’t tell exactly how much money was dispersed, but he did note that most of it was hundred dollar bills. Share your favorite VMA moments with us in the comments! James Cameron Wants to Film Parts of Avatar 2 at the Bottom of the Sea

Photo: Wikipedia , Creative Commons But How Will Blue on Blue Look on Screen? James Cameron is nothing if not ambitious. Avatar was a triumph of cutting edge technologies (advanced motion capture, 3D cameras, computer generated characters and sets, digital projection, etc), but it might turn out to have been a walk in the part compared to the Avatar sequel. Cameron has apparently decided to have at least part of the action take place in Pandora’s oceans, and he has commissioned an ultra-deep-sea submarine that can rea… Read the full story on TreeHugger

‘The Last Exorcism’ Leads The Way At The Box Office

‘Takers,’ starring T.I. and Hayden Christensen, lands at #2 for the weekend. By Adam Rosenberg Ashley Bell in “The Last Exorcism” Photo: Lionsgate It was a close weekend race at the box office, but in the end the powers of evil overtook the powers of, well, less evil. The Eli Roth-produced, Daniel Stamm-directed horror mockumentary “The Last Exorcism” took the #1 position this weekend with $21.3 million in ticket sales spread out over 2,874 screens. Trailing only slightly behind in the #2 position was the heist flick “Takers,” with a take of $21 million from 2,206 screens. Even though it emerged on top, “Exorcism” is a bigger winner than it seems to be. While no budget has been reported, the single camera format, absence of big stars and minimal special effects couldn’t have driven the film’s cost very high. Even factoring in marketing — which has been largely focused online with viral campaigns like — a $20+ million box office take is a considerable win. “Takers,” by comparison, boasts a star-studded ensemble that draws from both Hollywood and the music biz. Chris Brown and T.I. star alongside Hayden Christensen, Idris Elba, Matt Dillon and Zoe Saldana in a crime drama about a high-level, high-stakes bank robbery. The film’s budget is reported to hover around $20 million. It’s a sharp dip after that for positions three through five, which are filled by movies that came out earlier in August. The action throwback “The Expendables” came in at #3 with $9.5 million, slightly more than half of what it earned last week. Still, with a total gross of roughly $82 million — more than double its reported budget — in just 17 days, the Sylvester Stallone-directed/written/starring flick is no small success. Spots four and five went to a pair of Sony releases, “Eat Pray Love” and “The Other Guys,” which brought in $7 million and $6.6 million, respectively. The surprise for the weekend was the theatrical re-release of “Avatar.” Opening on roughly 800 screens with the benefit of 3-D and an added nine minutes of footage, the movie only managed to pull in $4 million, good enough for a #12 spot on the weekend list. Bradley Cooper, Ryan Reynolds To Star In Upcoming Buddy Cop Film

Duo will reportedly play police officers who are forced to work on a case with their fathers. By Adam Rosenberg Bradley Cooper Photo: Jun Sato/ Getty Images Deadpool and the A-Team’s Faceman may soon be fighting crime together. It’s an odd pairing that will be made even stranger by the fact that each will bring his dad along. Heartthrob Ryan Reynolds and equally heartthrobby Bradley Cooper are attached to star together in an untitled action comedy, according to The Hollywood Reporter . The duo will star as a pair of San Francisco cops who are forced to work with their former-cop fathers on a case. THR reports that the comedy is “meant to have an updated ‘Lethal Weapon’ flavor that plays into edgier R-rated territory,” so expect profanity and lewd behavior to go along with the high body count. The script comes from “Up in the Air” scribe Sheldon Turner, who reportedly sold it for a seven-figure sum. The pitch was first developed by producers Neal Moritz and Andrew Panay five years ago with the title “Blowback”; back then, Dwayne Johnson was attached as one of the stars. Moritz and Panay are producing this second crack at the concept, as are J.C. Spink and Chris Bender of the production company Benderspink and Jonathon Komack Martin of Reynolds’ Dark Trick Films. No studio is set yet, but Moritz and Panay are set up at Sony. Reynolds has spent this summer shooting and promoting next summer’s “Green Lantern” adaptation. He’ll show up next month in Lionsgate’s indie thriller “Buried.” Reynolds is also supposed to be reprising his 2009 role as the joke-cracking mercenary Deadpool in a reboot of the character that Robert Rodriguez may direct. Cooper showed up earlier this summer as Faceman in “The A-Team.” He’s got a sequel to the smash 2009 comedy “The Hangover” lined up for a May release. He also recently finished shooting for Neil Burger’s sci-fi thriller “The Dark Fields” with Robert De Niro and Abbie Cornish. Scream 4 Adds Two Teen Queens

A few weeks ago while perusing the Scream 4 cast list, I mused that for a slasher movie, it was awfully devoid of a certain genre staple: nubile, stabbable babes. Maybe the production was just biding its time, as shortly after adding blonde bombshells Kristen Bell and Anna Paquin to the cast , it’s come out that 90210’s Shenae Grimes and Pretty Little Liars star Lucy Hale are joining the sequel. Practice your post-modern shrieks of terror, ladies. [ Zap2It ]

Jeremy Renner Signed For ‘Mission: Impossible IV’

Paramount announced addition of ‘Hurt Locker’ actor to star alongside Tom Cruise in next ‘M:I’ installment. By Kara Warner Jeremy Renner Photo: Kevin Winter/ WireImage From “The Hurt Locker” to Hawkeye in “The Avengers” to a role opposite superspy Ethan Hunt, Jeremy Renner’s career is on the rise, as Paramount announced today that the seasoned yet rising star will appear as an operative alongside Tom Cruise in “Mission: Impossible IV.” According to Deadline , Paramount production chief Adam Goodman feels Renner “has a Daniel Craig quality” that he wants for the role. Sources tell the site that the studio was also looking for an actor who might be able to continue on with the franchise, should Cruise choose not to return in the future (Cruise is expected to return for a fifth installment). Other actors considered for the role include Tom Hardy (“Inception”), Chris Pine (“Star Trek”), Kevin Zegers, Christopher Egan and Renner’s “Hurt Locker” co-star Anthony Mackie. Although the production has had a few bumps and uncertainties along the way, Cruise has been vocal about his commitment to bring in new talent to the franchise. “My whole thing with the series is always having a new director come on and put their stamp on ‘Mission: Impossible,’ ” he told MTV News recently. “Brian De Palma was first, then John Woo, J.J. Abrams and now Brad Bird, so it will be Brad Bird’s ‘Mission: Impossible.’ ” Regarding his thoughts on the story line — which is, of course, heavily under wraps — Cruise said simply: “It’s sick. It’s fun, really fun.” Ever since his star-making turn in last year’s award-season darling (and Best Picture winner) “The Hurt Locker,” Renner has been lining up a slate of prestigious and high-profile projects. He’ll next appear in Ben Affleck’s much buzzed about Boston drama “The Town,” followed by a stint as superhero Hawkeye in Joss Whedon’s “Avengers,” and then his role in “Mission: Impossible IV.” The production, directed by Bird, with Cruise and J.J. Abrams producing, is set to begin shooting this fall. Swizz Beatz Says ‘Pressure Was On’ For Kanye ‘Power’ Remix

‘When he made that announcement, we didn’t have what we had,’ Swizz reveals of ‘Ye’s on-air promise. By Jayson Rodriguez Swizz Beatz Photo: Johnny Nunez/WireImage Kanye West’s “Power” remix had just as much manpower on the record — ‘Ye, Jay-Z, John Legend, Swizz Beatz — as it did behind the scenes. According to Swizz Beatz, the studio sessions that ultimately led to the production of the number featured not only the aforementioned artists, but also input from Q-Tip, Mos Def and the Neptunes’ Pharrell Williams. “Just multiple combinations,” Swizz told MTV News on Monday (August 23). The MCs and producers were all working on each other’s albums as the “Power” remix was being put together. The pressure was on Kanye to deliver after the rapper announced in an interview with Angie Martinez on August 11 that a remix of “Power” featuring Jay-Z would be delivered by that Friday, August 13. “He definitely, definitely was focused,” Swizz said. ” ‘Cause when he made that announcement, we didn’t have what we had. But you know when something feels right and it’s time to let something to go. ” ‘Ye was trying to put it out the best way possible, to give it to the people,” Swizz explained of the delay that followed; the remix arrived a bit later than what Yeezy promised. “And then the day before, the last day, before the remix dropped, it just felt like the song needed to change up. I heard it changing up on something different, something that was already on the beat. And I was trying to explain it, but I didn’t want to go in too much because [Kanye] was writing his verse. But it sparked an idea.” Once work on the track was complete, though, there was little if any lag time from the studio to the airwaves. Swizz said that after they finished the three-part remix — one part Jay and ‘Ye ; one part a solo ‘Ye over slower music; and the third, Swizz’s contribution featuring Snap’s “I’ve Got the Power” — Funkmaster Flex had premiered the track on NY radio station Hot 97, before Swizz had even made it home from the studio. Who would you have wanted to hear jump on a remix of “Power”? Tell us in the comments! Related Artists Swizz Beatz Kanye West

‘Piranha 3D’ Cheat Sheet: Everything You Need To Know

Dive into the campy horror flick with these fun facts! By Eric Ditzian Jerry O’Connell in “Piranha 3D” Photo: Gene Page / Dimension In a year when 3-D has seemed to take over the multiplex — you almost can’t walk past the candy counter without dodging flying spacemen, fire-breathing dragons or Johnny Depp in a wacky top hat — “Piranha 3D” might win the award for most outrageous flick of them all. It might simply be the bloodiest and raunchiest film ever to be presented in three dimensions. It was actually a running debate among the cast, when we visited the Lake Havasu, Arizona, set in June 2009, whether the movie showcased more blood or more boobs . No definitive answer was ever reached. Directed by horror maven Alexandre Aja (“The Hills Have Eyes”), the movie is the most high-tech installment of the “Piranha” horror/comedy franchise, a series spearheaded in 1978 by producer and schlock guru Roger Corman and then helmed by James Cameron in 1981. This time, the movie takes place during spring break, when thousands of hormone-addled college students descend on a sun-drenched resort spot just as an earthquake unleashes a swarm of prehistoric piranhas with a taste for blood. And boobs. Unlike those unfortunate spring breakers, MTV News is not unprepared for these nasty fishies. We’ve been tracking the production for years and now present a blood-soaked (though still family-friendly version of our big-screen cheat sheets: everything you need to know about “Piranha 3D.” Before Disaster Strikes The script had been floating around Hollywood for years — Aja first read it five years ago — and made its way into the hands of several potential directors, including Chuck Russell (“The Scorpion King”), before Aja signed on. “It’s going to be unique because it’s going to be completely in 3-D,” Aja told MTV News at Comic-Con in 2008. “I think people don’t realize the effect of all the elements coming out from the screen at you. It’s very traumatic.” The film was supposed to go into production that same year but was eventually delayed because of weather and location concerns, as well as the general difficulties of shooting a 3-D film set on the waterfront. “There’s so many problems that we’re going to have to solve,” Aja told us early in 2009. “After doing a movie with mirrors where it was kind of like a nightmare to avoid all the reflections, making a movie in 3-D underwater and on the water is going to be the biggest challenge.” But the production delays did not damper the filmmakers’ enthusiasm about the project. “We realized that, with the advent of 3-D, that we thought we could make the ultimate ‘Jaws’ for this generation ,” producer Mark Canton (“300”) told us in early May ’09. “It’s a multi-invasion. You have the invasion of youth expecting to have that wild spring break, and then you have the invasion of this prehistoric, rather unpleasant species.” By that point, the cast was in place: Elisabeth Shue as a local sheriff, Jerry O’Connell as an adult-entertainment producer, Jessica Szohr as a college student, Christopher Lloyd as a scientist and Richard Dreyfuss, returning to the water decades after his starring turn in “Jaws.” Production kicked off days after our chat with Canton. Boobies and Blood MTV News swooped into Lake Havasu in June, chatting with the cast and trying to wrap our heads around the madness. “The movie is going to be insane, because as much blood as it has, it has the equal amount of boobies,” co-star Paul Scheer laughed. “It’s boobies and blood. And we supply the boobies!” “This movie is probably going to win the record of most dead people — and most blood and most nakedness and most everything,” co-star Kelly Brook added. The shoot wrapped up at the end of the summer, and it wasn’t without its perils. “I get claustrophobic, so when we were in a boat, I was kind of halfway under water at one point and it was like a really small little cage,” Szohr told us . “I was freaking out, actually. I was like, ‘I can’t breathe! I can’t get out of here!’ ” Before the summer-movie season kicked off in earnest, Aja gave MTV News a call to assure us that as bloody and breast-filled as we thought his movie was going to be, we had no idea what he had planned. “There’s going to be 3-D double-D boobs!” he laughed. “I want to know exactly how many different girls’ boobs are in the movie. I think it’s a lot. I think blood-wise, I have to get the final number, but we are beyond anything you can even imagine.” Don’t Go in the Water We got a few gruesome clues about Aja’s crazy plans when the first trailer dropped in May, delivering CG fish and lots of unclothed flesh, much of which the fish promptly chew to shreds. A couple of months later, a few more clips popped up online, once again showcasing a ton of flesh and blood, a lovely boat ride that turns into a bikini-filled horror show, Shue going for an unexpected midnight swim and Szohr getting freaked out that “there’s something in the water!” Indeed there is, Jessica. Indeed there is. “It’s a fun horror movie,” Scheer told us recently. “The same way when you saw ‘Jaws,’ and you were like, ‘Oh, this is fun.’ Lately a lot of horror is like, ‘I’m going to cut your toe off with this razor blade.’ This is going back to the date, fun horror movie.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Piranha 3D.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .
